Barefoot Heart: Stories of a Migrant Child Announcing the One Community/One Book 2012 selection
The UT Health Science Center Libraries’ popular One Community/One Book
program will continue in 2012 with the theme of cultural diversity. The book
selected for reading and discussion is Barefoot Heart: Stories of a Migrant Child by
Elva Trevino Hart.
In Barefoot Heart , the author chronicles her memories of growing up in a migrant
farm worker family in Pearsall, Texas. The book details her family’s struggle to
make a living and to overcome prejudice and poverty through education. The
author’s spare yet elegant writing style makes for a moving read that encouragesreflection on a number of themes including the importance of family and
community, education as a way out of poverty, cultural diversity in our own South
Texas communities, and the promotion of cultural competence and empathy as we train tomorrow’s health
care professionals.
Plans for One Community/One Book include workshops for
discussion group leaders, book discussion groups, and several
speaking engagements for the author from February 23-25,
2012. Tentatively, Ms. Hart will speak on campus Friday,
February 24 at 12:00 noon. Copies of the book will beavailable through the library soon, and the bookstore will be
selling Barefoot Heart at a 25% discount, beginning in
September. A book signing will follow Ms. Hart’s talk on
February 24.
One Community/One Book 2012 is a collaborative effort
between The Libraries, the Center for Medical Humanities &
Ethics, the Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching
(ACET), and the San Antonio Public Library.
For information about One Community/One Book, contact
Susan Hunnicutt, Special Projects Librarian: Call 567-2406or email [email protected].

the Briscoe Library starting September 7.
The School of Medicine will provide peer tutors for the writing center through a work-
study program sponsored by Student Financial Aid. The peer writing tutors are
medical students who have volunteered to provide writing assistance to fellow students
from all Health Science Center schools. The tutors will be available Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Briscoe Library room 4.074 (Collaboratory) on a drop-in

Brushes with Nature :
Landscapes by Delores O’Neill
Meldrum will be on display in the
Briscoe Library Information
Commons through October 27,
2011.
The artist, who has recently moved to
San Antonio from California, is an
award-winning painter whose work has been featured in many juried
exhibitions and galleries, including the
Lana International Art Competition,
Campbell Thiebaud Gallery, San
Francisco; Watercolor Artists of
Sacramento Horizons, Fine Arts Center;
and the Georgia Watercolor Society, of
which she is a Signature Member.
Ms. Meldrum’s work is held in private
and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan.
The watercolors and oil paintings selected for this exhibit demonstrate Meldrum’s appreciation for the beauty
of nature. Many of the landscapes represent mountains in the Sierra Nevada. The artist sees landscapes “as
gardens of the world, public, private, wild or cultivated. I want to find beauty and capture the spirit, mood, or
feeling of the place.”
For more information about Brushes with Nature , contact the artist at [email protected], or by phone
at 210-736-2251.

“Ouch, that looks painful!” That is a common reaction from viewers of the library’s new exhibit on antique
medical instruments, located next to the Administrative Offices on the 3rd floor. The exhibit highlights several
aspects of medicine in the 17th and 18th centuries, displaying instruments donated to the library’s historical
collections by the Bexar County Medical Society and individuals. A scarificator, lancet, and blood cups were
used with bloodletting to cure diseases such as fever, madness, anemia, and debility, often making the patient
worse, rather than better. An old amputation kit and tourniquet and an Army Civil War surgical kit remind us
that amputation was often the only way to prevent gangrene resulting from traumatic war injuries, although
the lack of antiseptic practices often caused rather than prevented problems. A reproduction of a tintype held
by the University Archives illustrates Dr. Crawford Long’s discovery of the use of ether for surgical anesthesiain 1842. There is also an old saddlebag used by physicians riding horseback and an ophthalmological testing
kit belonging to Dr. Ferdinand Herff, a physician who moved to Texas from Germany in 1849 and became a
prominent surgeon in San Antonio. Finally, the display features a medical case belonging to Dr. Charles
Dixon, a physician who lead the fight against medical quackery and nostrums in San Antonio in the early
1900s.
More information on these as well as other interesting items in the library’s historical collections can be found
in the Treasures of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library blog at http://www.library.uthscsa.edu/
treasures/. The library has many other medical and dental instruments that have not yet been cataloged, and
archival staff would welcome help in identifying how they were used.

DeThorne, phone 567-2470 email: [email protected].

The Briscoe Library’s Information Desk was removed
at the end of July, opening up additional space for
study, group collaboration and laptop use. This area,
located directly across from the main entrance, is
equipped with electrical outlets and data lines, both
rare commodities in a building that was constructed
before the era of personal computers.
Current issues of 40 print journal titles are shelved in
this area for those who wish to browse the latest issues
without having to search through the entire journalcollection on the 4th floor. Popular magazines funded
through a generous donation are also shelved here.
Comfortable armchairs invite quiet reading, reflection or conversation. Tables provide ample space for
those who wish to spread out with study materials or work on their laptops or other mobile devices while
sipping a cup of coffee. We welcome comments and suggestions on how we might improve this space.
The services once provided at the Information Desk have been consolidated with Circulation Services and
librarians are on call to assist with research and reference help. To provide feedback or contact a librarian,
stop by the Circulation Desk, call 567-2450, schedule a consultation appointment, or send an email to
