Mass PreparationAugust 2, 2020, The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3The Lord will renew his covenant with the descendants of David.
Psalm 145:8-9,15-18The Lord provides for his people.
Second Reading: Romans 8:35,37-39Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21Jesus feeds the crowd with five loaves and two fish.
The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. (Matthew 13:45)
What are you looking for in life? Everybody is searching for something. Children long for a special toy or game.
Teenagers look for a boyfriend or girlfriend or success at school. Working people might be seeking out the next big
career opportunity. People of any age could be wanting financial security or peace of mind.
Today’s Gospel introduces us to someone who is also a seeker: a merchant on a quest for fine pearls. Like many
of us, this merchant is searching for something specific. And in the midst of his search, he finds something far
more wonderful than what he expected: one single pearl of surpassing value, a “pearl of great price” (Matthew
13:46). Seeing it, he gives up the search for those “fine pearls.” He commits himself fully to obtaining that one
beautiful pearl—so much so that he sells everything else so that he can buy it.
Surely the merchant wasn’t able to sell everything all at once. There were probably times when he doubted
himself. But he kept at it, day after day, item after item, until he finally had it—the pearl of his dreams. At last he
was content!
Jesus says this merchant shows us what the kingdom of heaven is like. It is made up of people like us,
searching for happiness. In some ways, the things we seek can make us happy. But finding Jesus and being part of
his kingdom far surpasses the happiness that anything else can give. In him we find the answer to our deepest
longings for love and reconciliation. For security and fulfillment. For purpose and meaning.
Make no mistake: things we long for can often be good things. But remember the merchant. There was nothing
wrong with the pearls he was trading in. Yet he sold all of them for that one pearl of great price.
“Lord, help me to see you as a priceless pearl worth everything in my life.”
A p r i c e l e s s p e a r l !
No
Jesus, you said that you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help us to know the way to you and to be
the way for others. Amen.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Friday August 7, 2020
9:30 am to 6:00 pm in the St. Ferdinand Chapel
You are invited Friday, August 7th, to come and receive the graces promised from the source of ultimate love,
Jesus Christ. Take time out of your day to spend time in quiet prayer with our Lord at HIS House – He’s waiting
for you.
Volunteers are needed to make sure the church is never empty while the Blessed Sacrament is
exposed. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Chapel or you may call the office at 830-833-5227.
We will be following the social distancing guidelines as we do at Sunday Mass.
Taking time to be with Jesus in the Eucharist is a recipe for finding the peace your soul needs.
Adoration is one of the most beautiful ways to spend time in prayer with Our Lord. Often, the faithful spend
an hour in Adoration. Christ in Gethsemane asked, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?”
For beginners at Adoration, these tips might be helpful:
First, remember that the Lord is spending this hour with you. Talk to Him as you would any friend.
Second, sitting before the Eucharist is being granted an audience with the King of Heaven. Sit at the feet of
Jesus, as the Gospel of Luke, when Jesus tells Martha to choose the better portion, and to help attune our ears
to God’s words and our eyes to God’s gaze so we can do what we pray in the Our Father: “thy will be done on
earth as it is in Heaven.”
Third, we are called — whether married, consecrated religious, or single — to be like Christ. Christ allows
Himself to be broken, poured out to the last drop. As fallen creatures, we always tend to hold some of ourselves
back in reserve. Sitting before the Eucharist will help us to understand that love is always service, and love is
always a gifting of the whole self.
Fourth, you may want to pray the Scriptures. Read them, steep in them, reflect on them. Ask the Holy Spirit
to help you see, read, hear and understand. Read them again. Reading the scripture three times through is an
equally good means of forcing yourself not to skim, but rather to enter into the words being spoken.
Fifth, you may want to pray the Rosary. No one knows her son better than the Blessed Mother, and she can
teach you how to gaze at her Son on the Cross, how to sit at the foot of Her son at the Mount, and how to kneel
next to Him in adoration. Pray with Her, and she will help you to “do whatever He tells you.”
Finally, don’t feel like you have time to spend an hour? The time spent is not as important as entering deeper
and deeper into the mystery of being in Christ’s presence.
Come. Let us adore Him.
