fresh enthusiasm we are sure you will all welcome.
Council is confident that Mr Beckett will come to Trinity

3 Newsletter 10, Week 9, Term 2 24 June 2016
It has been my pleasure this term to have witnessed many Trinity students excel in different areas, be it academic, sport, performance, cultural or community. The success of our students has always made me immensely proud. The way our students represent themselves, the College and the wider Albury-Wodonga community is first rate. Many students received awards at our final assemblies today; these awards acknowledge the way these students have approached their studies and commitment to other College-based activities throughout the term. Well done! I hope all of our students enjoy a restful and safe term break, although Year 12 need to not be as restful as the others. I hope students from Prep/Kinder – Year 10 heed the advice they have been given by their teachers to ensure they return in Semester 2 with enthusiasm and with the goal of making the second half of the year one of which they can all be proud.
Peter O’Neill Deputy Principal
Year 8 and Year 10 Subject Information Evenings & Year 12 Trial HSC Exams
Parents of Year 10 Students: I am sure that our Year 10 students are excited by the
prospect of selecting subjects that capture their interests, enhance their skills and assist
them to pursue a pathway beyond school. This is a reminder that the Subject Information
Evening for Year 11 2017 is taking place early in Term 3 on Monday, 25 July from 7pm in
the Senior School Building. Year 10 students are looking forward to putting their
questions to the many teachers who will be there and have been briefed on the subjects
offered and the processes involved. They have access to an online information booklet
that will assist them in making this important set of decisions. The students will record
their preferences via an online platform and have had the mechanics of this process
outlined to them. It will be great to see as many parents as possible on the night.
Parents of Year 8 Students: Year 8 students have the opportunity to have their questions
about Year 9 subject choices answered at the Year 9, 2017 Subject Information Evening
from 7pm Tuesday 9 August in the Senior School Building. The students have enjoyed
experiences across many different subjects over the last two years and this is their first

opportunity to pursue their interests in the choice of elective subjects. Parents are most
cordially invited to attend the evening with their son or daughter and talk to teachers who
will be keen to provide information about their specialist subjects.
Year 12 Trial HSC Exams: The focus of our Year 12 students is firmly on the Trial
Examination which commences Monday 8 August and concludes Wednesday 17 August.
For all students, these exams figure as significant assessment items that will assist in
determining the assessment component of their final HSC mark. The students are busy
honing their study schedule in order to maximise their results in this important set of
exams. The Trial Examination timetable will be distributed to students early in Term 3.
Year 10-12 Assessment Tasks: Students in Years 10-12 are, generally, engaging with their
continued assessment program in a positive and committed fashion. The momentum
created by the assessment program is powerful and it is important to maintain focus.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents that direct parental
contact is required if a student is unable to submit or undertake an assessment task. The
College understands that illness or misadventure can occur and we have a firm set of
procedures to follow in such instances.
Certainly, in instances of assessment tasks being missed due to planned absences,
students should make contact with me well before the due date so that arrangements can
be made. Failure to do this can incur mark penalties. This is clearly outlined in the
assessment policy documents distributed to students at the outset of the year.
Semester 1 Reports: Kindergarten and Prep to Year 10: Semester 1 reports will be
distributed to students by their classroom teachers (for students in infants and primary
school years) or pastoral care tutors (for students in Years 7-10), on Friday 24 June. These
reports reflect the students’ academic performance across most subject areas, for the past
semester. Classroom teachers and pastoral care tutors also provide broad information on
students’ development in the pastoral care reports.
If you have any queries about any of the matters outlined above, please contact Ms Kym
Armstrong at the College.

