COMPETITIONS The DOUBLES’ DRAW took place at HENLEY – see COMPETITIONS & REPORT PAGE. DATES for COMPLETITION of MATCHES for each round are specified.

SINGLES 1st Round : the only outstanding match is Lindsay Townsend v Roy Jones (was played at Henley but tied – chose to replay) Needs to be played ASAP. SINGLES 2nd ROUND Matches MUST BE COMPLETED by or at FEBRUARY MEDAL – can choose to play earlier at Badgemore if both going & in agreement. DOUBLES : There are only TWO 1st Round DOUBLES matches – to be played by the end of MARCH 2014 : Ricky Cox & Siggy Mensah v Dave Miners & Lee Challis (A) Richard Davies & Steve Wood v Keith Nicholls & Lindsay Townsend (B) 2nd Round matches (Quarter-Finals) - to be played by end of MAY 2014 A v Clive Miners & Simon Powis B v Dave Evans & Ian Brown James Bayliss & Andy Whitehurst v Ian Breakspear & Mick Nichols Andy Beal & Andy Halstead v Jon Axon & Roy Jones

HANDICAPS Lee Challis, has made the necessary adjustments after Carswell performances. He assumes Club members’ HCs haven’t  changed. HCs are included at the end of this Newsletter but may be subject to change should any Club Member contact him with a new HC. If you have any problems/questions/amendments/updates, contact LEE at [email protected]

AS SOON AS ANY CLUB MEMBER HAS A NEW HC, PLEASE INFORM LEE IMMEDIATELY. FIXTURES See separate Fixtures Page for the WHOLE of the NEW SEASON – chosen by the Committee. MAIDENHEAD has now been booked for the JULY MEDAL : MONDAY 21st JULY 2014 : Subsidised. Cost to members is £45 for those who attended Henley & £50 for others. Guests are £58.

SCORECARDS Once again, some members complete scorecards clearly and accurately but others are very hard to read – thus making UNNECESSARY EXTRA WORK for  the  member  completing  the  Results’  Sheet  as  groups   finish AND for our Newsletter editor in  updating  the  FARTS’  PAGES.

It is YOUR responsibility to fill-in the scorecard accurately and clearly – if unsure how, ask one of the committee – separate columns for gross score / net score / stableford points for EACH HOLE

AND check your own card when returned by the marker – then sign it - BEFORE HANDING IT IN.

At Henley, one member, was given 2 pts less than they should have had ! This was highlighted by his net score not tallying with similar net scores that had more points. Also, at Carswell one member signed their card but on checking when they got home, realised they should have had 2 pts on the last hole instead of the 1 recorded by the marker – luckily this didn’t affect positions. Yet another points mistake was made at the 2-Club but it appears, excluding the mistake mentioned above and despite some illegible figures, that other scores at Carswell were correct – mind you that was after  Lee,  who  kindly  volunteered  to  do  the  Results’  sheet, had to double-checked with some members and markers !!!

WHAT A BLODDY WASTE OF TIME – SORT YOURSELVES OUT WILL YOU !!!!

2nd ROUND (7 byes in 2nd R) 8 matches TO BE PLAYED BY or AT THE FEBRUARY MEDAL 21st February at Wychwood Andy Halstead V Simon Powis Ian Breakspear V James Bayliss Keith Nicholls V Lee Challis Mick Nichols V Jon Axon Lindsay or Roy V Chris Powis Andy Beal V Steve Wood Ricky Cox V Alex Stacey Ian Brown V Clive Miners Draw for 3rd Round to be made at Wychwood – Feb medal

Our Secretary is rather concerned that a significant number of members/guests, who originally said they were very interested in going to The Belfry, have not confirmed or paid any deposit. There is a time-limit on being able to cancel any bookings without losing our deposit – it is fast approaching. If going, for the WHOLE WEEKEND or just on ONE of the days, please let Dave Evans know – he’s  losing  his  last  few  hairs  rather  quickly  and,  this  is  no  joke,  he  has often woken up at 4:00am worrying about it - then  can’t  get  back  to  sleep. He is becoming a little disillusioned with all the hassle involved. He  appreciates  that  the  choice  of  The  Belfry,  particularly  on  a  Sunday/Monday,  doesn’t  suit  everyone, but he endeavoured to keep the cost as low as possible (Friday/Saturday was considerably more with restricted tee times) and all members were contacted and the majority of the committee agreed before booking.

