Dear Parents

The past three weeks have been frenetic! Building positive relationships with students, staff and parents has been a specific focus, as has coming to a better understanding of the uniqueness of this lovely school. Thanks to everyone for your patience and support as we all transition to a changing dynamic at Castletown.

School Board – Marnie Fels, Pia Powell, Kristy Roper and I attended a two day Governance Training program last week working alongside School Board representatives from both Esperance Primary and Esperance Senior High. Our school’s journey to Independent Public School status provides exciting opportunities for our school community and gives a framework to ensure the School Board can engage authentically in setting a positive direction for the school.

P&C – I was very impressed with the professional manner in which the P&C is structured and the positive focus given to working with the school to make difference for students. The Executive and members deserve thanks for the energy and commitment they bring to the school.

Semester Reports – All teachers are working collaboratively to moderate their assessments/judgements of each child’s achievement and progress this Semester. The Reports that will be given at the end of Term will be an honest reflection of your child’s learning in both academic and non-academic areas of the curriculum, contain no surprises and give parents an accurate sense of the extent to which progress is good enough. The judgements made will inform teachers’ planning for improvement in Semester Two. I have been most impressed with the quality of dialogue I have had with staff as we set and understand expectations around reporting to parents.

Digital Technologies –

Congratulations to Kate Ainsworth for her role in leading the Dream Technologies Project. Kate is supporting teachers from all local schools to effectively teach Digital Technologies and empower students to better use computers to both create and to solve problems – exciting times ahead!

Julie Fetherston and Russell Palmer have accepted my challenge to develop a proposal to increase student access to computers including: providing effective support to teachers, developing a scope and sequence K-Yr6 and leading our school to be well prepared to meet system expectations and report on student learning in this area of the curriculum in 2018. Their draft proposal was shared with staff yesterday and is very exciting. Congratulations to both Russell and Julie for their work to date.

STEM PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE 2017 – Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) is a system priority. Castletown PS is forming a professional partnership with Esperance PS, supported by the Department of Education, to ensure our school has maximum opportunity to understand and implement this priority area effectively. We are delighted to form and build a positive alliance with Esperance PS as we progress this initiative.

Enrolments – In the past couple of weeks we have had close to 20 new enrolments. A very big welcome to all new members of our school community. Colin Brand

THE VIRTUES PROJECT - COURAGE

WHAT IS COURAGE? Courage is personal bravery in the face of fear. It is doing what needs to be done even when it is really hard or scary. Courage is going ahead even when you feel like giving up. Courage is needed in trying new things. It is admitting mistakes and then doing the right thing. Courage is the strength in your heart.

WHY PRACTISE COURAGE? Without courage, people would only do what is easy. No one would try new things. Everyone would do what everyone else is doing, to avoid standing out – even if they knew it was wrong. Fear would be in charge. With courage, you can face any situation. Courage helps you to do great things.

HOW DO YOU PRACTISE COURAGE? Courage helps you do the right thing. When you feel afraid, name the fear and then let it go. Then do what you really want to do. Admit mistakes and learn from them. Keep trying. Stand up for what you know is right even if all of your friends are doing something wrong. Ask for help when you need it. Let courage fill your heart.

SIGNS OF SUCCESS You are practising courage when you…… Do what is right for you even when it is hard or scary Find strength in your heart even when you are afraid Are willing to try new things Admit mistakes and learn from them Make amends when you do something wrong Ask for help

School Snapshots!

Last week in EC4, we read the story ‘Silly

Billy’ by Anthony Browne. It tells the story

of Billy who worries so much he can’t sleep.

We made worry dolls so that if we can’t

sleep, we can tell our worry to our doll and

then we can sleep too. Some EC4 students

proudly show their worry dolls!

Banners in the

Terrace Competion

Banners in the Terrace is one of WA’s biggest community arts projects, featuring around 80 banners from Councils all over the state. The banners are displayed along St Georges and Adelaide Terraces, during the Annual Local Government Convention each year.

Students from Castletown Primary School competed in this competition. Their small designs depicted typical Esperance scenes such as beaches and pine trees.

Charlie Liddelow was runner-up in the Shire of Esperance competition with his tugboat, tanker jetty and whale tail design. In the photo above Charlie is flanked on either side by Hayley Gallop and Tyler Hawkins.

Bookaneer Book Fair Where books are the

TREASURE!

Our Book Fair will be taking place during Week 6: Monday 29th May - Friday 2 June. Tameeka Hankin will be coordinating the Book Fair so if there are any parents who are available to help out please call/message Tameeka who is organising the roster on 0409 084 796. More details will follow soon. Please note that due to the Book Fair taking place this term there will be no Book Club during Term 2.

Sleep School-aged children need 10 -11 hours sleep a night. Getting a good night’s sleep will help your child to be more settled, happy and ready for school, and will strengthen his/her immune system. Here are some sleep tips:

Have a bedtime routine – this will help your child wind down from the day.

Keep the bedroom dark, cool and quiet - this will help your child drift off easily.

If anxieties or worries are keeping your child from relaxing, acknowledge the feelings and deal with it straight away or plan to sort the issue out in the morning after a good night’s sleep.

Remember, medication is not the answer to children’s sleep problems. Contact your local Community Health Nurse on 9071 0400 or go to http://raisingchildren.net.au for more information.
