Looks like around 11 or 12weeks until the National NewZealand Show in Hamburg,New York. April 21 to beexact! I’m looking forward tothis one, as we weren’t able toattend the Texas Convention.I’ve made our roomreservation and lookingforward to receiving theNational Show Catalog. Oncethe catalog arrives it’s not toolong until show time! We havea few New Zealand Blacks setback to show. I get to stewand fret now and hope thatthe cold weather doesn’t frosttoo many of the young’s ears.Sometimes the cold hurts youas much as hot weather. Timewill tell!

Good luck to everyoneduring the upcoming showseason! Hope to see many ofyou in New York.

there is a petition for directorsand vice-president andpresident. What has changedthis year is that we can havemore that one director fromthe same state. This may helpus find people that areinterested in becomingdirectors running when theydid not run before.

Things are coming alonggood for the National in April.The catalog should be doneand mailed by late March.Everyone that showed at the2004 show will be sent acatalog and everyone that hasrequested one will also be sentone. Send requests to me.

The show season is slowhere in the East. Had a tripleshowing for New Zealands atthe PA State RBA show firstweek in February. Seems thatmany people are havingtrouble getting litters thiswinter. A lot of misses and alot of does not taking care ofthe litters after they are born.

I hope everyone has beengetting their reservations infor the Convention in GrandRapids. It should be a goodone.

I hope you are all having agood New Year so far. Thespring rabbit shows havestarted and even though thecalendar still shows winter, it isgood to think spring. Ournational show in Hamburg,N.Y. will be here before weknow it and I am hopingeveryone considers attendingthis show. The New York clubhas a lot of experience puttingon a national and always has anice show. It is a long way forus to drive but we will attemptthe trip and look forward toseeing everyone.

I want to bring attention tothe Federation electioncoming up this year. This willbe my last year as yourpresident since I have servedmy two terms. You will beelecting a new President, VicePresident and 6 directors.Please note that you can nowhave 2 directors elected fromthe same state. This changewas made in the specialelection last fall. Please checkyour guidebook for thepetition requirements listedfor running for office in yourFederation. This is a great cluband it would be in our club’sbest interest to see manynames on the ballot thissummer. The petition will beprinted in this Times, so startgetting those signatures.

The new and improvedguidebook will be out to youthis spring. All members willreceive a copy so make surethat your membership is up todate. Also check your ad datein the Times and make sureyou renew if needed. If youhave not put your ad in theTimes now is the time toconsider the benefit to yourrabbit hobby or business.

This will be the first issue ofthe Times with our new editor.Make sure that you get yourarticles in so we give Adam

something to work with. Allofficers and directors, pleasecheck out your addresses andtelephone numbers that areprinted in the Times and makesure those are correct. Ourmembers may have the needto contact someone in theirarea and it is frustrating to tryonly to find the listedinformation is incorrect.

the winter. It is really differentthis year. Snow and ice whereit normally doesn’t happen and50 degree temperatures in theareas that are usually freezingat this time of the year. Here inthe Northeast we are finallygetting winter. Some snow andtemperatures below 0 at nightwith a lot of wind. You will findin this issue of the Times that

Winter in the heartland! I’lltake that for the gospel! It’sFebruary 1st and they arecalling for a high of 22 degreestoday. I can live with that!February 4th is the first Ohiorabbit show of the season atLima, Ohio. They’re calling fora high of 10 degrees and near0 degrees at night for thatweekend. Not a good omen!The Lima Club had to canceltheir show for the last twoyears due to snow storms. Idon’t think the cold will hurtthem too much if the snowholds off. There are a lot ofpeople around the state thatanxious for a rabbit show!

Old man winter has finallycome down on us. After awarm January the month ofFebruary has been very coldand windy, bad for business,bad for just about everything!The harbors are all frozen andalmost impossible to get outof unless ice breakers from theCoast Guard come in to bustup the thick ice.

The shows around this partof the country have come to ahalt until March. The rabbitsare doing ok, as long as thewater is open 3-4 times a day. Ihave a lot of litters fortunately.At the end of February onwarm days, if I get a few, thedoes will breed, especially ifthey have sun on them in thefront part of the cage.

