Vegetable proteins are playing an increasingly important role in our diet. The percentage of the population

that has specific nutritional requirements is growing, including not only vegetarians and vegans but also

“flexitarians”, meaning people who give some consideration to the welfare of animals and eat meat with high

quality. In contrast to animal proteins such as meat, gelatin, milk and egg products, plant proteins present a much better ecological

balance.

The most well-known plant proteins are soy and wheat, but the importance of pea proteins is steadily in-creasing around the world, also with regards to Non-GMO and allergen-free requirements. The

® Emsland Group can now serve all of these trends with the new pea protein isolate Empro E 86 ® and Empro E 86 HV.

The areas of application are diverse. The Emsland Group has entered into a partnership with

the company AMIDORI for wet extrusion in the field of meat alternatives. Customers, agents

and employees were personally able to try and see for themselves the quality of these pro-

ducts during the symposium when AMIDORI presented its products with its food truck in the

main factory in Emlichheim.

The Emsland Group has already enlarged the production of pea protein isolate for this cam-

paign at the Emlichheim plant. A continuous expansion for the further years is also planned.

EquipmentAt the heart of 'Emsland Innovation Germany' is the innovative equipment that allows the R&D team

to manufacture products in pilot scale and show the effect of the various formula components or

process parameters. Emsland Group expects this equipment to provide important insights when

using different products and optimizing end products under practically conditi-

tion facility are already supplied by this manufacturer. For a pilot drum dryer, 2it has a particularly large drying surface area of 1.57 m .

RegulationsNew draft regulation for biodegradable flocculants

The Emsland Group invites its global agencies to a mutual exchan-

Some changes may come into effective with the examination of the "Second Regulation on the

Amendment of the Fertilizer Ordinance" by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BMEL).

To this, starch will now be included in the Fertilizer Ordinance (DüMV). A labeling requirement

for fertilizers containing synthetic polymers should come into effect as well – however starch is exempt from a labeling requirement.stAs of January 1 , 2018, a freight regulation for synthetic polymers will be in force. This stipulates that the application rate for synthetic

polymer slurries is limited to 15 kg WS/ha per year*. For many sewage plant operators, an additional incentive system has been cre-®ated in order to build on our biodegradable flocculants. Our Emfloc products have proven in numerous tests that they can either

partially or wholly replace the polyacrylamide content in the sewage sludge in pure form as well as in mixtures with synthetic poly-®mers. Moreover, the introduction of the freight regulation would open up further interesting opportunities for placing Emfloc on the mar-

ket for a wider range of potential users.

®Further clean label products from the Empure line

Projects® ®The success story of our Empure Clean Label products continues with the new development of Empure

AKJEL 200 (F 10588) for use in baked snacks.

These snacks are very trendy since they are not fried like traditional potato snacks and therefore contain

a much lower fat content.®Empure AKJEL 200 (F10588) offers the following advantages:

Homogeneous controlled water retention

Uniform and homogeneous dough formation and elasticity

Controlled adhesive behavior

Execellent shaping and cutting behavior

Controlled expansion

Crispy light texture

Alternative to waxy maize-based products

Symposiumth stFrom August 29 through August 31 , 2016, the Emsland Group held its sixth international

ge of information

symposium, this time in Emlichheim (workshops) and Ootmarsum (presentations).

In addition to the knowledge gained from the theoretical parts, the approxi-

mately 140 participants in the new innovation center in Emlichheim, ‘Emsland

Innovation Germany‘, were able to gain a comprehensive picture of the latest de-

velopments from Emsland. This year's symposium focused on the fields of snacks,

cheese applications, and confectionery as well as on technical applications in theareas of adhesives and building additives.

Special thanks go out to all employees of Innovation!

Expansion of the Pea Outer Fiber product line in the area of animal nutrition

ProjectsIn order to meet the requirements of the animal feed industry (livestock and pets), there are, in addition to

®the Empet E5 B10, now two further grinding stages in the following product ranges of the Emsland Group:® ®Empet E5 B40 as poultry feed and Empet E5 B8 for pet feed wet-canned area.

Three different standard grinding processes for pea outer fibers can now be offered.

Fibers are used in many segments of the animal feed

industry and are of particular importance from the nutritional-physiological point of view since they help maintain the normal functioning of the gastrointesti-nal tract. The pea fibers have a high swelling capa- city and thus ensure a quick feeling of satiety in the animals. This is to be assessed positively, particu-

larly in the case of feeding overweight animals.

Moreover, the fibers are easy to process because they have good miscibility with other products.
