“A COMMUNITY OF READERS” -- BELIN UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

Many of you have been traveling or have plans to travel during this last month of summer 2016. When I take a trip I always collect post cards. I send several bought post cards to friends and family. The remaining picture cards are placed in my travel journal. Along with photos these pictures capture in a small way experiences that enlightened me. Summer journeys no matter how far away or long are fun and refresh us. I am grateful for all those individuals who share their insights and expertise with me as I travel as well as those who through their service make my travel comfortable and fun! Christ’s footprints are everywhere! No matter what path we take; river we float on; or mountain we climb you will find his footsteps are visible if you look and believe.

Here are two books you might want to read that take us both far and near:

(Mission) Because He Lives: Faith, Hope and Love in Action by Catherine Ritch Guess

Ms. Guess takes her readers on a journey following the footsteps of a missionary couple. Catherine served as a Mission Volunteer in Cambodia. The story depicts the lives of two survivors of the most horrid genocide in the world’s history in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975-1979. Fleeing to a Thai refugee camp these survivors learned of Christianity. God opened doors for them to come to America; and then led them back to Cambodia to spread the Gospel in their native homeland.

(Spiritual Growth) Reluctant Pilgrim: A Moody, Somewhat Self-Indulgent Introvert’s Search for Spiritual Community

by Enuma Okoro A multicultural world traveler, the author sets out to search for a community where she can embrace both her turbulent love of God and her desires to visit museums in Paris over a Habitat Mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Enuma’s journey takes her to unlikely spaces where she discovers God. She also discovers God as she meets and interacts with girlfriends and other “church” community seekers along the way.

Belin United Methodist Women Board Meeting July 27, 2016

The UMW Board met in the Family Life Center at 1:30 PM. Attending: President Sue Walters, Treasurer Dottie Burnham, Secretary Jo Bendick, Frances Wilson Chairmen Sue Carreiro and Nancy Heintz, Miracle Seekers Circle chairman Iva Coker, resource chairman Diane Lewis, and newsletter chairman Betty Mar Little.

Sue Carreiro opened our meeting with Psalm 150 “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord” and reminded us that Christian living is an adventure with Christ.

Secretary’s Report Minutes were read and approved from the last months meeting.

Treasurer’s Report Dottie gave us each a copy.

Circle Reports Miracle Seekers Circle: Iva reported that she took paper goods and food items to Barbara Horton’s home

for her company for Don’s funeral. The Circle will finish the Bad Girls of the Bible study at their September meeting.

Frances Wilson Circle does not meet in July or August, but will continue their Bible study in September. Grace Circle: Peg reported the Circle has not met this month, but is pursuing a scholarship for the UMW

Summer Camp in SC.

Old Business We will continue to sell the shelf sitters and will have a table at the yard sale for them. We spent time discussing the next fund raiser of our UMW Yard Sale in August. Diane Lewis has done a great job with publicity in MI Happenings, Georgetown Times, South Strand News,

The Sun News, TV stations and the Belin newsletter. It was decided to have the coffee and doughnuts for sale again. Susan Malachefski will be in charge of getting volunteers to bring in a lunch for the workers each day and

pick up donuts for selling. Grace Circle will do the clean-up, and we can depend on Walter to send his truck for the left overs even

though he intends to retire

New Business The Board voted to give Charlie Puckett a gift card of $100 for his retirement. The next Book Discussion is October 13 at 4:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Betty Mar reminded us the deadline for the UMW News and Notes is the third week of each month. Saturday, October 1, is the yearly Cancer Walk in Murrells Inlet. This year’s State Conference will be held in Summerville. We will get more information at our next board

meeting.

President Sue Walters closed us with prayer and our benediction.

Closing: May the Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent one from another. Next meeting will be Wednesday August 24, 1:30 PM in the Family Life Center.

CIRCLE NOTES

FRANCES WILSON CIRCLE will meet on Monday, September 12. We will be discussing mission projects for the upcoming fall season and places we would like to have our current monies be donated. Our Bible study will be on Chapters 5 and 6, 21 Most Effective Prayers in the Bible, led by Susan Malachefski.

We look forward to seeing every one back after the long, hot summer with great ideas for the upcoming year.

Circle co-leaders: Sue Carreiro (843-357-3533) and Nancy Heintz (843-947-0873)

GRACE CIRCLE will meet on Monday, September 12 at 5:30 PM at Peg Otterberg's home to go over plans for the upcoming year. We’re meeting on the 12th due to Labor Day holiday.

Circle leader: Peg Otterberg (843-651-2688)

MIRACLE SEEKERS will meet on Tuesday, September 6, 6:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Many Circle members helped make the UMW Annual Yard Sale a success in August. A big “thank you” to all who participated.

Michelle, director of Mimi's House of Hope, has requested some toiletry items for the girls that are under her care. Suggested items are: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and soap, and any hotel items that you may have collected are useful. She is also asking for a special shampoo for head lice. So perhaps a monetary donation for this particular item would be most helpful. Please bring your donated items, as well as donations for the shampoo to the meeting. We will also discuss any other help we might be able to provide Mimi’s House. Let's start out the Fall with a good gathering and a time of getting reacquainted with each other.

Let’s keep our sister, Barbara Horton in our prayers.

Circle leader: Iva Coker (843-344-2003)

GOD’S WAY Day by Day

By Charles Stanley

UNLIMITED SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Psalm 18:35 - your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. When you think of your potential, don’t limit yourself to thinking of ways in which you might expand your personal resume to include more and greater accomplishments. Think in terms of spiritual depth. God has planned unlimited growth for you in your inner person. He has boundless love for you and, therefore, a fullness of relationship with Him that only a few will experience - not because God desires to limit His availability, presence, or power to only a few, but because only a few will commit themselves to knowing God in more spiritually intimate ways.
