St. Louis Magazine Chooses 139 SLUCare Physicians as "Best Doctors" Spanning more than three dozen specialties, 139 doctors from

SLUCare have been selected for St. Louis Magazine's 2010 "Best Doctors" list. The list is based on the annual "Best Doctors in America" database, which considers more than one million peer evaluations to create a directory of approximately 30,000 doctors. New Faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine - July 2010 Fred R. Buckhold, III, MD, joined General Internal Medicine July 1, 2010 after finishing his residency training at SLU. He was the recipient of the Kinsella Award, given to the best graduating resident, in 2010. He was also given the Excellence in Teaching award by the Medical School Class of 2009 during his residency. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Buckhold was also named Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, with a focus on ambulatory education. He and his wife, Gretchen, have two daughters and are expecting twins later this year.

Dulce M. Cruz-Oliver, MD, finished a 2 year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at SLU this year and joined the faculty on July 1, 2010. She is board certified in internal medicine and geriatrics. She is originally from Puerto

Rico where she graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Medical School in San Juan and completed her residency at the University District Hospital in San Juan. She is interested in palliative and hospital care as well as end-of-life care of nursing home residents. Lenise A. Cummings Vaughn, MD, finished a 2 year fellowship in geriatric medicine at SLU this year and joined the faculty on July 1, 2010. She will be joining our St. Louis VA faculty in the near future. She received her BA in Biology at Williams College in Williamstown, MA followed by a Genetic Engineering Graduate Certificate from the San Franciso State University. She graduated with her medical degree from Saint Louis University and completed her internship year at SLU. Her internal medicine residency was completed at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Her interests lie in epidemiology, African-American health studies and evidence-based geriatrics.

Mark Fesler, MD, joined Hematology and Oncology, as an Assistant Professor in July 2010. He earned his MD, Summa Cum Laude at SLU completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado

Health Science Center and completed a subspecialty residency in hematology and oncology at SLU in 2010. Milta O. Little, DO, just finished her geriatric subspecialty residency at SLU this year and joined the faculty on July 1, 2010. She is board certified in internal medicine and now eligible to take the Geriatric boards. She graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at St. Mary's Hospital in St. Louis. She is interested in long term care research and would like to become a certified medical director and improve transitions between hospital care and nursing home care.

Shirin Mazumder, MD, joined the Division of Infectious Diseases on July 1, 2010 after finishing her infectious diseases subspecialty residency training at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

Robert Neumayr, MD, received his MD from the University of South Dakota. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Rochester Mayo Clinic and his cardiology and interventional cardiology

subspecialty residencies at SLU. Dr. Neumayr is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and nuclear cardiology. Joshua Stolker, MD, received his MD from Duke University SOM and completed his internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of PA. He completed his car-diology subspecialty residency at Washington University/Barnes Hospital and his interventional cardiology subspecialty residency at St. Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute, University of Missouri at Kansas City. Dr. Stolker is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. DIVISION OF CARDIOLOGY NEWS New Cardiology Subspecialty Residents Pradeep Chandra, DO, received his DO from the Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences. Dr. Chandra completed his internal medicine residency at SLU and was a chief resident during 2009-2010.

Patrick McCann, MD, received his MD from Southern Illinois University. Dr. McCann completed his internal medicine residency at SLU and was a chief resident during 2009-2010. Nicholas Olson, MD, received his MD from Wayne State University and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of California – San Diego. Aaron Tang, MD, received his MD from SLUSOM and completed his internal medicine residency at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. New Interventional Cardiology Subspecialty Resident Mohammad Marashdeh, MD, received his MD from Jordan University of Science & Technology. He completed his internal medicine residency at Indiana University and his cardiology subspecialty residency at the University of Arkansas. DIVISION OF ENDOCRINOLOGY NEWS New Endocrinology Subspecialty Residents Vijay Eranki, MD, received his MD degree from Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad, India. He completed his internal medicine residency and was chief resident at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago (affiliated with University of Illinois at Chicago). Umadevi Muthyala, MD, received her MD degree from Bangalore Medical College in 2000. She completed her internal medicine residency at St. Francis Hospital/University of

Illinois – Chicago in 2006. She was a hospitalist/clinical instructor at Barnes Jewish Hospital/Washington University from 2006-2010 before joining the endocrinology subspecialty residency program. DIVISION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND HEPATOLOGY NEWS After 20 years of leading the division, Bruce R. Bacon, MD, has chosen to step down as Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, effective May 31, 2010, after serving in this role since 1990. Dr. Bacon will remain an active member of the Division, maintaining his dominant presence in the community as an expert in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C and other diseases of the liver. He will also continue his role as the co-director of the Abdominal Transplant Program. Brent A. Neuschwander-Tetri, MD, has agreed to serve as Interim Division Director. Dr. Bacon has overseen the creation of a nationally and internationally recognized division during his tenure as division director, building it from only two full time clinical faculty members to 21 faculty members and overseeing the training of 79 clinical and research fellows. He was a member of the research team that discovered the gene that is abnormal in patients who have hereditary hemochromatosis and was honored for this research with the 1989 Marcell Simon Award for best research in hemochromatosis by a younger investigator. Because of his continuing work in liver research, Dr. Bacon was elected into the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 1993. He has served on numerous editorial boards, has served on the Board of Directors of the American Liver Foundation as Vice Chair

