UF Health Shands Hospital Ranked Best in Florida

UF Health Shands Hospital emerged as Florida’s top health center and one of the nation’s elite this week in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2020-2021 Best Hospitals survey, with a remarkable nine medical specialties placing in the nation’s Top 50—more than any other hospital in the sunshine state.

“I am extremely proud of everyone in the UF Health family whose compassion, dedication and skill contribute to making UF Health Shands Hospital one of the best in the nation and No. 1 in Florida,” said David R. Nelson, M.D., senior vice president for health affairs at UF and president of UF Health. “These rankings are one reflection of how our employees are entirely focused on giving their best every day to meet the needs of our patients.”

Visitors practice required distancing and wearing masks to enter the hospital.

It certainly is good to see the volunteers in action at the hospital now. There is the smell of cookies baking in the Café, Starbucks

coffee is ready, a musician is playing the piano and the golf cart shuttle drivers are delivering visitors to both entrances of the hospital. Volunteers at the Front Desk are greeting visitors, and escorting patients and visitors to infusion, radiology and outpatient services. The Gift Gallery has loads of new items for purchase and it looks great. The Day Captains Office is open to help answer questions and provide resources for the volunteers serving that day. Behind the scenes, volunteers in Dietary are stocking shelves and Supply Chain volunteers are delivering supplies to the floors. ASU/PACU volunteers are getting rooms ready for the next surgical patient. Things at the hospital are slowly returning to what they used to be!

Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe has lots of excitement happening right now. The modular unit has been delivered, YOTS–1 will be demolished and the construction of the new building will begin. Be sure to see the article on Page 9 of this month’s Hummingbird. They have been open since early May and going strong ever since.

As I read the paper this morning, the percentage of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 remains under 5 percent. And at the hospital, as Don Henderson said in the Friday Update on Sept.18, our hospital continues to see a decline in the total number of COVID-19 positive cases. I am hopeful this decline will continue but we must diligently act safely—wear masks, social distance, and wash and sanitize our hands frequently. We have seen these numbers change quickly over the past few months.

In the Sept. 18 Update, it was announced the University of Florida has been named the No. 6 public university in the country by U.S. News & World Report. It is an honor to be part of a university that is so highly rated. We are all excited to see what the future holds for us, the UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation.

I’m looking forward to seeing many more of you back at the hospital with your usual smiles and energetic service. Be careful and stay safe!

Welcome Back And Thank You

As you know you are greatly appreciated and you have been missed, it is a joy and pleasure to see all the Volunteers who have returned.

I know many more Volunteers would like to return to the hospital, but for personal reasons cannot, and we understand.

Lou and I have been working in the Cafe—it has been a learning experience, but it has been fun. We’ve seen so many familiar faces, nurses, employees, etc., and even though we are all wearing masks, we can see the smile in their eyes.

We are waiting patiently to hear when we can all return–until then, we are taking one day at a time and doing the best we can.

I truly believe we are now seeing a small flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, soon we will see the bright light.

A Word from Jeannie, Our Auxiliary PresidentOur Auxiliary President

Day Captains Office

It has been a long time in coming but we are finally back in the office. You have all been missed and your patience in getting back during these uncertain times is appreciated. I was so pleased that your contributions as Day Captains were recognized with the annual Outstanding Team award this year by the Auxiliary. Our plaque is hanging over the computer in the office. Although not all of the day captains are returning right now, we are able to adapt with a one shift a day schedule until you are all able to return. Thank you all for what you do as day captains to service our volunteers and the hospital. Looking forward to when you can all return to volunteer! ~~ Cindy Ginns, Day Captains Office

Dietary I’d like to take a moment to give a warm “welcome back” to volunteers Reda Wentz and Cheryl McCormack who volunteer in the Dietary Department. Thank you so much for returning during these pandemic times. They also are working more days than their regular schedule. A big kudos to them both. I know the Dietary Department loves having them back. Thanks to both of them for all they do! ~~ Beckie Montgomery, Dietary Department (Praise continues on Page 7)

Appreciation for Team Care“Thank you for all of your concern for my father who passed away on Aug. 12. He contracted COVID-19 and was under the care of your team at UF Health The Villages® Hospital. I appreciated all of the phone calls from the nurses and doctors, especially the nurse who called me before he died

and gave me the opportunity to say goodbye even though he was unable to respond. Thank you for all you do for patients and families.”

