Once again its a
privilege to repre-
sent the INBMA at
the Newport MusicFestival. Sit back
and enjoy the fea-
tured local bands
that represent the
cream of the Inland
Northwest crop. This
festival really strives to support and show-
case the great talent in the area. From what
Ive heard from Shook Twins, we are all in for
a treat. I have to admit I plan on being a Brian
Oberlin groupie. For those of you who dont
know Brian, you will experience the extent of
the musical possibilities of the mandolin - he
does it all, classical, bluegrass, jazz, you
name it.
Sit back in this gorgeous setting, pick a little,
grin a little, use the open mike, enter the band
scramble or just plain jam - lets kick it! With
the two stage setup the music never stops,
and the workshops look better than ever.
If you have a few minutes visit us at the
INBMA table. Your membership not only goes
to sponsor the two major festivals but the RuSearson scholarship fund and the Bluegrass
Showcase events featuring local talent the
third Saturday of the month, October through
May, 7pm at Trent Elementary on Pines in
Spokane Valley.
Dont forget the upcoming Ru Searson benefit
potluck and jam, October 12 th at the Eagles
lodge; we need volunteers, prizes and sup-
port for this great cause. Put it on your calen-
dar, and contact Sally, Dannie Lynn or Janice
to help. (www.spokanebluegrass.org)
Wed love to see you at the September board
meeting, second Sunday, 1 oclock at theRosauers on Sprague in Spokane Valley.
Were always looking for support, complaints,
or general verbal exchange.
Were looking for volunteers to man the table
at the Fall Folk Festival Nov 9-10, Spokane
Community College, 11 am to 10 pm, Satur-
day and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday. Lets get
some jams going at the table! Anyone inter-
ested in Bluegrass in the Schools let me
know, Im sending for a package from the
International Bluegrass Music Association.

The Newport Music Festival Associa-
tion is made up of folks just like you who
want to keep great musical events like this
festival alive. We are doing our best and
are grateful for others who also have this
vision and have partnered with us. We
also want to thank all the businesses and
individuals that have contributed through
sponsorships and donations to this event.
You can help too, just give us a call.
The Newport Music Festival fills a particu-
lar need in the community. By providing
workshops, and a band scramble, we en-
courage young and beginning musi-
cians. By hiring mostly local bands, we
provide an opportunity for bands to pro-
mote their unique acoustic sound. By pro-
viding quality entertainment at an afford-
able price, we provide the community with
an chance to get more familiar with Ameri-cana music and to enjoy a wonderful fam-
ily experience. We hope you enjoy the
festival and will return again next
year. We also hope that you will support
the festival by purchasing from the ven-
dors or volunteering. We are also looking
for someone to fill the position of Secre-
tary\vendor coordinator on our board of
directors.
The Newport Musical Festival
needs your help!! It is though the gener-
ous contributions of time and money from
our volunteers and sponsors that the Fes-
tival is able to bring you all of this fine mu-
sic each year. Would you like to be a
part of that? We need volunteers spon-
sors, and--yes--also leaders to make this
happen. If you want to contribute to keep
this great festival going, you can contact
any of our officers:

Thisyears open mic format will be the
same as last year; we will have a separate
stage just to the side of the main stage. It
will have its own compliment of mics and
when an act on the main stage is finished,
a group on the open mic stage can start
and play for the time it takes to set up thenext main stage act. Some of those slots
can be booked in advance.
Do you love a Band Scramble? Well so
do we. In a band scramble, musicians are
sorted according to the instrument they
play then randomly mixed to form a group.
They have only one hour to come up with
a creative name for their group and re-
hearse two songs to present to the audi-
ence. Any musician is welcome to join in
the fun and be part of this event. The
Band Scramble assignments are at 3:45
and starts at 6pm.
We are pleased to present Shook TwinsThe 2012 Newport Music Festival (NMF) was an
overwhelming success, and in our first year
since form taking over the festival. we saw at-
tendance and ticket sales increase (around
250%) to give us hope that we had made the
right choice by taking on such a large responsi-
bility.
Last year we had a fantastic line up of folks from
around the Northwest and beyond (Digger Davis
from Texas). All the groups were folks that were
a part of our network, friends, acquaintances or
somehow we knew them. That being said, allthe bands were top notch, and the open mic
stage was an added surprise that kept folks in
their seats to see what would happen next.
Well this year has been quite different. The word
is out that Newport has got a really cool festival
and we were contacted from bands and band's
agents from all over the world. But our best tip
came from our former and very much missed
secretary (taking time for family), Connie
Fletcher. She had seen a band in Republic and
sent us their agent's contact info.
I had a client in my studio when I opened the
email which I showed him. He immediately
pointed to the link for Shook Twins and said,
"I've seen those guys, they are amazing", which
perked my interest as he did not follow blue-
grass. It was already our intention to bring
younger touring music groups to this year's festi-
val to help draw other folks that might not nor-
mally come to the Festival. So I went to Shook
Twins site and looked at some videos. Their
self described "Quirky Folk" was an innovative
approach, blending acoustic instruments and
heavenly twin sister harmonies with a little tech-
nical savvy creating hypnotic, often humorous
tunes that left me wanting to see more.
After reading their bio I knew we had to have
this group. They are originally from Sandpoint,
ID and are often received there by packed ven-
ues of folks wed love to see at the festival. Now
they are based in Portland, OR and we are glad
to be a part of their homecoming.

