English Department
English I students are beginning to look at persuasive techniques in text and media. They
will be analyzing and reading different media techniques. Students will apply those
techniques into a presentation where the goal will be to persuade the audience.
English Pre-DC students are independently reading “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”
Students are responsible for leading class discussions over the novel once a week and will
create a final project. Pre-DC students will also be looking at persuasive text and media
techniques.
Juniors are studying short stories. Seniors are doing research about romantic and gothic
literature and preparing to read "Frankenstein".
History Department
The History Department is up and running into a new semester. Economics classes have
started for seniors. All seniors passed Dual Credit and regular Government. Mr. Myles
Duelm and Mr. Fred Gomez are preparing their students for the US History STAAR-EOC this
semester. The teachers and students are working very hard and cannot be prouder of
everyone for working together to ensure success.
Math Department
Mrs. Ragan's freshmen Algebra students have been studying the qualities that determine a
function. They will soon begin graphing linear equations. Mrs. Walsingham's Geometry
students have been proving triangles congruent as well as perpendicular and angle
bisectors. Mrs. Paschal's Algebra 2 students have been studying quadratic equations. Next,
they will tackle imaginary numbers and simplifying radicals.
The math department also welcomes Stephanie Ernst to her student teaching assignment.
Miss Ernst is from TLU and has begun observing several of the math classes. She will
gradually assume the teaching of classes in the math department.
Science Department
The science department continues to use hands-on activities and critical writing skills to
reinforce concepts in all classes. In Human Anatomy, students continue to study the
skeletal system and articulations. While in Biology students are making models of DNA and
will use these over the next couple weeks to understand how DNA is constructed, how it is
replicated and how the code of DNA is read into proteins.
UIL Academics
Student materials arrived and students have begun studying and practicing for the UIL
academic competitions in March. The students and teacher are excited about this year’s
UIL competition. MHS will have an opportunity to attend prep competitions in the
surrounding area.
Counseling Department
MHS is proud to announce that the counselor’s website is up and fully functional. The
scholarship page is completely online this year. A calendar and announcements are made
on the counseling page daily.
The counseling office is proud to announce the following recognitions:

Semifinalist. This is a tremendous honor for Amy as well as MHS.
Congratulations to Jacob Tague for being accepted into the Johnson Space Center Young
Scholars Program. Successful completion of the program earns him a one week all-expense
paid internship at NASA during the summer.
Congratulations to Richard Henke for being named a Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation

Communities in Schools
During the month of December, the Communities in Schools (CIS) Project Success group
continued to meet to assist students with college preparation. On December 4th several
students were taken to TLU to visit the campus. A 2014 graduate of Marion High School
also met with the students to inform them about what to expect from college life and to
relate his transition from high school to college. In addition, students met with an
admissions counselor to learn about the admissions requirements and the courses of study
available. Students also enjoyed lunch in the dining hall on campus. The following day on
December 5th, all high school students were given the opportunity to visit with an
admissions counselor from the University of North Texas. On December 9th, CIS and the
counselor's office collaborated to offer a Financial Aid Night to Junior and Senior students
and their parents. There was a large audience who received information about completing
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. During of the month of December, many
students also received supportive guidance, school supplies, snacks, and academic support
from the CIS Site Coordinator. To finish out the month before the Christmas holidays, CIS
coordinated with Marion Project Care to ensure that several of our students who are in
need received Christmas gifts. December was a great month for CIS and MHS students.

fundraiser. Thirty items were donated by Marion students with a total value of $1600.
Bar-Y was very appreciative from the support received from Marion High School. Art
students will begin creating items for the Marion Education Foundation Dinner. We look
for some amazing stuff made by the kids!

