School’s In, It’s BackPack Time!
We are beginning our fifth year of the BackPack Ministry for children attending Wylie Primary School.
This is our church-wide mission project, and over the past five years, we have had the opportunity to
help more than 150 less-fortunate children in our community. All of this has been due to your love
and generosity of time and donations.
We hear so much about hunger in different parts of the world when in fact, hunger is a reality right here in our own community.
According to recent statistics, one in four East Texas children is at risk of hunger. When a child does not have enough food to meet basic
needs, he or she is considered to be “ food insecure”.
The BackPack Ministry provides meals and snacks to children whose primary source of food is the school cafeteria. By providing a
backpack with food items to help sustain them until returning to school for a meal, their nutritional and overall well-being needs are met.
Each week, on a scheduled day, usually Thursday, a church volunteer travels to the PALS Food Bank in Henderson on Jacksonville Drive.
The volunteer picks up the pre-packed food that has been delivered from the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler. Once the food is picked up,
it is delivered to the Wylie Primary Campus. A school representative then assists the volunteer with unloading the food packs. The
backpacks are discreetly distributed to the children each Friday afternoon and the last day before an extended holiday vacation such as,
Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break. The food provides them with nutritious meals throughout the weekend. The cost of providing
backpack meals for a child the entire school year is $162. Donations can be made for the full amount or for a portion of the cost, and any
amount given is greatly appreciated!
For more details about this worthwhile ministry contact Brenda in the church office at 903-657-8664.

Celebrating Ministry!
On September 2nd, we will meet with 12 sister
United Methodist Churches from our area in what
is known as a “Charge Conference.”
Charge Conferences are annual gatherings held to
give us an opportunity to reflect on ministry
celebrations from the year gone by, and to
challenge us to think about ministry opportunities
for the year ahead. There is much to celebrate.
And there are always great opportunities awaiting
us.
Our District Superintendent, Reverend Chuck
Huffman, will be with us to hear our celebrations
and our anticipations. He will also share with us a
personal challenge regarding our moving forward
in God’s Kingdom work.
I hope you can join us Tuesday evening at 6:00
p.m. in our Great Hall.
Come for the fellowship.
Come for the celebrations.
Come for the challenge.
Happy and blessed to be in ministry with you.

“To clap or not to clap…that is the question.” That’s not exactly the way
Shakespeare said it but the paraphrase serves an important purpose in this
article. So often in church services the folks in the pews aren’t sure whether
they should clap or not clap after certain parts of the service. My word on
this is let the Holy Spirit guide you. I have had soloists in both this church
and other churches tell me that they would prefer not to have applause after
they have sung. I have had others that have not commented on the subject
which I assume means that applause does not bother them. So what do we
do about it? Here’s what I do…if I am greatly moved spiritually by music,
or drama, or scripture reading, or sermon, and I feel the desire to applaud,
then I do. At other times, the music, drama, scripture reading, or sermon,
have been equally as moving, but I do not applaud since it would take away from the overall experience. Sometimes
complete silence after a solo is more meaningful than spontaneous applause. Never feel that you need to applaud
because the person beside you is applauding. If the Spirit leads you to, then by all means do so. And never feel that
applause is expected…after all, God is the only TRUE spectator in a worship service!
My thanks go to so many this month…
Linda Pool, Sarah and Gerald Roper, for helping me with the quartet on the last Sunday of our
Cokesbury emphasis.
Ann Harris for the beautiful medley arranged so professionally by Ouida Henson.
Cyndi Walker for the moving rendition of “Jesus Paid It All”.
Nancy Preston for being our soloist for the choir anthem, “More Love”.
The first Wednesday in September will be the start of rehearsals for “Hanging of the Greens”. We will rehearse the
music for this program from 7:00-7:45pm each Wednesday, and then you will be dismissed while the Chancel Choir
continues to practice for Sunday worship services. We won’t stop you if you decide to stay!! It would be such a
boost if we were to fill the choir loft for this event.
Grace to you all………..Jack