for Medical Affairs, and in 2004 was elected President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He has written more than 295 original articles, reviews, and book chapters, and is the co-editor of two books in hepatology. As a testament to his contributions, he will receive the AASLD Distinguished Service Award at the AASLD national meeting in October. School Tools for Nurses Bruce R. Bacon, MD, and Brent A. Neuschwander-Tetri, MD, from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology will be participating speakers at the upcoming “School Tools for Nurses” event on August 6, 2010. The program is presented by SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and will be held at SSM St. Clare Medical Center with a target audience of school nurses from the bi-state area. Dr. Bacon and Dr. Tetri will present a program titled “The ABC’s of Liver Disease”. New Gastroenterology and Hepatology Subspecialty Residents The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology welcomes new GI subspecialty residents who began their training July 1, 2010: Yazan Abdalla, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Jordan; Roshani Desai, MD, received her medical degree from the University of Missouri-KC; Khalil Farah, MD, received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut; Ali Pakravan, MD, received his medical degree from Shahid Behesthi University. All four received their internal medicine residency training here at Saint Louis University.

Pitch for Liver Research

Adrian M. Di Bisceglie, MD, Chair of Internal Medicine and Chief of Hepatology, throws out a first pitch on the Tuesday, June 15th, Cardinals' game. The Friends of the Saint Louis University Liver Center sold more than 500 tickets

to the game, raising more than $7,000 for liver research. DIVISION OF GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE NEWS In June 2010 Timothy D. Rice, MD, took his fifth yearly trip to Kinshasa Congo. His church has been partnering with several churches in Congo to address the health needs of the poor in their community. More then just seeing patients, they continue to explore ways to set up sustainable actives that will improve health over the long term. This year a team of 18 individuals made the trip. Dr Felix Mensah a 4th year Med/Peds resident at SLU traveled with the team. His experience and knowledge including his training in Ghana were a valuable asset to the team and the patients. Dr Barb Whitman from Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital was also part of the team. Her developmental expertise was a great encouragement to many of the kids of parents we worked with on this trip.

DIVISION OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE NEWS

In April, Saint Louis University's Division of Geriatric Medicine ranked number 13 on U.S. News & World Report's list of 2011 Best Graduate Schools, and recognized as one of the nation's top graduate programs.

Under the editorship of John E. Morley, MB,BCh, the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association (JAMDA) with an impact factor of 3.709 has moved up from #10 out of 36 geriatric and gerontology journals to #7 out of 40 according to the newly released 2009 JCR Science Edition. This places JAMDA ahead of JAGS and Journals of Gerontology for the first time. JAMDA's website is www.jamda.com. New Subspecialty Residents in Geriatric Medicine Robert B. Rilpuou, MD, joined the division after completing his internal medicine residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Flushing, New York. He is joined by his wife, daughter and another child due in September. Zohayr M. Al Shaial, MD, joined the division after working as a hospitalist at the St. Louis VA Hospital and decided to specialize in geriatric medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Veterans Health Services and Research Administration/Drexel University, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He is joined by his wife and three children.

Jeffrey Matthew Geitz, MD, received his MD degree and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, Kansas. DIVISION OF IMMUNOBIOLOGY New Subspecialty Residents, Section of Clinical Allergy and Immunology Julie Hong, MD, received her MD degree from the Medical School at the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed an internal medicine/pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee-Memphis. Jacquelyn Sturm, MD, received her MD degree from the Medical School at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed her internal medicine residency at Saint Louis University. DIVISION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES NEWS After a long and successful tenure, Robert B. Belshe, MD, stepped down as Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the end of the 2009 – 2010

academic year. He has served in this capacity since coming to Saint Louis University in 1989. He will continue as an active member in the division and as the Adorjan Endowed Professor of Medicine, focusing on directing the Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) and his other funded research activities. Sharon E. Frey, MD, is serving as Interim Division Director. Dr. Belshe led several large pivotal efficacy trials of influenza vaccines for the NIH and industry and has participated actively in the product development plans for the evaluation of numerous vaccines in people of all ages. More than 20,000 volunteers have participated in the Vaccine Center studies under Dr. Belshe’s direction. During his career at Saint Louis University Dr. Belshe developed a candidate vaccine for parainfluenza type 3 (CP45) and has served on FDA and CDC advisory committees providing guidance on vaccine regulatory matters and developing vaccine usage guidelines and recommendations. Currently, Dr. Belshe is the chair of the NIAID phase 3 multicenter study evaluating the efficacy of live attenuated influenza vaccine in children and the Herpevac Trial For Women. In 2006, Scientific American Magazine named Dr. Belshe one of the top 50 scientific innovators in medicine for his work on new influenza vaccine technologies. Dr. Belshe’s publications include 211 peer-reviewed articles, 2 books, and 11 book chapters. New ID Subspecialty Residents Getahun Abate, MD, PhD, comes to Saint Louis University from his internal medicine residency program at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis.
