Dear Parents/Carers In response to the removal of the one-year MFL GCSE course, we have been looking at different courses that might be suitable for those students who want to continue with the study of a language but who would rather not do it over 3 years.. The Modern Foreign Languages Department is considering offering a VOCATIONAL course in the one-year option block in Year 9. The Vocational Award in Global Business Communication is designed to provide a vocational qualification that will facilitate a learner’s ability to work more effectively in the global economy. This qualification is designed to create independent learners who will develop skills associated with language learning such as problem solving, creativity, literacy and also gain an understanding of the personal benefits of linguistic competence and the importance of cultural awareness. A strong motivation to work independently is necessary for this course. The vocational Award in Global Business Communication is made up of 4 units: Global Opportunities Global Travel Global Customer Relationships Global Sales and Marketing. Three out of the four units will be assessed internally in the form of Controlled Assessments and the fourth one will be assessed externally in the form of an online test. We would be offering this course in both FRENCH and SPANISH but as with all courses it will be dependent on enough student interest. In addition, the MFL Department has recently recruited a new colleague who is also an Italian specialist. As a result, we would be really excited to launch an Italian GCSE as a three year course but again this will be dependent on student uptake. We invite all Year 8 parents to respond to the survey that has been uploaded to the Parent Portal regarding the MFL options at Key Stage 4. Please do not hesitate to contact me via email at [email protected] if you have any queries.

The Year 8 girls have shown real enthusiasm for Netball this year. We have had 20 girls turning up to training each week which is excellent to see. On Tuesday 3 October they had their first matches. Tomlinscote and Fullbrook came to Collingwood to play a triangular fixture. Collingwood played mixed ability teams to ensure that everybody got a game and no team was stronger than the other. Team 1 played Fullbrook and played really well in both attack and defence. They managed to win 6 - 4. Team 2 played a strong Tomlinscote team and unfortunately lost 3 - 9. This was a great experience for all involved. For many, it was their first ever match, so well done. Team 1: Ellie Morgan, Laurel Arkesden, Upasna Gurung, Neve San Emeterio, Ellie Hawes, Melissa Harding, Amber Lilley and Orla Harman Team 2: Catherine Voss, Stephanie Pineza, Lara Pearson, Mia Evangelista, Chloe Cook, Hope Hutson, Abi Wickens, Briana Blidaru and Amelia Hinckley

LIBRARY NEWS ...

It has been a busy time in the Library recently. Here is a taster of what our students have been involved in …. We celebrated the European Day of Languages on Tuesday 26 September. At break time and lunchtime students were able to sample pastries from around Europe: France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and England.

Students enjoyed participating in different activities including a flag quiz, an animal sounds quiz from across Europe and our interactive whiteboards featured different native speakers. On Wednesday 27 September we marked National Poetry Day. The theme this year was ‘Freedom’. There was a choice of different activities: paint a poem, very popular with our Years 7 and 8 students, poem puzzles and on the whiteboard we showed poets reciting Freedom poems.

Year 9 The Year 9 football team began its national cup campaign with an away match at Piggott school in Reading. After some inspirational words from the manager, the boys began the game dominating possession to get a 1-0 lead with Alex Ravenhill setting up Sam Hillman for a nice finish to gain a deserved lead. Collingwood then controlled the game with some brilliant defending from Kai Hobbs and Joe Handley, only allowing the opposition to test James White once, but he managed to deal with it very well. Also, Isaac Becket and Tom Gandy showed some great link up play down the left side of the pitch which resulted in many quality balls into the box. With two minutes to go Jonny Chapman got the ball 35 yards out to score an awesome volley. To reward this goal, Mr Jarmyn immediately subbed him. Moments later the final whistle blew meaning Collingwood were through to the next round of the national cup with a 2-0 win over Piggott school. The team have taken confidence from this win for upcoming matches and carry on their unbeaten streak so far this season. Due to his outstanding performance Isaac Becket received man of the match.

Year 8 The Year 8 boys played their second league game of the season away at Farnham Heath End. The game was end to end with Collingwood coming out victorious in an 8-6 goal fest! After going behind 2-0 at the start, the boys reacted brilliantly and their immediate pressure forced an own goal. After that the boys took control and even though there were goals at both ends the team took control in the second half. Goal scorers were Jacob Benskin (3), George Grosch (2), Lucas Grove (1) and Jake Coltart (1). Well done boys. Next game away to Fernhill. Squad: Alex Wiseman, Tyler Hinton, Zak Jones, Aidan Greene, Callum Keigher, Xander Ewing, Lucas Grove, Jake Coltart, Jacob Benskin, Ryen Wright, George Grosch, Roman Sardo

On Tuesday 17 October at 7.00pm we would like to invite parents along to a session that will help you to keep your child safe both on the Internet and on Social Media if they are using it. This vitally important session will take place in Kingston Theatre from 7.00pm until approximately 8.00pm and has some key and urgent messages which will educate you about safety in this area. We are increasingly worried about some students who have open, unmonitored access to social media platforms and the internet. Collingwood College’s Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mr Cleary, will run the session with support from other staff members. The session will cover: The current, popular Apps – what they can/cannot do and access The legalities of some of the behaviours young people are carrying out nationwide How to control/monitor the usage on your child’s device/s Top tips to keep them safe online. As a prelude to this, Mr Cleary will deliver a session to the current Year 7 students, that very afternoon. All other year groups that have received a similar session in the past 12 months will have refresher assemblies delivered by Mr Cleary at the beginning of the term. If you cannot attend please can we ask that you take a vested interest in monitoring your child’s internet and social media usage. In the vast majority of the few potentially serious situations we have encountered at Collingwood, parents were not aware of what their children were posting or accessing via their devices. I will be issuing an abridged version of the presentation but urge you to attend if you can spare around an hour of your time. I would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance and how many places you require at this session by emailing [email protected] .
