A mini High School model was devised some years ago at Castletown where students can move from class to class for their lessons and be taught by specialist teachers for the learning area. The transition will simply be a macro model of what our children have experienced. There should be no issues moving from class to class. Socially they are well prepared and mature. Our children are very excited about moving to High School and look forward to the new journey and experience. We will lose 120 students approximately, but are growing at the early childhood end of the school. For instance, we expect 81 Pre-Primary students for 2015. This means that whilst there will be possibly a reduction of 2-3 teachers in 2015, our School population has a sustainable base. NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY Our school is part of a national project about students with disability and/or learning difficulties. We have been asked to provide data about the number and learning needs of children at our school. The name of the school and the name of students will not be reported. Information about the different types of needs and the programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected. It is important to contribute to this because it will help Governments and the Department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia. If you would like to learn more about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability you can visit the website. www.deewr.gov.au/students-disability

The P & C are conducting an interesting Book Fair, thanks to coordinator Mrs Fiona Nadason and her band of parent helpers who have volunteered their support. There has been a lot of interest from children and parents generated with the colourful and rich variety of books. Castletown “bookworms” are having a feast of books from which to choose. Congratulations to the following winners of the colouring in competition. Kindy / Pre Primary category, Bronte Florisson, Year 1 category , Blayden Coussens, Year 2/3 category, Hayley Gallop and Year 4/7 category, Taylor Midgley. All winners receive a $15 voucher to spend at the Book fair.

SUCCESSFUL BUSY BEE A huge thank you to all our wonderful parent helpers and ECE teachers who combined on Sunday to plant the new garden at the back of the new ECE buildings. A big effort from everyone ensured an area we can all enjoy and appreciate. Thank you to all the donations of cactus and agapanthas and other varieties of plants for the garden. Special thanks to South East Tree Loppers for their most generous donation of mulch for the garden bed.

Without an understanding mind there would be no learning. People who don’t practise understanding don’t

use their minds fully. Life is dull and boring because they just do the least amount of learning or thinking.

People, who use their head to understand and solve problems, have great insights and wonderful ideas.

People who use their hearts to understand show compassion and forgive people for their mistakes.

To practise understanding, you pay close attention. Look, listen and think. When faced with a difficult

problem, you reflect and reason it out until the answer becomes clear. You resist distractions. You

concentrate your mind to help you see the whole picture and to understand the meaning of what you see.

You open your heart to understand how people feel and put yourself in their shoes. You understand that we

all make mistakes. You are willing to be forgiving.

ASSEMBLY

A fantastic assembly item from Room 1. They ably demonstrated through their own devised skits the ‘7 habits of effective people’; the topic they have been studying in class. Students in groups chose their ‘habit’ and organised their skit. The habits displayed were: 1. Be proactive, 2. Begin with the end in mind, 3. Think win, win, 4. Put first things first, 5. Seek first to understand then to be understood, 6. Synergize – combine the strength of your team and 7. Sharpen the saw balance feels best. They are endeavouring to use these as their mantra in Room 1 and for goal setting. Well done Room 1.

MINISTERS’ VISIT JUNE 9TH

The following Ministers will visit Castletown on June 9th to participate in a forum with our students from years 6/7. Students will be asking questions of the Ministers. Hon. Dr Kim Hames MLA, Deputy Premier, Minister for Health; Training and Workforce Development. Hon. Michael Mischin MLC, Attorney General; Minister for Commerce. Hon. Terry Waldron MLA, Minister for Sport and Recreation; Racing and Gaming. Hon. Joe Francis MLA, Minister for Emergency Services; Corrective Services; Small Business; Veterans. Parents are invited to attend the forum which commences at 9.00 a.m. Condingup School Principal, Mrs Melanie Hart and selected students from Condingup will be guests at the forum.

TRANSITION TO SECONDARY SCHOOL IN 2015 FOR OUR CURRENT 6/7 STUDENTS

Planning for our 6/7 students to move to secondary school in 2015 is proceeding extremely well. The Department of Education Policies have significantly contributed to this being possible. Liaison between the Esperance Senior High School and our school has been frequent and positive, with a special transition committee set up between schools to address any issues and set directions for planning. A transition meeting with year 6/7 students is planned for June 10th with a parent meeting on June 12th at the High School. Meetings with parents began as early as 2013, so there have been ample opportunities for parents to understand implications for the transition. The school has currently four classes of 6/7 students.

Congratulations to the following winners of the colouring in competition. Kindy / Pre Primary category, Bronte Florisson, Year 1 category , Blayden Coussens, Year 2/3 category, Hayley Gallop and Year 4/7 category, Taylor Midgley.