Hamburg will be herebefore you know if and I amsure there will be a bigturnout, Tim, Paul, Rick, Joe andthe boys will put on a real

good show, like the last time.I like to say something

about the price of grain.Around here we’re paying $13for Heinhold, $15 for Purinaand $14 for Manna Pro, Blueseal is around $9, I canremember when I was paying$4.50 for 100 lbs.

Rapids MI shows. So let us keephim and all our club membersin our prayers. All the NewZealand breeders at the Lima,Ohio show were glad to seeBill Gardhouse come down toshow with us. We had not seenhim in a while. George Raisorjudged New Zealands and did agreat job. Kristi Rodgers wonbest of breed with a white 6/8doe. The show was over early–about 1:30 p.m. because of thecold weather. The Ohio StateNew Zealand Rabbit Breedersspring show will be back inColumbus, Ohio this year. Weinvite everyone to come forboth days this May 5-6, 2007.The fall show will beNovember 10, 2007 in Urbana,Ohio.

winter so far for us, but I havebeen pretty lucky we areenough south that were notgetting a lot like everyone elsein Missouri.

I hope everyone has a lot ofbabies coming and making itthru the winter. Dad and I aredown to Rowbotham-Jennings,

Lora decided to get out forawhile. She is planning ongetting married in June.

Our Missouri StateConvention was cancel lastDecember due to weather, soit is on for March 10th & 11thand will still have the regularconvention in December again.

We have a few brokenscoming along now and can’twait to start showing them.

unfortunately, will be unable toattend. My wife, Sara, and I areexpecting our first child March23rd (although Sara is prayingKylie Jane Klindt will comesooner).

After a warmer thannormal December and January,February has been belownormal. This has made itdifficult to breed. After gettingquite a few litters inNovember and Decemberwe’ve had very little successsince then. Our white numbersare up, but our black and rednumbers are down. In fact,after raising 7 babies, our Bestof Breed Black doe from Texasdied suddenly.

Hopefully everyone canattend a few shows before theNational. Supporting localshows is a great way to getmore New Zealand rabbitbreeders. Good luck in NewYork!

your new director, as such Ithought I would let everyoneknow a little about myself forthose that don’t know me.

My name is Arnold Schmidt,I live in Union, IL with my wifeSue, we have been married for16 years. I have raised rabbitsmost of my life.

It started with 4-H and FFA,as life evolved and I got marriedand started a family I quit for atime. Then my daughter startedin 4-H and decided that shewanted more than just that, shewanted to show at shows. Wewent to Wayne Kaltenback inRockford, IL, because shewanted NZ Reds, he was theonly one around here that hadthem. I decided that since Iwould have to take her to theshows that I might just as wellshow also. Then my son alsowanted to show and he wantedNZ Blacks. The names of mychildren are Cindy, Bob, and ifyou add my name that is wherethe name ABC Rabbitry camefrom. We still use that nameeven though they no longershow. We now raise all threecolors of NZ, Siamese Satins,and Florida Whites. We alsohold the certificate of

development (for the 2nd time)for the blues and we also havebrokens. We are hoping thatthe blues will pass this time. Weplan to present in Louisville,which ironically is the placethat we ended last time.

I became a NZ member in1980 and am now a lifemember, as is my wife. Enoughabout me on to club business.

I have received severalanonymous letters withnominations for the Hall ofFame. These nominations willnot be able to be submitteddue to the fact that they donot meet the guidelines setforth in the guide book. Pleaseread these guidelines beforesubmitting your nominations.All nominations must beaccompanied by thenominator’s name. The nameof the nominee must beaccompanied by their meritsand accomplishments and whyyou feel that they deserve thisaward.

Individuals or clubs maynominate someone. Pleasefollow the guidelines so thatwe can get deserving membersinto the Hall of Fame and alsofor the Outstanding Memberawards.

If anyone would have anyquestions about this please donot hesitate to contact myselfor any of your directors. Wewould all be happy to help you.

I hope you all have nicelitters for the ARBAconvention, and older ones forNew York. As I am writing thisit is -10 with 10-20 mph so weare having wind chills of -30.Yesterday all our waters werefrozen. It is better today, gotthe heaters going. thermometer, today is a far cryfrom July 31, 101º then, -26ºtoday. Hello from the land ofextremes, 127 degrees. Lasttime I mentioned the amazingflexibility of the rabbit, and thisis another example of therabbit’s flexibility and those ofus who raise them. I think ofour cold, and then don’t feel sobad as Paul Grundtisch isprobably burrowing to hisrabbits in Buffalo–Good Luck.

