Another fabulous Osher academic year is coming to its close, and a review is in order. There have been many new coursesoffered in 2015 - 2016 by veteran and new course leadersthat our members enjoyed. The Spring 2016 Term saw theinauguration of course leaders being able to preregister, andI'm sure this will remain a popular program. The entiremembership enjoys the fruits of the leaders' labor, and it's awonderful thank you to them.

Thank you also to the Osher Council Handbook Revision Project Manager, Carol Qualls, forher diligence and skill over the past eight months in shepherding the major handbook revisioncompleted in April. The handbook is a helpful tool for council members, and any member cancheck it out on the Resources page of our website: www.osher.rit.edu. Please do.

The Course Offerings Committee has agreed to remove the Friday afternoon time slot from theschedule because it was not a popular choice for course leaders, and SIGs need the slot as ameeting time.

New classroom and lounge computers have arrived, and Technology Committee members aregetting them ready for installation during the summer.

We have not yet heard from our new landlord, Morgan Management, regarding its plans for ouruse of their space. It is our understanding that they will be remodeling public spaces intoapartments beginning this summer. To our knowledge no changes will happen to our existingwing, but there will be changes to the dining room and the upstairs large meeting room. I will letyou know as soon as we hear anything.

As you know the Osher Council governs our organization, and our bylaws dictate that we keepour respective jobs for usually one- or two-year terms. Council members give me a great dealof help, and I want to thank Mary Jones (Vice chair of Marketing) and Lewis Neisner (Vice

Thanks also to these outgoingsub-committee chairs: Charmaine Babineau and Paula Lane (New Member Recruitment),Carol Qualls (News & Events), Nancy Geoca (Member Relations), Sandra Chamberlain(Social), and Bonnie Salem (Nominating). A big thank you to all for your help to me and yourservice to Osher.

Lastly, I hope each of you has a relaxing, rejuvenating summer engaging in pleasurableactivities: on the road, on/in the water, in the parks, on the golf course/tennis court, on bikerides, in the garden, at cookouts, at family reunions, in Osher summer classes, or just watchingthe world go by. Look for the next News & Events in September.

Laura Yellin, Vice Chair of Participation

When you joined Osher did you have a mentor to help you get started? How about doing thesame for other new members? We need members and a chair forthe Member Relations Committee. It's a wonderful way to meetour new members and assist them in sharing our wonderful, funorganization.

Speaking of our fun organization, our social events alwaysprovide entertainment and a sense of community. This is whatseparates us from other educational venues. The parties requireplanning and some creative thinking, but they are worth it.Consider chairing the Social Committee to have a say in ourevents.

Osher is a volunteer organization. We all have talents that can be called upon to make adifference. We have superb course leaders, technical wizards, and class schedulers, but wealso need other talents. Think about what you have to offer and jump in. You won't regret it, andwe will all appreciate it. Thank you.

Debbie Huff, One-Sessions Coordinator

As the spring term comes to a close, we still have twoclasses scheduled:

June 12Phil WeisbergAmerican Indian Voting Rights: First Come, Last Served American Indians got the right to vote with the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. That was fouryears after women were able to vote. Even with the Citizenship Act, many states did not allowIndians to vote. Phil, a former teacher on the Navajo Reservation, presented this topic at theSusan B. Anthony House.

For the Summer Term we have the following classes scheduled:

Tom Low and his hard working and indispensable to Osher; the Course Offerings Committee(COC) in the last year has presented a record breaking 152 courses. I have attended most oftheir meetings, mainly at 8:15am and know how hard the committee works and how well itfunctions. I'm very happy that next year Tom will be staying on as chair and I'll become aregular member of the COC.

Next I want to thank Gene Clifford and Willard Brown for the great work they each did asPfaudler committee chairs. I know from firsthand experience that it's not easy to find 30interesting speakers every year. This year they have included Ward Stare, Bob Duffy, FranWeisberg, and Jonathan Binstock among others. For most Pfaudlers, rooms 3 and 4 have beenstanding room only. I also want to thank the many Osher members who provided Gene andWillard with suggestions for speakers.

Jeanette Van Wormer has done an outstanding job in putting together great Intersession tripsfor Osher members. A lot of hard work goes into planning and implementing them. In the lastyear she's put together successful trips to the George Eastman Museum, and Monroe CountyCrime Lab. I also want to thank Terri Hurley, the Intersession chair two years ago whoarranged trips to the Albert Paley Studio, Foodlink, and Artisan Works.

Next, my thanks to the Technology Committee, co-chaired by Julian Thomas and BridgetScott and previously chaired by Joel Elias. This committee is responsible for making sureOsher has all the right hardware, software, and supporting equipment, and there is a lot of it.When we return for the fall term, thanks to the committee, all five classrooms and the fireplaceroom (lounge) will be equipped with new state-of-the-art computers for our course leaders andOsher members to enjoy. Better start learning Windows 10.

My thanks to Andy Bazar and all his almost 100 Wizards. Andy probably spends as much timeat Osher as anyone. The Wizards perform an invaluable job of helping course leaders makesure their classes run smoothly.

I would encourage Osher members to pass on to any COC member suggestions you have forfuture courses and I especially encourage course leaders to continue to lead courses and thoseof you who have never led a course, to consider leading one.

