Liston College’s Special Character Statement
This is what the Lord asks of you
“Act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8
Dear Parents and Caregivers As we come to the end of a very busy and long – 12 week – term, I want to take this opportunity to bring you up-to-date with some of the initiatives which have been introduced and to inform you of some up-coming events.
Teaching and Learning:
When we re-structured the way we plan the teaching of Year 7 & 8 students, we established an additional level of leadership within the College. In the core subjects of English, Mathematics, R.E., Social Studies and Science we now have an Assistant to the Head of Department of each of these subjects to assist in improving teaching and learning at Years 7 – 9. While the HoD is responsible for the overall performance of staff and students within the Department, the Assistant has a significant role to play in helping to improve teaching and learning in Years 7 – 9. This year the key objective is to review the curriculum at Years 7 & 8 to ensure it meets the learning needs of the students. At the same time we will ensure that the appropriate assessment enables students to receive effective feedback to improve their learning. Once we have completed this, we will carry out the same exercise for Years 9 & 10.
At the beginning of the term I published the latest NCEA achievement data for Liston College and I am sure you will share my pleasure in the overall results. The Board and Staff are now working to improve the results further. We are committed to improve the overall pass rate in NCEA – and this becomes more difficult as you move past 90%. However, we accept this challenge as well as the drive to improve the rates of endorsement for both Merit and Excellence at all three levels.
Maori Achievement:
One of the recommendations from last year’s ERO report was to find ways to ensure that Maori students experience success as Maori. Currently our Maori students achieve success at the level of all students and this is especially pleasing. The Board and the Staff are committed to implementing the principles of Ka Hikitia which is a Ministry of Education initiative aimed at helping schools to engage more effectively with Maori students and their families. The staff have already begun the process of understanding the principles and applying them in their every-day teaching. We have a series of Professional Development activities planned for next term including a whole staff visit to a Marae. While the purpose of the programme is aimed specifically at Maori achievement, the principles of it apply to all students and will help to raise overall student achievement.
Special Character Review:
Next term we will have our Special Character Review which will be conducted by Sr. Sian Owen on behalf of the Auckland Catholic Diocese. The review will take place from 18th – 20th June. This is an opportunity for us to highlight the many aspects of the College which demonstrate the development of the Catholic Character of Liston College. This review will also enable us to reflect on how we can enhance the Special Character.

This was the multisport tournaments 20th and final year. Liston College 1st XI Football squad has won the Senior Boys Football Competition of the tournament in 2001, 2004, 2005 & 2012. This year the Senior Boys Football Competition had 3 groups of 6 schools in each group. Each group played a round robin of games. Liston won all 5 games in our group but lost out on goal difference and ended the tournament playing off for 3rd/4th place vs Kerikeri High School. Excellent tournament over the years and will be sadly missed by all future 1st XI Football players.

QUALITY CATHOLIC BOYS’ EDUCATION In the Edmund Rice Tradition
LETTER TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS From Henderson Police
This is just a quick message to let you all know about the changing to the train sys-tem within Auckland. New electric trains will soon be running throughout Auckland with our nearest one running through Sturges Road and Pooks Road.
With the electric trains come the electric wires that are overhead. These wires will carry 25,000 volts which is 100 times more powerful than electricity used in homes and is fatal upon touching them.
The issue I am concerned about is that I have witnessed many students from all nearby schools cutting across the tracks as shortcuts. With the new system when in place, the electricity can arc out (jump out) across the gaps. So, if you are within a certain distance or anything you may be carrying, you could still get electrified. The electricity can also be carried through water, so if someone pours water onto any of the live wires the electricity will travel though that water straight into the person holding it. I will also mention here that the new trains will be much quieter than the ones we already use.
It is illegal to walk across the train tracks, however the safety of the children is what is worrying me.
KiwiRail have some very good information pamphlets if you require further information also NZTA web-site has good information on train safety. www.kiwirail.co.nz
Please ensure that if you think your child can use the tracks to cross as a shortcut and just in general for safety information to them, tell them about this new system.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
