Dear Parents and Caregivers I am guessing the farmers among you are pretty happy with the rain over the past few days which will certainly have given growing conditions something of a boost for you. For us townies we just look at the lawn now taking off and think there is a job I didn’t want to do. National Standards Results Over the holiday break I analysed our school’s national standard results for 2016 and after some more work last week our results look like this:

As you can see our results continue to be at a far higher level than the national average in all areas as well as our regional result. For parents this should give you real confidence that the eight-year journey at Pongakawa does without doubt provide you child with the very best foundation for their education. Our aim is always to look to lift these results and ensure “no child is left behind” and make this happen we have very strong systems and structures to support those who are struggling, to lift those needing enrichment and to extend others who need greater challenge. If you were to drill down even more closely and look on the website “Education Counts it illustrates at a more local level as well just what a jewel in the education crown Pongakawa is. Focus however cannot be on national standards alone and we are known for the level of innovation we bring to the learning process and this year will be no different as we look to enter a change-up phase using exciting research and new technologies to assist tried and true practices which we know to work. Feel free to share these results with your friends and family as they really are something to celebrate. Jubilee 125 We are only a week away from this milestone event. It would be fantastic to have your child here on Saturday to be a part of this celebration. The morning session is centred around our current students’ which shows the level of importance we are placing on this time. If you would like to come to other parts of the celebration it is not too late but will be in a couple of days, so register as soon as you can. Included with this newsletter is further information regarding the Saturday programme and a slip indicating your child’s attendance or not. Please fill this in regardless of your choice so we can arrange catering, attendance lists and of course their special jubilee gift. Have a great week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo, Principal

Saturday 25th February 2017 Pongakawa School Open Day for 125th year Jubilee

Please remember to keep this morning free for present day stu-dents as this is the day we will welcome back past pupils, parents and teachers to Pongakawa School’s 125 th year Jubilee. Students will be able to catch the school bus to school to be here by 9:00am and will leave school by 1:00pm. (Please note, our cricket teams will have a bye on the Saturday so they too can be part of this special day) Present day students who come on the Saturday will also have a sausage sizzle and milk drink provided free of charge by the Jubilee Committee and will also receive a special Jubilee gift. A welcome assembly, items by each team and then a variety of activities will all be highlights of the day.

Details of bus pickup places are: Today ALL students were given a flyer with actual pickup times .

Bus run 16 (Gary’s Bus) will leave BP service station at 8.15am; travel up Maniatutu Rd to Pugh Rd. Turning back to State Highway 2, Kaikokopu Rd, Tainui Rd, Arawa Rd then on to school. Bus run 17 (Polly’s Bus) will leave BP Service station at 8.15am; heading to Pukehina Beach, Benner Rd, come out at Old Coach Rd/Bush Rd intersection then on to school. We are aware that these runs do not go to every area but this is as close as we could get them. We have been able to organise Benner Rd and Old Coach Rd/Bush Rd as pick up points if that helps. Buses will leave Pongakawa School at 1.00pm and use exactly the same route as the morning run.

Enviro Group Enviro Tip for this week:

Reuse or recycle: Teaching children to place recyclable items in the recycle bin is an important way to help the environment. Finding creative ways to reuse household items is another.

Make it a fun challenge for the entire family. Be creative and you’ll be surprised how easily an empty cereal box can be transformed into a letter holder, or how quickly an empty shoebox can turn into a storage container for photos and

artwork. The possibilities are endless! You’ll be reducing waste and having a fun time with the children’s new ideas.
