6 NEW YORK BREEDER September 2011

The Saratoga meet is always packed with mem-orable events both on and off the track. For me,two “off-track” events will really stand out thisyear, and they took place on the same weekend.

I am referring first, of course, to the monumen-tally successful Fasig-Tipton New York-bred pre-ferred yearling sale that took place on August 13and 14. I’m sure you all joined me in celebratingthe outstanding results: 28.9% more horses offeredover the two days (183); 31.9% more horses sold(124), and total sales up a staggering 83%($6,725,500). The average price for a yearling in-creased 38.7% to $54,238 and the median price rose16.7% to $35,000. Even the buy-back rate, whichcast a slight shadow over the dramatic gains in thefirst session, righted itself by the end of the second session, show-ing a slightly improved final number (32.2%) over last year (33.8%).The numbers reflect what I also witnessed on the sales grounds:enormous excitement about the future of New York racing andbreeding, the return of old faces and arrival of new. By any mea-sure, we have the first concrete returns on New York’s video lot-tery terminals (VLTs) investment that will be coming at Aqueduct.

In its own way, just as memorable for me—and I believe forover 100 audience members consisting of breeders, owners, in-dustry officials, press, and the general public—was NYTB’s NewNew York Forum held at the sales pavilion on the morning be-fore the first session of the sale. For those of you who were un-able to attend, I would like to summarize some of the high points.

New York Racing Association President and Chief Executive Of-

ficer Charles Hayward, the first of five to take themicrophone, spoke to the high level of cooperationbetween NYRA and [racino operator] Genting dur-ing the construction of the Aqueduct racino, andtipped his hat to the horsemen for all the accom-modations that they have had to make over thewinter. Hayward reviewed the stats for state-bredraces run by NYRA in the last two years, noting adecline in the number of races this year, but an over-all increase in purses. After running 699 state-bredraces last year, NYRA will run around 600 this year, which is the number stipulated in their franchiseagreement. Hayward fully expects a rebound to theearlier high numbers of restricted races after the foalcrop recovers. He also pointed out in response to a

question, that the current NYRA franchise contract provides agood legal basis, should the state government try to change any-thing about the VLT splits, as has happened in other states.

In some ways, the highlight of the morning was the informa-tive and almost spellbinding slide presentation by Michael Speller, president of Resorts World New York. Speller did everything fromoutlining the basics about the Genting Group, the largest gam-ing operator in the world, to mapping out the Aqueduct racino, the first phase of which, the “Times Square Casino,” is sched-uled to open in October. The second phase, the “Fifth AvenueCasino” on the second floor, which is scheduled to open in De-cember, will include an exclusive club for high-end patrons toattract customers who currently go to casinos out of state.

Genting estimates thatthe racino, which he be-lieves is currently thebiggest job creation ini-tiative in the state, willsupply approximately$120-million in additionalannual support for theNew York racing andbreeding industries: $55-million in purses, $10-million to the Fund,$23-million for NYRA op-erating support, and $31-million for NYRA capitalsupport. After noting that“On [August 16] you willsee the first slot machinesroll onto the property,”Spelling said, “We arethrilled to be here in New York state. We are working almost aroundthe clock right now to get this done.”

Fasig-Tipton Marketing Director Terence Collier, who beganhis career with Fasig-Tipton as director of advertising and mar-keting in 1976, enunciated the most controversial views of themorning in a vigorous advocacy of breeding New York-breds pri-marily for success in open competition. Whether you agree ordisagree, I think it is important you should attend closely to thefollowing excerpts of what the marketing director of the salescompany that sells your yearlings had to say.

“We have to change the perception of New York-breds,” Col-lier said. “We have to make them competitive in open company. That’s always been the test of the Thoroughbred and always willbe. So as much as we applaud the closed program of restrictedracing for New York-breds, it will not be untilthey compete on thewidest platform againstthe widest group of com-petitors that they will earnthe respect I know theycan generate.

“As the purses for theNYRA program blossom, every top owner andtrainer in North Americawill want to run at Bel-mont Park, Aqueduct, and Saratoga.

“The challenge forevery breeder of a NewYork-bred is to producea Thoroughbred capableof competing in opencompany in one of themost competitive race cir-cuits in the world.

“We have all seen state-bred programs open, grow, and then,by most measures, fail. In my opinion, the reason for failure isclosed, restricted racing and protected programs for narrow self-interested groups.”

