Sea Lions Taking Larger Numbers Of Spring Chinook (45 Percent?) From Lower Columbia River http://www.cbbulletin.com/432587.aspx
*Carl Patrick has been selling tickets at Newberg Wilco Carl, Dave Conser and others have been selling tickets at the Newberg Wilco Tuesday and Saturdays. Have done pretty good with just about every day selling close to $100 or more.
*SANDY RIVER
SMELT Season
Open for smelt dipping Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 15, from 6 a.m. until noon.
Bank only fishing, restricted to dip nets, and bag limit is 10 pounds per person.
Anglers do not need a license to harvest smelt.
Note it is illegal to have any Smelt in your possession before or after the season. People have been picking them up off the bank along the Columbia, Cowlitz and Sandy and if caught ticketed.
Each dip-netter may retain 10 pounds of smelt (about ¼ of a five-gallon bucket) per day, with no more than one day’s limit in possession.

This is really going to cut our Spring Chinook run at an estimated 45%! Makes you wonder why McKenzie Fly Casters are suing the state to close a hatchery. Most of the wild Spring Chinook at being ate at the falls. That is where their focus should be. Sea Lions on the Willamette River at Willamette Falls have been taking around 40% maybe more of the run every year. More salmon and Steelhead are being eaten all through the Columbia and tributaries.
*Survey tallied 7,500 marine mammals in lower Columbia
From the latest Northwest Steelheaders E-Newsletter:
Join us April 11 for Salmon Quest, where teams of two anglers and
their guide compete for awards and the coveted winners' jackets! Fish
a full day with a professional guide or host and finish the day with a
silent auction and Awards Dinner at the Portland Airport Holiday Inn,
8439 NE Columbia Boulevard.
Salmon Quest is a way to enjoy a day of fishing and give back to the
resource at the same time. Proceeds from past Quests have been used
to purchase a freezer trailer to store hatchery salmon carcasses until
volunteers can distribute them into local rivers to provide nutrients for
fish and wildlife. Thanks, past Quest anglers!
Special thanks, too, to this year's Quest sponsors: Dick's Sporting
Goods, Cabela's, Fisherman's Marine & Outdoor, Yakutat Lodge,
ClackaCraft Drift Boats, D&G Bait, Inc., Toman's King Camp, Alten Sakai
& Company, Lamiglas, Plano, and Stevens Marine.
Don't miss out on the fun of Salmon Quest--register now!

Terry who owns Hess Creek Boat Works is offering NW Steelheader members a discount on
a Starting battery. Group 24 1,000 Marine Cranking Amps for $84.00 (normally $119.00)
with exchange of old battery. This is a High Quality Maintenance Free Battery.
Terry will also offer a 5% over cost on all other battery types such as Truck, car, RV and
more with exchange of old battery. He can order and in most cases have your battery
within a week. He said you would save roughly $30.00 compared to local stores.
If you want it installed for a fee he will clean the battery terminals and install your battery.
“Take a Soldier Fishing” Got a message asking for Newberg Steelheaders to participate in
this event.
*Doug said he would be at our March 10 meeting and give a short notice of this event.
Message I got:
Good morning,
I'm involve in the program Take a Soldier Fishing. I would like to present a opportunity for
some of the NW Steelheaders to be a part of the event this year May 16 at Hagg Lake.
I live in Newberg and would be happy to arrange a talk at your meeting March 10. We need
guys with boats willing to take veterans out for the day.
I think other Steelheader chapters have been involved in past years. I'm not sure if Newberg
was one of them but if not this is a fun day to give back to our vets.
Thanks,
Doug 971-264-4618
The website http://www.takeasoldierfishing.org/ is now available to accept boater and
volunteer registrations for the next Hagg Lake event on Saturday, May 16, 2015.

Let stand and wash off. It is

Don’t Eat Farmed Salmon: Have thought about this for sometime and found this
information the other day.
Farmed Salmon
Although fish sounds like one of the healthiest foods possible, farmed salmon is one you
should avoid. Unfortunately, more than 60 percent of the salmon consumed in the USA is
farm raised.
These fish are fed unnatural diets and are contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics,
pesticides, and other known carcinogens. They live in very crowded conditions which
results in these fish having 30 times the number of sea lice than wild salmon. (Doesn’t that
sound appetizing?) Farmed salmon are fed chemicals to make their meat that reddish pink
color that should occur naturally but doesn’t because of the diet of chicken litter that they
are fed.
Also, due to their diet, they have less of the healthy omega-3 that we think we are getting
when we consume fish. Studies have also shown that farmed salmon contain high levels of
PCB’s, mercury, and cancer causing dioxins. Avoid farmed salmon and buy it canned or
look for labels in your market that state the fish you are buying is wild salmon.
Item of Interest: Plunkers or any situation that requires watching or
knowing when there is a strike. Relax and sit back without watching your
pole every second.

First heard about
this gadget on
Outdoor GPS.
It connects to your pole
and sends alerts to your
cell phone. Can be
adjusted for wind and
other situations that move
the pole. Replace the bell
ringer when it is windy.
Lets you know when your
pole gets a strike.
App available for iPhone
and Android.
