On Friday, June 24, more than 200 third year medical students

in San Antonio and Harlingen received instruction in library

resources that support clinical decision making. As a way of

sharpening their information-seeking skills, they worked

through a series of case-based scenarios. Before beginning their

3rd year clinical rotations, the students must complete the

Information Mastery class, a part of their Clinical Foundations

    course.

Information Mastery was presented by a team of instructors inSan Antonio which included: Glen Medellin, M.D., Associate

Professor and Director of Medical Student Education in the

Department of Pediatrics; Eric Willman, Systems Librarian; and

Angela Myatt, Curriculum Liaison Librarian. Kathy Carter,

Ramirez Library Librarian, presented the class in Harlingen.

The growing collection of mobile websites that are available to assist students in clinical decision making is

just one of many important components that were highlighted.

medical students at the beginning of clerkship rotations

    Twenty MS3s completed the Information

Mastery class at the Ramirez Library in

    Harlingen.

Report documents growth in open access journals

A recent issue of PLoS ONE (http://www.plosone.org) includes

an article summarizing the growth in open access (OA) journals.

Since the early 1990s the number of OA journals has grown

significantly, with more than 6,000 titles now included in the

Directory of Open Access Journals (http://www.doaj.org). These

journals rely on fees paid by authors and other sources of revenue

in place of subscription fees. The article reports that the number of OA journals has increased by 18%

annually since 1993, while the overall number of journal titles has increased 3.5% annually in the same time

period. The article is available from PLoS ONEs website:

Laakso M, Welling P, Bukvova H, Nyman L, Bjrk B-C, et al. 2011 The Development of Open Access Journal

    Publishing from 1993 to 2009. PLoS ONE 6(6): e20961. http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/

    journal.pone.0020961

Since January 2008 NIH has required that any report of research sponsored by NIH be available from

PubMed Central (http://www.pubmedcentral.gov) within 12 months of its publication in a journal. For more

information about the NIH public access policy, visit http://publicaccess.nih.gov/ .

Journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals are included in the librarys E -Journal list and

individual articles can be retrieved by using the Find at UTHSCSA button in many databases.

    Website redesign: Refworks 2.0

Just a reminder that in July, RefWorks 2.0 will become the default

interface for UT Health Science Center RefWorks users. The classic version

will still be available, and all references stored in current accounts will be

accessible through the new interface, so current users will not lose any

    information.

RefWorks users who are comfortable with the current classic version

should have little trouble adapting to the new clean version, which makes

use of icons, tabs, and a Quick List for easy navigation. Tasks such as editing references by browsing your

computer and adding attachments like links to PDF articles or a JPG are even easier than before. New

features such as citation information have been added as well.

If you have questions about the new RefWorks interface, contact the library Information Desk at 7-2450 or

via email to [email protected] .

John Weed, Head of Collection Resources in the Briscoe Library, has been

selected to serve on a newly-created Joint Library Storage Facility Policy and

Procedure Task Force. The task force is charged with developing operating

guidelines for a planned one million-volume library storage facility, which will

be built on the Texas A&M Riverside campus in College Station.

The storage facility is a project of University of Texas System and Texas A&M

    University.

UT System and Texas A&M libraries will be able to store books and journals in

this facility using the Resource in Common principle: If one library deposits a

book or journal volume in the storage facility, other libraries will be able to

discard the book or journal if they hold it in their collection, yet still claim

ownership of the book or volume.

John Weed will serve on library storage facility task force

The Medical Library Association held its annual meeting onMay 13-18 in Minneapolis. Two UT Health Science Center

librarians, Jonquil Feldman, Director of Briscoe Library

Services, and Keith Cogdill, Ph.D., Director of South Texas

Regional Information Services, attended the meeting.

Jonquil Feldman served on a panel discussing resources for

managing scholarly publications. She spoke on SciVal

Experts, a resource that identifies campus expertise and

enables collaboration. She also judged research papers for the Research Awards Committee and completed a

term on the Awards and Scholarship Committee, where she participated on the Jury for the David A. Kronick

Traveling Fellowship. The Kronick Fellowship is named for David A. Kronick, Ph.D. , the Briscoe Librarysfirst director.

Keith Cogdill, a 2010 recipient of the Kronick award, made a presentation on his study of libraries at four new

medical schools which he visited in connection with the award. He also presented a paper on the Frontera

Collaboration of health sciences libraries along the US-Mexico border, and participated in events related to

his fellowship this year in a leadership program organized by the Association of Academic Health Sciences

Libraries (AAHSL) with sponsorship from the National Library of Medicine.

Throughout the last six months, librarians ChrisGaspard, M.S.L.S, Angela Myatt, M.Sc., and Katie

Prentice, M.S.I.S., AHIP participated in the UT

System Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Education

Program provided through the Center for Patient

Safety & Health Policy at the UT Health Science

    Center San Antonio.