Collier believes everyone will succeed in the next five years, but “the challenge will be to maintain that growth over the next

decade. If the New Yorkprogram is to endure,we need more FunnyCides. Let’s keep theprogram as open as pos-sible. Let’s richly rewardquality. Let’s make NewYork-bred state pro-grams the envy of allothers.”

Rick Violette, presi-dent of the New YorkThoroughbred Horse-men’s Association, made a few observa-tions about the rapiditywith which the Gentingproject has progressed, not to mention praisingthe resiliency of thehorses through the pro-cess, many of whom

have now, in his opinion, been rendered “bomb-proof.”Violette also made the interesting—and I think valid—point

that ultimately the VLT delay may prove to be a blessing in dis-guise. “As long as this wait has been, the ten years of crisisand the sleepless nights, and wondering whether you’re goingto stay in New York or go elsewhere, we actually might end uplucky because Genting was certainly the right entity at the righttime with the financial wherewithal to go full speed ahead.”

The purpose of my own presentation was to contrast thegrim statistics of the recent past with the promise of the fu-ture. I first showed slides that spoke to the ravages on the NewYork breeding program over the past five or six years, withwhich you are all so familiar: A decline in the number of farmsin New York (-25%), number of mares participating in the pro-

gram (-37%), foal crop(-27%), jobs (-4,000),and stallion population(-57%). In the cycle ofdecline, pari-mutuelhandle has dropped, re-ducing Fund Revenuein turn to the tune of34%, leaving largerand larger proportionsof money owed inawards unpaid, andforcing a 50% reduc-tion in awards for sec-ond and third place.

Then I could turn tothe rosier, much rosierfuture. The accompa-nying slide is worth athousand words. Onthe basis of—in myopinion—a conserva-tive estimate of $350

win per machine rate, in 2014 the Fund can look for a 100% in-crease in revenue.

NYTB President Barry Ostrager concluded the program bythanking all the participants and hailing the unparalleled “truepartnership” of NYTB, NYRA, and NYTHA over the past severalyears.

NEW YORK BREEDER September 2011 9

In an unusual win-win conclusion to a NewYork Racing Association disagreement with stategovernment, NYRA and Governor Andrew M.Cuomo settled their differences over phone-bettingjobs with neither being forced to back down.

Cuomo announced on August 8 that a ChurchillDowns Inc. subsidiary, Churchill Downs Tech-nology Initiatives Co., would open a new callcenter in Amherst, near Buffalo, and would hire60 employees. Cuomo estimated the investmentat $750,000.

NYRA had angered the first-year governorwhen it contracted with Churchill Downs for call-center services for its NYRA Rewards phone-betting operation. Efforts to counteract the clo-

sure of New York City Off-Track BettingCorp. in December had resulted in asizable increase in phone-betting ac-tivity, and NYRA made the move to im-prove customer service.

The NYRA employees who had beenproviding the phone-betting services

were assigned, so no layoffs resulted. Cuomo, however, de-manded that the jobs remain in New York instead of Oregon, where Churchill’s call center is located. The governor got hiswish, and NYRA did not capitulate.

“I am pleased that we were able to bring thesejobs back to New York,” Cuomo said. “The pro-posal to move these jobs out of state should neverhave happened, and I want to thank NYRA and[Empire State Development] for their hard workin reaching this agreement and preserving theseNew York-based jobs.”

Empire State Development helped the ChurchillDowns subsidiary to identify the Amherst op-tion. No state incentives are involved.

“We were pleased to work with Empire StateDevelopment to help [Churchill Downs Tech-nology Initiatives] find a New York location forour telebet operations,” NYRA President CharlesHayward said.

John D. Sabini, chairman of the New York State Racing andWagering Board, said the agreement benefited all parties.

“This is a winning solution for taxpayers, the racing industry, and the countless dedicated workers who keep world-class rac-ing thriving in the Empire State,” Sabini said. “Gov. Cuomo’scommitment to putting New Yorkers back to work is exempli-fied with this result, and, as the regulatory body that overseesNYRA, it was paramount to the Racing and Wagering Board thatthese jobs remain in New York state. I applaud Gov. Cuomo,[Empire State Development], and NYRA for working together toreach this conclusion.”

A revised New York State Thor-oughbred Breeding and Devel-opment Fund budget will provide$820,000 in additional pursemoney to Finger Lakes racetrackand the New York Racing Asso-ciation tracks.

