SONG TEXTS
Proverbial BalladeText: Wendy CopeMusic: Colin Matthews
Fine words won’t turn the icing pink;A wild rose has no employees;Who boils his socks will make them shrink;Who catches cold is sure to sneeze;Who has two legs must wash two knees;Who breaks the egg will find the yolk;Who locks his door will need his keys – So say I and so say the folk.
You can’t shave with a tiddly-wink,Nor make red wine from garden peas,Nor show a blind-worm how to blink,Nor teach an old raccoon Chinese. The juiciest orange feels the squeeze;Who spends his portion will be broke;Who has no milk can make no cheese – So say I and so say the folk.
He makes no blot who has no ink,Nor gathers honey who keeps no bees. The ship that does not float will sink;Who’d travel far must cross the seas.Lone wolves are seldom seen in threes;A conker ne’er becomes an oak;Rome wasn’t built by chimpanzees – So say I and so say the folk.
Dear friends! If adages like theseShould seem banal or just a joke,Remember fish don’t grow on trees – So say I and so say the folk.So say I and so say the folk.So say I…
ProbablyText: Wendy CopeMusic: Colin Matthews
If I’m not sure, I can’t say yes.You need an answer by today.Probably. Unless. Unless.I’ve freaked from all the strain and stress They’ve come and carted me away.If I’m not sure, I can’t say yes.
5If I’m alive at this address, I’ll try to do it.I can say Probably. Unless. Unless.I’m down with flu or in some messSo dire that I can’t work or play
If I’m not sure I can’t say yes.If I’m not sure I can’t say yes.
I cannot guarantee success.I’ll blow it, forfeiting the pay. Probably. Unless. Unless. Probably. Unless. Unless.
I ask for help in my distress,Does someone hear me when I pray?If I’m not sure, I can’t say yes.If I’m not sure, I can’t say yes.Probably. Unless. Unless.Probably. Unless. Unless.Probably. Probably.
Pi (A Pie?)Text: Selma DimitrijevicMusic: Emily Howard
A.A pie? A pie? A pie? A pie?
For whom?For me? Yippee!
I’ll wait. It’s fine. Tea?I see, no tea. You’ll wait? For whom? For me?For me?For Tea? Me?Where’s the pie? No need to wait.We can have the pie. Right now!A few bananas and a layer of cream! But where’s the pie? No need to wait.We can have the pie. Right now! Then a lot of chocolate and a layer of cream! But where’s the pie? No need to wait. We can have the pie. Right now!A couple of biscuits and a layer of cream! But where’s the pie? No need to wait. We can have the pie. Right now!Jelly, jam and custard and a layer of cream! But where’s the pie? No need to wait. We can have the pie. Right now!Where’s the pie? Where’s the pie? Where’s the pie?
Where’s the Pie in the Sky?

John, Tom and JamesText: Charles Henry RossMusic: Charlotte Bray
1.John! John was a bad boy, and beat a poor cat;Tom! Tom put a stone in a blind man’s hat;James! James was the boy who neglected his prayers; They’ve all grown up ugly, and nobody cares.
2.The wisest old man that ever was knownIn the famous Wiseacre nation,Sat up all night, with his head in a sling,To make this calculation:
If Tom’s father was John’s son,But John’s son hadn’t a father,What would John’s son’s son have done,If Tom’s son’s father wouldn’t rather?
He worked all night and he worked all day,Till he came to this conclusion,That Tom’s son’s father’s father’s sonTom’s son’s father’s father’s son,Was the cause of much confusion.
Two Poems of John ClareText: John ClareMusic: David Matthews
Little Trotty WagtailLittle trotty wagtail, he went in the rain,And tittering, tottering sideways, he ne’er got straight again. He stooped to get a worm and looked up to catch a flyAnd then he flew away ere his feathers they
were dry.
Little trotty wagtail, he waddled in the mud,And left his little footmarks, trample where he would,He waddled in the water-pudge and waggle went his tailAnd chirrupt, chirrupt, chirrupt up his wings to
dry upon the garden rail.
Little trotty wagtail, you nimble all about,And in the dimpling water-pudge you waddle in and out,Your home is nigh at hand, and in the warm pigsty,So little Master Wagtail, I’ll bid you a ‘Good-bye’Good-bye, Good-bye, Good-bye.
Crows in SpringThe crow will tumble up and downAt the first sight of springAnd in old trees around the townBrush winter from its wing.
No longer flapping far awayTo naked fen they down flyeChill fare as on a winter's dayBut field and valleys nighWhere swains are stirring out to ploughAnd woods are just at handThey seek the upland's sunny browAnd strut from land to land
7And often flap their sooty wingsAnd sturt to neighbouring treeAnd seems to try all ways to singAnd almost speaks in glee
The ploughman hears and turns his headAbove to wonder whyAnd there a new nest nearly madeProclaims the winter by
The schoolboy, free from winter's frownThat rests on every stileIn wonder sets his basket downTo start this happy toil.
Under the Greenwood TreeText: William Shakespeare, from As You Like It
Music: John Barber
Under the greenwood treeWho loves, who loves to lie with me,And turn his merry noteUnto the sweet bird’s throat,Come hither, come hither,Come hither, come hither,Come hither:Here shall he see no enemy but winter and rough weather.Under the greenwood tree.
Who doth ambition shun,And loves and loves to feel the sunAnd seek the food he eats,So pleased with what he gets,Come hither, come hither,Come hither, come hither,Come hither:Here shall he see no enemy but winter and rough weather.Under the greenwood tree.Under the greenwood tree.
Who loves to lie with me,Under the treeUnder the greenwood treeWho loves to lie with meUnder the treeUnder the greenwood tree.
The Witches' SongText: William Shakespeare, from Macbeth
Music: John Barber
‘Tis time! ‘tis time!‘Tis time! ‘tis time!
Round about the cauldron go;In the poisoned entrails throw.Toad that under this cold stoneDay and nights has thirty-oneSweated venom sleeping got,Boil thou first in this charmed pot.
Double, double, toil and trouble;Fire burn and cauldron bubble.Double, double, toil and trouble;Fire burn and cauldron bubble, bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,In the cauldron boil and bake;Eye of newt and toe of frog,Wool of bat and tongue of dog,Adder’s fork and blindworm’s sting,Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing.
Double, double, toil and trouble;Fire burn and cauldron bubble.Double, double, toil and trouble;Fire burn and cauldron bubble, bubble.
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,Witches’ mummy maw and gulfOf the ravin’d salt-sea shark,Root of hemlock digg’d in the dark.
For this charm of powerful trouble,Like a hell-broth boil and bubble,Double, double, toil and trouble,Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Double, double, toil and trouble,Fire burn and cauldron bubble bubble,Toil and trouble, double double,Toil and trouble, double double,Bubble bubble, toil and trouble.
‘Tis time!
Two Ghostly SongsText: AnonMusic: Gordon Crosse
The Wandering SpectreWae’s me, wae’s me, the acorn’s not yet fallen from the treeThat’s to grow the wood that’s to make the cradle That’s to rock the bairn, that’s to grow the
man, that’s to lay me.

