Dear Parents, The end of an extremely busy and productive Term Oone for 2016 is upon us! I am sure that staff, students and parents are looking forward to the upcoming holiday break before we tackle the even busier winter term. Recently we have had yet another opportunity to celebrate the outstanding success of our students in the 2015 International Benchmark Tests (IBTs), which operate in countries in the Middle East, Australia, South Asia, South Africa, and South East Asia. These tests are designed to assess the performance of students in English, Science and Mathematics against local independent schools, national and international standards. Our students continue to keep the Reddam House Waterfall Estate flag flying high by achieving outstanding results. A number of our students obtained results which place them within the top 5%, 2% and 1% of results achieved within the international sample (and they are the recipients of awards from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER)). We are incredibly proud of their exceptional performances! Success breeds success, and we look forward to great things from our students in the years to come. Our congratulations must also extend to the teaching staff for their role in preparing our students with a world-class education. Congratulations to the individual recipients of Certificates in the 2015 IBTs: (The students who have received Certificates of Distinction scored within the top 5% of students, those who achieved a High Distinction Certificate achieved in the top 2% and those who achieved an Honour Certificate achieved within the 1% in the international sample): NEWSLETTER | 18 March 2016 | VOLUME 1:9 From the Headmistress Liséttè Noonan

Dear Parents,

The end of an extremely busy and productive Term Oone for 2016 is upon us!

Congratulations to the individual recipients of Certificates in the 2015 IBTs: (The students who have received Certificates of Distinction scored within the top 5% of students, those who achieved a High Distinction Certificate achieved in the top 2% and those who achieved an Honour Certificate achieved within the 1% in the international sample):

Please see the attached graphs further in this newsletter detailing Reddam House Waterfall Estate’s results. Due to the invaluable information gleened from these reports, we have decided that all our students from Grade 3 – 9 will write these benchmark tests annually. Each student who wrote this benchmark last year, has received their individual report which we have printed and which your child should have brought home to you from this past Wednesday.

This type of achievement by our students must surely allay any fears that parents have as they peruse their child’s first term’s report. I’d like to appeal to parents not to overreact negatively

Page 4: news.reddamwaterfall.co.zanews.reddamwaterfall.co.za/documents/CollegeNewslett…  · Web viewTajme Maharaj. XinYin (Cher) Chen. Vivian Lu. Grade 10. Gontse Mohlatlole. ... A special

when your son or daughter brings home a result which might not be their best. This type of reaction simply adds to your child’s anxiety the next time they prepare and complete an assessment. Rather ask if they understand where they went wrong and if they now understand – this empowers them to learn from their mistakes as opposed to fearing their mistakes.

I would like to conclude by wishing all our families a happy and safe holiday and I look forward to welcoming you all back refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of Term Two 2016!

Regards

It is with regret that I inform you that Mrs Inge Marais will be leaving Reddam House Waterfall Estate at the end of Term 2, 2016 to take up a Mathematical Literacy teaching position at Dainfern College. Ms. Samantha McCan will be replacing Mrs Marais and will be joining Reddam House Waterfall College at the beginning of Term 3, 2016. I’m sure you will joining me in wishing Mrs Marais, who is a founding teacher at our school, all the best in her new position. We will miss her smiling face throughout the college

Congratulations to Mrs. Elma Dannamm for being awarded the Most Enthusiastic eLearning Teacher. Her music books that she has created over the years of teaching are looking brilliant along with the videos that she has inserted. Both she and the students are excited about the outcome. Well done!

Dear music parents,

The term is drawing to a close and the Music Department has so much to be proud and thankful for. We have on loan a fabulous 2m grand Mayer Bros. Munchen piano, as well as a Yamaha upright piano from Mr Walter Dammann, our voice trainer. The students are the soul of the department, but now we have a heartbeat- the grand piano. Thank you very much!

The Choir has grown in numbers and in stature. The students rehearsed every Tuesday from 4-5.30pm whether they were tired, hot, despondent, or exhausted. It always amazes me how Music can uplift and transform how we feel.

A special word of acknowledgement has to go to the students of the Middle College. They are energetic, vibrant and full of life. The senior students proved themselves to be mature and very helpful. The voice students form the backbone of the choir and words cannot describe how grateful I am for their support. The combined rehearsal with Mr Daryth Crawford and his Drakensberg Old Boys Choir on Saturday 5 March was a resounding success. The choir did us all proud.

We have nearly 40 students taking music as a subject and each student has to have an instrumental tutor. The music staff are working long hours behind the screens teaching and nurturing young music talents. My sincere thanks to my colleagues.

The system of textbooks is working very well this year. It is now easy to assess work and the design of the textbooks constantly generates marks so that the students are not put under undue stress when all the other subjects are assessed at the same time.

Kindly take note that there will be a practical examination in Term 2. I will, in due course, send out all the relevant information to the music staff, who in turn will discuss with each student what is required of them.

My sincere thanks also goes to Mrs. Lisette Noonan for her unwavering support for the music department. It is easy to do well thanks to her.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Elma DammannHead: College Music

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

Surprised, intrigued and quite curious, this is how we felt on 26 February. The grade 11 and 12 Life Sciences students had the opportunity to sleep over at the Transvaal museum in Pretoria.

We arrived with lots of food in our bags and excitement in our hearts. Not only did we travel through a time machine that night and experienced many interesting surprises (no, Mrs P and Mr Van Niekerk, it is not cool hiding behind wild animals and giving us frights as we try and win our treasure hunt), but we also got to bond as a group and learn about many amusing qualities that we all seem to have: Tasmin has an irrational fear of birds, no matter where we go Gugu and Rene will still sleep in style (they brought a pump-up bed), Mrs P has a favourite dinosaur, we all now know what a ‘toitois’ is and Josh, Lizel and Matthew are an enduring treasure hunting team. Our night ended with us appropriately watching Night at the museum. It was an unforgettable and hilarious night.
