A PROJECT FOR CARDIAC SURGERY A PROJECT FOR CARDIAC SURGERY
FOR LESS AFFLUENT CHILDREN FOR LESS AFFLUENT CHILDREN
INDIA INDIA
Purpose
“Needy little Hearts” from a private organisation K. J.Research Foundation offers a solution of free cardiacsurgery to Less Affluent Children. The problem of Cardiacdiseases in Less Affluent children in India is formidable.
These less affluent children do not have access toexpensive cardiac surgery. Government hospitals that
offer free cardiac surgeries for them are overcrowded.Hence support to these hospitals to tackle this seriousproblem is essential. Children who are waiting for surgerymay either die or become inoperable.
I hope this proposal is accepted for funds within aweek for there are 188 children waiting for surgery.Operating early on these children will increase theirlongevity and improve the quality of their life.
Current problems in the present environment At present there are 2000 children in the government
hospitals in state of Tamil Nadu waiting for surgery. Sincethis problem has to be tackled urgently, the Governmentof Tamil Nadu has launched a new scheme of Public-Private Partnership known as “Chief Minister’s NewScheme” in which less affluent children are screened invarious districts of rural areas for heart diseases and are
sent to various accredited private hospitals for theconduct of surgery.

Needy Little Hearts of K J Hospital Research andPostgraduate Centre is one such accredited Hospital.“Needy Little Hearts” which began before this CM’s New
Scheme came into being, performed free CardiacSurgeries by contribution from philanthropists, Corporate, and International Agencies. Now, Government of TamilNadu is contributing one component of the expenses. Therest is made up from contributions from other sources.
The next problem is that the funds should coverprogramme, fund raising, administrative expenses andunforeseen expenses.
Although we are performing with the availableequipment, we need some equipment completelydedicated to the project especially for neonates, infantsand children.
There are 190 children waiting for surgery. Thenumber is increasing as the awareness is increasing. Thegreatest bottleneck is finance. Although there have been
86 donors who have contributed so far, the greatestproblem now is sustainability of the project.
A Solution to the problem
Collection of funds for surgery from philanthropists, corporate, international agencies and Government is thesolution to this problem as one component alone cannotbear the entire cost. Needy Little Hearts has already
performed 69 surgeries by contribution from the abovecomponents
The following is the method of donor contribution forthe surgeries done so far.
Funds for each surgery:
There have been 18 philanthropists who have
contributed for the entire cost which is Rs.1, 00,000/-($2500).per surgery.

There have been those who have contributed fordifferent components. e.g
Government of Tamil Nadu Rs.30, 000/- for simpleOpen heart surgeries and Rs.70, 000/- for Complex open
Heart SurgeriesSome Foundations Such as Sun Foundation and
philanthropists such as Actor Shri Amitabh Bachchan andMr Ashok have contributed the rest of the amount asRs.12, 00,000/-,Rs.11, 00,000/- and Rs.5, 00,000/- respectively.
Corpus Fund
1) Around 43 philanthropists have given smalleramounts which has been used for extra disposables, unforeseen expenses, programme, fund raising andadministrative expenses
2) Around 25 philanthropists have given a larger amountthat has been used to make up for the rest of the
components. In short 3-6 donors have contributed forone surgery in some of the children.
3) Two donors, Mrs. Geetha Ramachandran, & ShriAmitabh Bachchan have gifted one Heater-Cooler(Cincinnati Subzero) and Blood Gas Analyser(Radiometer).
4) Dr. V. Srinivasan, (Cardio Thoracic Surgeon) has giftedsurgical instruments.
Now that it has been proved that it is possible to getcontributions from various quarters, the next aspect issustainability. This is ensured by the fact that K J ResearchFoundation has 35(1)&(ii) tax exemption which is 125% forcorporate and 100% for individuals.
The cost for performing 200 cardiac surgeries per year isRs.2, 30, 00,000/- ($575,000). This includes surgery, rehabilitation and research for prevention of heart
diseases in children.OR
