New Mother s Resource Guide

TRANSCRIPT

  • Welcome to the 2011 New Mothers Resource Guide

    WHO WE ARE

The original New Mothers Resource Guide was created as a *volunteer project in 2008 by a group

of greater Seacoast mothers. Today the New Mothers Resource Guide is a thriving resource for new

mothers and parents-to-be. It is also a valuable resource for new fathers, grandparents, 'seasoned'

parents and any one who has the remarkable responsibility of caring for a child.

The purpose of the New Mothers Resource Guide is to promote the health and emotional

wellbeing of pregnant women, new mothers, and families living in the greater Seacoast area.

    THANK YOU!

The NMRG would like to thank all of the local businesses and organizations involved in the 2011 New

Mothers Resource Guide; without you we would not be able to provide greater Seacoast mothers

and families with the variety of valuable resources available to them.

We would also like to thank the families who make use of the NMRG. By utilizing the various local

businesses in the NMRG, youre sustaining the local businesses in your community and we thank you

for doing so! Your support enables those businesses to support you in your journey through

    motherhood and beyond.

    ONLINE & SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

The NMRG has integrated our print, online and social media marketing into sensible advertising

packages for one-stop marketing made easy and affordably. We are a local, family-owned, small

business working to promote other local businesses and organizations.

    VALUE

Compared to other greater Seacoast advertising options NMRG ad costs are competitive and our

direct marketing approach is particularly effective, allowing small businesses to advertise

throughout the greater Seacoast effectively and affordably! We are happy to structure a payment

schedule to meet your budgeting needs.

    DISTRIBUTION

The NMRG is printed annually and distributed throughout the greater Seacoast (FREE) at select local

hospitals birth & health centers, local businesses/non-profits, town libraries, and Drs offices from

York, ME to Newburyport, MA. Additionally the entire NMRG is online. The NMRG was created for

and tailored to the needs of the families interested in your service and being distributed to them

through our effective networking efforts and direct marketing approach.

*The NMRG was originated in 2007 by Mary Beth Bloser, who led a team of mothers/volunteers to create the guide. The

original authors included Mary Beth Bloser, Andrea Rutherford, Angie Lombard, Christa Bellmare, and Carey Thomas. Angie

Lombard agreed to assume sole responsibility for the NMRG so it could be updated annually; she turned the NMRG into a LLC in January 2009.

Motherhood brings as much joy as ever, but it still brings boredom, exhaustion, and sorrow too. Nothing else will ever make you as

happy or as sad, as proud or as tired, for nothing is quite as hard as helping a person develop his own individuality especially while you struggle to keep your own. - Marguerite Kelly and Elia Parsons -

Disclaimer: The New Mothers Resource Guide is meant to be a starting point for women in their journey through late

pregnancy and beyond. As you utilize the resources in within the NMRG, please know the NMRG does not endorse specific

providers or businesses. It is incumbent upon all of us to ask questions of, research, and learn about the people we let into our pregnancy, birth and postpartum experiences.

Please note: We do not have every greater Seacoast resource available in the NMRG, but we are striving to get there! As

you might suspect, there are other resources available as well. We hope the resources available in the NMRG help make

your journey into motherhood a valuable learning experience.

  • Art, Music and Educational Childrens Programs

Pregnancy and postpartum are times of learning, adjustment, integration, and transformation. Parenting is an experience for which we receive little training and preparation yet it can be the most challenging, rewarding and intense experience of our

lives. It truly takes a village of support for a family to thrive in this transition. Below are area activities to do with your baby to both learn something new, get involved in the community, meet other parents, or to simply venture out for fresh air.

All artwork created in the studio is encouraged to be

developed using the artists own personal and unique style. Emphasis is placed on the process of creating rather than the

product itself. At times, reference to past artists may be used to inspire a particular style. It is also important for young artists

to recognize the differences in styles among artists; VanGogh

vs. Picasso vs. Jackson Pollock. Through this process, they witness that everyones art is truly unique.

  • Breastfeeding Support

The ancient and natural act of breastfeeding is not always simply begun. With the expert knowledge and resources of a lactation consultant, any bumps in the road can

be smoothed so the experience is comfortable and beneficial for both mother and baby. In addition to the invaluable support of peers and family, it is important to make

connections during pregnancy with La Leche League and mothers groups so the

support is there when you need it after your baby arrives.

We believe birthing is a natural process and are dedicated to

providing a safe, comfortable, family-centered approach to

every birth. We recognize each and every child as a unique individual and we believe that the care of our patients and

their families is a partnership. We believe a spirit of kindness

and a helping hand combined with expert knowledge and skill make for a better experience. We respect and support

    individual choices.

Free-Standing Birth Centers: A Free-Standing Birth Center is a facility where women experiencing a healthy, low risk pregnancy can find individualized

care in a home-like setting. Women choosing to birth at a birthing center see midwives for their prenatal care and have access to the same tests, technology and care as a woman birthing in a hospital. Many birth centers are able to accept

insurance and also offer payment plans. (Resources: birthcenter.org, waterbirth.org.) Coastal Family Birth Retreat | 13 Frying Pan Lane Stratham, NH (P) 603.580.2327 (W) www.coastalfamilybirthretreat.com

    Mental Health Support:

Women of every culture, age, income level and race can develop perinatal mood and

anxiety disorders. Symptoms can appear any time during pregnancy and the first 12 months after childbirth. There are effective and well-researched treatment options to

help you recover. Although the term postpartum depression is most often used, there are actually several forms of illness that women may experience.

While many women experience some mild mood changes during or after the birth of a child, 15 to 20% of women experience more significant symptoms of depression or

anxiety. Please know that with informed care you can prevent a worsening of these

symptoms and can fully recover. There is no reason to continue to suffer.
