After 'messy' loss, Jets focused on bouncing back (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press September 28, 2015

http://www.pro32.ap.org/article/after-messy-loss-jets-focused-bouncing-back

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The game film pretty much confirmed what the New York Jets already thought of their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"It was messy," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said bluntly.

"It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good."

Sure wasn't, and it knocked the surprising Jets (2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Interceptions, fumbles, missed tackles and sloppiness all played a role in the 24-17 defeat. It followed an impressive victory over the Indianapolis Colts that prompted fans and media to hype the Jets as a team to watch.

"We didn't lose this game because we thought we were better than we are," center Nick Mangold said. "We lost because of execution."

Or, lack thereof.

The Jets fell behind 24-0 in the second quarter, with an 89-yard punt return for a score by Darren Sproles sparking the previously winless Eagles.

Meanwhile, New York trudged through the first half with five three-and-outs in its first six drives.

"That's a recipe for disaster," Fitzpatrick said. "It's such a slow start, trying to play from behind because of that all game."

The Jets nearly came back, though, making a game of it by keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard for the final two quarters. But New York had trouble overcoming the absences of Eric Decker (sprained knee) and running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps) as Fitzpatrick struggled for the first time in his three starts.

He finished 35 of 58 for 283 yards and two touchdowns, but three second-half interceptions — even though two weren't entirely his fault — ended any hopes of a big comeback.

"The 58 attempts or whatever it was is too many," Fitzpatrick said. "That's not our formula for success. There's a lot of things coming out of that game that we've got to be better at, and that starts with me."

The quarterback was hardly the only problem, though.

The special teams unit fanned on at least four tackles on Sproles' big return. With Ivory out, the running game came to a screeching halt with just 47 yards rushing. And then there was also Brandon Marshall's ill-advised backward pass attempt — something he called "the worst play in NFL history" — that resulted in a fumble and led to Philadelphia's final touchdown.

Marshall replayed the play in his mind all night, saying the only positive thing was that it happened right near the Jets' sideline so he didn't have far to walk off the field. He said he had successfully tried a play like that three times during his career.

"Now, I think my record for the rest of my career is going to be 3-1," Marshall said. "I'm never going to try that again."

Coach Todd Bowles made a point of remaining understated following the Jets' first two victories, and he predictably maintained that approach after his first defeat as New York's coach.

"It's just as important not to overreact for a loss as it is to a win," he said. "We didn't overreact to the two wins, we're not going to overreact to the one loss."

Next up for the Jets is a trip to London to play the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Then, New York has a bye, so the focus is on bouncing back — even if it's overseas.

"I love the 1 o'clock game and getting home and eating food from the crockpot and doing all that, but I think it's exciting, too," Fitzpatrick said. "I think guys think it's cool to go over there. It will be a unique experience for all of us and hopefully bring the team together even more."

The Jets brought in a sleep specialist to help get the players bodies' prepared for the five-hour time difference. They have to stay well-hydrated for the long flight, and need to watch their caffeine intake during the day so they can get to bed earlier than usual leading up to the trip.

The team will practice at their facility on Wednesday and Thursday, and then leave for London on Thursday night.

"Just getting our bodies acclimated and everything with the time change will be interesting," Fitzpatrick said.

NOTES: The Jets claimed S Dion Bailey off waivers from Seattle and waived S Ronald Martin, who the Jets also got off waivers from the Seahawks before the start of the regular season. Bailey was let go by the Seahawks on Saturday after S Kam Chancellor ended his holdout.

Jets' Colon sidelined for at least 1 game with sprained knee (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press September 28, 2015

http://www.pro32.ap.org/article/jets-colon-sidelined-least-1-game-sprained-knee

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets right guard Willie Colon will be sidelined at least one game with a sprained knee.

Coach Todd Bowles said Colon, injured during the Jets' 24-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, sprained the medial collateral ligament in one of his knees. An MRI on Monday confirmed the injury, which will keep him out of the team's game against the Miami Dolphins in London. MCL sprains can take several weeks to heal.

The Jets have a bye-week break after the game Sunday, and it's uncertain whether Colon will be ready to return for the team's next game on Oct. 18 against Washington.

"I truly hope so," Bowles said.

In the meantime, Brian Winters will start in Colon's place. Winters was the Jets' third-round pick out of Kent State in 2013 and started 12 games at left guard as a rookie. He also started the first six games last season before being lost for the season with a torn ACL.

Winters will be tasked with going up against Miami defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on Sunday.

"Brian's a tough guy," Bowles said. "He's played before, and he's played against good competition. Obviously with Suh being one of the best in the league, he's going to have his hands full. Our offensive line as a whole will have their hands full, so we've just got to get ready to play."

Bowles said cornerback Darrelle Revis is dealing with a sore hamstring that kept him out of the final minutes of the game Sunday. Revis said he would be "fine" after being questionable last week with a tweaked groin.

"He said it was on the same leg," Bowles said. "He might have overcompensated for it, is what he told me."

Tight end Jeff Cumberland is in the NFL's concussion protocol after being injured against the Eagles. Bowles said the Jets could add another tight end to the roster if Cumberland can't play, with promoting Wes Saxton from the practice squad a possibility.

Linebacker Quinton Coples sprained an elbow, but is expected to be able to play against the Dolphins.

Jets' Bowles gets surprise radio visit from Gladys Knight (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press September 28, 2015

http://www.pro32.ap.org/article/jets-bowles-gets-surprise-radio-visit-gladys-knight

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets coach Todd Bowles was doing his weekly radio spot when a special guest was introduced on another phone line.

Now, joining the program: Gladys Knight.

"Yeah, right," a laughing Bowles told host Michael Kay, who said he wanted to cheer up the Jets coach after a 24-17 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.

No, really. The seven-time Grammy winner nearly left Bowles — a self-proclaimed "big Gladys music fan" — speechless Monday when she called in to "The Michael Kay Show" on 98.7 ESPN Radio.

"Mr. Bowles! How are you?" Knight asked the coach.

"Gladys!" exclaimed Bowles, who has mentioned the "Empress of Soul" several times in the past few weeks during news conferences. "Oh, my gosh. How are you?"

Knight said she was trying to make it on time to watch the game Sunday at MetLife Stadium, but arrived late, when the Eagles had already jumped out to a big lead. Philadelphia led 24-0 before New York scored a touchdown right before halftime.

"It wasn't five minutes after I got there that they scored their touchdown," Knight said. "They didn't lose (anything) else after that."

Bowles sheepishly said: "That's OK. Thank you so much for even coming. I really appreciate it."

Knight learned of Bowles' appreciation for her music through her husband William McDowell, who caught wind of the stories and Twitter posts that mentioned how just about the only thing that would excite the even-keeled Jets coach is if Knight walked into the room.

"'Where Peaceful Waters Flow' gets me through every day," Bowles said, referring to the song on Gladys Knight & The Pips' 1973 album "Imagination."

"Well, I might have to do that for ya one of these days," Knight said. "When we get to the Super Bowl. How about that?"

Bowles, in his first year as Jets coach, responded: "I'll take it. You've got a deal."

The 71-year-old Knight's new dance single, "Just A Little," was recently released, and Bowles said he'd "have it tomorrow."

Knight said she is a sports fan, dating to her days with the all-male Pips, and even took part in a fantasy football league last season. She added that Bowles could "absolutely" step in for one of the Pips.

"He's going to have to dance for me," Knight said. "That's right. I know you can do that. We're going to have to get together and make this work, OK?"

Bowles laughed and said, "You got it."

NEWSDAY

Gladys Knight performs a surprise duet with Todd Bowles (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday September 29, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/gladys-knight-performs-a-surprise-duet-with-todd-bowles-1.10901225

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Even-keeled Todd Bowles had a hard time keeping his composure on Monday when he was surprised by a special guest during his weekly ESPN Radio spot on "The Michael Kay Show": Gladys Knight.

