TRAVEL CLUB NEWS July 11, 2014 By Ed Reilly,

Chairman, Club New Horizons Phone: 310-326-4710

August: On Sunday, August 24, we are scheduled to attend

a wonderful California Philharmonic concert at the beauti-

ful and iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. From the stain-

less curves of its striking exterior to the state of the art

acoustics of the hard wood paneled main auditorium, the

3.6 acre complex embodies the unique energy and creative

spirit of the city of Los Angeles. Every year on special

Sundays the California Philharmonic takes over the Con-

cert Hall to share with Los Angeles their special music.

Sunday, August 24 is the date of our concert. With a pro-

gram entitled “Broadway and Bolero,” we will hear music

selections from “Chicago,” “Bolero,” “Evita,” “Cats” and

“Espania.” There is a something there for everybody.

We’ll be leaving at 10:15 AM and returning at 5:45 PM.

The cost for this great afternoon of music is $96.00 assum-

ing we can interest at least 27 patrons. Lunch will be on

your own at L.A. Live. This signup sheet is on the board.

September: TBA

October: October means that it is time to celebrate Ok-

toberfest! And this year, as we did last year, we are cele-

brating this autumn ritual in Big Bear. Saturday, October

18 is the date you need to put on your calendar. Oktober-

fest at Big Bear is a long standing tradition in Southern

California. This year’s 44th

annual festival features bands

direct from Germany including “The Express” who have

been performing in Big Bear for over 15 years! Traditional

festivities include a log sawing contest, stein holding con-

test, safe slam beer drinking contest the chicken dance and

performances by a variety of authentic dance groups. In

addition, there is a variety of arts and craft exhibitors and

the highest elevation Bier Garten in the U.S. The atmos-

phere is always charged with hospitality, laughter and ca-

maraderie. In addition, we can look forward to a full Ger-

man luncheon and a guided tour around Big Bear Lake with

a host in traditional costume . This will give us a chance to

learn the history of the lake and hear stories that have made

Big Bear Lake one of Southern California’s favorite desti-

nations. Break out your Dirndls and Lederhosen and help

us make this a truly fun day.

Is traveling of interest to you? If so, how about joining us?

The Travel Club meets the first Thursday of every month at

7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. We always conduct a little

business, discuss new and upcoming trips, see a travel re-

lated film and enjoy a social hour with refreshments. It is a

lot of fun. Our next meeting will take place on July 3,

2014. If you would like additional information, please call

Ed Reilly at (310) 326-4710, or Sharon Rose at (310) 539-

0811.

Men's Golf results for July 2, 2014

Comments: Nice day for a golf tournament and a

pretty good turn-out for our Wednesday men’s tour-

nament. However, we could really use some more

players for the B-flight, or even expanding to add a

C-flight. So, here’s hoping some of our old friends

who haven’t been playing lately will rejoin our

Wednesday men’s group: it get’s light early, the

weather is great and so is the companionship. Come

on out. See you all next week.

Louis Zamperini

Submitted by Paul Cohen

Date: July 4, 2014, Torrance

Today, the flags in our city fly at half mast to remem-

ber a man we called our Home Town Hero - Louis

Zamperini. He succombed to pneumonia on Wednes-

day, July 2nd, at the age of 97.5.

The rest of the world knew him as that incredible per-

son who survived 47 days adrift on a raft in the south

Pacific during WWII only to wash ashore of an enemy-

occupied island 2000 miles away from where his plane

crashed, and who withstood two years of torture at the

hands of those who knew they had someone “famous”

as a prisoner.

With his older brother, Pete's encouragement, Louis

eventually learned to channel his bad-boy energies into

running. He was selected to be one of the 334 Ameri-

can athletes to go to the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.

While at Torrance High School, he blew the competi-

tion away, setting a new interscholastic mile world

record of 4:21:20, which stood for 20 years! Louis

put Torrance on the map.

Like his legend, his name too will live on in Torrance -

Zamperini Way, Zamperini Field and Zamperini Stadi-

um.

He always had a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and a

kind word for all - he was an inspiration like no other.

For those who don’t know his story, they will get a

chance on Christmas, with the release of the movie,

Unbroken - book written by Laura Hillenbrand, movie

directed by Angelina Jolie. Both women have told

Louis’ story from their hearts - thereby keeping the

book on the New York Times best-seller list for more

than 174 weeks (14 as number one), and counting, and

a movie which is sure to stroll down the red carpet

with an Oscar nomination.
