Nau mae haere mai The start of any new year is an exciting time full of enthusiasm and optimism for the opportunities ahead. Fresh starts are one of the great things about schools. There is the chance to learn from the lessons of last year, reset goals and strive to achieve success. I have encouraged our students to make the most of this optimism and also congratulated them on the very purposeful and positive start they have made, something that is a feature of our school. Our students are aware of our high expectations of them and they have settled quickly into making the most of their school year. As well as our 70 Year 7 students we welcome around 40 new students who have recently arrived in Cromwell including five internationals - two from Japan and three from Brazil. Our roll is up on last year and will be close to 400 students for the first time in several years. We also welcome fourteen Apartments students from Wellington, Northland, Hamilton, Gisborne, Napier, Tauranga and the greater Auckland region. They too have made a great start to the year and I know they will add much to the character and leadership of our school. They had a very successful tramp over the Routeburn Track in the weekend as their introductory activity. I caught up with them above the Falls Hut and they were buzzing from the experience. Thank you to Bill Roxburgh, our Outdoor Pursuits Director, and his wife Marie for an excellent weekend. I have enjoyed getting to know our new year 7’s and have been impressed by their attitude and efforts in their classes. They enjoyed their first day last Monday, particularly their activities with our Year 13. Our new playground is proving to be a valuable asset. All students have been setting their goals for the year during form times and these will be detailed on interim reports due out later this term. Year 13 have had their Leadership Camp at our Aquatics Centre this week in preparation for their roles around school and also their peer support programme with Year 7’s. We have two new teaching staff this year. Gavin Jenkins is our new materials technology teacher and recently taught at Mt Hutt College. Karen Gallagher will be teaching a Year 11 Physical Education class and we welcome back Karen Inglis and Alison Jackson who were on leave last year. Well done to Larissa van der Hoeff on her outstanding performances at the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Championships held in December last year. Larissa competed against other athletes with disabilities and gained 2nds in the 200 metres and javelin and a first in the 400 metres in a national record! Our rowing team is determined to perform well at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships in two weeks time and they have been up early every morning practising in preparation for the event. Tuesday next week is our School Athletics. It is a day of colour, competition and house spirit and we welcome parents to attend during the day. Congratulations to the following students who achieved Excellence Endorsements in NCEA last year. Year 11: Tomas Burai, Rachel Clark, Liam Crum and Jonathan Smith; Year 12: David Borrie; Year 13: Jamie Crum. This is a fine achievement! Nineteen students achieved Merit Endorsements which is a similar number to last year. We look forward to celebrating their achievement with our Business Sponsors Scholarships later this term. Year 11 and 13 results were similar overall to national roll based figures while Year 12 was 10% above national figures. These overall results are sound but we are confident that our students are capable of achieving consistently above national figures and this remains a cornerstone goal of the College. It has been an excellent start and we look forward to another successful year at the College as we aspire to our motto ‘Whaia te taumata – Pursue the Highest Peaks’, Deserve Success. I have enjoyed getting to know our new year 7’s and have been impressed by their attitude and efforts in their classes. They enjoyed their first day last Monday, particularly their activities with our Year 13. Our new playground is proving to be a valuable asset.

CONGRATULATIONS

Hamish Wilkinson and Michael Manson have gained selection for the O.C.C.A. Year 7/8 rep cricket team following trials in Alexandra on Sunday. They play their first representative game in Invercargill this weekend. Jarod Hucklebridge, Sam Pimm and Isaac Steentjes have been selected for the O.C.C.A. Under 15 representative team.

BRINGING COMPUTERS TO CROMWELL COLLEGE

At Cromwell College we encourage students to bring their own personal devices, such as laptops, netbooks and smartphones. Cromwell College has site-wide wireless internet access and the content is filtered like all internet at the College. In the senior school we now have lockable lockers available for use, so students can be assured their device will be secure when not in use. If you are looking at buying a new device, we do not recommend any particular brand or model. However some points to consider are:

It has a battery that lasts 4-5 hours, although it is unlikely students will be on computers all period, all day.

It can connect to an authenticating proxy (some Android devices cannot)

Wireless card with 802.11g wireless, n standard wireless is even better.

At least 2GB ram in Netbooks/Laptops (4GB or more if you plan on running intensive programs like Adobe Photoshop).

Microsoft Office is not as important as the students have access to Google Apps through the school. If you wish to have word processing etc then “Open Office” is a free alternative.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TOPS

The next PE uniform order will be made at the end of Week 4, please try on the sample sizes available at the office. Please pay at the time of ordering, thank you.

YEAR 13 LEADERSHIP CAMP A very successful, busy and rewarding couple of days at the schools’ Aquatic Centre.

The main focus' were getting our Year 13’s working together, welcoming our new and Apartments students, preparing for Peer Support and identifying leaders.

The students took part in several entertaining and challenging activities from designing paper clothing to eating interesting things.

I believe that we have another great group of Year 13 students keen to make the most of 2013.

Greg Thomson - Year 13 Dean

SPORTS & CULTURAL FUNDING The Board of Trustee's Maximising Resources Committee (MRC) has funds to provide monetary aid to Cromwell College sporting and cultural teams and individuals who represent the College participating in regional (Otago or wider) or Nation-al tournaments and activities. Please see Tania or the Office for the paper work to apply for this grant. Cromwell College has a Sports Committee that meets once a term, if you are interested in joining this committee please contact Tania or Steve Hodkinson for more details.
