A Probation Officer's Life

It is hard to believe that this is my 12th and final Message to the membership. Initially I thought

it would be difficult to find enough to say to fill page 1 of the Newsletter. As it turned out, all but 2 of my “messages” spilled over into a second page.

I am most grateful to have had the opportunity to serve you as the Club’s President this past year. If you believe that my time in office was successful, remember that it would not have happened without the help and support of a lot of people. Certainly the officers and the directors were major contributors but there were many other behind-the-scenes people who did so much to keep the Club running smoothly this year as well as in years past. To name but a few are Bob Vogler, Paul Decker, Ed Benz, Dick Gross, Sam Ciaramitaro, Don Blain, Pete Higbie, Jack Wil-liams, Oscar Kanan and Frank Turpin, not to mention Past Presidents George Arsenault, Dan Beck, George

Moulton, John Prost and Ben Burns. And let us not forget the Chorus who practices 52 weeks a year to lift your spirits at the meet-ings. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the efforts of Mem-bership Chairman Eric Lindquist to increase our numbers, especially the creative ways he has developed to accomplish his goals. I would also like to give special mention to our incoming president, Ken Van Dellen, for the wonder-ful group of speakers he has recruited to entertain us this calendar year and who will continue to entertain us through the end of the year. I expect his tenure as President to be as successful as the presentations of his speakers have been, and I’m looking forward to a banner year for the Club.

Continued from page 1Fine for his tireless efforts on behalf of the member-ship. He is singularly responsible for keeping our members informed as editor of our Newsletter that goes to each of us twelve months a year.

Someone recently told me that he belongs to an organization that requires that all incoming members sign an agreement whereby they will bring in one (1) member. That’s right! – just 1 new member. When you think about it, in so doing, that would ensure that the membership count would never drop – provided,

of course, that everyone does as promised. I like the idea! How about you?

I am proud to be associated with all members of the Club and, although I have said it before, this is the fin-est organization of its kind in the country. I consider myself privileged just to be a part of it. I will never understand why men are not flocking to our door just to be given the opportunity to join.

Thank you all for making this past year such a plea-sure for me.

Lauren Parrott

Living with Multiple Sclerosis

Speaker: Lauren ParrottIntroduction by: Ted EveringhamInvocation by: Rev. Judith May Grosse Pointe United Methodist ChurchReported by: Ted Everingham

Luncheon Meeting - July 10, 2012

Lauren Parrott is an attrac-tive, articulate 28-year-

old who is passionate about her work at WMTV, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial commu-nity access television station, as a director, camera operator and familiar on-camera host of “Things To Do at the War Me-morial”. She is an engaging, comfortable conversationalist with a natural ability to put one at ease.

No one would guess that Lauren was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, or MS, when she was 18. When she was 16, Lauren began to experience physical “problems.” She no longer could run, an activity that she enjoyed. She experienced extreme fatigue, even falling asleep in class, but despite these increasingly frustrating and baffling symptoms, she continued to host “Par-rott Talk,” her own talk show on local cable in Grosse Pointe, to perform in musical theatre and serve as edi-tor of her high school yearbook.

After seeking advice from physicians in at least three fields of medical practice, she received the shocking MS diagnosis…just five days before she graduated from University Liggett School. Looking back on that otherwise devastating moment, Lauren remembers a faint but growing feeling of relief at having an answer at last about her continuing physical difficulties.

Lauren was – and to this day, is – adamant about keeping a positive attitude despite her MS…or maybe because of it. Two months after being diagnosed, Lauren entered Michigan State University where she earned a degree in Communications in 2006 without missing a beat. Her passion was television: She had been a ten-year-old “kid host” on Channel 4’s telecast

of the Thanksgiving Day, le-veraging on her childhood TV experience at the War Memo-rial and earning accolades and encouragement from “grown- up host” Mort Crim. As a 21-year-old, Lauren was an intern on ABC’s “Good Morn-ing America” in New York, where she met her long-time “idol,” Diane Sawyer.

