Vitamin D: The sun is a great source of vitamin D which is necessary for bone and muscle health and also supports our immune system. 2. Positive mood: You know it. In the cold dark days of winter, we can start to feel lethargic. Once the sun starts shining, we feel more energetic, and our mood improves due to the sun’s ability to help our bodies produce endorphins and the feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin. 3. Up goes the stock market: Strange but true. “Sunshine is strongly positively correlated with daily stock returns” says David Hirshliefer, Ph.D. of Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. 4. Kills “bugs”: Sunshine acts as a natural antiseptic, killing viruses, bacteria, and mold. 5. Sound sleep: Natural spectrum light exposure during the day can help your body to increase production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin at night. This encourages sound sleep. A good night’s rest does incredible things for our physical health and emotional well-being. 6. Healthy liver: When infants are born with the condition jaundice, the treatment sometimes includes light therapy. This is because natural spectrum light, helps the liver to function better and clear away toxins from our bodies. Increased liver function equals increased health. The sun helps make this happen. Once the sun starts shining, we feel more energetic, and our mood improves due to the sun’s ability to help our bodies produce endorphins and the feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin.

Many, Many Thanks

The top number on your budget calculation is usually your income. That’s the easy part. Your outflows are something else. It’s difficult to know in advance how much all your expenses for the month will be. Your budget will break if you don’t give expenses enough weight.

John Lynch, director of the Center for Research on Consumer Financial Decision Making at the University of Colorado, Boulder, researched the matter. He found that people don’t really think enough about rising expenses, so they end up thinking they can afford things they can’t.

One crucial component is to create an explicit budget. Relying on vague calculations makes it look possible that everything can fit in, says Lynch, so they feel free to spend.

Some people spend more because of the way they view willpower, thinking it’s limited so they deserve to reward themselves for showing some. People who think willpower is unlimited think no reward is needed.

There is a relationship between mood and money habits. When people are sad, they save less, spend more, and consume more. This is a good reason to give financial decisions another look and make a big effort to change your mood and attitude.

Thoughtful Budget Planning

Container gardening has grown rapidly in recent years. Follow these tips for success!

Bigger containers are better. The greatest challenge of container vegetable growing is watering, since soil dries out faster in pots than in the ground. A larger volume of soil won’t dry out as fast, but be sure that any container has holes so excess water can drain away. You may be able to finesse a sun shortage by placing a garden wagon under the pot and move it to follow the sun.

Spread mulch over the soil in pots just as you would in a garden.

Herbs are easy to grow, especially if you begin with transplants. They add a fresh-grown taste to almost any meal, but remember that all herbs need full sun. Some, such as rosemary, prefer dryer soil and fewer nutrients.

Baby greens, such as lettuce and spinach, are simple to grow. Sow seeds right in the pot. They take a week to sprout, but then will quickly reach a harvest size of three to four inches.

Everybody loves tomatoes, but they take some work. Find dwarf varieties that only grow to a certain size and bear all their fruit in a few weeks. Buy transplants rather than trying to start them from seed. You need a large container, at least the size of a five-gallon bucket. Provide a cage or install sturdy stakes when you plant and tie new shoots to the stakes.
