Summer at HART

Salone del Mobile di Milano is the world’s largest and most influential interiors trade show. Taking place in April each year, it is the venue for hundreds of new products launches and sets the design agenda for next 12 months. C.P. Hart takes the largest team of any UK bathroom supplier to source new products and identify the latest trends.

This year nearly 400,000 visitors from around the world descended on Milan to explore 24 halls and 2,400 stands. Our view is that it was the liveliest and most exciting trade show of recent years. New products from Artelinea, Bette, Gessi and Samuel Heath were among the show-stoppers, all of which will be available first at C.P. Hart. Philippe Starck is regarded as the father of modern bathroom design. His refined and elegant minimalism, with its crisp, clean lines and gleaming white surfaces, have become the default choice for many. Those who yearned for a more opulent approach have, until recently, suffered from a more limited choice.

Versace combine the prestige of one of the world’s most famous fashion houses with a rock n’roll reputation. Their passion for ceramics goes back a long way. Versace’s famous Medusa head logo was inspired by a mosaic on the floor of a ruin in Rome, near where Gianni Versace and his siblings grew up. Versace Ceramics are known for bold, decorative collections in rich reds and golds, with a striking use of bas-relief. Versace Ceramics are now available at C.P. Hart, demonstrated in a dramatic new display at our Waterloo showroom. We also have a specialist tile consultant to advise on selection and design.

Modena in Italy is known as the birthplace of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. It is also the home of a newer luxury manufacturer, Petracer’s, who produce ceramics and bathroom furniture inspired by the ancient beauty of the city. Petracer’s was established by Angelo Marchesi in direct opposition to what he describes as ‘minimalist dogma’. Marchesi reinterprets classical forms for the modern bathroom, using the highest quality materials and artisanal Italian craftsmanship to create glamorous collections. His mantra is ‘without compromise’, delivered through daring design and an exceptional attention to detail. C.P. Hart launched Petracer’s in the UK last November, and have now expanded the range with new tiles and furniture.

Advances in materials technology have given designers the freedom to create lighter, sculptural shapes for the bathroom. C.P. Hart’s collection of contemporary freestanding baths exemplify this. Made from a unique amalgam of organic minerals and high tech resins, the result is a material that is extremely strong and durable, and can be cast into the most elegant of designs. This exclusive range is named after four famous Lake District waters, as they are English-made and each one is beautiful and distinctive.

The Coniston is an oval bath, a perfect shell in which to relax. It’s our most specifi ed contemporary bath, frequently chosen by architects to complement high-end developments. The Leadon bath has a pleasing symmetry - ideal for sharing a long soak! – or consider the Rydal with its geometric fl owing lines. The Elter is a slipper bath, with a high end to lean comfortably against. The mineral composite retains heat, so unlike a cast iron or steel-pressed bath it doesn’t feel cold to the touch.

The fi nest bathrooms are always distinguished by exceptional fi t and fi nish. As bathrooms have become more sophisticated, so installation requires more highly-skilled and specialised practitioners. You need to be able to trust your installer to fi t high value components correctly and with extreme care. C.P. Hart’s Approved Installer programme is intended to remove any doubt over your choice of installer. Our Approved Installers have all undergone background checks, and must meet standards of care, service and

behaviour. They are given training on new and complex products. All have their work regularly scrutinised by our Installer Manager, who can intervene on the rare occasions problems arise.

The process is very simple. Just talk to your C.P. Hart sales consultant, who will make initial contact with the installers for you and request quotes. You can then choose from a short-list of Approved Installers, knowing that each has the skills and professionalism to fi t the perfect bathroom.

Christian Sieger and his brother Michael run their world-renowned design consultancy from the small Rhineland town of Sassenburg. Their award-winning designs, from sleek taps and spa-style showers to full bathroom collections, combine innovation with a feel for contemporary luxury.

Luxury doesn’t have to be gold and sumptuous carpets. For us, it’s about understated simplicity, clean lines and often something that pushes technology to the limit.

TECH MEETS LUXENew technology can offer the ultimate luxury experience

Technology has had dramatic effects in almost all areas of modern life, but many people’s perception is that bathrooms have been almost immune to this revolution. Not so. In fact the biggest change in bathroom design over the next fi ve years will be the increasing use of technology to provide a more enjoyable, more personalised and more hygienic experience.

The latest digital systems offer precise control over water fl ow and temperature. C.P. Hart’s eMoto range provides stylish and simple controls within the bathroom, and an iPad app for remote use. So you can now run the perfect bath from your sofa!

Even more sophisticated is the Smart Water range from German engineers, Dornbracht. Smart Water delivers a sensual experience by matching light and colour to the pattern and fl ow of water. C.P. Hart’s fl agship showroom near London Waterloo has the most comprehensive working display outside Germany, and a full demonstration is strongly recommended.

Digital technology has also enhanced the latest generation of ‘steam and spa’ units. Perhaps the ultimate bathroom luxury, a sauna or Turkish bath can be installed in almost any home with new digital controls to provide an experience that can be pre-set for different users.

Automated WC’s with an integrated bidet function offer the most natural form of hygiene possible; cleaning with water. The new generation of Neorest from Toto of Japan takes this a stage further. As well as cleaning you, it cleans itself. Duravit’s Sensowash packs the ‘shower toilet’ technology into the seat, which can be paired with a range of WC’s from designers Philippe Starck and Christian Sieger of Sieger Design.

Bathroom televisions are not new, but the latest generation of LED displays are concealed behind mirrors, becoming magically visible when in use. They can stream digital content from websites as well as playing DVDs or showing terrestrial, satellite or cable TV. If you prefer sound to vision, new bathroom cabinets can be synced with your iPod or phone to stream your playlists in crystal clear stereo.

Deco decadence at C.P. Hart

DECO

1. CHATWALA new brassware collection with bold geometric lines, inspired by the great Deco hotels built in New York in the 1930’s.

2. ARCC.P. Hart’s British-made Arc brassware features curvaceous polished-chrome spouts and modern quarter-turn technology. Each tap includes a choice of chrome or ceramic handle.

South-African born, London-based designer Justin Van Breda is one of a new generation of interiors and product designers who are challenging the dominance of minimalism in the bathroom. Justin explains ‘I started designing bathroom furniture when we couldn’t fi nd fi nd the kind of furniture we wanted for our interior design projects. I wanted really special vanities that would be a highlight in the bathroom and could

be teamed with elegant taps. After that, C.P. Hart asked us to develop an exclusive collection, using all of our expertise in materials, including wood, antique mirror, copper and brass, and detailing such as lacquer work, carving and inlays.’ Poirot references the glamour of the Art Deco period, with a luxurious feel and timeless, clean-lined styling.

Charles Percival Hart, a South London builder, opened the first C.P. Hart in 1937, selling to builders and plumbers. With his two sons, he built the business to become a leading bathroom specialist for both professional and retail customers. Charles was a passionate advocate of great design. He was one of the first to source products from across Europe, adapting them in his own workshop to fit the peculiarities of British plumbing. He always believed that you shouldn’t sell anything you don’t understand in detail. And he offered exceptional service so that his customers invariably came back, often after intervals of years. GESSI RETTANGOLODesigner Prospero Rasulo founded his design studio in Milan more than 25 years ago, and has been a regular collaborator with Gessi. His Rettangolo collection has a simple, angular beauty that has been widely imitated. The original remains a design icon, especially dramatic in Gessi’s new brushed gold or black metal finish.