At first, the Jets' coach couldn't believe that his all-time crush was on the call, even telling Kay "Yeah, right." But when Knight said hello, Bowles' voice went up a few octaves.

"Oh my God. How are you?" he said in between fits of laughter. " . . . Thank you so much for even calling, I really appreciate it."

Bowles' infatuation with The Empress of Soul is well-documented. That's why the seven-time Grammy Award winner traveled to MetLife Stadium on Sunday to show her support for the Jets. Knight, however, arrived late to the game and the Jets ended up losing, 24-17. But she still brought a smile to Bowles' face.

Knight joked that if the coach wants to be one of her Pips, "he's going to have to dance for me." And Bowles was quick to comply.

"I can do that," he said.

A beaming Bowles told the "Midnight Train to Georgia" singer that he's a "big" fan of her music, adding: "Believe me. I listen to you every day." And when he mentioned that her song "Where Peaceful Waters Flow" often gets him through the day, Knight replied: "I might have to do that for you one of these days . . . When we get to the Super Bowl. How about that?"

Said Bowles: "I'll take it."

But as nice as it was for Bowles to talk to Knight, their conversation did little to alleviate the frustration of losing to the Eagles.

After the singer hung up the phone, Bowles told Kay: "I was happy to hear her voice, but I'm still not cheered up."

Todd Bowles wants no repeat of Jets' flop vs. Eagles (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday September 28, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/todd-bowles-wants-no-repeat-of-jets-flop-vs-eagles-1.10901491

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Monday's video review didn't tell the Jets anything they didn't know.

"They ran the ball, we didn't. They got turnovers, we didn't. That's pretty cut-and-dried for us,'' Todd Bowles said a day after his team fell to 2-1 with a 24-17 home loss to the Eagles. "We've just got to play better.''

Five three-and-outs to start the game, four turnovers and one head-scratching lateral attempt by Brandon Marshall derailed the Jets' hopes of heading to London undefeated. But before they turned their full attention to Sunday's game against the AFC rival Dolphins (1-2), the Jets addressed their numerous miscues against Philly.

"It was messy,'' said quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who threw three interceptions. "Of our first six drives, five were three-and-outs. That's a recipe for disaster. It's such a slow start, trying to play from behind because of that all game. The 58 attempts, or whatever it was, is too many. That's not our formula for success.''

Bowles wasn't pleased with the 11-year veteran's decision- making during the game, and his assessment of Fitzpatrick's play didn't change the following day.

"I don't have to watch it again,'' Bowles said. "You throw three interceptions, whether they're tipped or dropped or whatever the case may be, they just can't happen. So my opinion's not going to change there.''

Without running back Chris Ivory (quadriceps) and receiver Eric Decker (knee), the Jets' offense struggled in the first half. That's why Marshall felt compelled to try to make something happen in the second quarter -- but the 31-year-old playmaker insisted he'll never try to throw a lateral again.

"I was 3-0 coming into the game,'' Marshall said of his successful attempts in the past. "Now I think the record for the rest of my career will be 3-1, because I'm never going to try that again.''

His lapse in judgment came in the second quarter with the Jets trailing 17-0. As Marshall was being tackled on a 15-yard completion, he tried to pitch the ball to tight end Jeff Cumberland, who was in no position to receive it. The ball hit the helmet of Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin, and Jordan Hicks picked it up and ran it back to the Jets' 36. Philly then scored on a 1-yard run by Darren Sproles to make it 24-0.

"The only positive about that play was the sideline was so close,'' Marshall said. "When you make a play like that and it's on the other side, that walk back to your sideline is like the worst ever.

"Good thing it was right by our sideline. I was able to take a few steps and I was right there.''

Marshall took the blame for what he called his "bonehead play'' after the game, adding: "The damage outweighs the reward so much.'' And it appears Jets Nation appreciated his honesty and accountability.

"The response was great with Jets fans,'' he said. "I actually said it was dumb and boneheaded, and the fans seemed to do more picking me up than knocking me down.''

As disappointing as Sunday's loss was, Bowles isn't focusing too much on the negative, just as he didn't focus too much on the positive after the 2-0 start.

"We didn't overreact to the two wins,'' he said. "We're not going to overreact to one loss.''

Right guard Willie Colon sprains MCL, out at least a week (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday September 28, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/right-guard-willie-colon-sprains-mcl-out-at-least-a-week-1.10901350

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - An MRI on Monday showed that Jets right guard Willie Colon sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Eagles.

The Bronx-born Hofstra alum is expected to miss "at least a week" and then will be re-evaluated, coach Todd Bowles said Monday. With Colon, 32, out for the game against the Dolphins in London, backup guard Brian Winters will get the start. Winters started 12 games as a rookie in 2013 and six last season before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Asked why the Jets chose to keep Winters over Oday Aboushi, whom they waived Sept. 15, Bowles said: "We thought Brian was tougher. Not that Oday was a bad player . . . but Winters showed some stuff in th spring, he was a little more mobile."

Antonio Cromartie blasted the son of Jets tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson, who tweeted disparaging comments about the cornerback and quarterback Geno Smith after Sunday's game. In one post, Johnson's son posted a photo of Smith posing with a young fan with the following caption: "Bum [expletive] Geno." He later tweeted a photo of Cromartie standing next to two young kids after the game with the comment: "Antonio Cromartie with 2 of his 15 kids."

Cromartie immediately fired back, writing: "Y the [expletive] you worried about my family. If it wasn't for your dad, you wouldn't be nothing in life @JimmieJ82. You better watch yourself son."

The Twitter account for @JimmieJ82 then tried to make amends before deleting his Twitter profile. "@CRO31 apologize for the tweet man, I really didn't mean anything by it. Stupid tweet. I hope I get to apologize to you in person," he wrote. "Those tweets were really stupid on my part. Will apologize to both of them if I get the chance."

Bowles acknowledged that the tweets came from Johnson's son. "Yeah, I was aware of it. We handled it in-house and we've got bigger fish to fry than that," he said.

As for Cromartie's response, Bowles said: "He's a parent, he's going to say what he has to to protect his kids. We've moved on. That's not going to stop what we're doing right now."

Richardson's return

"As of right now," Bowles assumes Sheldon Richardson will be back with the team after completing his four-game suspension.

The coach said the NFL has yet to contact the Jets about an additional suspension for the defensive tackle, who was arrested July 14 in Missouri. But even though Richardson will get "a bunch of reps," Bowles cautioned that he's not in football shape. "You can't just put a guy out there like that that hasn't been in pads full time, expecting him to come in and play," he said. "You have to make sure he doesn't get hurt as well."

Jeff Cumberland is going through the concussion protocol. If he's unable to play, the Jets probably will add another tight end, Bowles said . . . The Jets claimed former Seahawks safety Dion Bailey and waived safety Ronald Martin.

Lorenzo Mauldin a very fortunate Jet (Bob Glauber) Newsday September 28, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/bob-glauber/lorenzo-mauldin-a-very-fortunate-jet-1.10901571

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Lorenzo Mauldin found a quiet place in the Jets' locker room before Sunday's game against the Eagles and said a prayer. He asked God to let him forget.

"My thought process was not to think about what had happened while I'm on the field," the Jets rookie linebacker said Monday. "I prayed to God basically asking him to help me out when it comes to being out there on the field. I actually asked Him to help me forget."

Two weeks earlier, Mauldin lost consciousness when he was involved in a pileup after a sack of Johnny Manziel in the fourth quarter of the Jets' season-opening 31-10 win over the Browns. Mauldin got up after the play but staggered forward a few steps and crumpled to the turf. He lay motionless for several minutes before being placed on a backboard and removed from the field on a cart. Stunned teammates and fans feared the worst.

