New Staff

Every year, we hire and add to our staff for the school year. This year, we have several new members to add to the staff! Many of them are freshmen and sophomores who we hope to keep for the next couple of years. Some of them are seniors, and we are glad to have them as a part of our staff for at least one more year. They come from various cities in Indiana, Michigan, and Illi-nois. Each one has their own unique experiences and talents that will definitely add to the experiences here at the center. We are looking forward to seeing them grow as leaders, and to see what new and exciting things they can add to After School Pro-

gram.

NEWS AROUND THE CORNER Page 2

Loss of a Student During September, one of our children, Shelly Nelson, passed away from an asthma attack at home. She was a beloved child here at the center who had a real passion for God and was constantly asking questions to get to know more. She really enjoyed singing during chapel and creating and dancing praise dances. She also loved being apart of our Drama Club and Against the Flow. For several years, she has gone with Emma Jean to the ISU Women’s Basket-ball games. Shelly was quiet and soft spoken at times, but could be a real leader when she needed to be. We will miss her passion and creativity here at the center. We ask for continued prayers for her family including her 3 siblings who still attend the center. We are glad to see that Shelly is no longer suffer-ing with her asthma and rejoice in knowing she has joined God. We also ask for continued prayers for our other kids who suffer from asthma. This loss has scared some of them, and we know that living with asthma can be difficult at times especially during warm weather. We hope that the memory of Shelly will

live on here at the center.

Financial Assistance As we head into the cold winter months and the holiday season, we worry about the future of the center and how we will be able to keep our kids warm and ensure Christmas will be special for each family. We could definitely use some assistance to make sure the costs of coats, presents, and rising bills are cov-ered. Every little bit can help make a difference in the lives of kids who have very little. We worry about heating the building and the rising cost of food as our numbers increase as we get closer to Christmas. We appreciate any contri-

butions during this time.

Appreciation We appreciate Danny Tanoos and the Steve Weatherford Foundation for their continued support. We were recently given tickets to an ISU Football game. We were able to give some of our kids an unique experience of watching a col-lege football game. The kids were very excited for this opportunity and enjoyed a Saturday with friends.. Thank Steve

Weatherford Foundation and Danny Tanoos for your continued support!

Food Pantry The Food Pantry is continuing to serve several hundreds of food requests each month. As we head into the holiday season, we know we are going to see even more as families begin to plan for the holiday meals. Each Tuesday, from 8 am to noon, the ramp of the pantry is lined with peo-ple waiting to receive assistance. The pantry is open for 3 hours each week, and people can re-ceive assistance once a month. It is great to be able to help such a growing need, but we can only do so much. Our shelves are consistently wiped clean each week. Our volunteers at the food pan-try do a wonderful job of assisting each individual and are faithful in returning each week. We ap-preciate our volunteers dedication and our do-nors who make each week possible. The new ramp that was installed this summer looks like it should endure the heavy flow of traffic from do-nations and lines as we head into the winter

months.

Each month, Against the Flow completes a service project to give back to the community. During the fall, they deco-rate a float for the homecoming parade and walk in the parade. They also make and take Christmas cards to nursing

homes in Terre Haute.

Pastor Bill Felts, Executive Director

It’s the time of year that we all begin making plans for the holidays. Most of us plan a big Thanksgiving meal, what gifts to give family and friends for Christmas, how to decorate, and where we’re spend-ing Christmas. The holidays are a wonderful time to get together with family and friends and share together,

thanking God for all He has done for us.

At 14th and Chestnut, we are also beginning to make holiday plans. Each year, we help the families of our children that regularly attend our program. More than 70 families are blessed with a Thanksgiving food bas-ket, Christmas food basket, and presents for the children. The holidays can be a very stressful, depressing time if you don’t know how you’re going to provide for your family. With your help, we are able to relieve some of

that stress and spread the joy and love of Jesus to the families of our children.

Attached is a list of the food items we are collecting for the food baskets. We ask you to prayerfully consider collecting the items for one basket, or collecting one or two items in bulk. There are also other ways to get involved, including sponsoring a family for Christmas, providing gifts for children, or giving a monetary do-nation to help with heating the building this winter. Without your help, we won’t be able to keep our doors open and provide a warm place for the kids to come after school this winter. Any donations are greatly appreci-

ated. Times are tough, but with your help, we trust that God will provide.

