The children’s writings encompassing Lucky Bay, Grass Patch, Esperance Bay and Kepa Kurl captured the spirit of Esperance in many ways. From the squishy white sands of Esperance beaches to the jewelled islands and the productive farming areas, we were given excellent descriptions of what Esperance is all about, engaging us in a tour of the district. We could all imagine this beautiful place Esperance by the colourful and interesting writings. ‘I Love a Sunburnt Country’ specially “touched our hearts” with such a sincere rendition of the unison poem. Clear articulation and diction ensured the images we needed to remind us of the “wide brown country” and remind us: “Wherever I may die, I know to what brown country, my homing thoughts will fly.” Thank you and congratulations Year 4 for your item and for conducting the Assembly in a confident manner. STRING MOVEMENT The entire school became involved in the String Movement on Thursday last with a commitment to no bullying through visible tying a piece of string around each child’s wrist to show we are not prepared to accept any bullying whatsoever at Castletown. Our Councillors reminded everyone of the additional actions that need to support the no bullying concept for example, BE KIND, tell at least 10 people how good they are, and remember Henry James words, “Three things in human life are important, the first is to be kind, the second is to be kind and the third is to be kind.” Thank you to Mrs Gillian Florisson for introducing us to the STRING MOVEMENT. SWIMMING CARNIVAL What a success story last Friday’s swimming Carnival was! Student sportsmanship and team spirit was outstanding from all the factions. The cheering almost lifted the roof off the Leisure Centre as the children swam their laps giving of their best. Well done to all our students for their superb effort and for never giving up! Dear Parents/Carers

ASSEMBLY

Mrs Gidgup/Mr Ross’ Year 4 presented a truly Australian item with some special writings about Esperance followed by Dorothea Mckellar’s well known poem, ‘I Love a Sunburnt Country’. Clear articulation and diction ensured the images we needed to remind us of the “wide brown country” and remind us:

Dear Mrs Grewar,

How would you feel if you were not

smart and everyone teased you?

Therefore we all need homework.

I believe that we should have

homework because homework will help

your learning skills.

The first reason why I believe

students should have homework is

because when NAPLAN comes all

students need to know the answers to

get a good grade.

Secondly, another reason that

students need homework is

because some people can’t read

and spell properly so they need

to do some homework to help them.

Thirdly, I strongly believe that

students need homework because all

students will have to get a job when

they are older so they need homework

to become smarter.

Finally, we must realise that homework

is very important because you will get

more practise with maths for school.

In conclusion, students should have

homework if they are to be successful.

From Olivia (Rm 14)

Dear Mrs Grewar,

I believe that we should have homework because It helps us learn our learning skills. Firstly, I think we should do homework and RIBIT Reading because it is fun and creative. And when you think homework is bad you can put on some music and then do your homework while you are listening. Secondly, homework can be all different things as in spelling, English and everything else and when you learn all that, that means your will be ready for school which can help you with your future life. Thirdly, if you forget your homework and never do it when you’re older you won’t know what anything is because you didn’t do anything in Primary School. Therefore, I think you should have homework. Finally, I think all people should have homework because that is how you learn more and get a good education and you will be very smart. Conclusion, I think it is good to have homework because it helps you become an amazing person when you are older.

From Lucy (Rm 14)

Dear Mrs Grewar

How would you feel if you were sitting at home doing homework whilst your family was doing fun things in the lounge without you, because I know I wouldn’t like that. This is why I strongly believe that students should not be allowed to do homework. The first reason why I believe that students should not be allowed to do homework is because school students already have seven hours of learning at school and at home children take approximately thirty minutes to do their homework. Secondly, another reason why I believe this statement is because on GWN Seven news they said homework is harmful for children’s brains. Thirdly, I strongly believe that kids should not do homework because children need to spend more time with their family. Finally, we must realise that children might have some after school sport and therefore do not have a lot of time for extra school work. In conclusion, I believe that students should not have to do homework. I hope that after this you will agree with me.

Sincerely, Ella (Rm 14)