"I was really scared," wide receiver Brandon Marshall said after the game. "I saw him get up and try to take a couple of steps and he just collapsed right in front of me. It was scary."

As it turned out, Mauldin's injuries weren't as severe as initially thought. He was diagnosed with a concussion, although he didn't fully regain consciousness until the following morning.

Still, the emotions were raw and conflicted before he returned to play Sunday. Mauldin desperately wanted to return to the field but didn't want to play scared. Even though he still doesn't recall what happened on the play, he didn't want to hold back to avoid a similar injury.

In a game this violent, you cannot afford to lose your edge. It's almost as if you live in denial about the possibility of getting hurt. All players do it, and Mauldin is no exception. But it was much more of a challenge this time because of what had happened. "I had to not think about it and play like I didn't have the concussion," said Mauldin, who was cleared by Jets doctors and an independent neurologist involved in the NFL's concussion protocol. "I just wanted to have my mind on winning the game."

The Jets didn't win, falling to the Eagles, 24-17, for their first defeat of the season. Mauldin was in on only a handful of special-teams plays and less than a half-dozen plays on defense. But make no mistake: There was a victory in this game for the 22-year-old. He defeated the inevitable anxiety that went along with playing for the first time since his injury.

"Your thought process is to make a play to help your team out," Mauldin said. "Your adrenaline is going, so during the game, you're not even worried about what happened two weeks before. The only thing you're worried about is going out there and actually helping the team out and doing what you can."

Jets coach Todd Bowles had seen a former college teammate, Anthony Young, forced to retire from the NFL when he suffered a similar hit that caused a neck injury. So he was delighted that Mauldin quickly regained his health and did not have a neck problem. But he did feel the need to speak with Mauldin during the run-up to the game.

Page 9: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

9 | P a g e

"We talked on Friday and he was feeling good," said Bowles, who indicated Mauldin will play a more prominent role Sunday against the Dolphins in London. "I think it was . He wanted to go out there earlier than that. He wasn't worried about it. We were. We were just trying to be a little cautious."Mauldin returned to the field with a greater sense of gratitude, not just about being able to play but to know that so many cared so much about him. When he was hurt, social media was filled with get-well messages and prayers.

"They said I was coming in and out during the night, but I can't remember any of that stuff," he said. "They said I opened my eyes a couple of times but I just wasn't responsive. When I finally had the energy, my girlfriend was right there. I heard a lot of people. I heard Brandon Marshall, Dave Szott, and a couple of the doctors, and of course my girlfriend was talking to me in my ear."

He added, "I didn't know what was going on, and after I came to the next morning, my phone was blowing up, social media was blowing up, and people were praying for me and hoping I got well and sending their best wishes," Mauldin said. "I felt love."

This wasn't the first time Mauldin lost consciousness. He was on the wrong end of a hit-and-run accident while riding a moped at Louisville shortly before the start of the 2013 season.

"I felt the love from the city of Louisville, too," he said.

And it's certainly not the first time Mauldin has had adversity in his life. As a child growing up in Atlanta, he lived in at least a dozen foster homes with his brother. Now it is back to what he loves to do most. That's chasing quarterbacks and running backs -- and winning football games.

"I hope to satisfy the fans and everybody here in the city that supports the Jets," he said. "I just want to give them something to watch on Sundays."

Thank goodness he still has the chance.

FLORHAM PARK – Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoys the traditional 1 p.m. Sunday NFL starting times, especially when it’s a home game.

"I love the 1 o’clock game and getting home and eating food from the crock pot and doing all that," Fitzpatrick said Monday when asked about the Jets’ upcoming visit to London to play Miami on Sunday.

Well, how about some fish and chips after this game, Ryan?

The veteran quarterback has a point, in that this contest will be far outside the norm for the Jets, who haven’t played a regular-season game overseas. Miami, in contrast, has numerous players who were on the roster last year when the Dolphins routed Oakland at Wembley Stadium, also the site of Sunday’s game.

Still, despite the fact that he would prefer a more routine Sunday, Fitzpatrick has no problem with taking a trip to England.

"I think it’s exciting," he said. "I think guys think it’s cool to go over there. It will be a unique experience for all of us and hopefully bring the team together even more.

"Just getting our bodies acclimated and everything with the time change will be interesting," Fitzpatrick added.

London is five hours ahead of Eastern Daylight time, so the game will begin at 2:30 p.m. local time, 9:30 a.m. here. The Jets will practice Wednesday and Thursday, and then fly from Newark to London after Thursday’s practice.

Coach Todd Bowles said the team chose not to leave earlier in the week because it wanted to have its two "bulk" days of practice here. The Jets will practice in England on Friday and then have a walkthrough, as usual, the day before. The team brought in a sleep specialist to counsel the players on how best to prepare themselves for the approximately seven-hour flight overseas and the time change.

"It’s different going over to London," Bowles said. "It’s not like going to [a normal] away game, because the time change is such a difference for you. … No matter how you prepare for them, the sleeping and the sleep you get and the time you play is going to be a little different. I don’t think anybody is going to adjust [fully]."

The Jets also will be forced to do some adjusting on the field this week. Veteran right guard Willie Colon suffered a sprained MCL in his knee in the loss to Philadelphia two days ago, and Bowles said he will be out for at least one game and then will be re-evaluated after that. The Jets have a bye after returning to the United States and then will play host to Washington on Oct. 18. Third-year pro Brian Winters will start in Colon’s place. He started the last 12 games of the 2013 season and the first six of the 2014 campaign before a knee injury sidelined him.

"I think Brian’s a tough guy," Bowles said. "He’s played before. He’s played against good competition. Obviously with [Ndamukong] Suh being one of the best in the league, he’s going to have his hands full.’’

BRIEFS: Bowles said CB Darrelle Revis has a sore hamstring. It’s unclear what his status will be for Sunday’s game. TE Jeff Cumberland suffered a concussion Sunday and has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol. … Bowles said the Jets are planning for DE Sheldon Richardson to be reinstated from his NFL-imposed suspension Monday, but acknowledged the league could impose additional discipline for his July arrest. … The Jets claimed safety Dion Bailey off waivers from Seattle and waived safety Ronald Martin, who had been claimed off waivers from the Seahawks on Sept. 6.

Bowles indicated he was not upset with CB Antonio Cromartie, who angrily tweeted back at Jimmie Johnson, son of the team’s tight ends coach of the same name, after he ripped Cromartie and reserve QB Geno Smith. "We handled it in-house, and we’ve got bigger fish to fry," Bowles said. … Bowles was surprised during a radio interview on ESPN 98.7 FM when legendary singer Gladys Knight was introduced on the other line. Bowles has mentioned repeatedly how he is a huge fan of hers. "Oh, my gosh," Bowles exclaimed when he realized it was Knight.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Sheldon Richardson's four-game suspension ends Monday -- unless he's zapped by the NFL for additional discipline because of his July arrest.

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles said he hasn't received any updates from the league office, so he's operating under the premise that Richardson will be eligible to return as soon as they return home from playing the Miami Dolphins in London. But Bowles carefully couched his remarks, knowing the situation could change at any moment.

On whether he expects Richardson to return next week: "As of right now, yes."

On whether he has received any word from the league on the possibility of additional discipline: "Not yet."

Richardson was suspended for violating the substance-abuse policy. Two weeks later, he was arrested near his home in St. Louis on a charge of resisting arrest, a misdemeanor. He allegedly refused to stop for police, driving 143 miles per hour with a child in the car. Police also smelled marijuana in the car, but were unable to charge him because they found no pot in the vehicle. They also discovered a gun in the car, but that didn't violate any laws in the state of Missouri.