Another group not familiar to most folks in the
bluegrass community but certainly well-known
is An Dochas, which is Gaelic for The
Hope. An Dochas captivates audiences of all
ages with their lively interpretation of traditional
Irish music. With a foundation of authentic in-
strumentation: Uileann pipes, bodhran, fiddle,
mandolin and guitar, the band blends new and
old, elegantly incorporating contemporary
sounds into their diverse repertoire. Moving
vocals, rife with loss, longing, energy, and ad-
venture are layered with familiar and original
melodies.

What is Bluegrass?
My response is that Bluegrass is music of the
people, by the people and for the people. The
Newport Music Festival was born in 2007 at the
fairgrounds in Cusick, WA and known as the
Pend Oreille Valley Bluegrass Festival. Jim
Crowley was the founder, organizer, financier
and chief troubleshooter /baby sitter. My wife
and I attended and I performed at the openmike. In 2008, my fledgling band, The After-
thoughts, made the band roster. This was the
first time Id ever been paid to perform.
In 2009, to save money and attract a larger
crowd, Jim moved the festival to Newport ,WA,
and changed the name to the Newport Music
Festival. In 2012, Mark Harding took charge,
and I was privileged to be the camp host. After
wearing out a pair of shoes and several shoe
horns trying to fit everyone into a large, treed
campground, I realized how successful this
festival has become.Back to the question, What is Bluegrass? When
you sit in on a jam and see a pro pickin in the
same circle as the amateurs, hear that the mu-
sic is a mixture of folk, blues, swing and other
types of Americana, and notice the freedom with
which Bluegrass musicians move from jam to
jam and band to band, youll know that this is
Bluegrass, and youre at a real Bluegrass
festival.
Drove into camp about an hour late
Mountain Standard Time
Planned to be there at least by eight
got there a quarter past nine
Parked my rig between two trees
And went off for a stroll
Didnt know it at the time
But the fun was about to roll.
Heard some kind of musical soundFloating on the breeze.
Had to find out what it was
So I started thru the trees
Turns out its a banjo playin
Something bout a blue moon.
Didnt know just what that meant
But Is about to find out soon.
Headed back towards my rig
And fell into a hole.
Started thinkin bout the after life
And worryin bout my soul.
The hole was filled with banjo pickersMostly out of tune.
Thought that I was gonna die
If help didnt come real soon.
Heard a thump and a twangy sound
In front of me--to my rear
Turns out its a guitar picker
With a Martin, and a beer.
He says you fellows lookin for a jam?
If so Im here to play
All we need I a dog house bass
And well be on our way.
Suddenly the hole got dark
And a dog house fell from the sky.
Landed right on top of me
With a big dog right behind
Next came a singer with a great big nose
Then a mando player dropped in
Followed by a dobro, a fiddle and a horn
And thats how the band scramble was born.