Geriatric Pharmacy Board Certification Destiny Banum has become our latest board-certified pharmacist at UF Health The Villages® Hospital. Destiny’s recent certification in Geriatric Pharmacy demonstrates her intricate knowledge of medication effects in older adults qualifying her to optimize therapeutic outcomes and contribute to the health care team at advanced practice levels while specializing in the needs of the patients we serve. She is now one of only 4,600 board-certified geriatric pharmacists worldwide and becomes the fifth board certified pharmacist at our hospital! Congratulations, Destiny! Destiny Banum

A WOWWOW Story

FridayFriday Update Update

President and CEO Don Henderson's

Rioting in major cities across the U.S. has spread to The Villages, a popular Central Florida retirement community.

Protesters marching in The Villages led to widespread rioting and looting. Items taken were limited to laxatives, vitamins, hearing aid batteries, reading glasses, energy drinks, designer masks and surgical stockings.

The thugs were easily caught and arrested, however, since they were using walkers and golf carts to flee.

The protests have been limited to the evening hours because most of the lawbreakers either had doctor’s appointments during the day or rioting would have interfered with their afternoon naps.

The marches didn’t last that long because many of the demonstrators had

to get home to pee. In most cases, the demonstrators simply forgot why they were even there.

Officials considered a curfew starting at 9 p.m. but since that’s the time when most of the residents go to bed anyway, it was decided that it wasn’t needed.

Community leaders concluded that part of the problem was that residents were restless because they had too much time on their hands since the recreation centers, pools, theaters, boutique stores and especially the bars were closed due to the coronavirus.

Community officials wanted to form a committee to look further into the problem, but the next day no one could remember why they were meeting.

Most Villagers will probably agree that we were raised in the best place and in the best time the world has ever seen.

It was a time when we valued certain

principles; even took them for granted. You know, things like respect, accountability and responsibility. Most of us still live by those standards but, as I look around, a lot has changed.

Sometimes I find it’s more enjoyable looking back, and we certainly have time for that these days.

As I drive the shuttle from the parking lot to our hospital’s front door and vice versa, it reminds me of a time when I rode my bike to school and back home, and of the hours in-between.

I may take my golf cart around town and stop at a Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts and order a latte. Many decades ago, I would be drinking Kool-Aid or Tang made from water that came from our kitchen tap.

I may order a French dip sandwich or Cobb salad, when before it was inevitably a PB & Jelly or grilled cheese.

I remember our evening meals were almost always meat and potatoes with some vegetables. Vegans had not yet come into the world, and I don’t recall a single person having a food allergy. Now with my Fitbit strapped to an ankle (you get more steps in that way), I walk through the neighborhood and see all the maintenance people mowing lawns, raking leaves, pruning, edging and weeding. Hmm, didn’t we do all that ourselves, and even be rewarded with an allowance?

Strolling along one of the many nature paths in The Villages, I see a variety of animals in the sky and treetops, the marshes and the ponds, and Villagers on their iPhones. And I’m reminded of when we used to play jump rope, kickball, tag and hide & seek, and how free we were from interruptions caused by a ringtone, text tone, tweet or swoosh.

And come dinner time … get this … the whole family would sit around the dining table and talk and eat together. Table manners were a must, “please” and “thank you” were required if you wanted something out of reach, and you’d better never take more than you could eat.

But here we are in 2020 and as different as the world has become, I am thankful to be living right here in The Villages where you can do cartwheels on the Square and even be joined by others still able to do them.

I was grocery shopping and walked by the flower section on my way to cookies and pies when several adorable floral arrangements saw me and we stared at one another. The vases looked like they were made to fit shuttle cup holders, and I thought, “What a great way to dress up the shuttle.” And it was!

More Shuttle News

Keith Bonn ReportsResults of Last Month’sShuttle Needs QuestThe last three open shifts have been filled. We finally got to 28 drivers—four drivers a day to staff the limited 9 a.m. to 6:10 p.m. schedule.