CAPTAIN’s 12 rooms for 24 places (sharing in twin rooms) + 2 single rooms (extra £55 single room supplement) DAY/WEEKEND Tee-times for 32 on the Sunday (26 staying + up to 6 others) THE BELFRY 32 for the Presentation 3 course Dinner (26 staying + up to 6 others) Buggies are not included – they cost £45 (I understand that neither course is particularly hilly)

So far only the following 12 have paid a deposit or in full : (amounts in brackets)

Andy Halstead (40) Dave Evans (145) Dave Miners (47) Ian Brown (30) Siggy Mensah (40) Adrian Couchman (47) Mark Samuel (40) Richard Davies (20) Ricky Cox (40) Robert Samuel (40) Ted Lewis (40) Lee Challis (20)

Said they are definitely going but yet to pay deposit : Lindsay + guest & Jim Ramsey.

SUNDAY 21 Sept 2014 : Breakfast on arrival at 9:0am (for everyone): 18 holes on PGA Course teeing off at 10:30am: Presentation Dinner at 7:30pm (everyone) – either in own function room with bar or in a cordoned off part of restaurant at  the  Belfry’s discretion - would cost an extra £15 per person to actually book a function room but if they chose to put us in one, it would be free.

MONDAY 22 Sept 2014 : Breakfast for those staying + 18 holes on BRABAZON Course teeing off at 10:30am

COSTS : Whole 2 days £190 guests & £145 max members (subsidy of at least £45) (NB: plus £55 single supplement for those not sharing a room) Sunday only £90 guests & £70 max members (subsidy of at least £20)

The following other members/guests initially expressed a definite interest in going but have yet to confirm by paying a deposit: 9 Andy W, Jon A, David P, Martin W, Chris P, Matthew B, Steve W, Keith N & Phil C. Possibles for either the whole 2 days or just one day : 8 Mick N, Simon P, Roy, Andy B, Ian Breakspear, Julian M, Steve Greenwood & Grant S Can’t  make  it  3 : Richard West, Barry Phillips & Clive Miners

NB: If  you  can’t  make  the  Sunday, then it may be possible to just play the Monday only but I would need to book extra tee-times if more than 2 AND if all 26 whole weekend places are taken. Cost would probably be in the region of £80 - £100 to include breakfast and subsidy.

IF YOU WANT TO BOOK THE BELFRY let Dave know your option IMMEDIATELY (whole weekend/Sunday only/Monday only) and if GOING TO BADGEMORE, you can pay deposit then. If NOT GOING to Badgemore, please let Dave know by e-mail ([email protected],) your option, and IMMEDIATELY send a cheque for £40 made out to : Cholsey Golf Society to : Dave Evans 88 Station Road Cholsey OX10 9QB Many thanks.

RACE NIGHT

Saturday 10th May 2014 New Cholsey Pavilion (same venue as last year) 9 Race Meeting

Doors open at 5:30pm First Race at 6:00pm

Last year we made a profit of only £230 for the Society – this was due to increased costs: hall hire, public liability insurance, printing too many programmes (Dave’s  mistake), new Race Night CDs/betting slips and 3 donations of £100 to good causes. This year, the costs will be considerably less – just the hall hire, fewer programmes, publicity & only 2 donations to good causes – Cholsey Bluebirds & CHOKO (barrel of beer for Festival), plus Cholsey Primary School PTA, who are once again organising the bar & food – they keep the profits (they made over £500 last year). The  total  income  from  last  year’s event was over £950 (excluding PTA food/bar profits) – race sponsors (£200), programme adverts (£120), buying horses (beforehand and on the night - £180), programme sales (£25), Auction Race (£120) and betting on the night (£320).

The only cost to Society members would be them buying horses beforehand at £5 each - with the chance of winning £30 per race (last year, Keith Nicholls bought 5 horses and had THREE WINNERS) - and their personal betting if attending and bidding for a horse in the auction race, on the night.

It is anticipated that ALL Race Sponsors (£25 per Race) and MOST programme advertisers (£15 full page & £10 half page) will be local businesses, as was the case last year.

However, the ONE sponsor we  don’t  have  is  a  main sponsor for the event – to cover PART of the overall costs (say 30-50%): the hire of the hall/kitchen, bar licence, new betting slips, cleaning and publicity costs – around £200 in total.

YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT Obviously our main purpose is to provide monthly opportunities at reasonable costs to play golf and enjoy the banter and social life that goes along with belonging to and being a part of any group/club/organisation/society such as ours.

We have established a tradition of supporting local organisations over the past 10 years from our Christmas Raffle and Race Night events. Every member also benefits from these fund-raising events in the form of subsidies at medal days and particularly  for  Captain’s  Day/Weekend,  thus  allowing  us  to  book  higher  quality  courses  than  we would otherwise be able to do. Last year the Society provided nearly £2000 in subsidies and,  if  attending  all  golf  days  &  Captain’s  weekend this year, you are likely to receive almost £100 each in subsidies.