The additional purse contri-bution was approved on August4 and announced by fund Chair-man John D. Sabini and Execu-tive Director Tracy Egan.

By statute, Finger Lakes willreceive 60% of the money, or$492,000. NYRA’s share totals$328,000. The budget revisionresulted from increased revenues

from NYRA and lower than an-ticipated stallion and breederawards.

Established in 1973, the Thor-oughbred Breeding and Devel-opment Fund distributes morethan $40-million in incentives, breeder, stallion and ownerawards and purse money for NewYork-bred horses annually. Thefund is financed through a smallpercentage of total wagers onThoroughbred racing in New York. The fund also receives revenuefrom a small percentage of VLTrevenues at Finger Lakes and, be-ginning this fall, Aqueduct.

Dublin headedto Keane StudDublin, winner of the 2009 Three Chim-

neys Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga RaceCourse, has been retired and will standthe 2012 season at Keane Stud in Amenia.

Spendthrift Farm purchased the four-year-old Afleet Alex colt specifically to ex-pand into the New York market, which isexpected to grow considerably after rev-enue from the Aqueduct racino begins toflow into the industry this fall.

Spendthrift also will introduce its “Sharethe Upside” program with Dublin. Theprogram offers breeders the chance to breedtwo mares to a stallion, pay both stud fees, and then have a lifetime breeding right inthe stallion.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer NewYork breeders our Share the Upside pro-gram, and Dublin is a great first horse todo just that,” Spendthrift owner B. WayneHughes said.

Out of the Storm Bird mare Classy Mi-rage, Dublin was bred by Peter Blum andGerry Dilger. A $525,000 purchase byowners Robert Baker and William Mackat the 2008 Keeneland September yearlingsale, Dublin was trained throughout hiscareer by Racing Hall of Fame member D.Wayne Lukas and won the Hopeful by twolengths. He placed in three graded stakesat three before finishing seventh in theKentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands(G1) and a troubled fifth in the PreaknessStakes (G1).

“New York breeders should be very fa-miliar with Dublin,” said Ned Toffey, Spend-thrift’s general manager. “He was a dynamicGrade 1 winner in that state, as were bothhis sire, Afleet Alex, and dam, Classy Mi-rage. On top of his ability and pedigree,Dublin is also a must-see individual.”

Dublin will be available for inspectionby appointment.

Expectations of an extremely strongshowing at the Fasig-Tipton Saratogapreferred New York-bred yearlingsale were realized with authority dur-ing the two days of selling on Au-gust 13-14 in Saratoga Springs.

The expectations were high head-ing into the New York-bred sale, withvideo lottery terminals set to finallycome online later this fall at Aque-duct and large purse incentives ex-pected in the Empire State. Buyers responded enthusiastically, and Fasig-Tipton reported sales on 124 yearlings for a near-record$6,725,500 during the two sessions.

The sale’s average price was $54,238, a 38.7% increase fromthe $39,106 average at last year’s sale. Median price also rosesharply, from $30,000 in 2010 to $35,000 this year. The sale’s buy-back rate, which ran high early in both sessions, came down toan acceptable level of 32.2% when selling was complete amid alate evening rainstorm on August 14.

“It was a fantastic sale,” said Boyd T. Browning Jr., Fasig-Tipton

president. “We had great interest froma variety of buyers, from end-users topinhookers, to New York-based folks,to non-New York-based folks. It was avery encouraging sale, not only for 2011but for the New York-bred programgoing forward. ... Hopefully it’s the be-ginning of a very, very profitable timefor the New York-bred program.”

The sale was bolstered by signifi-cant interest in the opening of the

casino at Aqueduct, which is expected to pump significant moneyinto the Empire State’s purse accounts.

“This time a year ago, we had some uncertainty,” Browningsaid. “But thank goodness we’re now under 100 days before yousee some of the slots in operation [at Aqueduct]. I’d like to thinkthat the results of both sales give us confidence to continue tomake the main sale the premier yearling sale in the world andfor this sale to be a great place to sell New York-breds.”

Winter Quarter was one of the new consignors at the pre-ferred sale, and owner Don Robinson was richly rewarded forbringing yearlings to Saratoga for his New York clients.

Everett Dobson, bidding in the name of his Cheyenne Stablesthat co-owns recent Amsterdam Stakes (G2) winner Caleb’sPosse, secured the Dixie Union colt for $250,000 late in the open-ing session. Dobson, in the news recently as an investor in theThree Chimneys Stallion operation, made his fortune in thetelecommunications business and is a part owner of the Okla-homa City Thunder of the National Basketball Association.

