From the Principal’s desk…. Welcome to Week 4. Last Thursday the school executive held their final conference day with re-
nowned educational expert David Eddy. David has been working with our school and 2 others on
a trial program that will be expanded to all Diocesan schools next year. I must commend Mr Fo-
ley and Mrs Benton who presented a report on the project at the recent Assistant Principals con-
ference. David Eddy was full of praise for their in-depth review. The skills learnt will improve our
school’s targeted approach to planning. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of our
schools consultant, Mr John Wagner who assisted the leadership team throughout the training.
I also must congratulate our Kindergarten team of Mrs Brice and Mrs Hoper, along with our REC,
Mr Schwager, who worked together to coordinate an excellent Grandparents Day Liturgy. Unfor-
tunately, I was unable to attend due to the conference but from all reports, including my own
parents, it was excellent. Also, a sincere thankyou to the P&F for the morning tea.
Gospel and Reflection: Matthew 22:34-40 - The Great Command-
ment
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees,
they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a
question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment
in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is
like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two
commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Love is a strange word in English. We use it for so many things;
clothes, food, entertainment, holidays. When Jesus asked Peter those three times ‘Do you love
me?’ he used different words for platonic, filial or a ‘willingness to die for me’ kind of love.
The two great commandments call us to look closely at how we live here on earth: to honour our
Creator and live among our fellows with a common goal.
VISION STATEMENT
To change the world through our faith in Jesus who is our light and hope.
To love our neighbour is to treat all as a loved brother or sister; this means our familiar neighbours, the marginalised, refugees, and any stranger in our midst. Lord, grant me the kind of self-love which is healthy and good, so I, in turn, may truly love others.
This week I will be on Long Service Leave from Monday to Wednesday, followed by the Principals meeting in Bathurst on Thursday and Friday. Mr Schwager and Mrs Benton will be sharing my duties.
Our Year 5 students, Mr Foley, Mr Sayers, Miss Bolton and Mrs Emery will be heading to Sydney for their excursion on Tues-day morning. I know they will have a great time.
God bless and have a wonderful week

2017 Melbourne Cup Trifecta
Each year the Catholic Schools in Dubbo hold a Melbourne Cup Trifecta Fundraiser. The Trifecta
consists of 12,144 tickets which are sold at a cost of $1 per ticket.
This year again our school has been given the opportunity to sell the tickets.
This allows our school to raise almost $8,500 (after costs) in 3 short weeks.
In 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2016 St John’s were given this opportunity which assisted in the purchase of smart boards for many of the classrooms and a cricket pitch. Last year the funds went towards
the construction of our all weather shelter in the pickup zone.

PRIZE $2500 Tickets will be sold at a cost of $1 each.
Each ticket has 3 numbers on it. If you have the ticket with the numbers of the 3 winning Melbourne Cup horses (in the winning race order) you will win $2,500. If you have a ticket that has the 3 winning numbers,
but in a different order, you could win $25.
We are calling on the whole school to help. The P&F cannot do it alone