Pearl Snaps are a group of young talented mu-
sicians, eager to play for an audience. Their
sound is an acoustic throwback of jazz, swing,
Celtic, Texas, and old time fiddle music. On top
of playing for several charities each year, includ-ing Fantasy Flightand Starlight Foundation, you
can often find them "busking" to earn money to
travel to fiddle camps and contests. Don't let
their ages fool you; they have studied under
such artists as JayDean Ludiker, Dennis and
Kimber Ludiker, Andy Leftwich, Darol Anger,
and Brittany Haas. They have also opened for
great bands like Sammy Eubanks at the Knitting
Factory, Della Mae and Milk Drive and are
award winning and nationally ranked musicians;
small in size, but big in sound.
A genuine Honky Tonk band playing Classic
Country covers from favorites like Waylon
Jennings, George Jones, Nancy Sinatra and
much more. Johnny & The Moondogs, in-
jected with an infectious boot k ickin groove that
will keep you hopping all night. Featuring John
Miller, Jesse Roberson and Mark Harding.
Kevin Pace has put together his fabulous group"The Early Edition" and had been turning heads
at all the regular local venues. Kevin and the
boys put on quite the show last year and have
gone on and gotten noticed. Well things are a
little different this year and after coming to an
agreement with their agent, we are glad to get
this very busy regional favorite back again.
Kevin Pace & The Early Edition are the most
traditional bluegrass band I've seen aroundthese parts and they remind us that the festival
has its roots in bluegrass.

Another great find for the festival this year
is Pickled Okra from Seattle.
After seeing their raucous performance at the
Blue Moon in Seattle, we had to have them. This group is a special treat and a lesson in
porch settin, singin into a can, Old Time and
Bluegrass; in great outfits I might add.

The Panhandle Polecats have gone from being
just another cute family band to being the top
Dogs (er, Cats) in the thriving Inland Northwest
Bluegrass scene. The lightening picking, tight
vocals and infectious stage presence of thesefive siblings have won them a devoted following
throughout the region. Ive seen them play in
front of hundreds of people and picked with
them in the middle of the night at a festival jam
when no one was around, and either way its the
same fiery enthusiasm and extra-sensory con-
nection that fuels their playing and pushes them
just a little bit faster, further and deeper into a
song... (cmon, just one more song!)... I love
these guys! -Kevin Brown,
This lively four piece band plays a variety of
genres spanning bluegrass, swing, country, and
jazz. With mandolin, fiddle, guitar, bass, and
harmonizing vocals, you will be delightfully en-
tertained with spectacular improvisation, amaz-
ing vocals, and a welcoming stage presence.

If anyone was lucky enough to see Columbia in
the several years they played around the areayou will be glad to hear that BlueStreak fronted
by Doug Bond of Sandpoint is pretty much the
same band. He is joined by Terry Ludiker, Steve
Bauer, Bob Asbury and Dave Hackwith. These
impressive players are great every time I hear
them play together.
We are also fortunate that Jim Faddis is com-
ing back this year. So much good music has
been centered around this guy and he makes
everyone he talks to feel like family. To me it's
like a reunion to have him at Newport and withsome of our area's finest musicians.
With a soft drawl and a host of ace bluegrass
pickers and fiddlers from Eastern Washington,
Jim Faddis subtle songs ring with the truth of
honest living.

Since 2006, Brian Oberlin has been taking the
stage as a solo act to satisfy his passion for the
challenge that only a solo concert can offer. Onstage, Brian delves into the music that has in-
spired him over the last 15 years of performing.
While crooning an old Irvin Berlin or George
Gershwin song and swinging out the melody
and solos on his acoustic mandolin, he will
switch gears and blast out a plethora of fast-
paced lyrics to a western swing tune or play the
electric (slide or 5-string) mandolin with a Stevie
Wonder or Allman Brothers tune and then tran-
sition into a piano rag.
I've been bugging Dave McCrea about playing
the festival for 2 straight years with one of his
groups, and we talked at NMF board meetings
how much we missed seeing Brett and Janet
Dodd. Well we are lucky to get both wishes
granted in the reunion ofWide River including
Brad Keeler. Their desire to be play outside the(bluegrass) box is demonstrated in their unique
version of popular music and tasteful originals.
They are all multi-instrumentalists and they are
quite adept at switching things up and trading
instruments like hot potatoes.
We thank the Pend OreillePublic Utility Districtfor their donation to theNewport Music Festival
Wanigan's repertoire is always growing, featur-
ing a lot of original works in addition to blue-
grass and folk classics like Two Little Boys,
Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Blackberry
Blossom. They like to describe their sound as
"bluegrass, etc." due to their other stylistic influ-
ences that come peeking through every once inawhile (Folk, Celtic, Appalachian, Blues, etc.).
Some of our favorite people make up this fine
group, Heartbreak Pass. Bonnie Bliss, Stan
Hall and Singer Coats are the core. Another
"reunion" of sorts and with a great history.
Bonnie has been singing and playing music of a
variety of styles since school but for the past 10
years she has focused on bluegrass. Stan hasbeen playing guitar for over 40 years and has
been playing in regional bands for 4 years now
and contributes some great originals along with
his instrumental skills.