If you need any further information about how to get involved, please call us at (812)232-3126, and we

will be happy to talk to you. Thank you so much for the difference you are making in the lives of our children!

New Board Members Meet Tim Voll. Tim used to help the center out back when it first began. He volunteered with the computer lab and some activities with the kids. One year, his family directed a Christmas Pageant in the basement of the cen-ter with many of the kids. Since then, he joined the pastoral ministry and currently serve under appointment at Memorial UMC as Associate Pastor. He is also the Engineering Manager for Glas-Col. He has lived in Terre Haute most of his life with his wife, Donna,, and their daughter, Lydia, who is married to Derrick and has a son Logan. He is involved with the center because he experienced humanity at Christmas when he helped with the Christmas Pageant. He hopes to continue to the tradition the center has established and share Jesus with all the

people we can.

Meet Debbie Fell. She is married to David fell, who is a retired law enforcement officer. They have four dogs who are basically their children. She is an English teacher at Terre Haute North Vigo High School. In addistion to ten years of teaching, she has twenty years experience in Human Resources in various corporations. She is from Terre Haute, but she has lived most of her adult life in Indianapolis. She returned to Terre Haute five years ago.

She currently attends Christway Church and enjoys reading, walking, and swimming. She also has a real pas-sion for dogs. She joined the board after being ap-proached by her friend/fellow teacher Dave Utterback. She was immediately interested because she knew about

14th and Chestnut and strongly believes in its mission.

We are so happy to have both of these great additions

to our Board of Directors.

THE NEED IS THERE – BE A CHRISTMAS SPONSOR

BY: JEANIE EDINBURGH

14th & Chestnut Community Center is in its nineteenth year of services to inner-city chil-

dren in Terre Haute, Indiana. In an era of economic recession, decreased giving, and failing non-

profit organizations, the 14th & Chestnut Community Center remains faithful to its mission. Dur-

ing the nineteen years many young lives has been touched, fed, tutored, clothed, and improved by

the services and mentoring provided by the 14th & Chestnut Community Center.

For over a decade, the 14th & Chestnut Community Center has successfully relied upon

community foundations, businesses, churches, and individuals to assist us in sustaining this program

and to purchase food, school supplies, and tennis shoes for our after school and summer pro-

grams, clothing for our clothes closet, winter coats to make sure our children go to school warm.

We have also relied upon them for Thanksgiving and Christmas food for our holiday baskets, as

well as toys and new clothing for the children at Christmas

Now we are entering into our Holiday Season, and we are coming to you once again. So

many lives in our community depend on the services provided by the 14th & Chestnut Community

Center. I personally go into the homes of so many of our children, I see how they live, and I talk

to the parent about their basic needs. I am coming to you because without your help, many of our

children will go without a Christmas, as many have in the past. Each year 14th & Chestnut Com-

munity Center spends a great deal of time searching for businesses, churches, and even individuals

to sponsor one or more of our families for Christmas.

The families of the 14th & Chestnut Community Center consist of a family of three or

more. Without your love and support many may go without a Christmas this year. As a child

coming up, I was in one of these households, and it breaks my heart to see that so many of our

families live even worse than I did as a child. I would often hear adults say, “It takes a whole neigh-

borhood to raise a child”, in today’s economy I have to say, it no longer takes a neighborhood, in-

stead it takes the entire community to raise a child.

With the economy in the state it is currently in, so many parents have lost their jobs,

therefore the security of knowing that their basic needs are being taken care of are gone. Many

that donated to the center, now find themselves in the spot of needing help themselves. The 14th

& Chestnut Community Center is depending upon YOU to assist us in making sure our families

have a Happy Holiday Season. Please feel free to call me at the 14th & Chestnut Community Cen-

ter @ 812-232-3126, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, and give you the

names and information regarding a family, or families that need your

help. Please join us in bringing smiles to our families this Christmas

Holiday Season.