“I liked his athleticism, I like Dixie Union, and he’s got a greatwalk and a great attitude,” Dobson said. “It certainly didn’t hurt[that the colt is a New York-bred]. I like to race in New York andI’m starting to develop a stable up here.

“I’ve been watching how he handled everything up here thelast few days and he checked all the boxes for me. What can Isay, I’m thrilled to be in New York.”

Robinson was equally thrilled in his first venture at the NewYork-bred sale.

“Needless to say I’ve been up here a lot through the years,”

said Robinson, a third-generation Kentuckian and former Ken-tucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club farm manager of theyear. “But I’ve been influenced by my clients. My clients race inNew York, they breed New York-breds, and they’re going to con-tinue to race in New York.

“The price was good and a bit more than I expected. That wasreally his best day. He was a nice horse. At Keeneland he’d prob-ably be a book two or book three type horse and he might getlost. Here he was able to stand out. You hope that you can dothat with a horse like him, but it doesn’t always work out thatway.”—Tom Law

16 NEW YORK BREEDER September 2011

New York Racing Association officials justifiably were pleasedwith the 2011 Belmont Park spring-summer race meeting. Asmuch as anything, the 55-date season (one day was lost to foulweather) proved that NYRA has survived the closure of NewYork City Off-Track Betting Corp.

Owners of New York-breds had several reasons to be pleasedwith the Belmont meet, which extended from April 29 throughJuly 17. As always, state-breds played a major role in the pre-mier East Coast meeting, filling almost one-quarter of the over-all racing program.

The native New Yorkers also beat many of the Belmont meet’sstatistical yardsticks, including average overnight purse and fieldsize. The New York-bred races were concentrated in the upperlevels of NYRA Director of Racing P. J. Campo’s condition bookand filled well.

Here are some of the key statistics for New York-breds fromthe spring-summer meet:

• Races restricted to New York-breds accounted for 123 of 526races, or 23.3% of the entire racing program.

• New York-breds raced for purses totaling $5.2-million, anaverage of $41,881 per race. The average was close to the me-dian New York-bred purse of $42,000.

• Belmont’s overnight purses for New York-bred races aver-aged $39,047, a significant premium over the meet’s averageovernight purse of $35,483. While the New York-bred average

purse of $41,881 was below the overall meet average of $48,985,the difference was due to stakes money paid out in open races, including the $1-million Belmont Stakes (G1).

• New York-bred races offered an average field size of 8.1horses per race, which was well above the overall average of 7.5starters per race.

Race conditionsThe healthy average purse for New York-bred races occurred

because the program is focused on non-claiming races, whichaccounted for 83.7% of restricted races and 92.5% of purses. No open claiming races were offered, and maiden claimers filledonly 20 races, or approximately one in six New York-bred racesat the meet.

Fifteen of those maiden-claiming races were for a $16,000 tagand carried an $18,000 purse; the five maiden claimers for a$35,000 price each had $23,000 purses. Overall, the maidenclaimers averaged $21,190.

Stakes races are the richest events on the New York-bred sched-ule, and those nine races averaged $77,778. Four of them car-ried $100,000 purses, and the remainder paid $60,000 each.

The Belmont meet contributed significantly to the number ofNew York-bred winners. In addition to the 20 maiden claimers, the Belmont program offered 40 maiden special weight races, orroughly one-third of all restricted races. Those maiden special

weight races paid an average purse of $42,650.Allowance races were the next largest category with 31 races,

or one in every four New York-bred contests. The allowanceraces offered an average purse of $43,368.

Other than stakes races, the highest purses were paid to op-tional allowance-claimers. Those 22 races had an average purseof $44,272.

Age and sexBelmont’s conditions for New York-breds make almost no dis-

tinction between three-year-olds and their elders. Three-year-olds, whether male or female, were expected to race against theirelders. In all, 117 races carried three-and-up conditions, leavingonly six races to other categories.

Of those 117 races, 64 were open and had an average purseof $39,725. The 53 races restricted to fillies and mares carriedan average purse of $40,924. In addition to offering a similarnumber of races, these three-and-up contests were highly sym-metrical. The open races averaged 7.1 furlongs, and the filly-and-mare editions averaged 7.0 furlongs. Both had average fieldsizes of 8.2 starters.