But after graduating from MSU in 2006, she was frus-trated by her inability to find employment in television. She fell into depression, which led to a serious relapse in early

2007. In October 2007, she began receiving monthly infusions of a medication that resulted in a dramatic recovery from the relapse and a marked slowing of the progression of her MS.

During recovery from her relapse, Lauren began making short videos and posting them on YouTube in an effort to find others her age and gender who were experiencing a condition similar to her own. She is posting them still, having made nearly 100 videos so far. She has corresponded with people from 77 coun-tries and rightly describes herself as “an MS advo-cate.”

In June 2008, Lauren fulfilled her dream of working in television when she was hired by the War Memorial to work at WMTV. In the evenings, she is completing her Master’s degree in Health Communications and plans to earn a doctorate in that field within two years. Lauren’s mission is to educate people about MS, to preach that one can accomplish anything one is deter-mined to do. “MS has made me a stronger person,” she says. “It’s not always easy, but it is possible” to live with MS. Lauren Parrott demonstrates that every-day.

3/4 Lunch

Past President Rodger Sulad showed up at a recent meet-

ing with a special Father’s Day gift he received.

He had mentioned to a friend that the club’s general membership voted against a whole sandwich several years ago because it cost an extra fifty cents. She roared with laughter!

A few weeks later she came up with this gift – ¾ of a lunch bag, ¾ sandwich bag, ¾ napkin and a short toothpick.

Rodger Sulad shows the meeting his Father's Day gift

A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans. St. Peter

addresses this guy."Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"

The guy replies, "I am Joe Choen, taxi driver of Las Vegas."St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi driver, "Take this silken robe

and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven." The taxi driver goes into heaven with his robe and staff, and it is the minister's turn.

He stands erect and booms out, "I am Joseph Snow, pastor of St. Mary's for the last forty five years."

St. Peter consults his list. He says to the minister, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter of Kingdom of Heaven."

"Just a minute," says the minister. "That man was a taxi driver, and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?"

"Up here, we work by results," says St. Peter. "While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed."

Bruce Greening

Speaker: Bruce C. Greening UBS Financial Services, Inc.Introduction by: Dan Beck Reported by: Dan Beck

Investment Seminar - June 26, 2012

Building A PortfolioBruce has over 30 years

of experience in corpo-rate finance, operations, and crisis management with middle market firms. He managed the family offices of two high-net worth families over seventeen years. He has worked in a variety of industries including automotive and parts manufac-turing, software, hospitality, publishing, agriculture, health care, beverage and real estate as a corporate finance professional while managing the assets for the principal owners of his employers.

His practice comprises both private estates and corporate retirement plans, including defined contribu-tion and defined benefit plans. He holds series 7, 63, and 65 FINRA securities licenses and is a Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist (CPRS) as well as an Ac-credited Investment Fiduciary (AIF).

It is evident that stocks are prone to sudden decline in value. These declines seem to happen at random, and there are many different reasons offered for stock market crashes and bear markets. The most severe downturn marked the start of the Great Depression where stocks lost over 80% of their value. In this in-stance, the recovery was over 12 years. More recently stocks lost 44.7% of their value during the early 2000 bear market. This recovery period was the second longest in history. Stocks lost 50.9% during the recent 2007-2009 bear market. This downturn lasted for 16 months and the length of the recovery period has yet to be determined.

History reveals that small stocks have been one of the strongest performers after recessions. Small stocks haven’t out-performed large stocks after every reces-sion; yet on average their potential to lead the way out of recession is significant.

Risk and return usually go hand in hand when it

comes to investing. Investors tend to demand higher returns from riskier investments to compensate them for the addi-tional risk they have to bear.

From 1970 through 2011, value stocks out-performed growth stocks in each category, providing more return for less risk.

Many investors think diver-sification refers to building a portfolio that contains differ-ent asset classes such as stock, bonds, and cash. It is equally important to diversify holdings within individual asset classes

such as stocks, bonds and cash. But it is also equally important to diversify holdings within an individual asset class.