The students have begun their Concentration statements and will begin working on their
projects for this section of their portfolio.
Athletics
The Varsity girls basketball team is 15-9 heading into our first district game. Marion had a
great experience (although not exactly as planned) at the Caprock Classic and would like to
thank the school board for approving the trip!
The JV is 7-0 at this time.
Powerlifting is off to a great start. The kids are working hard in the mornings getting ready
for the meets. The first meet was canceled due to weather, but the team is looking forward
to their next meet in Smithville on January 24th.
As of January 8th the Boys basketball is 12-4. Two games remain before district starts. The
boys basketball team is looking to make a run into the playoffs this year!
The boys and girls Golf will get going this spring as soon as the weather starts to warm up.
Several freshmen have joined the team. It looks to be a very successful golf season.
Softball will begin to practice on Friday, January 23rd, while Baseball begins the following
Friday, January 30th.
Band
The Directors of the Marion ISD band program are very proud to announce the selection of
Rylan Schwab to the 2015 ATSSB All-State Band. More than 9,000 high school band
students from across Texas auditioned in twenty different regions for a place in their
respective all-region bands. The top chairs in each region advanced to one of the five area
auditions held this past weekend across the state and only 290 of these 1980 students were
selected for all-state honors.
The ATSSB All-State Bands will meet in rehearsals in San Antonio, Texas, February 11-14
and will present a concert beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015, in the
Lila Cockrell Theatre of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San
Antonio.
Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands at the University of Michigan, will be the clinician-
conductor of the All-State Symphonic Band and Dr. Eric Hammer, Director of Bands and
Professor of Music Education at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in
Stockton, California, will be the clinician-conductor of the All-State Concert Band.
The Concert Band will premiere a piece written by Randall Standridge commissioned by
ATSSB. The All-State Jazz Ensemble will present their concert at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Robert
Washut, Professor of Music at the University of Northern Iowa, will be the clinician-
conductor of the All-State Jazz Ensemble.
Marion High School had 4 students audition. The results were:
Rylan Schwab - 1st place - selected for State
Banner Bradshaw - 6th place
Ashley Laubach - 10th place
Kaitlyn Bradshaw - 7th place
These students were excellent representatives of our school and community. Great job to
the students and band directors, Mr. Burhts and Mr. Goodman! Marion is very proud of
your accomplishments.
Bowling Club
The Marion High School Bowling team continues to move up in the standings as they enter
the seventh week of their bowling league. The varsity team is currently in fourth place.
The junior varsity team is in second place.
The Marion High School Bowling Club bowls on Thursdays at the Fiesta Bowling Lanes in
New Braunfels beginning around 4:45. Everyone is invited to come out and watch the
students compete.
Cheer
The cheerleaders hosted a clinic for pre-kinder to 6th grade students on January 5th & 6th,
2015. The camp was a huge success!! The little cheerleaders learned alot and the big
cheerleaders were wonderful teachers and leaders to the kids from our community. The
clinic participants performed at the varsity basketball game on Tuesday night to showcase
what they learned. The performance was hit. It was an overall success and everyone had a
great time.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
FCA has been meeting weekly to discuss topics on their faith. The group is planning a field
trip for fun and fellowship to Main Event in San Antonio.
Photography Club
The Photography Club traveled to the San Antonio River Walk for a night workshop.
Thirty-eight students attended. The students of course were amazing! On December 20,
2014 a group traveled to Austin and visited Graffitti Park. While it was not school
sponsored, our kids still took time out of their break to learn, and explore. The Marion
High School Photography Club is grateful for such great support from parents and
community.
The Photography Class submitted over 257 entries to the San Antonio Rodeo Photography
Contest. The final results will be posted at the end of January. Students are busy working
on Houston entries.
Science Club
The Science Club members are preparing for District UIL Science competition. Plans have
begun for a Spring Field trip. Most students would like to visit NASA as space travel is
always an exciting prospect.
Spanish Club
The Spanish Club is looking forward to the spring. The group will be having an
organizational meeting in February to plan and coordinate their spring field trip. In the
past the Spanish Club has attended several cultural events including Fiesta events in San
Antonio, Flamenco dancing and a Double - Decker tour bus of San Antonio and the
Missions.
Student Council (StuCo)
MHS Student Council continues their focus on service-motivated projects. On December, 5
members of the council visited the Marion City Council to deliver handmade treats and a
signed poster from the MHS Student Body thanking them for their service. During our visit,
several ideas were generated that the council could use to drive future projects with the
Marion Police Department.
Also in December, several StuCo members visited a nursing home in Schertz to sing carols
to the residents at the facility. It was a great day to end the fall semester and to enlighten
our students about how small acts of kindness can have such meaningful experience to
those on the receiving and giving end.
The club has started its weekly meetings again and look forward to providing more
opportunities to give back to our community.