Nevertheless, the arrest is an apparent violation of the league's personal-conduct policy, which would mean another suspension. But the league might wait until the case is adjudicated before handing down a decision. Richardson has another court hearing scheduled for next Monday, but his attorney said there will be a 30-day continuance, according to N.J. Advance Media.

When he returns, Richardson won't walk back into a full-time role.

"He’s got to get in football shape," Bowles said. "You can’t put a guy out there like that that hasn’t been in pads full time and expect him to come in and play. Will he get some reps? Yeah, he’ll get a bunch of reps, but you’ve got to make sure he doesn’t get hurt as well."

Jets guard Willie Colon will miss at least one game with knee sprain (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York September 28, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/54592/jets-g-willie-colon-will-miss-at-least-one-game-with-knee-sprain

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets will be without right guard Willie Colon when they face defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in London.

An MRI Monday revealed a sprained MCL in Colon's knee and he will be sidelined "at least a week," according to coach Todd Bowles. Brian Winters, who replaced Colon in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, will start at right guard.

All things considered, the news wasn't terrible. The Jets feared a long-term injury for Colon, who has been hampered by a chronic knee issue for two years. With the bye coming up after the Miami game, Colon could be ready to play in Week 6, Oct. 18 against the Washington Redskins.

In the meantime, the Jets will go with Winters, a former third-round pick who has 18 career starts. They had high hopes for Winters when they drafted him, but he has developed slowly, especially as a pass protector. In 2014, he suffered a season-ending knee injury and was relegated to the bench when they signed free-agent left guard James Carpenter. Winters was supposed to push Colon at right guard, but that competition never materialized.

Page 12: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

Battling for a backup spot, Winters beat out fellow 2013 draft pick Oday Aboushi, who was waived after Week 1. As luck would have it, Aboushi started Sunday for the Houston Texans.

"We thought Brian was tough," said Bowles, re-visiting the Winters-Aboushi decision. "Not that Oday was a bad player, but Brian showed some stuff in the spring. He was a little more mobile that way. They're different as players, and we just decided to go with Brian."

In other injury news, tight end Jeff Cumberland has a concussion and his status for this week is up in the air. With only one other tight end on the roster (Kellen Davis), they'd have to add a player by Sunday. Rookie tight end Wes Saxton, on the practice squad, is an option.

Bowles expressed optimism that running back Chris Ivory (strained quadriceps) will play, but he was non-committal on wide receiver Eric Decker (sprained knee). Cornerback Darrelle Revis (hamstring) is sore, according to Bowles, but he's expected to be ready.

The Jets made a minor roster move, acquiring safety Dion Bailey on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. He was released when Kam Chancellor ended his holdout. To make room, the Jets released safety Ronald Martin.

Jets WR Jeremy Kerley lobbies for action, calls himself a QB's 'best friend' (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York September 28, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/54578/jets-wr-jeremy-kerley-lobbies-for-action-calls-himself-a-qbs-best-friend

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Down two wide receivers, the New York Jets turned their desperate eyes to old friend Jeremy Kerley, who made it feel like old times.

After playing only one offensive snap in each of the first two games, the Forgotten Man played 71 of 79 snaps and caught six passes (including a touchdown), albeit it for only a 33-yard day. The Jets dressed only four receivers in their 24-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, including rookie Devin Smith, so they really had no choice but to remove Kerley from moth balls.

Was this a one-day reprieve or the start of something new? It's probably the former, but that depends on Eric Decker (sprained knee) and Chris Owusu (knee scope). We know Owusu won't play Sunday against the Miami Dolphins; Decker's status is up in the air. If he returns this week, it probably will mean a return to the bench for Kerley.

Kerley believes the team would be missing out if he goes back to the bottom of the depth chart.

"I feel like I am a quarterback’s best friend," he said. "I don't know, that's how I feel. I just feel like I move differently than everybody else out on the field.

"Everybody is different, everybody brings different talents to the game. I feel like my intangible is my ability to create separation and that is at the line of scrimmage. I don’t try to play outside myself. I know how to play within myself and use what I have to my advantage."

The problem is, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey prefers big receivers with versatility. Kerley is a smaller receiver who plays almost exclusively in the slot, Decker's new domain. The Jets will have a tough decision to make when Decker and Owusu are healthy. They probably want to keep Smith involved -- he's the prized draft pick -- but they're unlikely to dress six receivers for a game. Kerley is the only punt returner, so that creates roster-management issues.

Speaking of Smith, he played a lot more in his debut than anyone expected -- 64 snaps. It wasn't an eye-popping day, as he caught only three for 39 yards (nine targets) and he contributed to an interception by not fighting for a 50-50 ball in the end zone.

A look at the Jets' snap counts:

NEW YORK POST Why a sleep therapist is vital to the Jets’ gameplan this week (Brian Costello) New York Post September 29, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/09/29/why-a-sleep-therapist-is-vital-to-the-jets-gameplan-this-week/

The Jets are ready to go London calling this week with a trip to England to face the Dolphins.

The team began preparations for the trip in the spring by mapping out the logistics. Now players are being coached on how to prepare. A sleep specialist spoke to the Jets on Monday and gave them tips on how to help their body adjust to the five-hour time difference.

“It’s different,” coach Todd Bowles said. “It’s different going over to London. It’s not like going to an away game because the time change is such a difference. You have to prepare for these things a lot in the spring. No matter how much you prepare for them, the sleeping and the sleep you get and the time you play is going to be a little different. I don’t think anybody is going to adjust full time.”

The Jets are practicing in Florham Park on Wednesday and Thursday and then flying to London on Thursday night. They will have a short practice there Friday. Sunday’s game starts at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time, 2:30 p.m. in London. So if players have not adjusted, they will feel as if they’re playing first thing in the morning.

Page 14: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall said the specialist advised players to get up to nine hours of sleep per night this week and to try not to look at bright lights before going to sleep, among other tips. The players also had a tip sheet hanging in their lockers.

“It’s a five time-zone difference, so you have to do a great job of getting your body accustomed to that time zone,” Marshall said.

Players and coaches in the NFL are creatures of habit and this will disturb their routine, but most said they are trying to see the positives of going to London.

“I love the 1 o’clock game and eating food from the crockpot and doing all that, but I think it’s exciting too,” quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. “Guys think it’s cool to go over there. It will be a unique experience for all of us and hopefully bring the team together even more.”

This is the first regular-season game the Jets have ever played outside North America. They played a preseason game in Tokyo in 2003.

Bowles said he spoke with Rams coach Jeff Fisher — who took his team to London in 2012 — in the spring to get his advice on technical aspects of the trip, such as setting up meeting rooms and what to expect to have and what to do without. He also asked him about the types of cleats to use on the grass field at Wembley Stadium.

“It’s been going on for a couple of years now,” Bowles said. “Nobody likes to travel that far, but it’s like going to a West Coast game for us. It’s something we knew was coming in the spring, and we prepared for it.”

Center Nick Mangold has been to London three other times — once as a child, in 2012 to watch his sister, Holley, compete in the Olympics and in July as part of an NFL trip to promote football there. He does not think the time change will be that big of a deal.

“They’re going to have to deal with it, too,” Mangold said of the Dolphins, who played in London last season. “It’s something we’re all going to have to fight through. It’s going to make us focus that much more.”

Marshall said the team will be prepared.

“We’ll be fine,” he said. “Guys are pros. We’re taking all the proper steps, understanding what we need to do with sleep, when to sleep, when to eat, do all those things. We’ll be fine. We have a veteran group and we have young guys that follow the veteran guys. No concern and there will be no excuse.”

Brandon Marshall’s illustrious lateral career is finished (Brian Costello) New York Post September 28, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/09/28/brandon-marshalls-illustrious-lateral-career-is-finished/

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall vowed there never will be a repeat of his lateral-turned-fumble against the Eagles.

