Fall 2016

Kewatiya School and Hostel Inundated by Flood

In an unprecedented disaster during the last week of July, flood waters devastated the NIEA School and Hostel campus at Kewatiya, Katihar district, Bihar.

Children and staff were forced into an emergency evacuation when incessant rains from Nepal brought floods to Kewatiya, causing them to flee to the NIEA Mission shelter, 30 miles away. Much of the hostel building in Katihar was damaged, including classrooms, kitchen, office, and store rooms. Some estimates put the cost of repairs at up to Rs. 250,000 ($4,000 USD) at the moment, but the cost could easily double.

The extreme rainfall impacted Purnea, Kishangaj, Aria, Katihar, Madhepura, Supaul, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur, displacing over 28,823 people, and killing at least nine. Crops in 50,000 hectares (124,000 acres) of land, 73 non-reinforced concrete cement houses and 531 hamlets have been damaged. The flood has hit 273 panchayats(villages), including 132 fully and 141 partially.

Please pray that NIEA will serve with joy and hope to bring health, healing and blessing to the needy in this time of distress and need.

If you would like to donate to the restoration of the flood-damaged buildings, please write it in the memo section of your check or go to the donate link at www.nieamission.org.

Precious Children! Empowered to live for Him! It is said that at the core of the 10-40 window is India. In the core of that core, there is Northern India. And at the core of Northern India, in the very heart of the 10-40 window, there is Bihar, the "Heartland of Backwardness.” Here, less than 1% of the 100,000,000 residents know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. With this in mind, the New India Evangelistic Association joined with volunteers from the Bangalore team of Beyond Barriers to organize a Vacation Bible School in three locations for children from Katihar and Purnia districts. For three days each, a total of over 1,000 children played games, received mentoring, and learned lessons from the Bible, all centered on the theme "Unstoppable" from Psalm 18:29.

Through sharing their personal testimonies, breaking up into small groups, creative skits, and even a ventriloquist, the leaders from NIEA and Beyond Borders ministry communicated to the children that God loved them dearly and that they could have a personal relationship with Him through His son Jesus. They taught their students that they were unstoppable with God on their side. For many, this encouragement was invaluable.

"My family members and other relatives started talking against me and my faith but I have learned the power of forgiveness through the VBS program. The experiences Uncle George shared in the program really motivated and encouraged me. I realized that there is God who has a better plan for me and my future and it will come to pass even though there are so many challenges in my life at present." –Laxmi Kumari, Student at Katihar VBS "Uncle George has shared his testimony that has influenced my life… [I] decided to grow and read the Bible daily. Now I am attending church regularly [and] praying regularly…" –Nisha Mahaldhar, Student at Purnia VBS By the end of the three days at each location, every child walked away with a newfound knowledge of the Gospel. Lives were changed, communities were blessed, and many souls were saved by the Lord's work through the NIEA and Beyond Borders ministry.

Sponsorship of children:

We are seeking individuals, families or churches that would sponsor children who live in a home in Purnia. $35.00 per month will provide food, clothing and an education for each child. Each sponsor will be given a CHILD SPONSORSHIP FORM with their child’s name, age, birthday, family situation and aspirations. NIEA USA Board members visited the children earlier this year and they were excited about the possibility of having a sponsor. It is our hope to provide you with letters, art work, or some kind of correspondence with your sponsored child at least semi- annually. If you want more information about helping a child be pulled out of abject poverty, please email us at: [email protected] call 304-485-3539

Oscar Home Residential Facility The once remote village of Kalakkad in Tamil Nadu has been transformed into a hub of jubilant children from marginal families who now get a chance for quality life with excellent facilities. The government has given NIEA permission to run the Oscar Home as a residential home, as opposed to a Day Center as it previously operated. The newly renovated home currently houses 19 boys but has the potential to care for 25. Through the ministry of this home, NIEA is providing a clean hygienic environment, nutritional food, fresh water from two recently dug wells, regular medical care, and education from nearby private schools to these precious children. The home parents lovingly instruct the children to grow in discipline. Additional tutoring is available and every evening after school, children have fun participating in organized games. Although more facilities like this are needed throughout the state, God is using the Oscar Home as a blessing for poor children in the area.

Global Medical Mission Alliance Conference

Earlier this summer Dr. Alex Philip, along with three NIEA-USA board members attended the GMMA 7 Conference in Santa Ana, CA. GMMA ( Global Medical Missions Alliance) was designed to foster support for medical missions throughout the world. It was founded by Korean American physicians who had a desire to spread God's love while touching and healing lives. The theme for the conference was a call for each person in attendance to donate one week of service over the next year to missions.

Dr. Alex was given time during the first plenary session to introduce the work of New India. His moving account of the need and the mission of NIEA was well received. He also had his own featured workshop where interested people could hear more details.

Board members Bob and Judy Ball and Dr. Christine Smith Pujayana manned an exhibit booth where they spoke with individuals and showcased various aspects of the medical work and new hospital in Bihar.

Justice for the Voiceless

Justice Ventures International (JVI) has been partners with NIEA for the past half a decade serving the needs of children and those in bonded labor, especially in Bihar, N. India. Through a network of legal experts and social activists, over 300 men and women from multi-generational bonded labor have been rescued in multiple raids conducted at brick kilns and agricultural farms in the past year. Jeff Pankratz, President of JVI, visited Bihar over six years ago to speak of the possibility of extending God’s Kingdom through the service of the voiceless and the homeless. Since then, Justice Resource Centers have been established in different parts of India, two of which are in Bihar( Gaya and Purnia).

Advocacy, Rescue & Rehabilitation

JVI has been instrumental in providing information on the Constitutional frame-work as pertaining to bonded laborers and those involved in human trafficking to hundreds of policemen, lawyers, and judges in the recent past. This service provides the needed education and awareness to the public authorities who are responsible for the rescue of the victims. NIEA is also considering assisting with the care of the children rescued from these situations so that they may be rehabilitated with a regular educational program for their progress and development. As such, JVI follows up with all victims for a minimum of two years. This is likely to be extended for a longer duration so that rescued victims have the opportunity to advance in life knowing the true liberator’s eternal love and purpose. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. (Prov. 31:8 NLT) A small girl released from bonded labor in Gaya, Bihar.