By joining the Society there is the expectation that you will support both The Christmas Raffle and Race Night in ANY way you can. It is appreciated that selling Raffle tickets is not for everyone, although we did achieve a marvellous total this year due to your efforts, but if  you  weren’t able to support it, then you might be able to help with the Race Night in one of the following ways:

x Attend the Race Night yourself x Bring some friends & family along to the Race Night x Buy a horse (£5 – gives you a chance of winning £30) (Available to buy from March) x Sponsor a Race yourself if we don’t get 9 businesses (£25 – name horses/jockeys, full page advert, free drink/meal on the

night) (9 Races) x Persuade a business to Sponsor a race (Better option – then you can spend £25 on buying a horse or betting) x Find a MAIN SPONSOR for the cost of Hiring Hall, Betting slips and Publicity printing

(Sponsor’s name on Posters/Programme/Flyers + full page advert + 2 complimentary drinks & meal : £70 - £100) NB: Also, 2 free drinks and a meal on the night for member who finds a main sponsor.

x Persuade a business to place an advert in the programme (£10 half page / £15 full page with advertiser getting a complimentary drink on the night)

If we can’t find a Main Sponsor from a business contact, then those members who were unable to support the raffle might wish to help by making a donation to cover the costs of staging the event – meaning more is raised for the Society SUBSIDIES and “good”  causes.   Cost of : 1500 Flyers – black/white A5 double sided for distribution through Cholsey Village Forty Magazine (£50)** 40 Posters – colour A4 (£20)** Hall hire (£62.50) Kitchen (£10) Bar Licence (£15 Tote/Betting slips (£20) Cleaning by the caretaker the following morning (£15) ** if you have access to a photocopier then we might be able to print them without any direct cost or need to sponsor the cost – Ted Lewis, some years ago, when we had a hard copy Newsletter for each member, photocopied them at work saving the Society over £100 that year. NB: Obviously, it is not expected that those who sold/bought themselves all 50 Raffle tickets distributed to each member should feel obliged to support the Race Night other than by buying a horse or two and hopefully attending on the night, bringing with them a friend/relative/partner – you’ve done your “bit” already.

DECEMBER 2013 CARSWELL RREEPPOORRTT THURSDAY 12th December 2013 21 members 2 guests

AALLEEXX SSTTAACCEEYY IISS TTHHEE NNEEWW TTIIGGEERR !! Something unique and strange happened at Carswell last month. Alex Stacey, whose luck has been in short supply, as too has his skill factor, suddenly recaptured his form of olde, from the last millennium, when he was a mere youngster – 44 pts is no mean feat, and no blobs, unheard of ! It couldn’t have happened to a nicer fellow, especially when he joked the previous month at Henley, “Well, that 104 isn’t great, but a lot better than 115 at Wokefield ! Perhaps I’ll do another 11shots better next month – that would be something to shout about !” His 88 was 16 shots better. The question is, can he do it again at Badgemore – going round in 72 would be unbelievable ?

TTAABBLLEESS’’ SSUUMMMMAARRYY With Lee unable to play due to a “delicate” operation, Ian Brown has moved into first place in the LEAGUE TABLE on 84 pts, after his superb round at Carswell to finish runner-up, just the 4 ahead of Dave Miners and BEHOLD, MIRACLES DO HAPPEN . . . . . Siggy Mensah in 3rd spot – his highest ever league position ! The same 3 sit atop the ECLECTIC TABLE but with, wait for it . . . . Siggy in 2nd place. Lee still leads the MERIT TABLE . . . . can anyone catch him ? Matthew Brook had a disaster, recording just the one blob, slips to 3rd, with his charismatic friend, Michael Hayward, coming in straight at number one in the BLOBBY TABLE. Although Steve Woody couldn’t make Carswell, he remains in pole position in the BIRDIE

TABLE but, mind you, that pantomime character Siggy, is right up his arse . . . perhaps “behind him” is a better phrase.

Dave Evans – with yet another WFTTS award – now into double figures !

Michael Hayward – thrilled with his wooden

pin instead of a spoon

Martin Watson, following previous members’ efforts – praying for divine intervention at next month’s Nearest-the-Pin hole – missed out on a hole-in-one by just 1½“.

Mike Robins, guest of Siggy’s, joining in with the festivities. He will need a lot more pints of guiness if he is to improve next time out – just the 14 pts.

Ricky Cox displaying his cheesy smile after recording 36 pts and devouring the Carvery !

Matthew Brook – guessed correctly the number of total blobs to win the Captain’s Sweep.

