THE PLACETO TURN DREAMS

INTO REALITY

Best wishes

Well what a weekend!

It was with enormous pride that the nation watched our English Rugby team win the RBS 6 Nations Championship with the Grand Slam over France. Of course the victory was made all the sweeter because included in that squad were two members of our Mounts Bay Sports Hall of Fame, Jack Nowell and Luke Cowan-Dickie.

Moments like this reward all teachers and remind us that we are privileged to help our students turn their dreams into reality. This week’s newsletter is once again packed with stories that illustrate how we do this every day, both in class and in the community. We have everything ranging from outstanding creative performances and activities, to winning a wide range of awards and competitions, as well as news of a dazzling array of activities that can be undertaken over the Easter holidays.

Whilst most of you will be having a well earned rest, our Year 11s will be revising hard and preparing for their forthcoming GCSE examinations and many of our faculties are hosting revision sessions here in the Academy over the Easter holidays. For more details see the website.

I hope you all have an enjoyable Easter and look forward to seeing you all when we return on Monday 11th April.

WELL DONE BOYS!

Students from 7 Orange entered the Geevor Scrapheap Challenge last Thursday 17th March. Against stiff competition the 'The Fun Guys’ built a water wheel which pulled a model mining cart up a slope in the fastest time, beating last year’s Cup holders by five seconds with a time of 9.8 seconds. This was one of the fastest times ever recorded at the Challenge for which MBA Science Department received a £100 prize and the trophy, a model of a stamping machine.

Year 9 Childcare

In Year 9 we had the option to choose a GCSE option to finish in a year and we chose Child Development. During this year we have learnt all about children and babies starting from pregnancy right up to pre school.

Since half term, during our Child Development lessons, we have been learning about the diet, health and care of a child. We began looking at a healthy balanced diet for under 5’s and we planned our own ‘Nutritious Nippers’ Tea Party for a chosen age bracket. We brought in healthy foods from every category of the ‘Eat-Well’ plate and had a tea party whilst presenting our findings. We displayed our tea party so a child would love it, with different colours and shapes of foods.

Then we moved onto ‘Feeding a Baby’ and learnt about breast and bottle feeding looking at the advantages and disadvantages for each one. We learnt and practised how to wash and assemble a baby bottle, how to use a steriliser and created a booklet about them both.

We also learnt about nappy changing and bathing a baby. Miss Walters brought in dolls, nappies and a changing bag full of different and interesting things for us to look at so we could understand the importance of correctly washing and changing a baby whilst practicing good hygiene. It was really good to practise on a doll and its good to physically put a nappy on a baby and not just write down the steps of how to do it.

Report by Rowan Torrie & Tilly Hocking, Year 9 GCSE Child Development.

We also looked at ‘weaning’. We learnt about the different stages, when to start weaning and how. During that time two guest came in, Georgie and her 7 month old son Harrison. Everyone loved that lesson as it was great experience to ask a real mum about her own choices she made for her sons and it was really good to know how different mums learn from their first child and do things differently with their second child.

We learnt about footwear and planned outfits using clothes Miss had brought in for different ages and to suit the weather. Finally we looked at childhood illnesses and diseases and different care for poorly children at home and in hospital. We created a story book for a child in hospital to help them feel calm in an unfamiliar place.

Everyone enjoys these Child Development lessons and we all get involved and actually practise everything which is really helpful for our revision.

We have now moved on to a new unit focusing on childcare provisions and the Early Years Curriculum. We had another special guest join us yesterday, Nikki Walters, who is the Manager of Willows Educare in Heamoor and we were able to talk to her about nurseries and childcare as well as learning about the Early Years Foundation Stage. Miss Walters and Nikki were able to help us analyse observations of children from a nursery setting and match them according to the EYFS. This put what we had learnt into real practice just as we would if we worked in a childcare education setting. We really enjoyed our lesson and look forward to what is planned after Easter.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

On a Midsummer’s night, four young lovers find themselves wrapped in the dream-like arms of an enchanted forest where sprites lurk and fairies rule. While a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war, their paths are crossed by Bottom, Quince and their friends presenting a play within a play. Chief mischief-maker Puck is on-hand to ensure that the course of true love is anything but smooth, and games of fantasy, love and dreams ensue in Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedy.

There are still spaces available to see the Royal Shakespeare Company perform 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Hall for Cornwall on 12th May. This trip is open to all students in Years 7, 8 and 9. We will leave school at 12.00 p.m on 12th May. Tickets cost £15.50 to include travel. This trip can be booked immediately on parent2mail or students can see me for a letter and pay by cash or cheque - to be dropped in to Mrs Eddy in the Finance Office. The deadline for this trip is 12th April.