“I’m never going to try that again,” Marshall said Monday.

Marshall tried to flip the ball to tight end Jeff Cumberland in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the Eagles. The ball hit Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin in the facemask and was recovered by linebacker Jordan Hicks. The Eagles scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Marshall called it “the worst play in NFL history.”

“The only thing positive about that play was the sideline was so close,” Marshall said. “When you make a play like that and it’s on the other side, that walk back to your sideline is like the worst ever. The good thing was it was right by our sideline.”

Marshall said he actually pulled off a lateral three other times in his career, but won’t ever try it again.

“Now I think the record for the rest of my career is going to be 3-1,” Marshall said.

Right guard Willie Colon has a sprained right MCL and won’t play this week against the Dolphins. He will miss at least this week and maybe more. The Jets have a bye week after they play Miami.

Brian Winters, who started 13 games in 2013 and six in 2014 at left guard, will start in Colon’s place. The Jets kept Winters over Oday Aboushi after training camp.

“We thought Brian was tough,” coach Todd Bowles said. “Not that Oday was a bad player, because I think he started at left guard this week for Houston. Winters showed some stuff in the spring. He was a little more mobile that way and both are different types of players. He was just the guy we decided to go with.”

Bowles has made his admiration for singer Gladys Knight clear in recent weeks. On Monday, he got the chance to speak with her during his weekly appearance on “The Michael Kay Show” on 98.7 ESPN.

Kay told Bowles that Knight was on the line and the coach said, “Yeah, right.” But he was talking to her moments later.

“I’m a big Gladys music fan,” Bowles said. “Believe me. I listen to you every day.”

Knight actually attended Sunday’s game, but said she was late.

Kay asked Knight if Bowles could fill in as one of the Pips.

“Absolutely,” she said. “They be dancing on that field. He’s going to have to dance for me.”

“I can do that,” Bowles said.

Bowles said cornerback Darrelle Revis should be fine after tweaking his hamstring on Sunday. … Cumberland suffered a concussion and is in the protocol. The Jets may need to add a tight end if Cumberland can’t play, Bowles said. … Bowles sounded optimistic about running back Chris Ivory returning from a quad injury this week. … Wide receiver Eric Decker’s (knee) status sounded more up in the air. Bowles said he needs to see what Decker can do Wednesday in practice.

Bowles said the NFL has not informed the Jets of any additional discipline for defensive end Sheldon Richardson, whose four-game suspension ends Monday. Bowles said his expectation is Richardson will be able to rejoin the team then. … The Jets claimed safety Dion Bailey off waivers from the Seahawks. They waived safety Ronald Martin to make room on the roster.

How the ‘best LB in the NFL’ wisely flies under radar for Jets (Mike Cannizzaro) New York Post September 28, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/09/28/how-the-best-lb-in-the-nfl-wisely-flies-under-radar-for-jets/

David Harris did not, has not and will not ever stand on a stool in the middle of the locker room and urge on his Jets teammates with a crazed, raised voice.

The Jets’ veteran linebacker is not that kind of player nor is he that kind of leader — which is not to say he isn’t one of the team’s most important players and leaders.

Page 16: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

16 | P a g e

In the wake of Sunday’s lackluster 24-17 home loss to the Eagles that soiled the Jets’ 2-0 start, Harris’ teammates would serve themselves well to follow his lead. Follow what he does on the field, which consists of making play after play quietly and efficiently — think Bill Belichick’s mantra: “Do your job’’ — and his demeanor off of it, is heavy on even-keel and light on overreaction.

“It’s just as important not to overreact to a win as it is not to overreact to a loss,’’ coach Todd Bowles said Monday. “We didn’t overreact to our two wins and we’re not going to overreact to a loss.’’

Equal doses of calm and perspective are the proper prescription for what ails the Jets after Sunday’s loss, in which they fell behind 24-0 in the first half thanks to their inability to match the Eagles’ urgency. And no player on the Jets exudes calm and perspective better than Harris, who has spent all of his nine NFL seasons with the team and has seen every high and low imaginable along the way.

Yet when the Jets arrive in London on Friday morning in advance of their game Sunday against the Dolphins at Wembley Stadium, there will not be a lot of British NFL fans donning green No. 52 Harris jerseys roaming about the airport, streets or pubs.

Appropriately, Harris’ locker in the team’s Florham Park, N.J. training facility is tucked in a far corner of the room. There is not a lot of reporter traffic there, because Harris is not what we in the business call “a good quote.’’ The next flashy, bold controversial thing Harris says will be the first.

After Sunday’s loss, even though it was Harris’ forced fumble on Eagles running back Ryan Mathews in the fourth quarter that gave the Jets a chance to get back into the game, there was not a single Harris quote in a story written after the game. Nor was there after he forced a key Andrew Luck fumble the previous week in Indianapolis.

Given his low-key demeanor and the way he quietly goes about his business, Harris is the model Bowles player, because that is exactly the way the Jets coach carries himself.

Harris is the antithesis of former Jets linebacker Bart Scott: All substance, no self-promotion.

“If he was on social media he’d probably have been to like five Pro Bowls by now, but Dave’s a quiet guy; he just comes in and does his job,’’ defensive end Leger Douzable said.

“He’s probably the best linebacker in the NFL,’’ fellow linebacker Demario Davis said. “He’s just under the radar because he chooses to be under the radar. This is a guy who has 1,000 tackles in his career. He can get all the media attention and all the marketing he wants. But that’s not his style, not his character.’’

Harris’ style and character comes directly from his blue-collar upbringing in Michigan.

“That’s how I’ve always been since I was little,’’ Harris said. “In pee-wee football, my coach always preached, ‘Act like you’ve been there before.’ I just try to be the ultimate team player. I guess they say I’m my father’s child. He was the same way — go about his business, do what he’s got to do to get the job done without any recognition or fanfare.’’

Harris’ father, Timothy, worked as a die-cast technician in a Michigan automobile plant.

When the Jets signed Harris to a three-year, $21.5 million contract extension in March with $15 million guaranteed, there was instant criticism from some around the league about how they overpaid a 31-year-old linebacker entering his ninth season without ever having been voted to a Pro Bowl.

Harris heard the chatter, but refused to let it rattle him.

“Every year, people say you can’t do something — whether it’s as an individual or a team,’’ he said. “But you have to put that out of your mind and go out and do your job.’’

That’s exactly the path, in the bigger picture, the Jets need to take on their way to London this week.

Police announce charges to Cromartie’s wife after profiling claim (Brian Costello) New York Post September 28, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/09/28/police-announce-charges-to-cromarties-wife-after-profiling-claim/

The wife of Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who accused Madison, N.J. police of pulling her over because she is black on Friday, has been issued summons for driving while on a cell phone and having tinted windows.

The Madison Police Department issued a statement on its Facebook page that also said it discovered Terricka Cromartie’s complaint about being pulled over through a media inquiry and social media. The police said they “proactively referred” Cromartie’s allegations to “the proper county authority as per the New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines.”

The statement also says, “Ms. Cromartie’s allegations will be thoroughly and objectively investigated to their logical conclusion.”

Cromartie posted on Instagram on Friday that she was “pulled over for driving while black in Madison.” She also posted a video of the traffic stop. She later took the posts down.

The statement said the summonses for operating a motor vehicle while on a cell phone and having tinted windows “will be adjudicated in the Madison Municipal Court in the near future.”

How are Jets preparing to play Miami Dolphins in London? (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media September 29, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/09/how_are_jets_preparing_to_travel_to_london_to_play.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — The Jets play the Dolphins in London on Sunday, and their plan is to fly across the Atlantic on Thursday evening, after practice.

That obviously gives them a little more than two days to adjust to the five-hour time difference. It's going to be a bit of a challenge—but one the Dolphins will obviously face, too.

