ensure their child returns on time. There is no requirement by the school for students to leave the school grounds for lunch. The school does provide a canteen run by the HWMHS P & C and teachers are supervising in the playground. New notes will be available at the end of this term.

DRUMBEAT The Year 6 students from St Mary’s and Hay Public School participated in the DRUMBEAT program this week. The students were fantastic and we are looking forward to see them all again next week. I would like to acknowledge the Commonwealth Bank who recently donated $10000 to Vinnies Reconnect in Deniliquin to deliver the DRUMBEAT

program to Deniliquin and Hay’s youth. Our current Year 8 students had the opportunity to participate in the DRUMBEAT program in Term 2, 2016. They were able to explore human relationships and practice skills that enable healthy social interaction and connection. They also were able to work with the social workers from Vinnies Reconnect Deniliquin and have been able to continue that connection beyond the program. Standing for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes and Thoughts, DRUMBEAT is a program which uses music to engage youth, teach social skills, and build-self-esteem. The school has been utilising this program since 2012. At our school we continue to deliver and explore opportunities for our students.

Summer Loving The 2017 Academic year will be going off with a bang, with some summer loving...but don’t worry it’s all PG with the hit classic Grease. The movie reward is available to all students who are/were not placed on the a discipline step after 17th October. So why are we watching a musical about teenage love in the 50’s? Well besides the fact that all ages can relate (different reasons for as oldies), it is a chance to reward those students who have either consistently done the right thing all year, or shown improvement this term. You may remember such PBL rewards from excursions such as the Altina Wildlife Park or Griffith Cinema.

What’s the deal?

We are offering a special one time only Movie Deal. Students will receive a free drink (water, soft drink, or juice) and popcorn (a variety will be available to suit any dietary requirements) with their FREE movie. I’d like you to find a better deal elsewhere! Students who are eligible will get to spend period’s 5 and 6 this Friday in the Spirit of ANZAC Centre watching (and singing) the events of 1959 California unfold on the big screen.

But wait there’s more

There are also prizes up for grabs!

There will be a fancy dress competition, with prizes going to best female costume, best male costume, and best couple/group. Fancy dress not your thing, well don’t worry. There will be a lucky door prize which all movie going students will be entered into, or perhaps students might like to try out their vocals skills, as there will be a prize for best singers.

Students are welcome to wear their costumes all day.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone get into the spirit, even if it’s only spring days drifting away.

Alternative arrangements have been made for students who do not meet the eligibility requirements.

Ms J. McMullen

Lifesaving Program Year 7 2017 Yesterday, students received notes regarding our Lifesaving Program. The program will be held periods 5 & 6 each Wednesday.

The program will start on Wednesday November 15 and continue on consecutive Wednesdays until the December 14. This will require attendance at the Hay Swimming Pool between 1.30pm and 3.20pm. Your child’s swimming ability will be assessed and he/she will attempt an appropriate award from RLSSA. Students who don’t return notes or forget their swimmers will be required to remain at school to do swimming theory work.

Students will leave school at the 2nd half of lunch under the direction of staff members. Bus travellers will have time to walk back to school and students who live in town can walk directly home from the pool. If students wish to remain at the pool after 3.20pm, they must have a signed permission note from parents/guardians. Students will be permitted to wear casual clothing for life saving, but they must wear sports uniform for Periods 1-4 at school.

The intensive course will also cover basic First Aid, Learn to Swim, Resuscitation and important Life Saving Skills. Given the number of deaths in Australia due to drowning and the number of Hay children who swim in the river, we hope that this course will be something that will make children think before they act in regard to water safety and that they will develop the basic skills to help them in a possible emergency situation.

Students will need to pay $3 to cover the cost of booklets and resources. If students wish to purchase their Lifesaving Award they will need to bring in the following amount.

* Swim and Survive $5.50 * Senior Swim and Survive $5.50 * Bronze Star $11.00 Students will know what award they are attempting by early next week. To enable the students to receive the awards early in 2018, all money for awards need to be paid by Friday December 15. For more information please contact Leonie Booth at the high school.

All students have been issued permission notes. Please return notes and $3 by Friday, November 10.

Getting wild at NAIDOC state finals Last week our amazing NAIDOC debaters had the chance of a lifetime to attend the state debating finals at Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo. This was a fantastic chance to get back to nature. Students learnt valuable skills, such as not sitting on peacocks or the difference between a donkey and a horse as well as important information such as the devastating effects of the palm oil farming. After the long trip we were in for a wild night, as students got the opportunity to camp overnight inside the zoo. Luckily we survived the night and nobody went on a midnight walk into a lion’s den. The next day was back to business where Hay War Memorial High competed against students across the state. We were by far the youngest team at the competition, and we are all so very proud of the fantastic effort these four students put in throughout the entire journey. We may not have won the competition but these four students certainly showed the state that we are a force to be reckoned with. Please join me in my congratulations of Hannah Shea, Joseph Wilson, Olivia Joyce and Vanessa Kennedy.