The only three-year-old races were two $100,000 stakes onJune 26, one for males (the Mike Lee Stakes, won by Preachinto-thedevil) and one for fillies (the Bouwerie Stakes, won by AvaK.) The Mike Lee had six starters, and the Bouwerie had five.

The Belmont meet offered no New York-bred stakes races fortwo-year-olds, but the four two-year-old races—two open racesand two for fillies—carried stakes-level money of $60,000 in eachmaiden special weight. The males averaged 8.5 starters, and thefillies averaged eight starters.

Field size and surfaceTo an extent, field size was inversely proportionate to purse

amounts. After one New York-bred starter allowance with sixstarters, stakes races had the smallest average fields, with 6.2starters per race. The next smallest fields were for the optionalallowance-claimers, which averaged 7.2 per race, well below theNew York-bred meet average of 8.1.

Picking up the slack were allowance races and maiden con-tests. The maiden special weight races averaged 8.9 starters, andallowance races had an average of 8.5 starters. The maidenclaimers attracted an average of eight starters per race.

Also helping the average field size was the weather, althoughbreeding-farm owners and other farmers were unlikely to cheer.Campo’s condition book offered a balance of dirt races (62) andturf contests (61).

Relatively dry conditions in the meet’s second half resulted inonly three races being moved from the turf to the main track. The last turf-to-dirt switch occurred on June 18, almost a monthbefore the meet closed on July 17.

As always, the turf races filled well, averaging 8.9 starters perrace, while the dirt races averaged 7.4 starters. The switched

races had an average of seven starters.Turf racing usually is associated with longer distances, but the

disparity between dirt and grass was not especially large at theBelmont spring-summer meet. The New York-bred dirt races av-eraged 6.7 furlongs, and grass contests averaged 7.3. The longestdistances were for the three switched races, at an average of 7.5furlongs.

Meet leadersThe 21⁄2-month meeting did not produce any three-time win-

ners in restricted New York-bred races, but 11 horses put togethertwo winning performances. Among them, seven collected bothmaiden special weight and allowance victories in New York-bredraces.

One of them, Flying Zee Stable’s Street Game, stepped up hisgame after the two May victories and won the Hill Prince Stakes(G3) on June 18. The three-year-old Street Cry (Ire) colt out ofThunder Achiever, by Thunder Puddles, was bred by NustarBreeding LLC. His Belmont purses in both open and restrictedraces totaled $110,400.

Also notable was Ava K., who won the $60,000 WanderingCloud Stakes before she took the Bouwerie. Bred and owned bySugar Maple Farm and H. Lewis Rapaport, the three-year-oldDixie Union filly out of Bedside Manner, by Dr. Blum, previouslyhad finished third in the open Wanda Stakes on May 8. Sheearned $102,000 during the Belmont meeting.

The meet’s leading stallion by New York-bred wins was Freud, the multiple New York champion sire who stands for Sequel Stal-lions at Keane Stud. The Storm Cat horse out of Mariah’s Storm,by Rahy, had seven individual winners of seven races.

Close behind Freud was City Zip, with six winners and sixwins. Third on the list was Sequel’s Hook and Ladder with fivewinners and the same number of wins. The Sequel stallion hadboth two-year-old filly winners, Bait and Hook It Up. AnotherSequel stallion, Read the Footnotes, was fourth with four winsby three individuals.

Three broodmare sires with strong New York connections tiedwith four wins by three individual starters. Longtime New Yorksires A. P Jet and Thunder Puddles were joined by Devil’s Bag,who was 1983 two-year-old male champion while trained inNew York by Racing Hall of Fame member Woody Stephens.

Giant Ryan took a giant step forward in his racing ca-reer when he won the Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) onCalder Race Course's Summit of Speed program on July9. It was the third 2011 stakes victory and fifth straightwin for the five-year-old Freud horse, who is owned byShivananda Parbhoo and trained by his father, BisnathParboo.

Giant Ryan's success this year serves as a reminderof the enduring influence of his fourth dam, ComelyNell, a nearly blind mare who has had a significantimpact on American breeding over three decades.

By Commodore M., Comely Nell was out of Nellie L.,a daughter of 1934 champion two-year-old filly NellieFlag and winner of the 1943 Kentucky Oaks and AcornStakes for Calumet Farm. Comely Nell was unable to racebecause of her limited vision and was sold privately asa yearling to Red Bull Stable in 1963. It was one of thebest purchases in the annals of American bloodstock.

