Born in Numurkah and growing up in Katunga Peter is no stranger to the lifestyle along the river. Peter went to school in Katunga before moving to Tongala at the age of 12 and continuing his education at Echuca Technical College. In his teenage years Peter was a very accomplished footballer, winning the Tongala U18’s Best and Fairest. Working in Melbourne Peter elected to come home to ‘Tonny’ and play senior football. Whilst in Melbourne Peter started with Telecom and studied part-time where he gained a Bachelor Degree in Business Studies. The move home coincided with employment opportunities as he commenced work with Nestle Tongala in finance and this took him to Nestle Warrnambool where for 6 years he was the Factory Finance Controller.

Still with Nestle the next move was to Sydney where Peter controlled the finances for all six factories. He then moved onto work for Laminex as Finance Manager and spent 2 years in India with Fletcher Building in Manufacturing and Sales

Business and 1 year in the UK as Finance Controller for the European Branch of the business.

As mentioned earlier Peter is married to Dianne who is a midwife and they have 3 children. Peter’s mum still lives in Tongala and Dianne has relations in Yarrawonga so it was always their wish to get back to this area. So what better place than Cobram Barooga on the banks of the Murray to settle down again. When the position at the Sporties came up it all seemed logical for Peter to apply.

Peter enjoys watching all sports particularly the AFL and he was a very good tennis player who now plays occasional golf. He has a double Masters Degree in International Business and International Relations.

His first impressions of Cobram Barooga are very positive. He loves the river, we are close to everything – not far from Melbourne, although small in size he says the twin towns have all we need with excellent sporting and recreational facilities.

THE BAROOGA SPORTS CLUB EXTENDS A WARM WELCOME TO NEWLY APPOINTED CHIEF FINANCE OFFICER PETER CARTER TO THE MANAGEMENT TEAM. PETER AND WIFE DIANNE ARE RETURNING TO THE MURRAY VALLEY AREA WHERE LIFE FOR PETER FIRST BEGAN.

In relation to his new position he sees his main challenges at the Sporties as;

• Getting familiar with the existing accounting system.

• Investigating opportunities to grow the business, expand and diversify on what we presently do without solely relying on gaming revenue.

• Re-establish the Sporties as the entertainment centre of the Murray Valley.

• Focus on the younger generation of Members.

• Maximise Members benefits.

Peter said he has found the staff very capable and committed and he plans to be here for the ‘long haul’ to see the Clubs prosper into the future.

Students get outside and learn through play Local students spent a day learning in the sun and developing mindfulness and resilience at a special day hosted by the Bluearth program.

Using movement as a vehicle, the Bluearth approach assists student development in the behavioural, emotional, social, physical and academic domains.

Cobram Primary, Jerilderie and Berrigan Public Schools, Bluearth and Sporties Barooga staff spent a morning doing activities at Barooga Recreation Reserve last month to help teach them teamwork, cooperation and more.

Katamatite Primary School and St Columbus in Berrigan are also part of the program, but were not able to be present on the day.

Cobram Primary School captains and Year 6 students Isaac Crawford and Zoe O’Toole said it was great to get outside and get active.

“We’ve played ‘everyone’s it’ and a few other games,” Zoe said. “It’s great because we’ve got to meet and work with students from other schools.” “It’s a good way to get outside and get active and work on teamwork,” Isaac said.

Year 6 student from Jerilderie Public School Travis Lawton said he thought it was great the students got to learn new things.

“We’ve been doing self-umpiring and you get to meet new people,” he said.

Berrigan Public School Year 6 student Nikita Willemsen said she enjoyed the activities that were planned.

“I got really energetic and it was a lot of fun,” she said.

Barooga Sports Club has committed $40 000 over two years from 2016-18 to the Bluearth Active School Program to support its works with local students.

The Bluearth Active School Program involves development programs for teachers and students that encourage selfawareness, self-confidence and self-responsibility through physical activity.

The program for students encompasses co-ordination and movement through participation, rather than competition.

Students learn skills and building blocks designed to enhance resilience and wellbeing.

Programs can also be used to develop the social and emotional skills of students, with a focus on leadership, resilience and peer support.

Sporties Barooga chief of operations, Anton Noble said they were pleased to be able to work with Bluearth.

“We’re proud to be able to support a program that makes a positive impact, not only the students, but the teachers, with programs that can improve physical and emotional health and wellbeing,” Mr Noble said.

Bluearth regional co-ordinator Matt Dillon said partnerships such as this helped Bluearth expand its vision of a healthy active nation.

“We thank the Barooga Sports Club for its commitment to Bluearth and the local community,” Mr Dillon said.