What's In There?A. B.What’s in there?
Gold and money.Where’s my share o’t?
The moosie's run away wi' it.Where’s the moosie?
In her hoosie.Where’s her hoosie?
In the wood, in the wood.Where’s the wood?
The fire brunt it.Where’s the fire?
The water quenched it.Where’s the water?
The broon bull drank it.Where’s the broon bull?
Back o' Burnie's Hill.Where’s Burnie’s hill?
A'claid wi' snaw.Where’s Burnie’s hill?
A'claid wi' snaw.Where’s the snaw?
The sun meltit it.Where’s the sun?
High, high, high, high High up, high up,High up, high up, high up, High up, high up, high up,In the sky. In the sky.In the sky. In the sky.In the sky. In the sky.
The Secret JoyText: Mary WebbMusic: Howard Skempton
Face to face with the sunflower,Cheek to cheek with the rose,We follow a secret highway,Hardly a traveller knows.
The gold that lies in the folded bloom,Is all our wealth,We eat of the heart of the forest,With innocent stealth. We know the ancient roads,In the leaf of a nettle,And bathe in the blue profound,Of a speedwell petal.(Of a speedwell petal.)

When I was approached by Opera North to compose children’s songs in response to Friday Afternoonsas part of Benjamin Britten’s centenary celebrations, I jumped at the chance to work with librettist Selma Dimitrijevic to create original text for the songs. The two songs have very different aims: Pi (a Pie?) directly relates to my interest in involving ideas from mathematics and science within musical settings. Selma and I asked ourselves the question “If you hear the word ‘pi(e)’ which springs to mind first? The thought of the never-ending number pi or the image of a delicious mouth-watering pie?”. As a result the song is divided into two parts: a part for number-people and a part for picture-people, for we think that number-people are as excited by numbers as picture-people are about images. And as for BIG BUMS, well, we both would have liked to have had the opportunity to sing/shout “BIG BUMS!” when we were at school.... I have dedicated the two songs to Eva Latham who directed Oxton St. Saviours’ Junior Choir when I was a member (a long time ago).

John, Tom and James are two songs written for acapella choir, which set words by Charles Henry Ross (1842-1897). The verses were written for publication in comic books in the late 19th Century. Witty and fun, they have great appeal to children and adults alike. Equally whimsical pictures were often publishedalongside the verses.

When I was asked to write two songs as sequels to Britten’s Friday Afternoons, I immediately thought of JohnClare’s Little Trotty Wagtail, one of the first poems I liked as a child. Clare was born in Helpstone, Northamptonshire, in 1793. He had minimal education and seemed destined to become an agricultural labourerlike his father, but from his childhood he was an avid reader and determined to be a poet. He was successful: his first book of poems was published in 1820 and he was soon something of a celebrity in London. But Clare wasmentally unstable, and spent the last 25 years of his life in an asylum in Northampton, where he wrote his mostfamous poem, the sonnet I am – yet what I am, none cares or knows, and where he died in 1864.
Most of his poems are celebrations of the natural world, of which he was as acute an observer as Wordsworth. A number of them are about birds. Little Trotty Wagtail, one of his last poems, written in the asylum, describes the characteristic movements of the Pied Wagtail very accurately and with great charm. As a companion, I choseCrows in Spring, a delightful evocation of spring coming to the village where Clare grew up. In my setting of this poem some of the performers play guiros to imitate the sound of cawing – with which everyone will be familiar as the Carrion Crow is one of our commonest birds.

I love the text of Under the Greenwood Tree. As a city-dweller that grew up in the countryside, it makes me think of home and also reminds me to try and not always take everything in life too seriously.
The Witches Song from Macbeth is such famous and brilliant text - I couldn’t resist the opportunity to write something fun, punchy and dramatic to go with it. Hopefully this song will give performers the chance to really get into a character!

When I got a request for two songs for the Friday Afternoons project I immediately went in search ofmy copy of Come Hither - that wonderful anthology made by Walter de la Mare in the 1920s. I feel sure that Britten had a copy since so many of his more unusual texts can be found in it. I found a shortriddle-like piece, Waes Me, that I have known since my own childhood, and as a companion an even stranger ghostly dialogue. Both poems seem to stem from the Borders and have strange scots spellings - I have set these in straightforward English. Pronounce everything with a north-country accent and all should be clear (e.g. "Wae's Me" is "Woe is me" pronounced "Ways me").
