Premier’s Teachers Scholarship Award

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the NSW Premier’s Scholarship presentation at the State Library, where I was thrilled to see Kat McDonogh receive the History Teachers Association Scholarship for 2016-17. Kat will travel to America and Canada to undergo research related to one of her particular areas of interest in History. I spoke to one of the selection panel, who was high in his praise of her application, who said it was exceptional. We are very pleased for her and look forward to seeing the work she will do related to the research next year. Each year the Premier awards approximately 21 scholarships in NSW for a number of areas. This year, over 300 teachers, from across all sectors, applied and Kat was one of those recipients. This is a fabulous achievement for one of our fantastic teachers. Thank you to our SASS staffThank you to our SASS staffThank you to our SASS staff

I want to acknowledge the wonderful work done by our School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS). This week has been SASS Recognition Week and we sincerely thank our office ladies, School Learning and Support Officers, our IT support person ,GA and Agriculture Assistant for the enormous contributions they make to our school community. This team are integral to the school. They ensure the smooth running of all things administrative, support for students and staff, (both in the Support Unit and in mainstream classes), technology support, maintenance and efficient management of the farm. A monstrous thank you to them all. We could not do it without you. Janine Debenham, Principal

Probus Debating

“Would the election of Donald Trump be bad for Australia-United States relations?” This was the hotly debated topic on 23 August, as teams from Kincumber High School and Green Point Christian College participated in the final of the 23rd Annual Kincumber Probus Club Debate. We had previously been victorious in the previous round, against Central Coast Grammar School. The Kincumber High Team, made up of Elizabeth Payne, Jasper Davies, Jarred Wright and Connor O'Heir were arguing the negative, and had to bring together all their years of debating knowledge, as well as significant knowledge of the American and Australian political systems in order to become victorious for the second year running. This debate topic took significant preparation, and public speaking and debating coordinator, Sarah Keeling commends these students for their hard work and dedication to extra curricular activities in their senior years. The Leonard Mutton Shield will reside in the front office.

Agriculture and Primary Industries Report

Winter Feed Crop

During Term 2, Year 9 and 10 Agriculture students learnt about the winter feed gap that occurs on most farms in NSW. It is brought about by the slow growth of the dominant, naturalised grass in our area, kikuya, due to colder winter weather. To close the feed gap, the students planted a crop of barley and annual ryegrass, which grows well in winter.

Everyone was a little surprised to see the nice bright green grass and now understand farmers either have to plant winter grasses to provide enough feed for their sheep and cattle, or buy in expensive hay.

This was a great learning exercise for our students.

Triplets are on the way. Maybe?

Everyone is waiting for the imminent birth of Beatrice’s lamb or lambs. Last year, she gave birth to triplets and looks like she will do it again. She is in our farm’s nursery pen, and being pampered by many students.

Lamb Halter Training

This year’s drop of lambs, currently standing at five, are being trained to walk on leads. Lamb training is a time consuming process, involving a lot of perseverance, and food rewards, for doing the right thing. The quieter the lambs become, the easier it is for the students to complete the necessary health practices in the future. These include shearing, crutching, drenching, vaccinations and necessary health checks.

First Peas Sighted

The pea crop is progressing well with the first pea pods sighted this week. Students have counted their flowers and have checked the health of the plants. One student group counted 27 flowers and are well on the way to reaching their $10M harvest target.

Meet Johnno, the Rabbit

This week the school farm had a visit from Johno, the rabbit. If all goes well the next batch of young bunnies will be seen on the school farm when the students arrive back for Term 4. The last batch of bunnies has now been fostered into the KHS community, and are enjoying a peaceful life.

Year 9 & 10 Netball

On Friday 26 August the Year 9 & 10 Girls Netball Team competed at the Sydney North Netball Gala Day at Adcock Park. The girls represented the school well, exhibiting sportsmanship, determination and teamwork,

winning four of their seven games. The team included Alyssa Riding, Brittony Lerway, Macey Bright, Ruby Swanston, Millee Powell, Teagan Powell, Zoe Kensell and Casey Taylor. The girls had a great day and were a pleasure to coach. A special mention is required for Hannah Myers who did a fantastic job umpiring on the day, and also to Macey Bright who shot like a champion after joining the team last minute due to illness and injury affecting the team. Mr Fortey also deserves a big thank you for driving the mini bus.

DANCE NEWS

Congratulations to Year 12 Dance! You have survived the practical HSC Dance examinations – what a fantastic achievement. As the end of term 3 quickly approaches, it is important that you focus now on the Appreciation component, refining your understanding of the two set works. Remember you can submit draft essays anytime!

The Year 9 Dance elective class performed beautifully at the Central Coast Schools Showcase, held at Laycock St Theatre last week. It was also great to see Samantha and Kaia perform as part of the NAISDA Company and Zoe, Ella, Samantha, Emily and Molly perform as part of the Central Coast Regional Senior Ensemble again. We have some exceptionally talented dancers at KHS.

Thank you to Kaia and Molly from Year 9 dance, for creating a dance item and performing it at Avoca Beach, Copacabana, Kincumber and Pretty Beach Primary Schools as part of the Kincumba Learning Community transition program.

There has been an account set up at the front office for dancers to pay for a CCDF DVD – if you would like to order a DVD, PLEASE make sure you see Mrs McRae and hand in a DVD order form, with the year group you are in and the name of your item. It would be great if orders can be made by the end of this term please.

Year 7 dancers – have you joined the dance group with Ms Dutton yet??? If you haven’t, please see her in the PE staffroom to find out more information.

Mrs McRae & Ms Dutton, Dance Teachers

Drama News This week students and teachers have been flat out preparing for the 2016 musical Hey There Delilah. I would just like to say, it has been an absolute pleasure working on this production. It is not everyday that you can work collaboratively on a project with students across a variety of Years and see them take on new and diverse roles, push the levels of their comfort zones by either taking on a challenging role or learning complex routine or song. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful work of all the staff here at Kincumber High School that have assisted in getting the show off the ground; making props and costumes, rehearsing with the students, building and painting our sets, providing rehearsal spaces, selling the tickets, taking extra lessons, supervising students and supporting the show! Show dates are 1 & 2 September and tickets are $5 at the door. Would love to see you there, supporting our wonderful students in this theatrical adventure!

Visual Arts and Photography News

Yesterday we participated in a State wide virtual excursion (we shared this experience with many schools across the State) where we visited Wendy Sharpe in her studio space. Wendy Sharpe is a high profile expressive figurative painter who has been the first female official Australian War Artist in East Timor. Her main focus is oil paint and she introduced us to oil sticks. She showed us her travel diaries in which she had drawn scenes in gouache. We were able to ask questions and learn from her successful art career.

From Science

Throughout the past two weeks as part of Science Week, (which has the theme of Drones, Droids and Robots) students looked at the use of drones to make observations of hazardous areas or environments. To get an understanding of the skill needed to fly a drone, students were given the task of flying one through the goal posts and landing on a target.

We also looked at automated cars and how they work. Some classes have been building programmable robots that can follow lines and avoid obstacles. They have almost finished the construction phase of the project and are about to start programing them.