The purpose of the course, which is one of several

programs run by the Center for Patient Safety and

    Health Policy, http://www.uthscsa.edu/cpshp/

index.asp, is to provide physicians, other clinicians

and administrators the skills and knowledge required

    to lead breakthrough change initiatives.

For their course project Utilization of Evidence-Based Practice Resources by Junior Nursing Students, the

librarians partnered with M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm, Ph.D., R.N. of the UT Health Science Center School of

Nursing to develop and conduct a quality improvement project. The project aim was to study and increase the

self-reported use of evidence-based practice resources by junior nursing students during the spring 2011

semester. At the conclusion of the project in May, results were presented to nursing faculty at the Committee

on Undergraduate Studies and also to a group of UT Health Science Center librarians.

and Angela Myatt show their certificates after

    completing the CS&E Course.

Clinical Safety and Effectiveness: Librarians complete course

After a rich history of service to the UT Health Science Center and to University Health System (UHS), the UT

Health Science Center Library-Downtown will close on July 28. The library began as the Robert B. Green

Hospital Library and continued its presence when the hospital became the Brady Green Clinic and then the

University Health Center-Downtown. The library has always focused on maintaining a collection that would

be most useful for UT Health Science Center physicians and residents. Over the years, library staff members

taught many classes and consultations on using traditional library resources such as PubMed and even

brought popular Emerging Technologies Brown Bag sessions like Medical Applications for Smart Phones

and Using eBook readers to the downtown library. The library has served as a convenient gathering place for

many residents over the years as well.

As part of the UHS plans to remodel the UHC-D facility, the building housing the library will be torn down.

Although formal library space is not planned in the new facility, we will continue to provide reference services

and electronic resources to faculty and staff, and we will continue to offer training opportunities and special

technology programs through the cooperation of UHC-D.

The UT Health Science Center Libraries are pleased to be able to host an exhibit

of artwork from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM-San

Antonio), beginning July 7th, 2011. The featured art reproductions of

funerary artifacts from the cultures of West Mexico will be on display in the

School of Medicines Lecture Hall Commons through the end of August.

According to Paula Gortari, who is mounting the exhibit for UNAM, the items

to be displayed represent a vast area that includes parts of the present-day

states of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit. The art that will be exhibited can be datedback to the years between 100 B.C and 300 B.C.

The figurines are made from reddish or orange clay with geometric decorations

in red, white, black and yellow. They depict pregnant women or women

preparing food, musicians, dancers, flutists and warriors, all going about their

daily activities. A unique and interesting feature of these figurines is their

adornments: oversize ear and nose ornaments in the shape of a bar or a half moon, as well as bracelets and

    necklaces of several strands.

On display in the Briscoe Library July 7: Art of ancient Mexico

Each year, numerous research proposals for

promising new treatments make their way through

a peer-review process but do not receive funding,

although they have the potential to make

significant contribution to scientific discovery. The

National Health Council (NHC), with input from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has developed a web

database designed to bring researchers together with patient advocacy organizations and other funding

    sources. Its called HealthResearchFunding.Org .

How it works: Researchers whose proposals have been peer reviewed by either the NIH or by an NHCmember patient advocacy organization will be invited to register with HealthReseachFunding.Organd add an

abstract. They will have the ability to also search for NHC member organizations that fund research. NHC

member organizations will be able to search for research proposals, search for individual researchers, and

search and view other funding organizations. They will also be able to upload requests for proposals, including

posting ideas for collaboration with other funding sources.

The site will eventually expand to include corporations and private investors.

Major Pettigrews Last Stand, by Helen Simonson:Recommended by Rajia Tobia, Executive Director of Libraries

I love the main characters in this book Major Pettigrew, the English widower with the

stiff upper lip, and Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani widow shopkeeper. These two with little on

the surface to make them compatible, find companionship and love in the English coun-

tryside. In a way, the book could have been written by a 21st century Jane Austen. A

great summer read if you are looking for interesting characters and great prose writing.

Best idea for staying cool this summer: READSuggestions from the staff of The Libraries

Ice Station Zebra, by Alistair Maclean

Recommended by Ken Wise, Access Services Library Assistant: because you asked for

    something cool

The atomic submarine Dolphin has impossible orders: to sail beneath the ice -floes of the

Arctic Ocean to locate and rescue the men of weather-station Zebra, gutted by fire and

drifting with the ice-pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle. But the orders do not say

what the Dolphin will find if she succeeds -- that the fire at Ice Station Zebra was

sabotage, and that one of the survivors is a killer! (Product Information)

Dogs: A Natural History, by Jake Page

Recommended by Susan Hunnicutt, Special Projects Librarian

Dogs are amazing creatures, as everyone who loves them knows. Jake Page writes

about the wolf-dog connection, and about the co-evolution of dogs and human beings

going all the way back to before the dawn of recorded history. Where did the first

domestic dogs come from? How did they get to be the dogs they are today? How dodogs see the world? What do they think about us? This book is full of interesting and

useful information, yet you will feel like you are wasting time, in the best sense of

    the word.
