Term 4, Week 2 October 18, 2019

Believe it or not? Principal's EditorialOn May 9 1957 a young Air Force pilot disappeared on a routine mission while flying over the Nevada mountains in the United States. 54 days later Lt. David Steeves walked out of the wilderness. He had already been declared dead (his mother even received the official certificate) and so he was given a hero’s welcome. Everyone wanted to interview him and hear his story.

He told how something blew up in the plane and he parachuted to safety into the mountains. Search and rescue teams had already tried to find him and when further searches could not find his Lockheed T-33 training jet the rumours started.

Some people said he sold the plane to the Russians; others said it had been broken into pieces and taken to Mexico. A newspaper failed to pay him for his story, his wife walked out with the baby and his career was ruined. He worked as a pilot and over the next few years spent time searching for his jet. He never did find his jet and sadly he died in a plane crash in 1965.

It was 12 years later, in 1977, when the mystery was solved. Some Boy Scouts hiking through Kings Canyon National Park came across a cockpit cover in the mountains. There was a serial number on the piece, and it matched Steeves' missing T-33. People found out it was all true when it was too late.

2000 years ago another bloke walked out of the Judean wilderness and spent three and a half years making some pretty amazing statements. He died and was certified as dead. Three days later he turned up alive, and people have been arguing about it ever since.

Check out His story in the Bible – make sure you don’t find it was true - when it’s too late.

It’s worth a thought.

Forgiveness Prayer Breakfast 2019Monday morning of this week various leaders from around Australia attend the National Prayer Breakfast in the Great Hall in Parliament House, Canberra.

Of note to me was the fact that our prime minister and the leader of the opposition sat side by side. They both gave speeches that clearly demonstrated their respect and belief in the value of pray and Christian living in Australian society. The Leader of the Opposition stressed that while the media portrayed the political arena as combative, the reality is that they are just ordinary people who value constructive dialogue and who are keen to listen. At this important time of review of religious freedom and discrimination bills, there is ongoing scope to engage in constructive conversations with political figures on both sides of politics.

May you be encouraged to pray for our countries leaders and policy makers. As Scott Morrison put it, “The only prayers not answered are those not asked”

Forgiveness is letting go of grudges and bitterness. When someone hurts you, you can hold on to anger, resentment and thoughts of revenge – or embrace forgiveness and move forward.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." - Ephesians 4:31-32

"A gentle word, a kind look, a good-natured smile can work wonders and accomplish miracles." - William Hazlitt

PB4L Focus I accept that things change; I keep my locker clean and tidy.

Nurturing Young MindsFriendship and Social Skills - Part II - Skills to Teach

While there are many skills at play in strong and balanced friendships: empathy, keeping calm, friendly facial expressions, good listening and social problem-solving are among the most valuable skills that can be taught and practised in front of a mirror.

Make & Keep Friends• Patience & maturity improve over time.• Show relaxed and welcoming facial

expressions.• Have a happy demeanour• Listening takes time- consciously notice

sounds and mindfulness.• Focus on solutions rather than

problems.• Endure and solve different opinions and

needs.• Use conflict as an opportunity to

Yr 6 Science IncursionOn Tuesday, the Years 5 and 6 classrooms had a science incursion where the students had the chance to experience science hands on!

The Year 6 class investigated the topic of 'Electricity' and were able to generate electricity and create their own electrical circuits.

They explored circuit features and experimented with different items to see whether they were conductors or insulators.

ASV BasketballThis week our Year 7/8 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams ventured across to Taylor's Hill to compete in the Adventist Schools Victoria competition. The ASV events serve as a great day for students to compete and socialise with students from our sister schools across the state. The basketball event was highly anticipated and was an excellent opportunity for our students to gain more 'in-game' experience. The students practiced their zone defence, shot three pointers and practiced working as a team. The Taylor's Hill Campus managed to win both the boys and girls categories against Nunawading in the finals. Great work to all our student athletes!

Teacher Vs Students SoccerThere are many key dates on the calendar each year, the Staff vs Student matches have emerged as a highlight for both Staff and Students alike. The final event before the Year 12's departure was a much awaited Soccer match, which went ahead and through the drizzling rain. The first play of the match saw a ball being put through to Mr Bertram to score within the first 30 seconds of play. This goal ended up being the deciding goal for the match to put another win for the staff on the leaderboard.

Dear Gilson College School Community, We will be holding the School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year on 19th December 2019! We’re doing it to raise much needed money for school infrastructure and resources to maintain the school academic excellence. About the Program The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved. How Does My Child Fundraise? Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours). Online Fundraising The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfundraising.com.au and share your online fundraising link. Getting Involved Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact me on the details below. I can’t wait to see you at our event! Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE Prizes MUST be ordered between the 15th November 2019 and 20th November 2019. Simply visit schoolfundraising.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist! Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
