Principal’s Pen Forgiveness During a recent staff devotion, Will Heyes shared a story which I think is extremely powerful. It was recorded by Jill Carattini, and it is her words that have inspired what is to follow. In war-torn Northern Uganda a teenager named Betty had her village raided by the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel army known for its brutality and widespread human rights violations. She was kidnapped as a slave for a commander and ordered to commit callous acts of violence as a child soldier. After six years, Betty managed to escape - but coming home would not be simple. She had committed violence against the very people she hoped to rejoin. Her own guilt and shame was as real as the mistrust and anger of her village. Forgiveness and restoration would seem a foolish hope. But the people of Uganda had adapted a ceremony that makes it possible for both to occur – because this is a situation faced by hundreds of children. Jill writes: ‘In a ceremony that includes the act of breaking and stepping on an egg……the returnee is cleansed from the things he or she has done while away. The egg symbolizes innocent life, and by breaking and placing themselves in its broken substance, returnees declare before their village their desire to be restored. In a final step over a pole, the returnees are invited into new life. In many cases, women returnees come home with babies who were as a result of rape. When they arrive at the broken egg, the child’s foot is also placed in the substance. The spirit of reconciliation, like warfare, must touch everyone.’ It is a powerful story that has something relevant for each of us. At this time of the year we have focused on the story of Easter. We have recalled Jesus, and pondered on the forgiveness we have been offered through his sacrifice. We, who were lost, can be found in a simple step of faith. The ceremony of the Ugandans provides restoration into a community. The sacrifice of Jesus provides us restoration back to God, and as a result, often to one another as a consequence. Forgiveness of one another is a difficult step, but is possible no matter how deep the hurt. God, who took our guilt and shame upon himself and offers us such complete forgiveness and restoration, by his presence in our lives gives us the capacity to do the same. Principal’s PenForgivenessDuring a recent staff devotion, Will Heyes shared a story which I think is extremely powerful.

The spirit of reconciliation, like warfare, must touch everyone.’

It is a powerful story that has something relevant for each of us.

It’s the truth at the heart of Cornerstone, and a reality that we hope every student here will understand and embrace.

Principal’s ForumThank you to the parents and members of the community to attended our first Principal’s Forum towards the end of last term. The feedback has been fabulous, and we very much appreciated the opportunity to address a range of questions that parents posed for us to answer. This will become a regular event on the College calendar. Stay tuned for future dates. School PhotosBy now, your child should have brought home their school photo order envelope.School photos are scheduled for Tuesday May 5th and Wednesday May 6th. If you are placing your order through the payment system on the envelope, please make sure that your child brings this to school on photo day to hand to the photographer, otherwise your order will be missed. If you place your order online, you DO NOT need to return the envelope. The Primary school photos will be scheduled for Tuesday and the Secondary for Wednesday. The Kindy groups will be photographed on their normal days of attendance. All students MUST wear their formal winter uniform, and if they have sport on their designated day, can change into their sports uniform after photographs are taken. Please ensure that dress lengths are to knee length and that ties are worn.If you wish to have family photos taken, please see the office for more information.

Swimming LessonsPrimary swimming lessons are commencing on May 18th for the Primary school students (Year 1-6). Students who are not participating are still required to walk down with their classmates during the lesson times. If your child is sick and incapable of walking the distance, please do not send them to school.

New Admin StaffYou may have noticed that Mrs Petro Gouws, our beloved Office Manager has not be around recently. This is because she has relocated to Geraldton to take up a lecturing position there. We are sorry to see her go and will miss her greatly. As such, some adjustments and reshuffling has occurred within the office, and you will find two new faces greeting you when you visit. We are delighted to have Mrs Sarah Burge and Mrs Mogie Govender helping us out in the short term, with some permanent days and relief opportunities utilising them in the long term. Welcome aboard ladies!

Excursions and CampsThe Primary school has had a lot of students expanding their learning outside of the classroom walls in recent days. The Year 6 camp was held last week,

and we welcome back both students and staff from this annual event. Year 5 students made their way to Perth to visit the Fremantle Gaol last Friday as well. Both groups of students were extremely excited at these opportunities, and we are grateful to staff and volunteer parents who have made it possible. Thanks to everyone involved. You are wonderful and we thank God for you all.Secondary Outdoor Education students will be on an expedition next week. Please pray for safety for these ATAR students and their teachers whilst they are away.

Office RequestThe lovely office ladies delight in helping you however they can, but unfortunately have had to draw the line for what is becoming a regular issue. Please do not use the front office as a drop off and collection point for items to be collected by others. The ladies simply do not have the time to manage item collection and payments from members of the College community for matters not relating to school. So, if you ask, please don’t be offended when they advise that they are not able to assist. It will be necessary to find other ways to coordinate these personal matters.

Grace Court Parking and AccessA reminder about our request to not park in the island in Grace Court. We previously had a complaint from the bus companies regarding parents who

are parking in the island in Grace Court. The risk to children is simply too large to allow this to continue any longer. The City of Busselton is actioning the installation of bollards to prevent any parking from continuing, but until such time as they are in place, please ensure that you find other locations to park when collecting your children. In addition, please NEVER cut across the top of the cul-de-sac, but always exit Grace Court and re-enter at the roundabout if you need to move your car.

Open DayOpen Day is coming around quickly. If you have family or friends who are considering Cornerstone, then please let them know to keep an eye out for advertising in the coming weeks. The date is still be be confirmed, but we will advise as soon as this is locked down.

Dunsborough Ground BreakingWe are about to break the ground at Dunsborough, and building will commence in the next few weeks. We will be encouraging everyone to be part of the formalities on Saturday May 16th when we will prayerfully and ceremonially launch this new venture. The program is still to be advised and we will ensure it is widely advertised ahead of time. This will be on site in Cornerstone Way, Dunsborough.

Brand Launch As part of our new venture, a new logo will be released on May 6th. Keep an eye out for the changes that this will make to the documents and materials the College distributes.

SignmeeSignmee is providing to be an absolutely remarkable tool that many families are appreciating. Unfortunately, we have some who have yet to access the system, and as a result may be missing out on vital information or the submitting of documents As such, we now have a new deadline for parents to activate their access by Friday May 1st. Failure to register and utilise this system may begin to have consequences with your children being unable to participate in certain events. It is paramount that every family actions this as a matter of urgency.

Sydney-Canberra Trip 2016This is an early notification for this year’s Year 8 and Year 9 students for next year’s Sydney-Canberra Trip. This is a terrific experience for students in Year 9 and Year 10 in 2016 - one that we would encourage every family to consider for their children. It provides an opportunity to travel to our capital and experience a wonderful range of opportunities - from the War Memorial, to Sydney Harbour Bridge, from seeing Parliament in action, through to snowboarding (snow levels permitting). It’s the trip of a lifetime with their peers. Now is the time for your child to start doing those few odd jobs to put money aside for this trip. Even the Government considers it to be valuable, as they pay a portion of the travel costs. So, start getting excited. It’s just over a year away.

Crunch & Sip TimeLast term our primary school classrooms signed up for “Crunch and Sip” time. This is when a short break is taken to snack on fresh fruit and vegetables and sip on water. It was wonder-ful to see so many students eating healthy snacks. Keep up the great effort and continue to fill your lunch box with fruit and vegetable snacks and a clean bottle of water.

Donations Wanted All primary school classrooms have Fruit Bowls waiting to be filled with spare apples or easy to eat fruits or vegetables. If you are able to donate suitable snacks

for “Crunch and Sip” time place it into the Fruit Bowl at the beginning of the week. This way we can ensure all children can participate in Crunch and Sip time.
