Principal’s Message

Last week hundreds of principals and preschool directors came together to share the Department for Education’s strategic plan: “Achievement and growth for every child in every class in every school”. This is based on the best evidence from some of the most successful education systems from around the world. The plan is focused on Literacy and Numeracy improvement for South Australia. This will be reflected in the Site Improvement Plan, which will be published on the website, after going to Governing Council on the 18th March. In your student(s) work you will see this as:

A consistent reading program R-6: Guided Reading

with progress measured by Running Records or

Literacy Pro Lexiles.

Consistent programs and practices in Year 7-9

including Reciprocal Teaching strategies.

Emphasis on the Big Idea in Number concepts:

Trusting the Count; Place Value; Partitioning;

Multiplicative Thinking; Proportional Reasoning;

Generalization. In class this will look like warm ups,

regular testing of conceptual understanding and

problem solving.

Five weekly progress checks – you will be contacted

if there are concerns.

Focus on feedback – teacher to student, student to

teacher, student to student.

Focus on peer feedback staff to staff – the student

free day will focus on effective classroom

observations for teachers.

Yorketown Area School has made significant progress in the teaching and learning approaches and we are continuing to provide greater intellectual challenge for our students to become the confident, creative and collaborative learners we strive to develop.

Junior School

Beautiful Berry Bay Beach Day Bonanza

In week 5 the 5/6 class went to north Berry Bay for beach

day. The surf there was different than the southern end

where they usually go but that didn’t stop them from having

fun. For example, at the shore there was a deep gutter-like

channel the local rip would go through. The 5/6’s even

decided to make a poem about beach day using what had

learned in English.

Sensational Salty Swimming

The R-2 swimming day at Port Vincent on Tuesday 26th

February, was fantastic! Students enjoyed paddling on the

big boards, floating, using kick boards, rescuing each other

and having a ride on the fast boats. I was so pleased to see

every student joining in and giving things a go. There were

plenty of smiling faces throughout the day. Well done to all

involved.

Middle School

Port Vincent Aquatics Day, 4th March 2019

On the 4th March, the Year 9 class was taken to Port Vincent by Mr. Buckerfield and Ms Every. The bus we took left YAS at 9am and took half an hour to get there. During the day we all did a range of activities including; kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and knee-boarding. We were all separated into groups and had different instructors. The majority of the class enjoyed the day and was definitely better then school work.

Senior School

ICT: Year 10-12 students

In 2019 we are strongly encouraging senior students to bring in their own device. Senior students work in a number of spaces, often independently and it is difficult to have a “trolley” placed where it can be easily supervised. It is more practical for senior school students to have their own device. This way they always have their work with them and have a familiar desktop set up etc. Students bringing their own device have:

Access to the YAS network – they can back up save to their student files at school (which

have back up and disaster recovery).

YAS printing

Free Office 365

Students can book in with Sonya Mack to set devices up and get access codes to Office 365. We will advertise a date for students to bring in chargers for electrical testing. We recommend students have a lock for their locker to store their device in. Students without a device will be able to borrow a laptop from the library. Middle school students have laptop trolleys in their classrooms, however if students want to bring their own device they can once the Office 365 agreement has been returned.

Introducing student led conferences

This year at Yorketown Area School we are replacing the traditional parent teacher interview system, with what we call student lead conferences. Parent teacher interviews have a one-sided feel to them, and we hope to change this feeling. The aim of student lead conferences is to put the students in charge of their learning. Rather than focusing on the student’s behaviour, which tends to happen in parent teacher interviews, the focus is on the learning of the individual students. By having the student create a portfolio of their work and achievements in Pastoral Care, and then presenting this at the conference, it will help build a student’s confidence in their work, while also promoting communication between families.

The dates of these conferences are going to be published later this term and conferences will take around fifteen minutes. In previous years, parents have had short, quick conversations with different subject teachers. With student lead conferences, the conference will be held only with the home group teacher. This will allow the conference conversations to be led in a more positive direction, with a focus on achievements rather than behaviour. While promoting positive communication between families, conferences will also allow students to recognise the amount of work they do, which will in turn boost the student’s confidence.

A Murder of Crows!

In week 4, the school was visited by three Crows players, Josh Jenkins, Rory Laird and Myles Poholke.

We had the chance to ask the players questions and then we answered theirs. There were questions like “how many goals have you kicked?” and “who was the toughest team you ever faced?” but no questions like “do you play fortnite?”. After the questions we got their autographs and shot some baskets.

Library

The library will be closed Wednesday March 13th all day as staff will be attending professional development offsite. We hope this does not cause any inconvenience. Please see library staff between now and Wednesday if there is something you will need on that day.

Community

Great Southern Ark

The launch of the Great Southern Ark was on the 19th of February at the Warooka Town Hall. There were many representatives invited to the launch including community event representatives from Warooka Primary and Yorketown Area School, local council CEO Andrew Cameron, head of the World Wildlife Fund campaign, Adelaide Zoo representatives, Department of Environment and local land owners.

This launch has been in the works for 5 years which included planning and community consultation. They have secured funding for the fence which will keep out predators such as foxes. The next step is to secure funding for the release of animals. The types of animals that will be released into this area are Quolls and Bettongs, both of which are natural competitors for feral animals. Other various species of Rats and mammals will be released and some will help the soil gain nutrients which in turn will help the agriculture in that area. The fence is set to be built by June 2019 and the school has arranged for organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund and representatives from Zoo SA to come and visit the school and talk to students about this project to provide a further understanding.

Official Opening – Point Turton Natural Playspace Saturday 16 March

Please join us to celebrate the official opening of the Point Turton Natural Playspace and Bike Trail!! Explore and play on the new natural playspace with features such as a water pump and creek, sandplay kitchen, double slide with tunnel cave and rock scramble, sideways tree logs, climbing boulders, pendulum basket swing, embankment tunnel slide with rock and log scramble, swings, ship steering and more. Or tackle the bike trail designed to bring out the mountain biker in you with challenges including berms, switchbacks, log step ups, boulder roll-overs and optional lines. The Progress Association will have food and drinks for purchase plus there will be activities for children including face painting and nature craft.