1. Balance growth investments with those that pro-duce income.

2. Invest in both large and small companies, as well as a mix of well-established and new companies.

3. Consider investments that are currently out of favor but have potential to increase in value.

4. Blending effectively may cushion against the many ups and downs in the market.

Treasury inflation-protected securities (TIPS) should be considered as a hedge against inflation. They have given investors a fairly consistent rate of return over time.

Trading volumes in 2011 for all large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks showed large-cap at 4.73 mil-lion, mid-cap at 1.78 million and small-cap at .35 million. Liquidity risk occurs when there is insuffi-cient demand for a security, making it difficult to sell, causing price to drop significantly.

Bruce is an effective communicator whose knowl-edge of capital markets and business operations is impressive. We look forward to his return.

Golf Season EndsBanquet Follows On October 4

The end of the official scoring for the SMC Golf League’s 2012 season is Friday, September 21.

After that date, play at all three courses may continue, but no scorecards will be collected or recorded. The Golf Committee Handicappers, Steve Shrader and Ron Rudolph, will crunch the season’s scores to calculate all cash prizes to be distributed at the Golf Banquet on Thursday, October 4.

Again this year, the Banquet will be held at Barrister Gardens, 24225 Harper in St. Clair Shores beginning at 6pm. Barrister Gardens is just north of Little Mack between 9 and 10 mile roads. There is ample park-ing behind the building and a few places in front. As always, paid up members of the League attend free of charge and they can bring a guest or guests to the Banquet for a charge of $20 each.

All tables are set for ten diners, and food will be served family style. Members and guests who wish to sit together should make their requests known to one of the Golf Committee members (listed below), or you may mail in a request to Nick Kondak that includes all member and guest names (up to ten) to be seated at one table.

Checks for guest dinners should be made in the amount of $20 payable to “SMC Golf League” and mailed to the treasurer, Nick Kondak, 740 Hawthorne, Grosse Pointe Woods, 48236.

The Golf Committee will try to satisfy all seating requests, but adjustments may be necessary.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! Please make your reserva-tions by September 28 when we must commit to a firm number of attendees. If you commit to attending the Banquet, please honor that commitment. We’ve had too many no-shows recently, causing us to pay for an unused dinner.

Registration will be at two tables at the front of the hall. Last names starting with A-K will go to one table and L-Z to the other. If you park in the rear, enter through the back door and walk through the hall to the front. The agenda for the evening includes cocktails (open bar) and socializing from 6 to 7pm followed by dinner. We will have music to entertain us during din-ner. After dinner, the floor will be open for dancing.

Each League member, upon being greeted at the registration table, will receive a sleeve of golf balls and his cash winnings for the season. During the evening, the winners of the two Scramble events and the low gross and low net winners will be announced. Every member will receive a sheet listing all games played in 2012 and the line score hole by hole, for each game, at each course. The sheets will be placed on the members’ tables.

Please remember to give us your reservation by September 28 by phone to one of the Golf Committee, by e-mail to: [email protected] or by mail to Nick Kondak, 740 Hawthorne, GPW 48236.

Remember the Banquet date: Thursday, Oc-tober 4, 2012 at 6:00 pm

A new pastor was out visting his parishioners one Saturday

afternoon. All went well until he came to one house. Although it was obvious someone was home, no one came to

the door even after he had knocked several times. Finally he pulled out his card, wrote Revelation 3:20 on the back and stuck it in the door.

The next day the card was in the collection plate.

Below his message was the notation Genesis 3:10.Revelation 3:20 reads: Behold I stand at the door,

and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me."

Genesis 3:10 reads: "And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked."

Patient: Doctor, you've got to help me. Some mornings I wake up and think I'm Donald Duck, other mornings I think I'm Mickey Mouse.

Doctor: Hmm, and how long have you been having these Disney spells?