OTHER NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

Pictured is  Richard  Davies  not  looking  his  best  after  yet  another  “disaster”  .  .  .  .  just  the  22pts. But he was nearest-the-pin at the par 3 6th hole – missed the putt though.. He  was  heard  muttering,  “Things  can  only  get  better”.  That’s  what  our  secretary  says  every  time  he tees off at the first !!!! Life can be hard. Martin Watson was also closest at the Nearest-the-Pin in 2 hole, just 8 ft away. FOUR members recorded holes in 2 : Ricky, Martin (couldn’t miss from 1 ½”), Alex & Dave Miners. The best Team Stableford Average was the highest ever, 36 – Jim, David Parsons, Ian and Mick Nichols. Barry Phillips won the Longest Drive with one of his huge boomer hits of 296 yds – longest so far this season.

CAPTAIN’S  CORNER  .  .  . ! ANDY’S  ANTICS  or  should  that  be  ANTIQUES  ! Welcome to Carswell, a fine open course with not too many hazards or hideous rough in which to lose your balls; did this mean a high score was likely? There was a good turnout of club members and guests and the weather remained kind having threatened heavy rain all week. So to the scoring; some made it look easy but for others the putting surfaces played havoc with their game. Congratulations go to Alex with magnificent score of forty-four just beating Ian by one. One putt Martin did not miss - just  the  1.5”  short  on  the  nearest  the  pin  hole. The only consolation for the winner of the WFTTS, Dave E, was that he was in the last group teeing off and therefore demonstrated his driving prowess to an audience of only three, + adjudicator Lee. Recently joined member Michael collected the wooden spoon; did Adrian look disappointed not  to  add  to  his  collection?  The  captain’s  sweep  was  claimed  by  Matthew  with  a  guess  of  49

blobs. Following the golf a splendid meal (and seconds for some) was enjoyed by all. It only remains for me to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope to see everyone at Badgemore (rain, more rain and floods permitting).

You get BIRDIE POINTS awarded for over 2 Stableford Points you score for each hole. ie. 3 stableford points scores 1 Birdie Point, 4 stableford pts score 2 Birdie pts, 5 scores 3 and so far since we have started this some years ago, NOBODY HAS EVER ACHIEVED 6 Stableford Points thus scoring 4 Birdie Pts at one hole. Obviously, only the HIGH handicappers can achieve this feat. ie. a hole in ONE at a hard par 3 where you have 2 shots OR an eagle at a par 4/5 where you also have two shots.

December 2013 JOKE PAGE 1

A woman went through a red traffic light and crashed into a man's car. Both of their cars are demolished but amazingly neither of them is hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said; "Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days." The man replied," I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God! The woman continued, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of wine didn't break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune." Then she hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it, drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks, "Aren't you having any?" She replies, "Nah. I think I'll just wait for the police." Adam ate the apple, too! Men will never learn! Four brothers left home for university, and they became successful doctors and lawyers. One evening, many years later, they chatted after having dinner together. They discussed the 95th birthday gifts they were able to give their elderly mother, who had moved to Florida. The first said, "You know, I had a big house built for Mama." The second said, " And I had a large theatre built in her house." The third said, "And I had my Mercedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her." The fourth said, "You know how Mama loved reading the Bible, and you know she can't read anymore because she can't see very well. I met a preacher who told me about a parrot who could recite the entire Bible. It took ten preachers almost 8 years to teach him. To get the bird, I had to pledge to contribute $50,000 a year for five years to the church, but it was worth it. Mama only has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it." The other brothers were impressed. After the celebration, Mama sent out her "Thank You" notes. She wrote: Milton, the house you built is so huge that I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house. Thanks anyway." "Marvin, I am too old to travel. I stay home; I have my groceries delivered, so I never use the Mercedes. But the thought was good. Thanks." "Michael, you gave me an expensive theatre with Dolby sound and it can hold 50 people, but all of my friends are dead, I've lost my hearing, and I'm nearly blind. I'll never use it. Thank you for the gesture, just the same." "Dearest Melvin, you were the only son to have the good sense to give a little thought to your gift. The chicken was delicious. Thank you so much." Love, Mama

ITALIAN SECRET for LONG MARRIAGE

At St. Peter's Catholic Church in Toronto , they have weekly husband's marriage seminars. At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who said he was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same Woman all these years. Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands, 'Wella, I'va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her, but besta of all is, I tooka her to Italy for the 25th anniversary!' The priest responded, 'Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary?' Giuseppe proudly replied, " I gonna go pick her up......"

Man/Woman Conversation Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about 3 Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip (This is where it gets scary !) Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: About 20 years, I suppose Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5400 ...correct? Man: Correct Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past20 years puts your spending at $108,000, correct? Man: Correct Woman: Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No Man: Where's your Ferrari?

A Beautiful CHRISTMAS Story. . . . . . . . . . . makes you understand that things happen for a reason The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October excited about their opportunities When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high. The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus.. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria. When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again. he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home, that was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job. What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving. The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike. He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between. The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.