The Story...

I am really looking forward to seeing ‘Gangsta Granny’ at the Hall for Cornwall on 14th April. It has proven a very popular trip and I am sure we will have a great time.

All students need to wear full school uniform and meet me at 12.00 p.m. in front of reception to get on the coach.

Please bring a packed lunch, which you may eat on the coach. If you are entitled to a packed lunch from school you need to pick it up during the second break. I will have pre-ordered it for you so just remember to collect it.

All bags and coats can be left safely on the coach with our driver.

Holiday Reading Ideas

Report by Mrs Marsden

Unfortunately, the forecast for the Easter weekend isn’t looking great, but on the positive side if you are not out enjoying the fresh air then you could be inside reading a great book.

We have some great new books in the library and if you can’t wait until you get back to school to read them then visit your local library or use your World Book Day token before it runs out on 27th March. The online library service at cornwall.gov.uk seems to be a brilliant way of ordering the newest books, at no cost for under 17 year olds.

Years 7 and 8 won’t be able to take any Accelerated Reader quizzes over the Easter break but as soon as you come back to school you will be able to do a quiz on your holiday reading.

You will now receive an email if you have an overdue library book. Please use the Easter holidays as an opportunity to look for any books that you owe. Pop them into the returns box upon your return.

We will be holding a STEAM Careers Fair for years 9,10 and 11 on Thursday 21st April between 10.30am and 3.15pm. This will give you a chance to talk to prospective employers who are promoting careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths

So far the delegates include:

Royal Navy, RAF, Army, Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd, Cornwall Marine Network, Penwith & Truro College, Cornwall College Group, Pendennis Shipyard, Great Western Railway, Falmouth University, Plymouth University, 3D Kernow CIC, Oasis Dental Care, Institute of Physics, SERCO, Deep Blue Sound, Focus Dept Drew Tombs, H Tempest Ltd, Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry, RG Kellow Ltd, CITB, Digital Peninsula Network, Exeter Maths School and Walker & Moyle Chartered Accountants.

During our Wednesday Psychology lesson, the Year 10s went head to head, in a battle to be crowned class champions. Miss Walters’ class and Miss Westren’s class competed on their knowledge of all they have learnt in Psychology throughout Year 10. Beginning with general knowledge they moved onto the kahoot round focusing on Key Concepts and also Core Studies. Finally, they went in to the picture round. After a tough battle the winning team was ‘we are not a-Freud’ whose team members were Kerry, Jamie, Lauren, Loveday and Aiden. This meant Miss Walters class were crowned champions and have already been offered a re match in the summer term. Watch this space!

GCSE Catering Controlled Assessment

Last Friday in the Food Technology room, it was the Year 8 turn to do their end of semester assessment. Our brief was to create a multicultural dish that reflected on a country of our choice. At the end of the lesson a whole variety of different dishes were made. From chilli to pizza, there really was a great selection of food stuffs. For the first few weeks of the semester we made other dishes that reflected different countries. These included Thai green curry, macaroni cheese and a basic minced meat mixture that could be modified into dishes of our own choice. The group enjoyed the experience of making their products and more importantly, eating them!

Congratulations to the Year 9 Catering students who on Wednesday completed their second GCSE Controlled Assessment. Student interpretations, deconstructions of Thai, Greek, Indian, classical French, Spanish, Italian and deep south American cuisines filled the Academy with incredible colour, flavour and aroma.

The professionalism, care and attention to detail was astounding. My only complaint was that some of our students products surpassed the quality of my own!

The final artist of the week for this Semester is Will Rundell in Year 11.

Artist of the Week

Report by Mrs Dale

Will has also been very successful lately. One of his pieces has won first place in the 14-16 age group category in a competition hosted by the Newlyn and Exchange Gallery in Penzance. Six of our talented MBA artists were shortlisted for the exhibition and Will was fortunate enough to receive the first prize of £125 of vouchers during the Private View last Friday. The exhibition continues into the first week of Easter if you would like to visit.

Will is studying GCSE Art as an extra option and is currently completing preparation for his exam which is taking place just after Easter.

Well done Will and keep up the good work!

The prize winning painting

The Year 9 Photography students have been doing their exam this week. Students were tasked with making skillful, original, personal and meaningful artworks with lens and light based media. Mr Cross and Miss Grosvenor have been really impressed by some of the thinking skills, planning, perseverance and determination the students have shown. The results really prove the efforts that have been made and the expertise that has been acquired!

