UPDATE FROM THE EXECUTIVE HEADTEACHER & HEAD OF SCHOOL

Mr P Duffy Mrs A Stahler

Bikeability

This week a number of our younger students have been involved in the Bikeability cycle training programme. Students have

been learning practical skills and gaining understanding of how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability is designed to give every-

one skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. We hope the weather yesterday didn’t put off too many of our budding cy-

clists.

Educational Visits

Our students have enjoyed a wealth of educational visits over the last week with:

Today’s Enigma Day, our annual ‘off curriculum’ Day which offers our students a different educational experience. A full

report is expected in next week’s newsletter.

Last weekend’s Paris and Duke of Edinburgh trips. We are pleased to report a good time was had by all, in spite of a

slight technical hitch with the Duke of Edinburgh minibus and traffic delays on the Paris trip.

The Big Bang Science trip which took place on Tuesday. It was a really inspirational event enjoyed by all, a full report can

be found later in this week’s newsletter.

Leavers’ Ball

Last Friday saw the Year 13 Leavers’ Ball, whilst the Year 11 Leavers’ Ball took place last night. We hope the students who

attended enjoyed this chance to celebrate the end of their exams. It was great to see the students ‘suited and booted’ and en-

joying themselves after all their hard work.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

On Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June, a number of students performed this years’ musical, 'The Little Shop of Horrors'. The performance showcased the excellent musical and dramatic skills of students from Deyes High. The performance was enjoyed by an audience of staff, students, parents, family and friends.

A shortened performed was delivered to Year 7 students on Thursday 7th July. This showed the students the level at which they can take their skills in performing arts. Comments from the audience

included:

“I thought it was a great version of the film/show.”

“I thought it was amazing, especially the way the characters were played with such enthusiasm.”

“The singing was great, with amazing dance moves.”

'“They couldn't have improved at all!”

“I want to take part next year!”

Auditions for next years 'Musical Medley' will take place on Friday 15th July.

FOOD FESTIVAL ROUNDS OFF HEALTH & WELLBEING WEEK

Last week’s Health and Wellbeing Week culminated in a Healthy Food Festival. This was organised by Miss Thompson and a group of Year 9 students from the Health and Wellbeing Committee. Molly Charnock, Emily Tipping, Rhiannon Davies and Mia Howard helped to plan an array of fun foodie activities ,which took place during Friday lunchtime, all designed to promote healthy eating. Students and staff watched a demonstration of how to make a Berry Blast milkshake and were given recipe cards. A ‘Guess the Sugar’ game amazed participants who were surprised to learn about the amount of ‘hidden’ sugar in everyday foods.

It would not be a Food Festival without some goodies to enjoy and we would like to give a huge thankyou to Morrisons in Maghull who kindly donated some free fruit to our festival, it went down a treat. Staff were encouraged to take part in a Bake Off, showcasing their cookery talents, but on the condition that their bakes had a healthy twist. All the entries (showcased below) were sold off and the proceeds donated to The Teenage Cancer Trust. Mrs Winn’s courgette, carrot and orange cake was delicious but the winner had to be the IT department’s joint entry. The IT department were the winners of a voucher, generously donated by Lakeland at Liverpool One. There was a real buzz around the food room and it was clear everyone who took part was excited about enjoying healthy foods.

SCIENCE TRIP GOES OFF WITH A BANG

On Tuesday 5th July, 38 Year 7 and 8 Deyes High School pupils attended the Big Bang North West event at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool. The event was sponsored by AstraZenaca with the aim to 'inspire young people from all backgrounds.' And inspire it did! It was hands on from the beginning, pupils spent several hours playing with robots, mixing chemicals, practicing first aid, beating world records and witnessing some amazing gastronomical science! Deyes even came 2nd in the UTC speed science competition! Students were treated to a variety of presentations ranging from science in every day life to careers in Science. Even though the students are only at the start of their time in secondary school, several pupils even decided upon their university route during the day, this will provide a great source of inspiration for their years at Deyes!

All in all the day was a great success, with several of the pupils expressing their wishes to return next year!

Quotes from students who attended the trip included:

“The best science trip ever!”

“I learnt so much and got so much from it.”

“It was a blast!”

Miss Fozard said, “As a teacher, it was the most rewarding experience, seeing pupils really engage with all things science, I can't wait to go again next year!”