The rabbits appear to bedoing good, have had a fewlitters this winter, severalcoming the end of the month.All of us will begin to gear upfor this fall. Will not be able tomake Hamburg. Wish all of yougood luck, will miss seeing Pauldoing his table dance, it didn’tcost a $1, just BOB, maybe thatshould be a new NZ tradition.

I was going through somepapers my mother had savedfrom the 60’s. Amazed of thechanges, Purina feed purchasedOct., 1961, $2.30 for 50 lbs,white fryers brought $0.23.Today feed is $12.00 for 50lbs., fryers are $0.90 lbs. Alsofound a results sheet from the

first convention I attended inSedalia, MO, 1963. There were226 NZW’s with Fibberwinning BOS, NZ Black 34,NZR 106. The three colorswere not combined for breedBOB. There were 31 breedsshown, Dutch 310, NZW 226,Cals 218, Satin 173,Champagnes 133, Checkers149, English 122, Martin 116, 3Lops, 10 Floridas, 105 Rex, therest of the breeds were under90. Far cry from today’sconventions, not only numbersbut the added breed andvarieties. My biggest memoryfrom that convention was the3-50 gal. barrels of dead rabbitsas a result of the unseasonablyhot conditions most exhibitorstraveled through, without airconditioning.

Sometimes it is good toremember the past and to seehow far and much life haschanged. Thanks to Rick Shipefor his years of Times editor,Good luck to Adam throughthis transition stage. Also ourprayers go out to those underthe weather and our sympathiesare extended Bob Berry’s familyas a result of his recent death.Until next time.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?We have had major

fundraising efforts over thepast several years to build thetreasury up to a level thatcould support the publicationof our guidebook. That hasbeen done, but where do wego from here?

There has been talk aboutthe declining membershipnumbers and how to stoopthat trend. Several suggestionshave been made, includingdonating a membership withrabbits that are sold, butwhere do we go from here?

Many of us have good ideasfor solving the problems thatthe Federation has and someare good at putting those ideasinto action. There are very fewpeople the have the skill to doboth successfully. TheLeadership of the Federationneeds to know where yourskills lie, are you an ideaperson, an implementer or justa worker? Any of you thatwant to get involved shouldcontact one of the Officers orDirectors and let them knowwhat your strengths are that

you are willing to use for thebetterment of the Federation.

There is much informationthat is contained within ourmembership, but if we don’tprovide it in a form that iseasily accessible it can’t helpthe average member. One suchexample would be theformation of Breeder listingsset up by regions or districtsthat contained all theinformation someone wouldneed to direct inquiries aboutwhere to find rabbits for sale.This would create a way tohelp ourselves by helpingothers.

One or two people cankeep an organization afloat fora fairly long period of time ifthey have strong enoughpersonalities. It takes manymembers of an organization,working toward a commongoal to create an atmosphereof growth. Let your Leadershipknow what that common goalshould be, so that we canknow where we go from here.

Greetings to all, I hope thisnewsletter finds you all well! Iwill start off by introducingmyself, I am Adam Benker, theminority shareholder, and Imean minority, of Benker’sRabbits. I grew up aroundanimals all my life but we didn’tstart raising rabbits until I was15. Rabbits have played anenormous role in my life as wellas my fathers, it was thecommon thread that held ourrelationship together thru somevery rocky times and now hasbecome a passion for both of usand it such an amazing hobby tobe able to be a part of. I havemet some incredible peoplethat I now consider closefriends and my dad and I enjoymany hours preparing for theshows, I hope someday mychildren will be able to sharethis with me as well.

I am married, and have threeawesome kids and I am luckyenough to stay at home withthem and have my owntaxidermy business. This hasallowed me the time tovolunteer as the editor. Weneed to make sure andacknowledge Rick for his manyyears of service as editor and allthe other positions he served, Iam sure to find out just howthankless a job it is! This firstnewsletter is very similar toones in the past but in theupcoming issues we will start tosee some changes, some youmay like, other you may not Ijust hope that you will sharefeed back with me, because inthe end this is your newsletterand is here to serve and informyou. It will only be as strong asyou make it and nothing I cando to change that.