Lou got Roger Akers’ name to me on a Tuesday, he trained the next Tuesday and started the next Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Dick Schnurpfeil had been out do to the summer heat and is coming back.

And one of my current drivers, Bob Bassett, who wanted a second shift took Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I also have talked to our snowbirds and all but one will be back and looking to drive some. Of course, we probably will get normal attrition, but the shuttle service should be good until next April when the snowbirds leave.

Roger Akers (left) interviews with Keith Bonn to add a shift as cart shuttle driver to his schedule. Roger also works at the hospital’s front desk.

The Shuttle Service Welcome back to our Foundation Sponsored Parking Lot Shuttle Service. Since resuming the shuttle service on June 12, guests at the hospital have offered many kind comments that the shuttle service is back and running again. We appreciate those that are again driving and we value their help staffing the parking lot shuttle carts. And to all 70+ of our shuttle drivers, whether currently driving or here in spirit, you have lifted the spirits of our Hospital Auxiliary Foundation in the face of this adversity and the many challenges we have faced since March. Simply put, “Well Done!”

I have always loved jigsaw puzzles. When I was growing up, my mother would leave a puzzle on a table in the rec room where anyone in the family could come by and add

a piece or sit down and really get to work on finishing the picture.

It seemed I was the one in the family who spent the most time in the chair and put my full energy into getting a puzzle finished. When I had my

own family, I made sure we had family puzzles and puzzles races as well!

My kids loved to see if they could beat Mom by finishing the same

puzzle in less time. I didn’t make it easy for them!

When I moved to The Villages, I volunteered to manage the puzzles at Lake Miona Recreation Center. Then COVID-19 hit and the Rec Center was closed for an indefinite period of time. Not only were puzzles unavailable but people were also shut in their homes with so much time on their hands.

What if I could deliver puzzles to homes in The Villages, run it as a library and include only

quality puzzles? What if I could also make the service FREE so no one would have to spend a fortune purchasing brand new puzzles? And that is how Puzzles on Wheels was born.

I wasn’t sure how such an idea would work out. In its first week, 14 households asked for puzzles and I delivered them all myself. Puzzles on Wheels grew quickly. Now in its 20th week, 90 to 100 households receive puzzles every week!

Because Puzzles on Wheels had to get puzzles to so many homes, I needed volunteers to deliver the puzzles. We now have eight volunteer drivers who deliver puzzles every Tuesday from 1-5 p.m. covering a total of over 200 miles toevery corner of The Villages! Puzzles on Wheelsalso has its own website with approximately1,000 puzzles to choose from.

The only requirement to order puzzles from the website is to live in The Villages. There is no charge although donations are appreciated to reimburse our drivers for gas expenses and for other necessary supplies such as labels, tape and “thank-you” bags.

There is also no need to sign up. Just go to www.puzzlesonwheels.com and choose one or two puzzles. Each household is limited to two puzzles from Puzzles on Wheels at any time.

And welcome to the Puzzles on Wheels family!

Sept. 28, 2020 — New space arrives in the form of a modular structure placed behind YOTS-2. All pricing will be moved into the modular building with a new donations drop off on Old Dixie Highway. As quickly as that move is accomplished, YOTS-1 will be emptied, items will be moved to storage, and the demolition of YOTS-1 can begin. We are all living through very extraordinary times the likes of which most of us have never experienced. These are the times we must pull together and support those inneed. For us, in our community, the ones we really need to support are our heroes, our health care workers.

We are all living through very extraordinary times the likes of which most of us have never experienced. These are the times we must pull together and support those inneed. For us, in our community, the ones we really need to support are our heroes, our health care workers.

The pandemic has forced many of our health care workers to sacrifice their lives to helpothers. They selflessly are there for us, working countless hours, despite the dangers tothemselves and their families. The most likely predictions are that the pandemic is not going away anytime soon so we need to make sure that we support our heroes so that

they can continue to be there for our community.

I am encouraging you to join me by contributing to the UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary FoundationPandemic Preparedness Fund. All funds you donate are being used to make sure our health care providers have sufficient personal protective equipment in the event of another pandemic outbreak. To make a donation visit our website at www.tvrhfoundation.org. We are all in this together. Wishing you and your families good health.
