An incredible season has now

come to an end. Ringette

New-Brunswick has made a

remarkable mark in history

embracing tightly its gold medal

winners at the Canadian Ringette

Championship in Burnaby, BC this

past April. Coach, Gilles Proulx

and his allies have proven themselves as an ideal coaching staff after

winning the number one title in Canada. The U16 Team NB

(Stingers) dedicated their time to numerous hours of practises and

games before the tournament, Gilles explained how mental

preparedness has been the key to their success. NB was fortunate

enough to send 2 teams to nationals with its second team U16 West

Kent Hot Shots losing in the consolation round. RNB has definitely

come a long way this season including the creation of an NRL team

for which they have seen nothing but a great year. NRL teams all

through Canada have been using the Atlantic Attack committee as an

example model after them receiving the “National NRL volunteer

award”. The proud committee has shown no other than dedication

and pure love to the sport. With many hours put through the NRL

organization, only positive results have come out of it. So in

conclusion, the RNB executive members would like to say how proud

we are of all our athletes around the province. The commitment and

passion they share for the sport is what keeps the sport alive and

growing in New-Brunswick. So keep playing it, loving it and living it!

Ringette New Brunswick and Fredericton Youth Ringette are thrilled to announce that the 2013 Canadian Ringette Championships will be held in Fredericton from March 31 – April 6, 2013. Up to 50 teams from across Canada will converge on the capital city to compete in the U16, U19 and National Ringette League levels. All games will be played at the Grant-Harvey complex as well as the Willie O’Ree Arena. Additional events will be taking place in conjunction with the Championships to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the invention of the sport of Ringette. A true Canadian sport, ringette was developed by Sam Jacks in Thunder Bay, ON in 1963. It is now played by tens of thousands of people in Canada, and in several other countries around the world.

We are focusing our energy this year on our Junior program in the build up to the 2013 Canada Games and on Saturday 31 March we held the first of our Junior Tri Camps in CFB Gagetown. 13 juniors attended and took part in some fun sessions including core stability, training on rollers, testing on a Computrainer and a track session. The day was very successful and we had a great spread of ages from 13 to 19, a nice mix of males and females and I am pleased to say a high standard of abilities. In terms of talent spotting this initial camp was a great success. We aim to repeat and grow these Camps in the coming months and plan to host another one in roughly 6 weeks. Please let me know if you have any questions or require any additional infor-mation. Thanks and best wishes, Garth Millar Executive Director

NB Wrestlers Shine at Nationals For three days, athletes from across Canada came to Fredericton to compete for the chance to be a National champion. Hosted by the Black Bears Wrestling Club (BBWC) in conjunction with Wrestling NB the Cadet/Juvenile National Wrestling Championships offered a full weekend of excitement. NB athletes did not disappoint, winning four gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the event. Allyssa Cleaves and Nick Golenioec of the St. Stephen Wrestling Club (SSWC), as well as Rebecca Girvain (BBWC), and Tristan Chappelle (Tommies) each brought home gold medals with Bailey Theriault and Tiffany Hibbert both of Kent WC in Rexton, winning silver medals, Elizabeth Fagon (Tommies), Norm Thomson (SSWC), and Joshua McLaughlin (SSWC) each received bronze medals. Cleaves was also named Outstanding Juvenile Women’s Wrestler and Theriault placed second at trials and will go to the Pan Am games in Venezuela as a member of Team Canada. Cleaves noted that her victory in the 52 kg weight class was bittersweet. “The crowd started cheering

with only seconds remaining in the second round, and I immediately felt excited, satisfied, knowing that I had not just claimed a national title, but one in a weight class heavier than what I was used to”. The tournament being one of her last before she heads to Brock University, Cleaves went on to say that she was filled with mixed emotions as she realized she had just wrestled one of last matches coached by “Zwick,” (Pat Zwicker) “I cannot thank him enough for all he’s done for me. I also give a huge thanks to everyone who came out to support our NB wrestlers in Fredericton, as well as all of my family, friends and Sport NB who have always offered their support to me”. SSWC Coach Pat Zwicker had nothing but positive reviews from the tournament saying that “The finals on Saturday were a perfect end to a great season for our club . Nick (Golenioec) and several of the Cadets showed that the future of our program looks solid and Allyssa's (Cleaves) final inspired every NB wrestler to go home and train harder. I must admit, I was nervous about her final as we hadn't faced her before but after she scored her first point, I knew it was over.”

Zwicker expressed having similar thoughts to Cleave’s final match saying that “as a coach, you consider yourself lucky or maybe even blessed if you get a chance to Coach an individual like Allyssa Cleaves in your career. Cleaves is a talented athlete and a special person that has made her mark on every member of our team and right now I am trying not to think about what next season will be like without her."

Another New Brunswick athlete who had a great deal of success over the weekend was Rebecca Girvan. Like Cleaves, Rebecca Girvan from the Black Bears Wrestling Club was overwhelmed with emotion when she finished her match “It was the feeling once the whistle blew, that I knew that all the hard work had finally paid off, my dreams have finally been fulfilled and I knew that I was finally proud and held the medal I had worked hard for the last four years, my dream was now my reality”. Girvan, who will be graduating from Oromocto High School this June, is looking forward to the upcoming year training with the Black Bears Wrestling Club before heading to NBCC to take Early Childhood Education in the fall of 2013.

Girvan’s Coach, Don Ryan of the Black Bears Wrestling Club was impressed with the city’s response to the event “I was very excited to see the community support this tournament. Over 950 athletes, coaches, officials and family members came to Fredericton this past week. Our local athletes made us very proud as did athletes from around the Maritimes.”

Ryan went on to say that he is very excited to begin working on the Junior/Senior National Championships which will be held in March 2013 at the Richard J. Currie Centre on the UNB campus.

The Black Bears Wrestling Club thrives to be recognized nationally as a leader in the pursuit of achievement of excellence in amateur wrestling via athlete development and coach development.