As we head to the break it is always a good time to reflect on the Semester. Trinity, like
many educational institutions, has at its core the student and their learning. This can take
many different forms for each individual. The educational research that seems to be at the
forefront of much of our thinking points to the “effect size” of different approaches to
learning. The compilation of much research by John Hattie and associates has been part of
an ongoing debate. Still at the top of all effect lists is “students self-reporting of grades”.
This means the ability of a student to understand their learning and how they perceive
their abilities as they approach a particular task or unit of work. To this end the feedback
to students must be continuous and considered. So, as we approach the reading of reports
it is important to recognise the individual student’s understanding of their expectations of
self and their co-hort. A percentage, grade, mark or critical analysis should never be seen
out of context and the picture needs to be painted by the student for the outcome to
make sense and lead to improvement. In the day to day learning both in the classroom
and beyond the important aspects of enrichment, engagement and extension still sit at
the centre of any model. This also assumes we are enabling resilient learners. These are
the students who are not afraid to make mistakes when confronting something new; the
ones who have thrown away the eraser as they are willing to dive into new knowledge
pools that require different skills and are quite accepting of the set-backs that can occur.
So as we rest, renew and prepare for second semester, try something new, something that
may challenge you and return energised and ready to extend your thinking.
CIS Cross Country: A large contingent of students travelled to Eastern Creek for this event
under the stewardship of Mr Thurling. All competitors made every effort and were very
supportive of their team mates as well as other competitors. Tyra Murray made it through
to the State level with an outstanding performance.
Creative Pursuits: The extensive program completes the second term next week. The
students approached the activities in a positive manner and have learnt many new skills

and have been confronted by new challenges. This is a large undertaking and the support
of all staff and students is appreciated.
Public Speaking: Congratulations to all students who availed themselves of this
opportunity. It was a pleasure for all to listen to the finalists from the Albury Campus.
There were many outstanding aspects to each speech and the preparation was very
evident. The following students will be part of the College Final: Tamsyn Vanderhoek, Zalia
Kelly, Sam Vaccaro, Tyra Murray, Max Neave, Ariel Halford, Ella Brown, Hamish Darmody,
Christina Halford and Cruze Hassgall.

Visit by Principals from the Anglican Schools Commission
Last week our Campus welcomed approximately thirty Principals and Chairs from the
Anglican Schools Commission. They enjoyed a tour of the Campus, and spoke with
students and joined them in enjoying a hot lunch of homemade sausage rolls supplied
through our dedicated team of parent volunteers. The ASC group took the opportunity to
visit classrooms and speak with teachers. The visiting Principals and Chairs were impressed
with our beautiful campus, our respectful and friendly students, our dedicated teachers
and the wonderful hospitality and excellent culinary skills of our parent body! Well done
to all involved.
Junior Public Speaking Finalists
Congratulations to all students for their effort in the Junior Public Speaking Competition.
Students from Years 3-6 were given the opportunity to deliver their speeches, with
finalists chosen from each section to compete against the Albury Campus during Week 9.

number of staff who will be part of their Year 7 experience. Further visits to come,
including Step-Up to Senior School Day on Thursday, 25 August, 2016.
SSV Winter Sport
SSV Winter Sport will continue for the start of Term 3, with a Sports Gala Day to be held on
Friday 29 July at Willow Park. Students will travel to Willow Park by bus and be
accompanied by a member of staff.
Can I express gratitude to all the parents who have assisted with SSV Winter Sport in
whatever capacity but particularly to those who took on the umpiring duties. It is very
much appreciated and we recognise and value the work that has been done.
French Café
What an afternoon Years 3-6 had last Monday, 20 June! Students set up their “cafés” in
the hall adorned with French signs and menus. They bought and sold beautiful French
baked goods from apple tarts to profiteroles, cakes to éclairs, with many a “s’il nous plaît”
and a “merci”. To all the wonderful students and parents who worked so hard to bring the
French Café to life, a very heartfelt “merci”. A very successful afternoon’s buying and
selling also brought in a sizeable donation to the Salvation Army, which is being counted as
this goes to press. To the lovely students of Wodonga, thank you for making me feel so
welcome during my time teaching years 3-6. I will be teaching at Albury two days a week
for the rest of the year and will look forward to seeing any of my Wodonga students who
visit. Warm wishes to my colleagues and students at the incomparable Wodonga campus.