Red Bull was the partnership of two Louisville busi-nessmen, Marvin Waldman and Sam Lyon, who ownedComely Nell in partnership with legendary bloodstockagent Lee Eaton's Eaton Farms. Marty Fallon, a respectedtrainer in Kentucky and later in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, recommended Eaton to Waldman and Lyon, and they began theiroperation in the early 1960s.

Comely Nell produced a remarkable family for the partner-ship. Undoubtedly, her most accomplished offspring was BoldForbes, the Irish Castle colt who won the 1976 Kentucky Derby(G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1). Bred by Red Bull and Eaton Farms,Bold Forbes subsequently was voted champion three-year-oldmale. At stud, Bold Forbes sired 29 stakes winners, includingten graded stakes winners.

Comely Nell's reputation also grew on the strength of her

daughters. See You At the Top, by Riva Ridge, was the dam ofLife At the Top, a multiple stakes winner for L. R. French Jr. andtrainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Red Bull, Eaton Farms, and the Seminole Syndicate bred theSeattle Slew filly, who won the 1986 Mother Goose Stakes (G1)and Ladies Handicap (G1). At stud, Life At the Top producedGroup 3 winner Elizabeth Bay, who was a graded stakes producerherself.

Life At the Top also was money in the bank. She sold for$800,000 at the Keeneland July selected yearling sale and wassold as a broodmare prospect in 1987 for $1.1-million at the Fasig-

Tipton Kentucky Night of the Stars mixedsale. The following November, she returnedto the Keeneland pavilion in foal to Mr.Prospector and was sold for $1.9-million.

Priceless FameComely Nell's daughter Priceless Fame,

a full sister to Bold Forbes, also was price-less at stud and in the sales ring. She wasa modest winner on the track and, like SeeYou At the Top, she was highly successfulwhen matched with Kentucky's top sires.

Priceless Fame's first foal, the *Grey DawnII colt Dunbeath, propelled her into the eliteranks. He won the 1982 William Hill Fu-turity (Eng-G1) and Royal Lodge Stakes(Eng-G2) to rank among the year's top ju-veniles. Although Dunbeath was unable tomaintain that form beyond his two-year-old year, he established Priceless Fame asa source of precocious, top-level runners. That reputation carried into the sales ringthe following year when Red Bull and EatonFarms sold Priceless Fame's Alydar colt,

subsequently named Saratoga Six, to Lukas for $2.2-million. Rac-ing for French and partners, the Alydar colt was brilliant andunbeaten until injury ended his career in late 1984. After hismaiden score at Hollywood Park, he won the Hollywood Juve-nile Championship Stakes (G2) before heading to Del Mar forvictories in the Balboa Stakes (G3) and Del Mar Futurity (G1).

Eaton and the Red Bull partners entered Priceless Fame in the1983 Keeneland November sale while she was carrying a fullsister to Saratoga Six, and she sold for $3.2-million to JeffryMorris, acting for Joseph O. Morrissey.

The Alydar filly, named Milliardaire, was a modest two-timewinner on the racetrack but, like many from Comely Nell's brood, she excelled in the sales ring and at stud. Morrissey entered herin the 1985 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings, andMike Rutherford bought her for $2.7-million.

Milliardaire produced one of 1994's top three-year-old fillies,Lakeway, winner of the Santa Anita Oaks (G1), Hollywood Oaks(G1), and Mother Goose. Lakeway produced stakes winner Sluice,by Seeking the Gold, and Sluice's daughter Mushka won theJuddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course.

Milliardaire was the only foal that Priceless Fame producedfor Morrissey, who sold the broodmare in foal to Seattle Slew atKeeneland's 1984 November sale for $6-million to Darley StudManagement.

Giant Ryan's familyBetween Dunbeath and Saratoga Six, Priceless Fame produced

the Best Turn filly Khwlah, who carried the family overseas. Of-fered by Red Bull and Eaton Farms at the 1982 Fasig-Tipton Sara-toga sale, the filly went for $550,000 to H. Thomson Jones, actingfor the Shadwell operation of Dubai's Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashidal Maktoum.

Khwlah was a modest runner who nonetheless picked upblack type with second-place finishes in the Premio Legnano(Ity-G2) and Preis der Stadt Baden-Baden. She producedKheyrah, a Dayjur filly who won three of six starts in lower-level competition.

Shadwell offered Kheyrah at Keeneland's 2002 January sale, and Lakland purchased her for $10,000, well beneath the saleaverage of $37,022. She proved to be a bargain for the New York-based operation, then owned by Becky Thomas and Lewis Lakin.