This issue contains yourpetition for various positionsthat are open in ororganization, this is youropportunity to help. The club isat a turning point, we need toget you involved and help theclub grow so that the NewZealand’s can continue itsfantastic tradition as the breedin the lead!

A Message from the Editor...

Virtually all rabbitries areinfected with Pasteurellamultocida. Many rabbits carrythis organism in their nose evenwhen showing absolutely nosigns of nasal discharge. Theterm “pasteurellosis” covers amultitude of clinical conditionsall caused by P. multocida. By farthe most common manifestationof pasteurellosis is the conditioncalled snuffles. However,pasteurellosis is also evidencedby pneumonia, abscesses, weepyeyes, pyometra (uterineinfection), orchitis (testicularinfection), and wry neck.

SNUFFLESThere is no such thing as a

cold in rabbits. Mucopurulentnasal discharges (pus) thatmany people attribute to coldsare almost invariably caused byP. multocida in conjunction withanother bacterium calledBordetella bronchisepticum.This is not a transient conditionlike a cold, but one withpermanent adverse effects onthe animal. The preliminary signsof sneezing and discharge haveto be differentiated from dust ordrinking water in the nose.Usually if the sneezingcontinues, and especially if beginto feel a matting of the fur onthe inside of the front feet (arabbit uses its front feet towipe its nose), you can bequite confident that snuffles hasappeared in the rabbit herd.Snuffles are extremelycontagious. Each time a rabbitsneezes it contaminates thesurrounding area withthousands of bacteria. Peoplethemselves can spread thesebacteria on their hands andclothes (the chance ofrabbits contracting snufflesat a show or fair isextremely good unless youare very careful and takeprecautions). Rabbits can pass

it to each other by contact, andequipment and cage accessorieseasily transmit the organism. Theother forms of pasteurellosismentioned above generallybegin appearing after snufflesare noticed. Strict culling orisolation of rabbits with snuffleswill keep the problem fromgetting out of hand. Rabbits canbe treated for snuffles with anumber of antibiotics. Thistreatment at first may appear tohave been successful. Thesneezing stops as does thedischarge, but as soon as therabbit is stressed (often it isreproductive stress), itbreaks with the disease againand this time it is more difficultto treat. Vaccination for P.multocida has been tried manytimes by both researchers andrabbit growers, with littlesuccess. Vaccines have not beensuccessful because there aremany different strains of P.multocida, each of which wouldrequire its own vaccine. Inaddition, immunity has beenshown to last only a few weeks.By far the most importantfactor in controlling snuffles isprevention. Strict sanitation,good ventilation, and strictculling aid in preventing thedisease. Any rabbit displayingsigns of snuffles should beimmediately culled.

Ventilation is very importantin the control of snuffles, sinceboth humidity and ammonia areinvolved in transmission anddevelopment of this condition.Ammonia is produced by theaction of bacteria on the ureaexcreted in rabbit urine. Urea isproduced by rabbits and otheranimals from excess aminoacids. Thus a high dietary proteinlevel will increase the amount ofurea excreted, resulting inelevated levels of ammoniaproduced. High concentrationsof ammonia in the atmosphere

can have adverse effects on bothanimals and humans in therabbitry. People working inpoorly ventilated livestockfacilities may develop headachesand respiratory problems.Ammonia increases thesusceptibility of rabbits tosnuffles and pneumonia.Exposure to ammonia damagesthe sensitive tissues of the nasalpassages, allowing P. multocidato colonize the tissues.Problems from ammonia can beminimized by reducing theamount of the gas formed andby increasing its rate of removalfrom the building. Decreaseammonia production can beachieved by daily removal of thefeces and urine. High humidity isa stress which increasesrespiratory disease, so methodsof cleaning which minimize theuse of water might beadvantageous.

Proper building design canhelp to reduce ammonia andsnuffles problems. In temperate

areas, long, narrow buildingswith open sides for naturalventilation give the best results.

Our rabbit raffle for the 2007 convention will feature a pair of New Zealands from Manuel Hidalgo. Manuel has won BOB @ 6 ARBA conventions and Best of Group in 2001 and 2002. Raffle tickets will be