Head coach Todd Bowles admitted "nobody likes to travel that far" for a game, but the league has been sending teams to London during the regular season since 2007. The NFL's world now occupies lots of other parts of the world, really.

Bowles likened the UK trip to a reverse west-coast jaunt, of sorts.

"It's not like going to an away game [in the U.S.], because the time change is such a difference for you," Bowles said. "No matter how you prepare for them, the sleeping and the sleep you get, and the time you play is going to be a little different. I don't think anybody is going to adjust full time."

The Dolphins, too, plan to leave Thursday evening, so their adjustment will be the same. The Jets are scheduled to arrive at Heathrow Airport at 6 a.m. Friday (1 a.m., New Jersey time), with the Dolphins slated to touch down an hour later.

18 | P a g e

Sunday's game will kick off at 1:30 p.m., London time, which will be 9:30 a.m. back in New Jersey.

Bowles said preparations for the London trip began in the spring. He had given some thought to leaving earlier in the week, but the demands of a regular-season game-week schedule—Monday for reviewing the previous game, Tuesday for developing the game plan, Wednesday and Thursday for installing that game plan—made the logistics too difficult.

"The two bulk days, Wednesday and Thursday, we wanted to get here," Bowles said.

The Jets had a sleep specialist speak to the team on Monday. Each player was also given specific instructions about sleep patterns, hydration, limits on caffeine, and even the use of devices like cell phones and laptops before bedtime.

Bowles said the sleep specialist was brought in at the suggestion of the Jets' trainers and doctors.

"He said it would take us almost 48 hours to adjust," wide receiver Brandon Marshall said.

The Jets will practice Friday afternoon at a rugby field some 15 miles southeast of Wembley Stadium, the site of Sunday's game. Afterward, there will be a community day that includes football activity with London children. Saturday, they'll have their usual walk-through, plus a fan fest and rally involving both teams at Trafalgar Square.

Bowles said he had consulted back in the spring with Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who coached a game in London three years ago.

"Just talking about the set up and the meeting rooms and the outlets, and those type of things," Bowles said. "Getting ready to play, what you have, what you don't have, how the grass is, and what kind of cleats, and those things we went through. Most of it was technical stuff."

NFL players are creatures of habit, especially during the season. The Jets' normal game-week routine will obviously be a bit different this week. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said the acclimation "will be interesting."

"I love the one o'clock game and getting home and eating food from the crock pot and doing all that," Fitzpatrick said. "But I think it's exciting, too. I think guys think it's cool to go over there."

Jets' Brandon Marshall actually once pulled off a desperate lateral play in a historic moment (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media September 29, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/09/brandon_marshall_jets_2.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — One of the enduring, bumbling moments from the Jets' 24-17 loss Sunday to the Eagles is wide receiver Brandon Marshall unsuccessfully attempting a lateral to tight end Jeff Cumberland, as Marshall was being tackled.

Marshall essentially handed the ball back to the Eagles, in a critical moment that absolutely did not call for such a desperate play.

In a game's final moments? Yes, perhaps it would've been appropriate then. But no logical person could ever argue that it made sense in that moment.

And Marshall didn't try to argue that. Not on Sunday, when he harshly criticized himself. Not on Monday, either, as he spoke at length about the foolish play.

Page 19: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

But Marshall did mention Monday that he's made a lateral play like that work before. Three times, in fact, according to Marshall.

He said he once lateraled back to Brandon Stokley after a catch, when they were with the Broncos. Marshall said he also did it during a Sunday night game in his second season, 2007, also when he was in Denver.

And Marshall correctly recalled that he successfully performed a post-catch lateral during a historic moment in 2009. The Broncos lost 28-16 that day to the Colts. But Marshall set an NFL record, which still stands, with 21 catches in the game.

Marshall's record-breaking catch, his 21st, came on fourth-and-18 with two minutes remaining. After making the 7-yard catch, Marshall lateraled to offensive guard Chris Kuper, who picked up 7 more yards, but was 4 shy of the first down. The Colts ran out the clock after that.

That moment, though, demanded a lateral play. The Broncos were down 12 points and had fourth-and-18 at their own 12-yard line.

After botching his lateral Sunday, in a situation that never called for such a desperate move, Marshall said he's done with the play.

"Coming into the game, I was actually 3-0," Marshall said of those three laterals that worked. "Now I think my record for the rest of my career is going to be 3-1. I'm never going to try that again."

Marshall tried his lateral with 4:38 remaining in Sunday's first half. The Jets were down 17-0 and had first-and-10 at their own 28. It was the first play of a drive. Marshall caught a 15-yard pass — a good start to the drive. And then he essentially gave the ball away. The Eagles converted with a 36-yard touchdown drive to go up 24-0.

In the fourth quarter, with the Jets down 24-14 and 3:28 remaining, Marshall had a pass go off his hands on second-and-10 from the Eagles' 37. The ball glanced off Marshall's hands at the 18, and was picked off. Another missed scoring chance, because of a Marshall miscue. He short-armed the catch attempt, leading to the deflection and the pick.

Marshall is an excellent player who did some good things Sunday. He caught 10 passes for 109 yards and a 16-yard touchdown. Through three games, he has 23 catches for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He has a touchdown in each game. He preceded his 109-yard game with a 101-yard showing. He's a major weapon for the Jets' offense, particularly in the red zone.

But his two mistakes Sunday, especially that failed lateral, spoiled a lot of his positive contributions. He knows this better than anyone.

"I'm sure a lot of guys were laying in their bed last night and feeling a knot in their stomach and having a little anxiety about how they may have played," Marshall said, as he admitted the failed lateral stuck with him into the evening. "It's hard to pull any positives out of a game like that. It was an ugly game.

"The only thing positive about that [lateral] play was the sideline was so close. When you make a play like that, and it's on the other side, that walk back to your sideline is like the worst ever. So good thing it was right by our sideline, so I was just able to take like two steps and I was right there."

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/09/jets_sheldon_richardsons_next_court_hearing_to_be.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — Defensive end Sheldon Richardson is eligible to come off suspension in exactly one week. While Richardson could still face additional discipline from the NFL because of a subsequent arrest, are the Jets are operating under the assumption he'll be re-joining them in seven days?

"As of right now, yes," head coach Todd Bowles said.

Richardson has a court hearing in St. Charles County, Mo., scheduled for next Monday. But his attorney, Matt Fry, told NJ Advance Media there will be a 30-day continuance because discovery and negotiations are still ongoing. That, of course, means there likely won't be any resolution to Richardson's case any time soon.

Richardson, one of the Jets' best players, was suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's recreational drug policy. He had failed multiple tests for marijuana. The Jets play their fourth game on Sunday against the Dolphins in London, and next week they have a bye.

Two weeks after he was suspended, Richardson was charged with resisting arrest and traffic violations after police in St. Charles County, Mo., clocked him allegedly driving his Bentley 143 miles per hour with a loaded gun and a 12-year-old child among his three passengers. After police caught up with the car, all of the passengers allegedly smelled of marijuana.

The gun was registered, and prosecutors decided there wasn't enough evidence to charge Richardson with endangering the welfare of a child or for anything marijuana-related.

Whether Richardson faces any additional discipline for the arrest—and when that discipline could be meted out—is entirely up to the league office, according to the terms of the NFL's personal conduct policy. An NFL spokesman would only say that Richardson's case was still pending. Given this latest delay—Richardson's legal team had already been granted a continuance in late August—it's starting to look like any added NFL punishment may not come until after this season.

Bowles said he had "no idea" if the NFL would try to impose any more discipline before Richardson's return. Rookie Leonard Williams has started in Richardson's absence.

During his suspension, Richardson has been permitted to be at One Jets Drive to work out and to take part in meetings, though he has not been allowed to practice.

