Special and heartfelt thanks to Mrs Losiak for her outstanding organisation of a Covid-safe Book Week this term. It was a fantastic week full of fun and focus on the joy of books, stories and reading. Thanks to all the parents who assisted with costumes for our students on our dress up day. I commend all our beautiful students for their beautiful and respectful behaviour during all Book Week activities. Thank you to our staff for participating with such enthusiasm, joy and creativity.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2020

We are now accepting Kindergarten enrolments for 2021. If you have received an enrolment pack, please return it to the office as soon as possible so that we can include your child in our student numbers for 2021 and begin preparation for supporting their transition to ‘big school’. If you would like an interview to discuss any concerns regarding your child’s enrolment into Kindergarten, please contact the school office to arrange an interview with me or my Deputy Principal, Sharon Moon. We are very happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have. We are currently planning Covid-safe online Kindergarten transition events which will provide new and not-so-new parents with an abundance of very valuable, updated information. I strongly encourage all 2021 Kindergarten parents to participate.

area had an enrolment cap set by the department from Term 4 2019. Within the enrolment cap, a number of places (the buffer) must be kept aside for the likely number of students who will need to enrol during the year. For this reason, a school will not take non-local students once this buffer is reached, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Please contact the school office if you have any questions about this.

Emergency Contacts

I ask all parents to ensure that you or the emergency contact listed for your child/children are available to come to the school at short notice and in a timely manner if called. Occasionally we have students who become extremely ill, very suddenly and quickly at school and it is really important that those students receive appropriate treatment in a more suitable environment than our sick bay provides. Our sick bay provides a very short term service for sick students. We are able to care for students until a family member or the emergency contact arrives to take them home. If children are infectious this presents a risk to others, it is important that they are taken home or to a doctor's surgery as soon as possible to prevent infections spreading to others here at school.

Updated Covid Information

Any students with Flu/Covid-19 symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste and loss of smell) even mild symptoms should not be at school. Students should be tested for Covid. If, after testing negative, the person has ongoing symptoms which persist beyond 10 days, they should see a doctor. The medical assessment should consider whether symptoms are typical for that person (for example seasonal, allergic rhinitis) and provide documentation for the school if that is the case. If there are new symptoms at any time, the person should be tested again. A negative COVID test must be received and sighted by school before the student returns to school.

I thank all parents and carers for your support with this matter.

SAS Appreciation Week

This week was SAS (School Administration and Support Staff) Appreciation Week. We acknowledged and celebrated the great work our Office Staff, School Learning Support Officers, and General Assistants do at Barnier. Mrs Reid, Mrs Staveley, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Iemma, Mrs Noble, Mrs Watts, Mrs Alam , Mrs Sayer, Ms Crowther, Mr Skeen and Ms Borg quietly go about being just amazing every day! Our school could not operate without their support, assistance, expertise, skill and dedication. Their contribution to our wonderful school is highly valued, respected and appreciated.

Special Students

Special thanks to these wonderful Kindy students who shared their excellent writing with me last week. They read their writing to me. It was very neat, beautifully presented and they had sounded out their words independently. We are so proud of all our Kindy students and the amazing progress they have made this year in all curriculum areas but particularly in Reading and Writing.

Reading for Parents - DRINKING WATER

Many children aren't consuming enough liquids - especially water - and that lack of hydration could affect their physical and mental health.

Even though for most youngsters this is not an immediate, dramatic health threat, lack of hydration is an issue that could be reducing their quality of life and well-being. Children can be more susceptible to dehydration than adults. That can lead to physiological problems such as neurological issues, increased demands on their kidneys and heat stroke.

In one recent study, about half of the children and teens surveyed weren't getting enough hydration. The likelihood of inadequate hydration was 76% higher in boys than girls. Nearly 25% of the participants said they drank no plain water at all.

Lack of water is a significant issue for children. During the school day, access to water may be limited, and many children may even avoid consuming water because they prefer not to use the toilets at school. This may stem from lack of privacy, embarrassment or even bullying or other risks associated with being in the toilets. There is also the effect of selling of juices, sports drinks and bottled water. The good old water fountain or a refillable water bottle may lack appeal to trend-conscious youngsters.