Paul Kelly Cup Regional Final
Sixteen very excited footballers made their way to Robertson Oval in Wagga, for the
Riverina Regional Paul Kelly Cup. Trinity were first cab off the rank against Mater
Dei. We went into the game knowing it was going to be a tough game. Mater Dei
From the Director of Sport & Co-curricular
12 Newsletter 10, Week 9, Term 2 24 June 2016
kicked the first goal of the game and had us on the back foot early. Through the
strong efforts of Fergus Edwards, who played like a man possessed all day, and Seb
Sproule who was working hard in the ruck, we kicked back with a goal of our own.
Archer Chaston gave the team plenty of run and carry off the halfback flank to
create many opportunities for Trinity’s forwards. Kai Braddy and Blake Elliott were
able to finish off with some great goals. Sam Hovar showed plenty of speed around
the contest and finished off his fancy footwork with a couple of goals of his own. We
ran out strong winners in that match 53–32.
After watching our next opposition Deniliquin South PS, it was evident that it would
be another tough match. Ben Ferguson helped his rovers get first use with some great
ruck-work, which Khylan Wright and Ned Satchell just ate up. Toby White worked hard
around the ground and took some great grabs, dishing it off to some of our runners
in Zarlie Goldsworthy and George Flanagan. George continued some of his excellent
CIS form and made it look like there was three of him at times! Drew Brndusic took
some important marks of his own and finished off his hard-work with some great
goals. It was a wonderful team effort that saw us get the result we were after; winning
41-24.
Our final match saw us pitted against St Patrick’s Griffith. We went into this game with
much excitement, knowing a win in this game would see us through to the state final
on the SCG. It was a sluggish start, but our captain, Conor Willis got us on track with
the same desperation and desire that he had shown all day. Lachlan Elgin took a
number of big pack marks and propelled us forward on many occasions. Through a
13 Newsletter 10, Week 9, Term 2 24 June 2016
fantastic collective effort, we again won, 48-20. This means the team will now head
to Sydney on 15 August to play at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
I would like to thank all the players for being great students of the game and playing
in the right spirit. I would also like to thank the parents for their support in driving the
players to the carnival and helping out during the day.

CIS 15 Years AFL – State Champions
The NSW All Schools 15 Years and Under, Boys AFL Championships were held in Albury
starting on Tuesday, 7 June. The College was proudly represented in the Combined
Independent Schools (CIS) team by Darcy Harrington, Sam Cavanough and Mitchell Scott.
On Day 1, CIS were in the same pool as the very strong Combined Catholic South team and
played them first, going down 3-6-24 to 4-3-27. CIS followed this by an overwhelming win
over South Coast CHS 17-3-105 to 1-2-8.
There was a cross-over of pools for the first game of Day 2. CIS had a very strong win over
Northern NSW 8-10-58 to 1-3-9. However, through a twist of fate, Riverina Murray CHS
reversed its form from Day 1 to defeat Riverina SW CHS by a bigger margin, so the best two
teams were set up to face each other in the semi-final, prompting a slight change in the
rules for the future. Combined Catholic South were just a bit better again to defeat CIS 5-7-
37 to 4-2-26.
On the final day of competition, CIS
played off for third and fourth with
Combined Catholic North. CIS were
far too strong for them, winning 5-
10-40 to 0-4-4. Combined Catholic
South went on to win the
Championships. Congratulations to
all CIS players, coach Matt Bedford,
assistant coach Mark Dicketts, and
team manager Daniel Gardner on a
good performance.

