School Council Report

The most recent school council meeting was held on the 11th November and welcomed the newly appointed School Captains for 2020 – Charlie Hickey (8D) and Bhupali Pylla (8E). Outgoing School Captain, Margaret Salesulu, gave a Junior School Council report to discuss all of the initiatives that student leadership are involved with and the successful year that both Margaret and Joy Raval (Joint School Captain) had experienced leading the college. Assistant Principal, Lisa Foster, shared the updated school policies relating to Camps & Excursions and Inclusion &

Diversity. The college is currently updating their existing policies in many areas and these will be presented to school council in the future so they can be read and endorsed. One of our current Year 7 Coordinators, Stewart Wilson, presented the documents associated with the Year 7 Camp that will be taking place at Ocean Grove in February, 2020. Stewart discussed the curriculum links to Science and Marine Biology, as students visit the Marine Discovery Centre and explore the rock pools to view the marine species that can be found at low tide. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Queenscliff Fort and participate in mini-golf, as well as bush/beach walking and discovery. Our Spanish Teacher, Tania Fota, presented a wonderful opportunity that will see students in Years 8 and 9 in 2020 be able to travel to Spain and stay in a Boarding School on a cultural exchange. Students have already been given the chance to express interest in the trip and there will be upcoming interviews to determine which students might be successful in participating. We also have the privilege of hosting some Year 9 Spanish students in 2020 for a month. There will be more information given to ask for families who speak English at home and are interested in hosting a Spanish student. The school Council members celebrated the success of our students in NAPLAN and were shown how the majority of our 2019 Annual Implementation Plan targets for NAPLAN were achieved by the students in Years 3, 5 and 7, with Year 9 students’ results improving on last year’s cohort of students. The results of the Stu-dents’ Attitudes to School and the Par-ents’ Opinion Survey were also shared and it was pleasing to see that our re-sults are above similar schools in our Network. The college is in the process of setting our goals and targets for the 2020 Annual Implementation Plan.

Year 7 —Year 9 STEM Learning

On the 12th of November the Secondary Robotics team competed in the First LEGO League competition in the Wantirna Regional district. We went to the Swinburne University campus in Wantirna and worked in the Knox Innovation, Opportunity and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC). The team completed a series of challenges such as the robot games, robot design judgement, core values judgement and the research project.

The Trug Squad 19 (LEGO Engineers) were on a very tight schedule on the day and worked diligently to prepare for each of their tasks. The hard work paid off when we won the Strategy and Innovation Award for the robot design component of the competition. I hope that next year’s team will be able to learn and progress even further than we did this year. Well done to Joshua Espina, Aayan Haq, Musad Ali Mir, Parsa Najarian, Abdullah Sheikh and Nikhilendhra Pailimeedi for all the weeks of hard work they did in STEM club! Thank you to Mr Sheil and Ms Yurukoff for running afterschool STEM Club and coaching the team on the day to showcase their talent.

Winners are Grinners!

Year 7—Year 9 STEM Learning Continued...

Tahsina Taib College STEM Captain Hanifa Yurukoff STEM Leader and Classroom Teacher

On Tuesday the 29th of October, 9A, 9B and 9C attended an excursion as part of their STEM learning and investigation for their learning task. We were taken on a guided walking tour of Melbourne to learn about the technological and historical developments of our great city. We investigated how much it has changed in the last hundred years and how the founders of Melbourne like John Batman significantly contributed to its development. We made our way through the city to visit places like Hosier Lane, Federation Square, China Town and the Block Arcade a Victorian historic building, where we got to try some Haigh’s Australian made chocolate. Haigh’s was in fact one of the first stores to open in 1915. We concluded our guided tour at Melbourne Central one of the more modern architecturally designed buildings that has the iconic 20 story high glass cone and houses the heritage listed ‘Coops Shot Tower’, a bullet making facility designed in 1889. The day was a valuable learning experience, as we were able to develop our ‘street smarts’ and confidence in using public transport as well as identify why our city is one of the most liveable cities in the world and further develop our understanding of how to make our city more sustainable in the fight against global warming. Thank you to Ms Yurukoff, Ms O’Callaghan, Mr James and Mr Doig for supporting us on the day.

Year 1 Melbourne Zoo Excursion 29th, 30th and 31st October 2019

Did you know that the shingleback lizards are herbi-vores? That means they only eat plants. During our ex-cursion to the zoo, some of us have learnt that the shin-gleback lizards not only eat flowers, berries and leaves but they also consume insects.

The Year 1s became wild explorers for the day learning about what makes animals special and meeting many along the way. The hot weather did not stop their excitement as they ‘look up, look down, look all around’. Apart from seeing all the animals and learning lots of information, there were many opportunities for hands on fun. They engaged all their senses and exercised their enquiring minds to learn what makes animals special and uncover animals’ features, habitats, life-cycles and what they need to survive.

Year 2 Student Voice Box

Students have started voicing their opinions about books, topics, interests and wonderings to contribute to Year 2 curriculum planning. Year 2 students have shared ideas, such as “I think we should write narratives again in writing and more reviews!” and “In Humanities I think we should write weather forecasts.” Student voice acknowledges that students have unique perspectives on learning, teaching, and schooling, and should have the opportunity to actively shape their own education. This is a great opportunity for students to share their ideas and perspectives to influence lesson planning. The way it works is one ‘Student Voice Box’ is located in each building and this rotates throughout the year 2 classrooms. This gives all Year 2 students a chance to contribute. Not all ideas will be able to be incorporated into planning, but it gives teachers a better understanding of what students think.

Year 4 Writing Learning Intention We are learning to draft, revise, edit and publish persuasive letters. Success Criteria I know I am successful when I can: • Use the required features for a persuasive letter. • Plan, draft, revise and edit my work. • Use a variety of persuasive devices. • Work on my personal writing goals. • Use clear and neat handwriting when publishing. In Grade 4 we have been learning about persuasive writing. This week our topic was to write a persuasive letter to Mrs Crowle about anything we wanted to see changed in our school.

Maths at Home Maths is an essential part of any child’s life and making maths fun at home is not as hard as you think! It can be easier for children to understand maths concepts when they relate it to something real and see it as part of everyday life. Here are some ideas of how you can incorporate maths outside of school:

Explore the Everyday maths In the outdoors When walking, talking, looking and listening, you can explore and use mathematics every day. Introduce children to maths in the outdoors by counting steps, finding numbers and shapes and mapping your path. Around the house You can use a range of household objects to explore and discover numbers, measurement, patterns and shapes. Discover new ways of creating learning opportunities without leaving your home. Try cooking together with your children, have them weigh or calculate the total number of ingredients. At the supermarket Shopping is a regular activity that can help children explore mathematical ideas that are both simple and complex. Young learners can help to find items on the shopping list, look for interest-ing shapes or numbers, or talk about the size or weight of things. Try using the scales to meas-ure fruits and vegetables or go discount shopping! What can you buy to make the most out of your money?

One of the homework tasks was to transform a ‘net’ for a rectangular prism into a piece of bedroom furniture. 4D students Alexis Tagala and Vidisha Kumar made very detailed responses. Alexis made a desk with books and a desk lamp and Vidisha made a bed with bedheads, sheets and clock. Both girls were creative with these respons-es and constructed their items with the utmost care.
