School Year Book Photos:
September 16-18
This year, individual and class yearbook
school photos will be taken indoors in the
MPR. The school photo schedule is at-
tached to this newsletter. Please check it
carefully to know what day(s) your student(s) will have their photo taken. If you have a
question about your child’s photo, please contact the office [email protected]. On your
child’s picture day, please remember the following:
Nursery: Smart outfit appropriate for a yearbook photo.
EC and ES students: BLUE polo shirts; no white shirts please!
All Students:
Wear appropriate shoes & socks with your sharpest uniform.
Jewelry is discouraged (unobtrusive jewelry/watches tolerated)
Neat & tidy hair (accessories, if any, should be modest).
Students should look their best!
Students who arrive for photos in unacceptable uniforms will be sent to the office.
The process for ordering and choosing yearbook photos will be similar to that experienced
last year: when proofs are ready, parents will be sent a link to a website where they can
review the individual and class photos. Parents will be asked to select their child’s year-
book photo and may order copies if they wish. Information will be provided soon for stu-
dents who miss their photo opportunity.
CIS sibling photo sessions will be available September 23 and 24 for a price of CI$25. If
you are interested, please contact Ms. Ana at [email protected] to book and pay
for your session.

CALLING ALL ELEMENTARY STUDENT
LEADERSHIP WANNA BES
The week of September 16, Ms. Rita and
Ms. Nadine will spend time meeting with
students in grades 3-5 and encouraging
them to apply to be an Elementary Student
Leader. This group of student leaders will
meet every Tuesday during their recess
time and help plan activities for elemen-
tary students along with participating in
service projects throughout the school
year. In the past we’ve had pool parties,
movie afternoons, made Valentines for
Hospice and coordinated the CIS Giving
Tree. We look forward to another suc-
cessful year! Applications will be dis-
persed by the classroom teacher and there
is one attached to this newsletter. All
forms are due by Friday, September 20
prior to the half day dismissal.
Innisbrook catalogs have been given to every student at CIS. This is a fantastic way to purchase some wrapping paper, bows, gift bags and great baking mixes for the holidays. The flyer stapled to the front of the catalog explains how to place orders, cost in-volved and fundraising details. Your local contacts are Rita Imparato ([email protected]) or Tricia Macdonald. Here’s the link for easy access to ordering: http://ez1.orderinnisbrook.com/external/schoollink.php?id=112011
Cayman International School ‘s Innisbrook school number is: 112011
Early Childhood Parents Night
Thank you to parents of Early Childhood students who attended the EC Parent Night. The evening was a wonderful opportunity for parents to learn more about their children’s classroom routines, activities, and learning experiences. In some classrooms, teachers shared books, and invited parents to participate in activities similar to those their children enjoy every day. Specialist teachers were also on hand to meet with parents about the programs they offer to EC children. In addition, the evening was a chance for teachers and parents to share how best to work together to support their children’s learning. It was a wonderful start to the new school year!
Parent Reminder
Please remember that students may not be dropped off at
school prior to 7:45am. Safety and security are paramount, so
please ensure that your child(ren) are dropped off and picked
up in the designated supervised areas at the correct times.

INTERNATIONAL PEACE
DAY
Every year CIS partici-pates in International
Peace Day. This year CIS will recognize Inter-
national Peace on September 20. Our IB learner profile for this month of being open-minded fits with the philosophy that open-
minded people help create a better and more peaceful world. CIS will help cele-
brate this day by reading books pertaining to peace, brainstorming with students what peace means to them and discussing the
idea of peace. Elementary student will also be designing Peace glasses
and will be participating in an Island
wide Peace
puzzle.
Homework
Homework teaches children
how to take respon-sibility for tasks and
how to work inde-pendently. Homework
helps children learn how to plan and organize tasks, manage
time, make choices, and problem solve, all skills that contribute to
effective functioning in the adult world of work and families.
It is generally agreed that the younger the child, the less time the child should be expected
to devote to homework. A general rule of thumb is that children do 10 minutes of homework for each
grade level. While it may be tempting to save the most challenging or least desirable part of homework for last
because you may not know how long it is going to take, it is advantageous to get this piece done first when energy and brain power are strong.
It is important to establish clear routines around homework, including when and where homework gets done and setting up daily schedules for homework. Incentives may need to be used with children who resist doing homework. Appropriate incentives could be spending positive family time with your child, scheduling in computer game time, or arranging some other activity your child enjoys. You may want to also consid-er building in breaks. The student should be included in decid-ing the homework schedule and routine to reduce power struggles between parents and children.

