TRIP TO CRANBOURNE BOTANIC GARDENS

Last Thursday the Grade 1/2s went on the best excursion! Want to hear more? Keep reading! When we first got there, Sally told us about the crow that was in the playground. Sally told us that animal prints are lucky for Aboriginal people. When they see animal prints they know that there are animals near them. They would go hunting for the animals. By Savannah K. Hi! Do you want to hear about the best excursion ever? Then read right here… Last Thursday we went to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Sally took us around to the Australia Garden. Then we kept on walking to the area where we did ochre art. There were only men’s handprints which showed that only men were allowed in that area. We learnt about them believing in two Gods. One was an eagle called Bunjil. The other one was a crow. When they saw an eagle or a crow they felt protected. After the lessons with Sally we went on a walking track to a playground. The playground was so much fun! After the playground we walked up to the Trig Lookout Tower. We could see all the way to Mt Dandenong. What a fun day! By Samantha C. Last Thursday we had the best excursion ever! All the 1/2s went to the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens. I liked doing the ochre art. We used the ochre paint to get your handprint. We made the ochre paint by putting water on the ochre and rubbing another stone on it. By Stephanie W. Last week we went to the Botanic Gardens. We had a teacher called Sally. We did ochre art. I put my handprint on the wall. By Antonio C.

Our Excursion to the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens - Grade 1/2S - Some of our highlights…. I could see a wombat burrow and I learnt about aboriginals. By Brooklyn. My favourite activity for the day was the aboriginal talk and we saw a wombat burrow and wombat poo on the way to have lunch. By Liam. We went to the lookout. My favourite thing was playing on the see- saw. By Abigail. When we got up all the stairs, to the lookout we could see far, far, far, far away. By Kaiya. We walked to the lookout and I saw the city, this was my favourite part. By Hamish. My favourite activity for the day was the tea. We got to taste lemon myrtle tea it was yummy and delicious. By Amelia B. First we went to the River Walk and we had our snack. By Tanya. In the gardens we were twisting through a maze! My favourite part was seeing the wombat burrow because it looked interesting. By April. At the top of the tower I could see the city and we walked to the playground to have our lunch. By Gemma. JAPANESE CORNER

Firstly, I’d like to say thank you so much to the Crossman Family. I had a great time with them during the last three weeks. They have taken me to see many places such as, a Festival, football game, museum, zoo, watching birds and kangaroos, etc. Everything was amazing, especially when I saw wild kangaroos, I was so excited! I loved Mrs Crossman’s cooking! Her cooking is not only healthy, but also delicious. I also loved the coffee’s which Mr Crossman made. Jack always gave me some yummy snacks and Samantha always worried about me. Their Grandmother is very much like my grandmother. Zoe, who is their dog is one of my best friends. I will never forget my three weeks spent with them. TOMOKO KIKUCHI

Happy Birthday Tomoko! It is Tomoko’s Birthday today so from all of the students, parents and staff at Kalinda we wish Tomoko a very happy Birthday. Hiromi Hagihara LOTE Teacher

CROYDON ROTARY SPEECH COMPETITION On Monday, 1st August, Lucas W. (56K) and Abbey W. (56J) entered the Croydon Rotary Melba College Speech Competition. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to put themselves forward to participate in an exciting and formal evening. As public speaking is ranked highly as one of the worst adult fears, these students have faced an amazing challenge. Lucas’s speech was titled, ‘It All Happened So Quickly,’ and Abbey chose, ‘If I Could Be Principal of My School, I would…’ The evening runs over two nights, and many schools from around the area enter. Each student receives a certificate, a journal and a pen. Kalinda Primary School would like to thank Croydon Rotary and Melba College for hosting this annual event. “It was really exciting, and I’m hoping to do more things like this in the future.” Lucas W. “It was quite formal and a lot of fun. It was a terrific night. I felt very nervous, but I thought if other people can do it, then I can do it.” Abbey W. LYSE CARLSON GRADE 5/6C

This year we will be celebrating Literacy and Book Week in the week beginning Monday 8 th August. Throughout the week children will be reading several of the books nominated for the Australian Children’s Book of the Year awards. The highpoint of our celebration will be Friday 12th August. On this day children are being asked to come dressed as something from the THRASS chart. We will be holding a THRASS Parade in the stadium at 9:30am, this will be followed by two multi-aged literacy based rotations, where children will visit two different classrooms and experience two different picture story books and fun activities linked to the books. After recess the fun continues with a very special book week performance Fair Dinkum. Celebrating the Children’s Book Council’s 2016 theme ‘Australia: Story Country’, Fair Dinkum is an action packed, fun filled adventure that encourages children of all ages to consider how significant books can be, not only as a means of entertainment and escape, but as a way of informing their understanding of the world around us. The performance features a selection of the CBC’s 2016 Shortlisted Books. Erin Norman Literacy Coordinator

HEALTH ALERT This is to inform you that we have had several cases of Gastroenteritis across all levels of the school this week! If your child does contract Gastro, according to Health Department guidelines, they must not come to school until 48 hrs after symptoms have cleared. For further information, please visit the Health Department site at: www.health.vic.gov.au or contact your family doctor.

ILLNESS Winter months are always cold, wet and fraught with illness. We have had many children away already this term, as well as sick teachers. If your child is ill, please do not send them to school as this only makes the cycle of illness go round and round. Please make sure your emergency contact details are up-to-date in case we have to ring you. We do not have space to be tending to sick children at school.