Kheyrah's first foal for the partnership, the Intidab colt Sen-tiero Rosso, sold for $22,000 at the following year's Ocala Breeders’Sales Co.’s January sale. He won four of 45 starts, placed in alisted two-year-old race in England, and earned $55,250.

Kheyrah was bred to first-year sire Freud in 2002, and the re-sult was Psychotic Reaction, a New York-bred gelding who earned$131,275 in 36 starts. The mare was bred back to Freud in 2005,producing Giant Ryan for Thomas and Lakland.

Sold for $14,000 as a weanling at the OBS October mixed sale,Giant Ryan failed to meet his reserve at the OBS March 2008sale of two-year-olds in training and was purchased by ShivanandaRacing for $27,000 at the 2008 OBS June sale of horses of racingage.

Giant Ryan won two of three starts late in the year at Aque-duct and then was winless at three and four. His five-year-oldseason has yielded five wins from seven starts, a graded victory, and a guaranteed spot in the $1.5-million Sentient Jet Breeders'Cup Sprint (G1) at Churchill Downs on November 5. BisnathParboo said Giant Ryan might start in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1)at Belmont Park as a prep race for the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

20 NEW YORK BREEDER September 2011

For Ibboyee and Icabad Crane, thedroughts were rather long, althoughthey had shot for the stars and bothhad picked up black type in theinterim.

Icabad Crane, the six-year-old JumpStart gelding owned by Earle I. Mack, had been away from the winner’s circlefor more than five months, since avictory in the $60,000 G’Day MateStakes for New York-breds on Febru-ary 17 at Aqueduct. Anstu Stables’Ibboyee had gone even longer sincehis score in the New York Derby onJuly 17, 2010, at Finger Lakes.

Both prominent multiple New York-bred stakes winnersfound the historic confines of Saratoga Race Course to be veryfriendly at the beginning of the 2011 meet, although both hadto work hard for narrow victories. Icabad Crane won the $75,000Evan Shipman Stakes by a nose on July 25, and Ibboyee gotup late to win the $77,000 John Morrissey Stakes by a neckon August 3.

Neither stakes winner had been inactive between their victories, and both had picked up some additional black type. After his G’Day Mate victory, Icabad Crane had finished thirdin the William Donald Schaefer Memorial Stakes (G3) at Pim-lico Race Course on the Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard. Itwas familiar territory for Icabad Crane, who had won the 2008Federico Tesio Stakes and finished third to Big Brown in thatyear’s Preakness.

After the Schaefer, Mack and trainer Graham Motion sentIcabad Crane into the Suburban Handicap (G2) on July 2 atBelmont Park, where he finished sixth behind winner Flat Out.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Ibboyee had finished a close thirdin the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2), beaten a half-length by win-ner Aikenite on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands(G1) undercard on May 7. At three last year, the Medallist coltfinished second in the Swale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park andthe Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.

Both Ibboyee and Icabad Crane certainly were due for

victories, and both found themselvesin tough company in their respectiveNew York-bred stakes races. Bothhad to make determined late runsto overtake game front-runners toearn their way to Saratoga’s win-ner’s circle.

Neither was favored in their re-turns to New York-bred stakes. Withthree horses scratched, Icabad Cranewent off as the 2.15-to-1 second bet-ting choice behind 1.55-to-1 Stormy’sMajesty in a field of five for the 11⁄8-mile Shipman. As expected, Well-spring Stables’ Stormy’s Majesty went

to the lead under Edgar Prado and led by four lengths after sixfurlongs while Icabad Crane raced near the back of the field.

Jockey Rajiv Maragh put Icabad Crane into gear on the finalturn, but they still trailed the front-runner by three lengths atthe furlong pole. Mack’s gelding gradually cut into the lead andgrabbed the advantage right before the finish line.

“I knew it was going to take a lot for my horse to catch up,”Maragh said. “[Stormy’s Majesty] had put quite a bit of separa-tion between myself and the field. But my horse ran as hard ashe could.”

Icabad Crane covered the distance in 1:51.42 on a sloppy, sealedtrack.

After the winner’s circle presentation, Mack conceded thatIcabad Crane’s misspelled name was a case of miscommunica-tion. He knows well the story of Ichabod Crane in WashingtonIrving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

“I went to school in Sleepy Hollow, so I know just where theheadless horseman rode,” he said.