ELEMENTARY ASSEMBLY
The first assembly of the new school year was a great success! Tradition led the way with the sing-ing of the National An-them and the CIS School Song. A warm welcome was given to our newest CIS stu-dents. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile for the month, Open-Mindedness, was demonstrated through a dramatization of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham by our Ele-mentary Support Staff. Ms. Ashley recognized our Summer Reading Challenge Top Readers, encouraged students to do-nate books to the library for their birthdays, and invited eve-ryone to the first Saturday Open Library (tomorrow). Ms. Nimmi followed by recognizing students who won awards at the National Children’s Festival of the Arts in May. We closed with a lively and fun performance of the Sid Shuffle, led by Mr. Matt’s class and assisted by his former students from last year. A special treat was when everyone was invited to stand up and join in with the dance! What a joyful way to end the assembly! Thank you to all the teachers and students who helped with the assembly, to the parents who attended, and to our attentive and respectful audience.

IB TEAM BUILDING KICK OFF
On Friday Septem-ber 6th, IB staff and students par-
ticipated in our annual IB Team Building event. Students en-gaged in games and exercises designed to help reinforce their understanding of the Interna-tional Baccalaureate Pro-gramme and learner profile, and to further develop a sense of team spirit among our 2013-14 cohort. We were also very pleased to welcome back Sheline C., CIS Valedictorian 2013, to talk about her experiences when completing the full IB Diploma and to offer some words of wisdom to the current students. Both students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event, and we extend our
thanks to Ms Dhara for organizing the whole event. Good luck to all of our IB students as they em-bark on another year of hard work and aca-demic success!
SECONDARY PARENT NIGHT
There was a great turn-out for the Second-
ary Parent Night on Wednesday, September
11. The connection between home and
school is very important to the success of
students. Thank you parents for attending
Parent Night and supporting your students
and CIS. Hopefully the evening provided a
brief glimpse into the daily life of your child.
IB Learner Profile Corner — Open-Mindedness in 9th and 10th Grade Math Class
Students are learning to be open-minded when approaching unfamiliar prob-
lems, fighting against the closed-minded assumption that
because there is something unfamiliar, they cannot find the
answer. Instead, they are focusing on what they do know
and exploring where it takes them, 10th graders with their
knowledge of basic postulates and theorems and 9th graders
with algebraic generalization.

Organization is the key!
We’ve already been back to school for three weeks, and that means that quizzes,
papers, and progress reports will be coming up quickly! The key to a bright and success-
ful school year is organization. Now is the perfect time for you to make sure you are start-
ing off on the right foot by getting yourself organized. Here are a few tips to help you manage
your time, set goals, avoid confusion, and stay on an organized path to success.
GOALS: It is important to set realistic goals at the beginning of the school year, and then break those
large goals into mini goals. Write your goals down in a highly visible place where you can see them often
and stay motivated to keep working towards achieving all that you hope for.
PLAN AHEAD: Wake up early enough for school to eat breakfast and arrive at CIS well ahead of time. Pack your
homework, gym clothes, instrument, computer, and lunch the night before so it’s all ready to go for school. Running
around in a panic is no way to start the day!
AVOID CLUTTER: At the beginning of the school year your backpack and locker are clutter-free, spend the time you need to
keep it that way! Create separate folders for each class, and develop a filing system for homework, tests, handouts for parents,
etc. As papers become outdated, throw them away!
FIND AN EFFECTIVE STUDY AREA: Designate a quiet, well-lit area for studying. Don’t study in front of the television or in an environ-
ment that you are likely to be distracted. Set rules for yourself about checking facebook, email, or playing games while studying.
GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP: Get a good night of sleep to ensure that you are alert and ready to learn the following day.
USE A STUDENT PLANNER: Use your student planner or an electronic calendar. Try to use only one calendar, so you can make sure
everything is written down in one place and you won’t miss important assignments, tests, or events. When you learn about upcoming
homework or tests, write it down immediately in your planner so you don’t forget. You might want to color code your planner to make it
easier to stay organized (for example, highlight all tests in yellow, and write all homework assignments in red).
