I am proud to report that the first half of 2011 was strong and all of our events were a great success. The board, associate board and staff have worked together with our community of donors to positively impact our organization in all areas. At the club level we increased our average daily attendance and have continued to increase capacity and impact within our members. We have had some staff changes at the club level, and have taken the opportunity to improve and promote from within. Carla Carpentier has done an outstanding job managing our Human Resources Department and has focused on staff training and development. Speaking of training, we had our first ever joint staff/board training that was part of our Advanced Leadership Training Program through BGCA. It was an enlightening experience for all. I want to thank staff for their commitment to the process of continuous improvement and collaborative effort which will help ensure stability for our organization well into the future. I also want to thank board members, Lori Niederlehner and Tom Robertson for their leadership in presenting the section, “A Teachable Point of View”. This day of training was a terrific opportunity for staff to interact with board members on multiple levels, as all staff and board members who attended can attest to. Thank you to EVERYONE who participated. Our 2010 financial audit came back 100% clean, as expected. This was great news. A very big thank you to the finance committee for all their hard work during this audit period. Overall the organization is fiscally strong, and we continue to work on increasing our impact with evidence based outcomes for our members. We continue to partner with other organizations on programs, activities and funding for our kids. Our strategy of awareness of who we are vs. familiarity with what we do has made a significant impact on our messaging and our fundraising abilities. I want to highlight what a tremendous job all staff has been doing. Morale is high and we are making great things happen every day for the 7,000 kids we serve at our six clubhouses. Featured Supporters

While it is impossible to thank all of our generous supporters in one newsletter, I’d like to make special

mention of several donors who have made a significant difference in the lives of our kids this year, and

have helped us rebuild many programs in our six clubhouses:

Rollin For Ninos BGCT is grateful to the Rollin for Ninos Foundation (Dan Nentl, Greg Geile, Daren Lowry, Sean Feeney, Eric Geile,

Matt Bollinger, and Bob Geile) for their continued support of our basketball leagues. The foundation stepped up

with a 5 year, $50,000 per year commitment to reinstate basketball at all Tucson clubhouses. With the addition of

the leagues, there has also been an increase in youth participating in technology, literacy, arts, and healthy lifestyle

programming over the past year. The foundation, which is its own 501 (c) (3), raises funds through private donations

and wonderful special events. Please help support this great organization, which supports our kids! For more information, visit rollinforninos.com

The Davis Family Foundation and the Wolslager Foundation Through major gift commitments, these loyal supporters have enabled the BGCT to strategically plan enrichment

programs and staff development beyond the current fiscal year. These foundations identify with the importance of

multi-year commitments and it is our goal to secure more long term commitments emulating the pledges of these two

dedicated foundations.

Angel Charity for Children, Inc.The members of Angel Charity for Children have committed $350,000 for the complete renovation of the Roy

Drachman Clubhouse, which is in dire need of major repairs to all areas of the facility. The project is set to begin

in early September, with R&L Builders as the general contractor, and we are thankful for Angel Charity’s amazing

commitment to our kids. To learn more about Angel Charity for children, visit angelcharity.org

Media PartnershipsThanks you to all of our major supporters in the local media. Just to name a few of our most dedicated partners:

KVOA and Bill Shaw, Clear Channel Radio, Cox, Comcast and Comcast Cares Foundation, Good News Radio,

Tucson Lifestyle, BizTucson, Desert Leaf, TNI, Many Hats Advertising, and especially Georgia Lacy of Geo

Advertising and Marketing for all of the support in helping to communicate our message throughout the community!

On May 11, Board Members and Community Leaders came out in

record number – nearly 200 of them – to learn more about the Boys

& Girls Clubs of Tucson and raise over $220,000 in the process. The

goal of the morning event was to inspire attendees to become involved

in our movement by volunteerism, helping communicate our message

to others, and through financial contributions.

Our wonderful breakfast co-chairs, Chris and Nathan Serrano and

Kelly and Lute Olson welcomed a perfect mix of newcomers and

past supporters for delicious food provided by the Flores Family /

El Charro, and inspirational club member stories of triumph over

adversity. Jim Click even showed up in his biking gear after a long

ride to make sure that our kids knew how close to his heart they have

always been and will always be.

Guests listened to the life story of 15 year old citywide Youth of

the Year winner, Arreana Robles, who courageously recounted her

experience of poverty, abuse, and emotional turmoil within her family.

Arreana credits the staff and her friends at the Jim and Vicki Click

Clubhouse with keeping her on the path to becoming a productive

and positive adult. In addition to Arreana’s story, a video was shown

featuring former club member Vila Sisamout. Vila, now 35 with a child

of her own, is a graduate of the University of Phoenix and has become

a small business owner. If you have not had a chance to view her

video, please visit:

The support of our generous donors enables the Boys & Girls Clubs of

Tucson the opportunity to help thousands of kids each year. Staff and

club members wish to thank each and every one of our contributors!

John McDowellClubhouse News

As of July 1, 2011 our clubhouses are nutritionally sound. As a part of a grant

project funded by the American Recovery Act and Reinvestment Act of 2009

(ARRA) awarded to Pima County Health Department for a 2 year period; the Boys

& Girls Clubs of Tucson has been mandated to create a food policy within the

clubhouses that model healthy behaviors and provide a positive example to the club

and community members. As of July 1, 2011 vending machines selling carbonated,

full- calorie sugar sweetened beverages have been replaced with zero-calorie

water, juices, etc. Our snack bars which once offered various snacks heavy laden

with excessive amounts of fat and calories, are now being stocked with healthy food

options provided by Sunflower Markets

July 29th marks the end of summer for our clubhouses. The clubs will remain closed

for the entire month of August. During this time staff will be taking much needed

vacations and the buildings will be prepped for the upcoming school year session.

The Annual Staff Retreat will

take place August 18-19 at our

Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse. During

this time valuable staff training

will take place to include part-

time staff as well.

We also will be recognizing

those mentors who took

part in our mentor program

throughout the program year.

Our 20th Annual Steak & Burger Dinner on June 11 at the Tucson Convention Center was a resounding success! With a guest list of over 550, the 2011 Co-Chairs, Spanky Nanna and Ben Lorenzen, along with the committee led one of this years most talked about events. The committee worked with the Clubhouses to bring back a classic table centerpiece and the décor was beautiful. The addition of a DJ for the kids provided by X level DJ’s, hi-tech lighting provided by 5th Avenue Productions, and a great raffle supported by many of our Board Members kept the 120 Club Kids entertained and engaged. UA Head Football Coach Mike Stoops served as our host and UA Head Women’s Basketball Coach Niya Butts rounded out the night with an inspirational speech for our kids. Pima Federal Credit Union presented our Tucson Citywide Youth of the Year, Arreana Robles, with an additional scholarship and laptop computer and all of our clubhouse Youth of the Year recipients were awarded scholarships at Pima Community College. Mary and Rusty Garrett were awarded the 2011 “Click for Kids” award for their long-term support of the Boys & Girls Clubs. With this year’s festivities generously underwritten by an anonymous supporter, the 2010 Steak & Burger continues to provide our kids an inspiring evening and fun for all.