Need for water. Proper hydration is crucial for physical processes such as circulation, metabolism, temperature regulation and waste removal. Excessive dehydration can cause serious problems but even mild dehydration can cause headaches, irritability, poor circulation, reduced physical performance and poorer mental functioning.

However, the good news is that this is a problem with a simple solution. By helping children drink more plain water - a low-cost, no-calorie beverage - we can improve their hydration, which may allow many children to feel better throughout the day and do better in school. By increasing water intake by even 1 cup a day, hydration is improved.

Some tips to help boost children’s water intake:

Keep water cold. Add frozen water bottles to a child's lunch pack. The bottles will keep the lunch cold and thaw throughout the day so the water is cool to drink. Cold water often tastes better to children than water at room temperature.

Don't rely on a child's thirst. Thirst is not always a good indicator of hydration. Children need to have access to water throughout the day.

If a child dislikes water, try infusing water with fruit (such as lemons), vegetables (such as cucumbers), or herbs (such as mint) to give the water a flavour without adding extra sugars.

Have a great fortnight,

Mandy Hollis

KS

In KS, this term we have absolutely loved being at school and getting to expe-rience some of the extra special events going on around the school. We cele-brated being 100 days smarter (& yes we are so so clever now!). We have loved sports in schools where we get to play lots of exciting games as well as gym-nastics (gymnastics being our favourite). We have even managed to meet and make some year 6 friends, who taught us how to play some games. In the classroom, we are loving that we get to not only learn about living things, what they need and how they grow, but we are also so excited to be growing our own beans which have already started to sprout. We are superstars with our reading and writing and love learning new things, we have come so far this year and are so proud of ourselves and each other.

Art Time!

1M have enjoyed creating various different colourful, vibrant artworks. This term the stu-dents have loved experimenting with directed drawing and created many sketches that in-cluded portraits, animals and flowers. Here are some of our great masterpieces.

Writing Time!

This term we have also enthusiastically relished the opportunity to learn more about factual texts about animals and we have written detailed ideas about our favourite creatures.

4P

4P has been busy working hard and enjoying the many activities of Term 3. During education

week, 4P enjoyed buddy time with students from 2M and showing parents their sustainability

posters through a zoom meeting. Additionally, student's have been awarded their pen licence

for excellent penmanship!

New Blackboards

Our students are enjoying the new blackboards that have been installed in the Kindy Passive Area.

Hi Barnier Community, The EAL/D Team are here again and we’d like to talk to you about vocabulary development! We mentioned in our last edition that an important part of our role is to develop and extend our

students English through vocabulary development. This is achieved through creating individualised

and co-designed teaching programs where we work collaboratively with the class teachers to

develop your children’s English language.

How you can help build your child’s vocabulary:

Read! Read! READ!

Don’t just read school books: recognise your child’s interests and find books that relate to them,

this will encourage them to read for enjoyment. This includes, comics, newspapers, web articles,

instructions. Ask your child questions about what they have read. Discuss! Introduce your child to

alternative words when describing. For example: ‘See that huge/giant/massive crane’

Children always have a bigger receptive vocabulary than expressive vocabulary: meaning, they

understand more words than they’re able to use. This means that there’s no need to oversimplify

the way in which you talk to your child.

Knowing how to use a thesaurus will increase your child’s vocabulary and improve the quality of their written work, so show them how to use it and encourage them to have it on hand when they’re writing.

Use a dictionary to look up the meaning of any unknown word (teachers often encourage the use of

post it notes when reading and encourage students to look up the word when finished).

EAL/D News 2-2020 EAL/D stands for English as a Second Language or Dialect.

Page 9: NEWSLETTER - barnier-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦ · problem with a simple solution. y helping children drink more plain water - a low-cost, no-calorie beverage - we can improve their

Encourage children to search for words they don’t understand. There is no use of being able to

simply read a word, they must understand and be able to use the word.

Read through their writing with them, simply find alternate words for younger children and for older children, get them to highlight words that they’ve overused so they can look up alternatives.

Feel free to drop us a comment or ask any questions.

Until next time…………