What lead you to choosing your present occupation? I like getting up early and working outdoors.

What facets of your job do you love? All aspects except extremes in weather.

What parts of your job don’t you like? Very cold mornings and very hot afternoons.

If you could be any animal in the world what would you be and why? A kangaroo on our Golf Course. They’re not threatened by anyone (except Tony) and have a great environment.

Who do you or who did you admire most in the world? Bill Gates Why? He’s a very wealthy, smart but generous man.

What sort of kid were you at High School? Very active, loved sport, perhaps a bit naughty!

How do you enjoy your free time away from work? Mowing my daughters lawn, watching sport, catching up with family and relaxing with my grandchildren.

What is your favourite food dish? Steak Can you cook it? Yes, well done.

What is the most interesting thing about you that very few know? I’m quite generous and I can cook anything.

What is your favourite holiday destination in Australia? Bright

What do you like about it? It is nice all year round.

What would be your ultimate job of your choice? Border Security

If you were to be Prime Minister of Australia for one day and you could make one defining decision, what would it be? Make everyone’s superannuation the same as politicians, so everyone could enjoy retirement free from financial worries.

What lead you to choosing your present Occupation? I was seeking part time work at the time. I’m still here 15 years later!

What facets of your job do you love? I love meeting new people and welcoming them to our Club. I have made many friends and acquaintances in my time here on both sides of the counter. It is also gratifying watching the school leavers come to us and follow their various long term career paths.

What parts of your job don’t you like? I enjoy all aspects of my job. The only thing I would say I don’t like is not being able to give our customers a great experience (Which doesn’t happen often)

If you could be any animal in the world what would you be and why? I would choose to be a cat – everything own your own terms! Someone to look after you when you need it – not a worry in the world.

Who do you or who did you admire most in the world? Definitely my Mum and Dad Why? They gave me the grounding to tackle life’s challenges and very importantly my children who ultimately give me much pride, love and support .

What sort of kid were you at High School? Very quiet and lacking confidence! I didn’t really like school much – but have always loved learning! (a bit of a contradiction)

How do you enjoy your free time away from work? Spending time with my family. Seeing my children and my grandchildren at every opportunity.

What is your favourite food dish? Hmmm, that’s a hard one! Certainly roast pork is one of my absolute favourites. Can you cook it? Yes, but it is better if someone else cooks it for me.

What is the most interesting thing about you that very few know? I am not very confident and get very nervous when going to events or functions.

What is your favourite holiday destination in Australia? I do love Mildura. But I would say that I just love road tripping and seeing as many different places as possible. We have such a diverse landscape and history. It is all amazing.

What would be your ultimate job of your choice? Now, I think my ultimate job would have to be a ‘Fulltime Granny’

If you were to be Prime Minister of Australia for one day and you could make one defining decision, what would it be? Wow! Where to start? Create some equity in the superannuation and benefits paid to politicians in comparison to other working Australians. Make the super wealthy and big businesses pay their share of taxes!

If you were to be Prime Minister of Australia for one day and you could make one defining decision, what would it be? On a serious note – I would love to be able to make it easier for young Aussies to be able to own their own homes.

What lead you to choosing your present occupation? I chose hospitality because my very first job was in a Milk Bar and that’s where I found I was happy with meeting people and I have always been a ‘Peoples Person’.

What facets of your job do you love? Chatting with patrons and seeing a smile on their faces.

What parts of your job don’t you like? When there is a pile of dirty plates and I can’t get to them!

Bowlers GiveThey may be small in numbers but they are big on giving! The Sporties Wednesday afternoon Bowls Club have again made a significant donation to a worthy group.

Each Wednesday of the year at 1:30pm around 12 indoor bowlers gather to not only bowl but to also enjoy the social companionship of each other. This Club is now in its 22nd year and each 6 months makes a donation of $500 to a volunteer organisation. On this occasion it is the Cobram SES who will benefit from the Clubs generosity.

After passing over the latest cheque the Club has now donated close on $20,000 since its inception. Many different charities , nursing homes and the local hospital have received

funds from this Clubs kind contributions.

Bowls Club Treasurer Mrs. Val Marks said “Bowls provides a great outing for lots of people to come together and socialise. The fact that we can do what we enjoy and at the same time hand over money to the likes of the SES who do a great job for our community makes it very satisfying”.

On accepting the cheque Cobram SES treasurer Mrs. Carrie Hawke said the Club was very thankful for the donation. “This money will go into our building fund and help to build our new facility where we can meet and store our equipment“ said Mrs. Hawke.

Congratulations to this ‘small’ Club which gives ‘big’!