Asked how Richardson would fit in once he's eligible again, Bowles said, "He's got to get football shape. You can't put a guy out there like that that hasn't been in pads full-time and expect him to come in and play. Will he get some reps? Yeah, he'll get a bunch or reps, but you've got to make sure that he doesn't get hurt, as well."

The NFL's collective bargaining agreement mandates that players be given four consecutive days off during the bye week, so Richardson won't be able to practice consistently until the week of Oct. 12.

Bowles said Richardson would be able to get back into the swing of things "in short stints," which sounds like the plan would be to ease Richardson into the lineup once he can play again against Washington on Oct. 18.

Brian Winters to replace Willie Colon (knee) as Jets' right guard, just in time for Ndamukong Suh (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media September 28, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/09/jets_right_guard_brian_winters_willie_colon_knee.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — Jets coach Todd Bowles said Monday that right guard Willie Colon sprained his knee in Sunday's loss to the Eagles, and will miss at least this week's meeting with the Dolphins in London.

It's a sprained medial collateral ligament for Colon.

"He'll be out at least a week, and we'll reevaluate him after that," Bowles said.

The Jets have their bye week after facing the Dolphins in London. Their next game after the bye is Oct. 18 against Washington.

Brian Winters is now the starting right guard, Bowles said. Winters replaced Colon on Sunday after Colon got hurt. Colon played 32 snaps, Winters 47. Winters will have the challenge this week of facing Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

"Obviously, with Suh being one of the best in the league, he'll have his hands full," Bowles said.

Winters was a third-round draft pick by the Jets in 2013. He started 12 games that season at left guard and mostly struggled. He started six games there last season, and struggled again, before he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and was sidelined for the remainder of the season.

In 2013, Pro Football Focus rated Winters 77th out of 81 offensive guards in the NFL. In 2014, Winters rated 65th out of 78.

This offseason, the Jets signed a new left guard, James Carpenter, and pitted Colon in a right guard competition against Winters and Oday Aboushi, another third-year pro. The Jets wound up cutting Aboushi and keeping Winters as Colon's backup.

Though Colon is 32 and had troublesome knees (even before this MCL sprain), he was able to beat out two younger guys, Winters and Aboushi, to win the job.

Colon has started all 35 games for the Jets at right guard since he signed with them before the 2013 season. Aboushi replaced Winters as the left guard last year, after Winters tore his ACL.

Against the Eagles, Winters was beaten in the fourth quarter by defensive end Brandon Bair, who deflected Ryan Fitzpatrick's pass, leading to an interception.

Winters on Monday explained what happened on the play: "I didn't realize that Fitz was running out of the pocket. He was outside the pocket. I thought I drifted my guy past the play, and he was still there."

The pick happened with 6:28 left in the game, when the Jets trailed 24-14, and had reached the Eagles' 30-yard line. So it was costly.

Despite this hiccup, Bowles was mostly pleased with how Winters played Sunday.

"He graded out pretty good," Bowles said. "Nobody played great on both sides of the ball."

Said Winters: "I thought I played well. Obviously, it's never fun to come in when you're down, and you're going to throw the ball 24/7."

The Jets lost 24-17 to the Eagles after falling behind 24-0.

Winters believes he is "definitely improved" from last season. Suh will test that notion.

As for why the Jets kept Winters over Aboushi, Bowles said, "We thought Brian was tough. Not that Oday was a bad player. But Winters showed some stuff in the spring. He was a little more mobile. Both different types of players."

Page 22: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

Aboushi was caught with marijuana during the offseason, which resulted in a one-game suspension by the NFL to start this season. The Jets cut him after his suspension ended. Bowles said Aboushi's weed arrest had nothing to do with why the Jets decided to keep Winters over him. Aboushi now plays for the Texans. Back_to_Top

Jets' Antonio Cromartie not backing down from Twitter war with son of tight ends coach. (Seth Walder) New York Daily News September 28, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/jets-insider-cromartie-not-backing-twitter-war-article-1.2377845

Antonio Cromartie was in no mood to apologize for his twitter flap with the apparent son of tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson.

The account @JimmieJ82, which apparently belongs to Johnson’s son, tweeted a picture of Cromartie after the game and wrote, “Antonio Cromartie with 2 of his 15 kids.”

The Jets cornerback responded with an angry tweet of his own: “Y the f you worried about my family. If it wasn’t for your dad you (wouldn’t) be nothing in life @JimmieJ82. You better watch yourself son.” On Monday Cromartie told TMZ, “I’m not going to apologize for what I said in regards to my kids. You don’t take a picture of my kids and talk trash.”

@JimmieJ82 also took a shot at Geno Smith, posting a picture of the Jets QB posing with a fan and tweeting, “Bum ass Geno Smith.”

Asked about the spat on Monday, Jets coach Todd Bowles said, “I was aware of it. We handled it in-house and we’ve got bigger fish to fry than that.”

As for Cromartie responding to the initial tweet, Bowles said, “He’s a parent, he’s going to say what he is to protect his kids. So we move on.”

NO COLON FOR FISH

Willie Colon has a sprained MCL and will miss at least the team’s game against the Dolphins in London on Sunday. That means Brian Winters, who filled in for Colon after he left Sunday’s loss against the Eagles, will start against Ndamukong Suh.

Winters was a key component on a critical play in the loss, when he allowed Brandon Bair to get by him to tip a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass that eventually became an interception. Other than that play, Bowles seemed relatively pleased with how Winters played against the Eagles.

Winters, a third-round pick in 2013, started 12 games his rookie year and six last season before tearing his ACL. He generally has not played well in his time as a starter.

SHELDON DUE BACK ... MAYBE

The Jets are operating under the premise that Sheldon Richardson will be reinstated from his suspension next Monday. Richardson was suspended for four games for a failed marijuana test, but has yet to received discipline for a July incident in which he was allegedly driving at 143 mph and charged with resisting arrest.

Bowles said the Jets have not heard from the league yet regarding discipline from the July incident.Asked if he thought discipline could come before Richardson is reinstated on Monday, Bowles said, “I honestly have no idea.”

QUICK HITS

Darrelle Revis said he was “fine” after tweaking his hamstring Sunday. ...The Jets brought in a sleep specialist to help with the transition of playing in London this week. “No matter how you prepare for ’em, the sleeping and the sleep you get and the time you play is going to be a little different,” Bowles said. The team is leaving Thursday night because Bowles wanted to have practice in Florham Park on Wednesday and Thursday. ... Jeff Cumberland is going through the concussion protocol. ...the Jets claimed S Dion Bailey off waivers from Seattle and cut Ronald Martin.

Loss to Eagles shouldn't take Jets out of playoff conversation (Manish Mehta) New York Daily News September 28, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/mehta-jets-belong-playoff-conversation-article-1.2377821

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall should pack it up and call it a year. Todd Bowles should hide in a basement somewhere. The Jets should take off the next 13 weeks.

How dare this team lose a non-conference game in September with an undefeated season so plainly in sight?

The overreaction police levied felonious charges in the wake of the Jets’ 24-17 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Bowles’ bunch morphed from contenders to frauds in the eyes of the eternally clueless. The predictable reaction covered the spectrum of nonsense.

Fitzpatrick stinks.

Marshall is dumb.

The linebackers can’t cover anyone. (Well, that’s actually true.)

The Jets are doomed.

There were plenty of dazed souls spilling out of the White Out at MetLife Stadium. The Jets didn’t transform into the 1972 Dolphins simply because rookie general manager Mike Maccagnan spent wads of cash to patch holes on a four-win team, but they are far from fugazi.

“It’s just as important not to overreact to a loss as to a win,” Bowles said Monday. “We didn’t overreact to the two wins. We’re not going to overreact to one loss.”

The Jets are rebuilding on the fly. They’re far from a finished product, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a threat now.

