Meet the National Guernsey Queen Hello New York Guernsey Breeders’, I am Kami Schuler from Platteville, Wisconsin, which is locat-ed in the southwest corner of the state. I am a jun-ior at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville ma-joring in Animal Science with an emphasis in Dairy Science. I currently work at the UW-Platteville Swine Center and milk cows at the home farm. Our milking herd is exclusively Guernseys. We raise our bull calves for market and sell a few for service. We also have hay, oat, and corn ground. I grew up on Donnybrook Farm and am the youngest of five siblings. I participated in 4-H for 14 years

and FFA for 4 years.

My membership in the Wisconsin Junior Guernsey Breeders’ Association allowed me the opportunity to meet other youth that had the same interest in Guernseys which then broadened into my involvement on the national level and my application for the Queen role. As we see the diminish of family farms, it is now more important than ever to get our young people involved as they are the future of the breed. A good place to start is to make Guernsey opportunities available in our 4-H and FFA programs. As state associations, we need to reach out and provide the awareness of the advantages. Getting involved and learning about the resources the state association and the American Guernsey Association have to offer pro-vides the support system needed to be successful. It also keeps you moti-vated when you can be recognized for your accomplishments.

There are so many advantages to having Guernseys and if we can plant that seed early we can only continue to improve and sustain this breed. Besides all the well-known traits of the Guernsey for example easy calv-ing, great grazers, and the efficiency in converting feed to milk, the ulti-mate outcome is the quality milk this cow produces. Not only is it com-petitive in milk pricing components, but in a health conscious world, has added health benefits. Over the last decade A2 type milk is becoming prevalent in the dairy industry and Guernseys are known to produce A2 type milk versus Holsteins producing A1. A1 is linked to more health risks such as heart disease, type 1 diabetes, and autism whereas A2 milk is not implicated. This may become a great marketing tool for the golden Guernsey milk.

I am really enjoying my role as the National Guernsey Queen. It has been a pleasure traveling and meeting fellow Guernsey Breeders and enthusi-asts, and the youth involved that will be carrying out the legacy of this breed. It has been a great adventure to see the commitment and devotion of so many towards this beautiful and gentle breed.

Thank you for being so passionate for such a wonderful breed,

Kami Schuler