At the end of every term we hold our Music MixX assembly week, showcasing some of the amazing music being produced from students in every year group. The students have been working on their pieces in after school clubs, in their own time and during curriculum music lessons. We started on Monday with the Year 11s, featuring amazingperformances from The Cold 600, Macie George and Sammy Dunn. Tuesday saw great performances from the Year 10s, followed by 9s on Wednesday and 8s on Thursday. To finish the week two brand new bands from Year 7 both gave great performances. All the sound and lighting has been set up and run everyday by our brilliant Tech Team.

Zoonation Review

The performance features street dance, original music, and amazing choreography all around some of our classic fairy tales but based in the inner city suburbs of London.

The piece was amazing, all our students enjoyed the experience, especially the Tech team who had the chance to speak to Zoonations own sound and lighting engineer, and sat by his work space in order to get an experience of how a professional works.

Lots of the students will be using this trip for their Bronze Arts Award Units.

On Friday 18th March, a mixture of Mounts Bay Academy light and sound technicians, and members of the Dance Leaders club went to the Hall for Cornwall to watch Zoonations 'Into the Hoods' performance.

At 6pm all the bands arrived to ‘sound check’ on the stage, making sure that all their instruments and amps were set up to satisfy their own standards, but also working with Steve to get the ‘front of house’ sound great for the audience.

By 7pm The Acorn was full to the rafters, including the extra seating in the balcony. At 7.10pm the first half was started with a stunning performance from Year 7 student Grace Tswei, followed by over an hour of amazing acoustic performances ranging from covers through to original songs from last year’s school album ‘Ferris Wheel’, and new songs written for this year’s album.

After a short break the second half featured performances from six of our school bands, including the Cube ‘house band’ supporting

Rhys Brown and Ewan Ford, The MBs jazz/funk band, and an amazing performance from 11th Hour to finish the night.

A massive thank you to The Acorn Theatre, and we are already looking forward to the next event.

MixXjam

Report by Luke New

First on the scene were our new Year 7 sound and lighting team, who unpacked all the instruments, and set up the stage under close supervision from Steve Warhurst, The Acorn’s own professional technician. Steve provided invaluable feedback on what the professional venue expects from a sound and lighting engineer.

On Tuesday 22nd March, over 50 Years 7, 8 and 9 students were involved in our MixXjam performance at The Acorn Theatre. This musical extravaganza happens twice a year, and is designed to give all our musicians and bands a taste of the professional live music world.

County Cricket

Report by Eva Hawken

Hannah James, Year 10, has become the U15 Devon and Cornwall Archery champion.

Hannah, who only took up the sport last December, trains at the Mounts Bay Archery Club in Penzance. She travelled up to Plymouth recently to take part in the U15 Fita section of the Devon and Cornwall Archery Society National competition, and came away with the title!

Hannah performed so well that not only did she win the U15 section but she beat all the U18 competitors too! In fact, had she been entered in the adult section, she would have come sixth! Well done Hannah!

On Tuesday the U15 girls cricket team played the county league at Truro College. The team played really well and came 4th in the county! Thank you Mrs Crowle for coaching and supporting us. We are all looking forward to the Cornwall Schools qualifier in May!

Well done to the Year 8 Rugby 7s team who were very unlucky to miss out on a place in the final by one try!

They won their pool comfortably, only conceding twotries in the last game. The team then beat Fowey River Academy in the quarter final. In the semi-final they came up against Penryn College. The match was incredibly close but, unfortunately, they lost to Penryn in the last play of thegame!

All the boys were impeccably behaved, a joy to coach and played some lovely rugby!

The Year 8 Netball team had a really great day at the recent Netball tournament. They played eight games in total. They lost two, drew one and won five. They were a real credit to Year 8 and the Academy.

They really worked hard throughout the day with exceptional defence and some fantastic shots. Well done girls, it has been a pleasure coaching you this season.

A huge thanks to Megan and Eva for umpiring and scoring throughout the tournament.

This week’s word is: Spring

Definition:

The season after winter and before summer, in which vegetation begins to appear.

Etymology:

Starting in the 14th century, this time of year was called “springing time” and then in the 15th century this got shortened to “spring-time”, and then further shortened in the 16th century to just “spring”. The 14th century “springing time” came about in reference to plants “springing” from the ground. Before the season was called these things, it was called “Lent” in Old English.