Icabad Crane was bred by Gallagher’s Stud, as was his two-year-old half brother by Corinthian, who was purchased for$120,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. Mackhas named him Van Tassel—for the family Crane visited beforehis encounter with the headless horseman—and the colt is intraining at the Fair Hill Training Center with Motion.

The 61⁄2-furlong Morrissey pitted Pletcher against one of hisprincipal clients, Mike Repole. Be Bullish, owned by Repole andtrained by George Weaver, was favored at 1.30-to-1 over Ibboyeeat 1.35-to-1.

Be Bullish, who had been acquired for $75,000 by the claimsbox in his previous start, pressed the pace of Mineswept, tookthe lead at the top of the stretch, and opened a 11⁄2-lengthadvantage at the furlong pole.

Ibboyee, ridden by John Velazquez, was fourth at that markerbut slashed into the five-length disadvantage to win by a neck.

“At the eighth pole, I thought I might not get there, but at thesixteenth pole I thought I could,” Velazquez said.

Pletcher said the outcome was his dream scenario for the Mor-rissey, and he had been kidding Repole about it in the weekpreceding the race. “I feel a little bit bad for him,” he said.

EXPLANATION OF INDEXES

Racing Index (RI)RI is based on the average earnings per start for all run-

ners in the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, France,Italy, Germany, Puerto Rico, and United Arab Emirates. RI isdetermined by calculating the average earnings per start, divided into males and females, of all starters in each indi-vidual country, and the average for each individual year isby definition 1.00. Median RI, however, is much lower. Ac-tual distribution of RI is detailed below.

Sire Index (SI)The Sire Index (SI) is an average of the Racing Index (RI)

of all foals by a sire that have started at least three times. For SI to be calculated, a sire must be represented by a min-imum of three crops and 25 starters lifetime.

AUCTION INFORMATIONAuction information is for North American sales from

1980 to the present and includes the following:• Subject horse (stakes winner): All auction activity—wean-

ling, yearling, two-year-olds in training, or horses of racingage sales—found after the winner’s name under the first dam.

• Sire of stakes winner: The sire’s lifetime and current yearyearling auction information is reported, with number of cropsoffered at yearling sales (lifetime), number of yearlings sold

(lifetime), and average price (lifetime, including yearlings soldin current year), followed by information for the current year.(Current year information is reported beginning October 1;current year information from January 1 through September30 is in the previous year’s auction information.)

• Dam of stakes winner: most recent sale, either as wean-ling, yearling, or two-year-old in training. Also reported ismost recent sale as broodmare (including covering sire) orbroodmare prospect, plus any sale of the dam while sub-ject horse was in utero (including covering sire).

PEDIGREE SYMBOLSSymbols preceding or following names of horses in pedi-

grees are used to identify horses that were imported intoNorth America for racing or breeding, and to indicate coun-try of birth. Equal signs preceding a horse’s name indicatethat a horse was foaled outside the U.S. or Canada andhas never been imported to North America; a horse’s coun-try of birth appears in parentheses following its name. Anasterisk preceding a horse’s name indicates the horse wasborn outside the U.S. or Canada and was imported to NorthAmerica prior to 1976 (no country codes are included forsuch horses). Names of horses imported since 1976 in-clude a country code in parentheses following their nameand are not preceded by equal signs. Horses that do nothave a symbol preceding their name or a country code fol-lowing their name were foaled in North America.

24 NEW YORK BREEDER September 2011

The accompanying list reports sires of New York-bred winners and winners by siresstanding in New York in 2011, three-year-olds and upward, of all recent races, exceptstraight claiming races. The second list reports sires of all New-York bred juvenile win-ners in the same time period.

The lists are presented alphabetically by sire, followed in parentheses by the num-ber of current-year starters in North America for the sire and the sire's total numberof individual winners in 2011, regardless of state where bred.

Following the sire information is the name of the winner’s dam. The name of the

winner is in light face capital letters (bold face capital letters if the win came in a stakesrace), followed by the winner's sex, age, name of racetrack, and date of race.

The class of the race in which the victory took place immediately follows. Abbrevi-ations used for class of race are similar to those used by Equibase: Alw—allowance;Hcp—overnight handicap; names of stakes races are spelled out, with the grade ofthe race, when applicable, in parentheses. Class of race is followed by the distanceof the race, expressed in furlongs and fractions of furlongs, followed by first-placemoney earned by the winner.