I'm very glad to know the various above subcommittees will be in very good hands the next twoyears under the capable leadership of David Hill.

To Nita Genova and Mary Barrett, the two Osher Chairs I worked under, my sincerestappreciation for all their encouragement and support.

And my thanks to Mary, Sara, and Julie, who were always there when I needed them.

Do you see familiar faces in both the classmembers and know your favorite course leaders? This happens quite often after actively takingcourses fora few years at Osher. I really enjoy bothbeing greeted and greeting others by name. Iadmit I have always been bad at recalling namesand love the assist of consistently worn nametags. Making some friendships which have carriedoutside of Osher has been a delightful andunanticipated bonus to Osher membership forme. Keeping the brain active after retirement hasalways been a conscious health goal, which has

been reinforced by lots of current articles and especially by Alex Marcus' Understanding theHuman Brain classes. Trust me; "I will not go quietly" resonates deep in my brain. Trying to agewith grace is hard enough without staying silent: I would not be a good martyr.

Refreshing my memory of concepts, historic names and scientific nomenclature, music, art,and maps which I learned in high school and college is fun, and has had lots of "Wow has thatchanged!", "I remember that, vaguely", and "Aha" moments, mostly silently exclaimed in mymind. Rediscovery of time faded interests has been rewarding. New areas of discovery arefantastic rewards for maintaining my Osher membership.

After taking classes in familiar areas of interest to you, trytaking at least one class per term in a new direction. You canmeet even more great people and different course leaders.Your brain will be obliged to make new neural connections(and think new stuff!). Best of all, you will have even moreareas of stimulating conversation with which to amazefriends and family. My adult offspring continue to besurprised that I've been reading on X topic, or share a link toa TED, TEDx, or YouTube video from a great Osher class.

KUDOS to all the Osher volunteers whose huge efforts make this Osher vital, stimulating, friendly, and enjoyable part of retirement. Thank you to all the members who introducethemselves with a smile and hello.

Thanks to our responsive staff who work for you and yet remain patient with interruptions andrequests...and all with a smile!

As I wind up a rewarding two years as Osher's Vice Chair of Marketing, I will just take amoment to reflect on some of the people and projects that have been important to me and tothe organization. In terms of projects, we created and aired Osher's first TV ad, expanded ourprint advertising via 55 Plus, and designed a new website! We also had a chance to reach outto the community through senior fairs, an interview by our Chair, Mary Barrett, on WHAMradio, and new banner ads on radio websites.

And the people - well, they are too numerous to mention, but let me highlight a few of thosemembers who made a difference in the last two years:

All of you, for referring friends and participating in our recruiting previews and membershipdrives. Especially Lewis Neisner, our contest winner.

Sharon Griffiths and Marie Levin, Media/Communications chairs for year one and year two ofmy tenure, respectively. Your energy and efforts really got our name in front of the public. Weare fortunate that Marie will be serving for an additional year!

Mona Miller and Maureen Murphy, Speakers' Bureau chairs, again year one and year two. Thanks for coordinating our community outreach efforts through our awesome Osher speakers!Maureen actually "hired" one of our speakers for a big meeting of an organization she belongsto, reminding us that we can all utilize Osher speakers in our other lives! We are lucky to haveMaureen staying on next year.

For two years, Charmaine Babineau has served as our New Member Recruitment Chair, assisted this past year by Paula Lane. These are the folks who follow up with our prospectsand preview attendees. They are there to answer any and all questions that potential Oshermembers might have. They work largely behind the scenes, but their work is key to Osher'ssuccess. Thanks to you both for serving.

And to Carol Qualls, our former News and Events editor, thank you for your efforts on behalf ofOsher. We will miss you.

I have to thank members of the website design team: Nita Genova, Mary Bistrovich, andJulie Magnuson. Through countless meetings, we persevered and the result is great!

Thanks to Sara Connor, for patiently explaining accounting spread sheets to me. She knows Istill don't get it!

Lastly, thank you to the two Chairs I served under, Nita Genova and Mary Barrett - yoursupport was invaluable.

I generally don't share links but this one about water safety andelectrical shocks was something I have never heard about as thisarticle describes it. The dock AC electrical outlets in this scenarioapparently did not have "ground fault circuit-interrupter" receptaclesinstalled which would have tripped out the AC power had such anelectrical failure occurred. Those kinds of outlets have the trip andresent buttons on them which you generally find on your outdoorreceptacles, kitchen, or bathroom around the sink or shower/tub.

GFCI or "ground fault circuit-interrupter" outlets compare the current flow in the hot and neutralwires and disconnect the circuit if it exceeds a very low current value. If a significant portion ofthe current flows in the ground lead, due to going through the water or other conductors, theGFCI should open the circuit.

When using extension cords outdoors and especially when on ladders using power toolspowered from 120 volt AC receptacles, it is highly advisable to make sure you are using a GFCIoutlet or an extension cord with a GFCI adaptor and make sure that it trips when you hit the testor trip button and have to reset it to power up your device.

Sharon Garelick, Summer Seminar Chair

At the present moment, all the trips are filled but thereare very few on the wait lists. You may still be able togo on a trip of your choice. For availability, please