Year 5&6 Hoop Time Basketball Tournament – Girls
Trinity is entering into an exciting phase in the College Basketball program. Our first Year
5/6 girl’s representative basketball team participated in the ‘Hoop Time’, Basketball
Victoria development carnival on Tuesday, 14 June at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure
Centre.
The College team began training four weeks ago, each Monday afternoon. This opportunity
allowed all team members to learn about each other and to train hard in preparation for
the carnival. The day was a great occasion for the girls to learn about what it means to play
basketball at a representative level, the importance of a positive attitude as well as showing
total commitment both on and off the court.
The team learnt a lot from this experience and played very well to place runners-up to an
extremely strong St Monica’s team. The day was a massive success with the girls looking
forward to playing again next year. Thank you to Griffin Sowden (Year 9) for helping to score
on the day.
Renee Vanegmond (Coach)
Year 5&6 Hoop Time Basketball Tournament – Boys
The following boys represented the College at the Wodonga based ‘Hoop Time’ on
Tuesday, 14 June: Sebastian Sproule, George Flanagan, Drew Brndusic, Will Roberts, Ben
Ferguson, Toby White, Conor Willis, Fergus Edwards and Fletcher Clarke.
The boys showed enthusiasm and endeavour in the pool games, easily accounting for St
Monica’s #3, Wodonga Primary School #2, and St Monica’s #4. They were narrowly beaten
in a cross-over game against St Monica’s #1. Despite the loss, the boys finished on the top
of their pool. This set up a semi-final game against Wodonga Primary School #1. This game
saw the teams start off by trading goals in the first five minutes. Gradually, the Trinity team
pulled away to a commanding lead and set a Grand Final appearance against a strong
St Monica’s #1 side.
In the grand final game, St Monica’s started fast, scoring the first seven points and held this
lead into the half-time break. The Trinity side put up a great fight, although, turnovers and
missed shots close to goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Thank you Alex Jacobs (Year 9) for helping to score on the day. Thank you also to the many
parents who supported the boys on the day. Lastly, congratulations to all the boys for their
outstanding sportsmanship, positive attitude, effort and enthusiasm.

Victorian College Championships – Basketball; Year 7/8 Girls and Boys
Tuesday, 14 June was a very busy day for the College Basketball program. Trinity was also
represented by a group of enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 boys and girls in the Victorian College
Championships regional round at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The extremely early start did not deter the eagerness of these students, with tip off
scheduled for 10am. Mr O’Neill took charge of our boys’ team, who contested the Year 7/8,
Division 2 competition and Alisha Fielder, College parent coached our Division 1 Girls’ team.
The girls, who were undermanned came up against a strong team from Williamstown High
School #1, initially going down by 12. As the day progressed the team gelled, but
unfortunately went down in their following two games. In their Semi Final, they came up
against eventual winner Williamstown High School #1. The final result demonstrated the
team’s improvement throughout the day.
The versatility of Mr O’Neill’s coaching capacity was again on display, bringing this team of
boys together. In their first match, against the Elwood Lakers, the boys had an 11 point
victory. Their following two pool matches resulted in them being outplayed by
Huntingtower and Elwood Lakers. The boys unfortunately did not proceed any further,
missing out on the Semi Finals.
A big thank you must go to Mrs Fielder and the supportive parents who assisted with
transporting our two College teams.
CIS Cross Country – Primary and Secondary
The CIS Cross Country Championships for Primary and Secondary students was held last
Thursday, 16 June at the Eastern Creek Raceway circuit. A record number of Trinity
students participated in the events throughout the day.
The day consisted of a very positive environment with students cheering on their Trinity
friends and RAS team mates alike. All students performed admirably against the very best
competition from across the State.
Tyra Murray, Year 4 was the performer of the day finishing fifth in her age group which earns
her a spot in the CIS Team to compete again at the same location on Friday, 22 July 2016 in
the NSW AllSchools Competition. Congratulations to all students for their wonderful effort,
spirit and behaviour.

Last Wednesday night, both the SECOA and ECOA groups headed out of town for an
evening of exploration and spotlighting. We made our way to the Granya State Park,
where we explored the Scout Hut while waiting for night fall. On dark, we headed to the
Talgarno Flora and Fauna Reserve spending the next hour spotlighting and inspecting a
reptile monitoring stations. Six possums were spotted in their natural habitat along with a
lizard. Thank-you to all the parents who attended, but we’d especially like to thank Dr
Damian Michael for sharing his expertise and guiding us through the reserve.
Next term, SECOA will start with an alpine focus, as we have tentatively planned for a day
of cross-country skiing on Saturday 6 August. Places will be limited and students wanting
to participate will need to attend the fitness sessions in the weeks leading up to this on
Wednesdays in Week 2 and 3. Week 2 will also be our first session for the term. Further
details on this trip will be available next term.
There will also be many tree planting opportunities in early Term 3, both near the College
and in the wider community. Again more details will be available next term.