Bowles has the personnel to be in the playoff conversation this season. There’s just not much margin for error for a team with a dearth of offensive playmakers. That was painfully obvious Sunday when Fitzpatrick opened up the all-Marshall-all-the-time chapter in Chan Gailey’s playbook.

“They’re always going to make a point to take away Brandon because he’s a superior player,” Fitzpatrick said after the Eagles sent waves of bodies at the wideout, including linebacker Connor Barwin to jam him

Page 24: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

at the line of scrimmage. “There was some unorthodox stuff (Sunday), where they were going to try to take him away. But you can’t take away No. 15 all the time.”

The 31-year-old Marshall is still a difference maker, but Fitzpatrick needs his full complement of options (see: Eric Decker and Chris Ivory) for the Jets to have a chance to consistently win. The veteran signal caller is not going to carry a team, but he can be a solid and steady leader in a controlled environment.

His three-interception game against Philly shouldn’t be cause for concern. Fitzpatrick had two picks in his first 58 pass attempts to help the Jets win the first two games. He had three picks, including one that went right off Marshall’s hands, in 58 attempts on Sunday.

Bowles didn’t excuse away Fitzpatrick’s interceptions, which also included one deflected near the line of scrimmage, but any suggestion that Geno Smith should replace the veteran right now is laughable on myriad levels.

Fitzpatrick still gives the Jets the best opportunity to contend for the playoffs this year. His chemistry with Marshall and Decker is a pivotal reason why Bowles’ offense was good enough in the first couple weeks.

Smith missed the entire preseason after getting clocked in the jaw by his angry, debt-seeking former teammate IK Enemkpali. It will take time for him to establish a rapport with his two most important pass-catching weapons. There’s no guarantee that the connection will ever reach the level that the three veterans have already established.

It’s unrealistic to think Smith will be anywhere near as helpful to his receivers as Fitzpatrick, who provides new information to — and quickly absorbs information from — Marshall and Decker.

These Jets are far different from John Idzik’s Jets, which bent over backward to accommodate Smith. These Jets aren’t going to dedicate (waste?) a season to find out if Smith can be a franchise quarterback.

The only thing Fitzpatrick and Smith have in common is that neither is the long-term solution for the organization. The Jets will hope to land a franchise signal caller this offseason.

Fitzpatrick provides stability for a team sprinkled with (expensive) win-now players. His limitations were on display against the Eagles with every incompletion downfield, but Bowles can make a legitimate playoff push with him because of the Jets’ formidable defense. The same can’t be said about Smith.

The narrative didn’t change with one loss. The Jets can still be relevant for the next three months.

Gladys Knight calls superfan Todd Bowles during Jets coach's appearance on Michael Kay Show (Seth Walder) New York Daily News September 28, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/gladys-knight-calls-superfan-todd-bowles-michael-kay-show-article-1.2377646

Todd Bowles couldn't get a win this week, but he did get one wish: to talk to Gladys Knight. Bowles, a Knight superfan, sounded pretty happy about it.

ESPN Radio set it up, having Knight call in for Bowles' weekly interview on Mondays.

When host Michael Kay told Bowles that Knight was on the line, the coach said, "Yeah, right."

But then The Empress of Soul spoke, and Bowles realized Kay wasn't lying.

"Oh my god, how are you?" the coach said.

"Thank you so much for even calling, I really appreciate it," he added.

Knight came to Sunday's game, a loss to the Eagles, though she arrived late, she said. Knight said her husband told her that Bowles is a big fan of hers -- the coach has mentioned Knight quite a few times over the last several weeks.

Her husband wasn't jealous, however.

"No, he was very proud," Knight said. "He was very pleased. He really was. I mean, Coach Bowles."

"I'm a big Gladys music fan," Bowles said. “Believe me. I listen to you every day."

Kay asked Knight if Bowles could fill in as one of the Pips sometime.

"Absolutely," she said. "They be dancing on that field. He's gonna have to dance for me."

"I can do that," Bowles said.

In Jets' loss, Todd Bowles sounds accountability mantra (Kristian Dyer) September 28, 2015 Metro New York

http://www.metro.us/sports/dyer-in-jets-loss-todd-bowles-sounds-accountability-mantra/zsJoiB---TFlL3caQEApI/

That Todd Bowles toed the same line Sunday afternoon following his New York Jets' first loss of the season as he did after their 2-0 start says an awful lot about the head coach, especially in light of their last head coach - who didn't toe any lines, but apparently liked toes.

It says an awful lot about the direction of the franchise as it now faces its first bit of adversity on the field and how it will regroup following its first loss of the season.

This rebuilding project may not be quite as far along as the writing on the side of the bandwagon read last week, but that's okay. Frankly, it shouldn't be at this point. But what was shown in the moments after the Jets loss was a head coach who continued his long-term plan for turning around a franchise that has been in a downward spiral since midway through the 2011 season.

Following a loss like this one in Week 3, Bowles sounded the same words that he did after his Jets' two wins to start the season. He didn't circle the wagons, he wasn't doom and gloom. He didn't go off the cliff after the first loss of his time with the Jets. It was bad, it was ugly and in many ways it was reminiscent of last year.

That is, until Bowles stepped to the podium.

He laid it down in a way that hasn't been seen around here for the past six years. Under head coach Rex Ryan, there was a tendency to whitewash bad results, to blame the coaching staff and give undue credit to the opponent. It was all designed to pump up the players, treating them like children and their collective psyches like infants. It produced a locker room of mental midgets and a culture that lacked accountability.

"They beat us at our own game. "

Where Ryan got lost in hyperbole, Bowles stayed the course with his remarks. They were simple, they were cutting. They were on point.

During the week leading up to Sunday's loss, he preached one game at a time. His team was off to the franchise's best start since 2011 and he didn't want them to get caught up in all the hype. Following a loss where at one point before halftime they were down 24-0, Bowles didn't make excuses.

The Jets were sloppy against the Eagles, four turnovers on offense and just one created was atypical for a team that came into the game leading the league with a +8 turnover differential. He didn't pontificate with a grand vision for next week.

Instead, he layed forth a team that didn't show up, that didn't execute.

"He got beat."

Bowles held his team as well as himself to a higher level after Sunday's loss. One of Ryan's great faults during his six years with the Jets was to relent any pressure on players for mistakes. He handled every player with kid's gloves, refusing to call them out publicly. What came from this was a lack of accountability.

Proof of that came in four straight years without the playoffs, without a winning record. His players simply seemed unprepared but more than anything, they seemed to lack a backbone.

Enter Bowles, a head coach who through the highs of the first two weeks was unafraid to turn the ever-so-moderate praise he dished into criticism that was on point and not over the top. He balanced his remarks, not stinging but certainly not soft, so the message was sent to his locker room that the way the team lost on Sunday was unacceptable.

Page 27: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/..."It was an ugly game," added wide receiver Brandon Marshall. "It wasn't good." Sure wasn't, and it knocked the

Daily Clips Cont.

27 | P a g e

Brandon Marshall's attempted flip that led to a turnover was pinpointed by Bowles as one where "we both known he can't make that play." An interception by Ryan Fitzpatrick was called a "momentum changer." The previous head coach would have sung like Pollyanna about the virtues of those players.

Instead, Bowles demanded more and for good reason. The Jets should have been 3-0 since the Philadelphia Eagles not only came limping in but made plenty of mistakes themselves.

"We had our chances and we didn't take advantage of them."

It was a game that the Jets had multiple chances to win and simply didn't, the reason why is a riddle to perhaps everyone but Bowles. He came in preaching accountability and that didn't change on Sunday after the game. No words were minced, no one left off the hook and accountability was preached.

Now, it is up to Bowles to back up his words this week and right this ship, to not just talk the talk but actually walk it.
